Dell XPS 2720 Keyboard, Mouse and Touchscreen Not Working

Q: Dell XPS 2720 Keyboard, Mouse and Touchscreen Not Working

Hi all,
I have a dell XPS2720 and so here is what happened.
I installed PS Now app in my PC and i wanted to get my wireless controller to work so I downloaded and installed SCP driver installer. I ran it but then the computer stopped responding so I decided to do a hard reset. I held the power button to restart then once the computer and windows started, i am unable to do anything anymore since I am stuck in the home screen. This is the screen wherein when you press any key or click the mouse, the system prompts you to log in your password to unlock the screen.
My mouse, keyboard and touchscreen are all not responsive. To isolate the issue, i tried my unifying receiver on another PC and it is working. I am thinking my drivers perhaps got messed up.
Can you help me? What can i do given that i can't even log back in to the system.

Preferred Solution: Dell XPS 2720 Keyboard, Mouse and Touchscreen Not Working

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just recently purchased a XPS 27- 2720. It comes with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard (KM714), however I am unable to get them to work. Is the XPS 27 suppose to detect the mouse and keyboard via internal bluetooth sensor or is there suppose to be a USB dongle that comes with the mouse+keyboard combo? If it is the latter, my system did not come with a USB dongle to plug in and I am missing a part. If it is the former and it's suppose to connect via internal bluetooth sensor, then I am at a lost at what is wrong. All devices are switched on w/batteries installed. :(
Any help is much appreciated.

UPDATE: I was able to get the mouse and keyboard to work. Reinstalled logitech unifying receiver drivers. Removed the mouse and keyboard from the paired devices list. Restarted the pairing process, and now its working.

A:XPS 27- 2720, Mouse and Keyboard not working

Check to see if the dongle is under the screen on the lower right side. You have to tilt the monitor all the way back so you can see the lower right edge. There is a small silver snap in cover use your finger nail under the right side and pop it out. Remove the dongle then reinsert it and try the keyboard and mouse. If it still doesn't work try pulling it out and use another USB port. If it works then unplug and put it back in the slot under the screen and try again.

I am having a problem with the USB keyboard and mouse. Simply they are not responding. However, I do not have PS/2 connectors. The desktop is frozen. I am willing to reformat the hard drive but I do not know how. Any feedback is welcome.

I've read it might have something to do with the lithium-ion battery, is this true? I have removed it, waited for 24hrs but still did not reset. Please help !!!

I have a Dell E5500 running Windows 7 and the keyboard and mouse stopped working.  For the keyboard I get  "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".  For the mouse I get  "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
I have tried deleting/re-installing devices and drivers, ran AVG & Malwarebytes programs, disk check, verified and updated bios, deleted all windows updates since problem, verified all programs are enabled in MSCONFIG.
I do have this machine running both Windows XP and 7 as a dual boot.  WIndows XP works just fine.  I cannot get the devices to work in safe mode.  I believe that there is a registry issue but of coarse I have no backup.
Any help would be appreciated before I have to reload the machine.

I purchase this Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series 15.6 Inch Laptop last December and it was great to allow me to interchange the use of touch screen and keyboard with mouse. Suddenly a couple weeks ago, the keyboard and mouse were not recognized by the system when I turned on the laptop. I got the touch screen working but I need to use keyboard and mouse most. Any advice on how to fix it?
Many thanks! Jade.

Yesterday, after restarting my PC to finish updates from Windows, and installations from Autodesk and MATLab, my keyboard, touch pad and wireless mouse stopped working. After checking the drivers, I found that the keyboard and mouse drivers had a code 32. So I did a system restore before all the updates. Did nothing for the drivers.I tried uninstalling, updating the drivers; didn't work. Then I used CCleaner to clean up registry errors. No changes.Next, I went into the registry and deleted the UpperFilter values for the keyboard and mouse drivers. Code 32 was gone for HID keyboard driver and the HID mouse driver. But now the ps/2 keyboard driver and the synaptics smbus driver now had a code 10.After removing and reconnecting my wireless mouse's usb, I noticed that fixed drivers come and go with it, so I tried to find the drivers for the mouse to try a manual reinstall for my mouse. Couldn't find them, (Logitech's website was of no help). So I got Driver Booster to help me. The program said my PC had a lot of outdated drivers, so I decided to let the program update them all in hopes it would fix both the code 10 and let my mouse work again. And that's how the touchscreen stopped responding. Driver Booster had paused while downloading the driver for the Bluetooth as Windows Defenders stopped it. When I tried to allow the download, I notice my only method of interacting with my PC had failed.I force shut down the PC in hopes that the problem would be fixed. Didn't work.So now, I can... UPDATE:Okay, I found that there was a way to force the PC into recovery mode without any buttons.I took out the battery, forced a shut down, and unplugged the power cord when I turned it on. After replugging the power and powering up, it went into recovery.Touchscreen and keyboard worked in recovery mode, was too excited to test TouchPad and mice.Anyways, I'm resetting the PC now. Hopefully this fixes it all.I'm somewhat leary of doing updates, however. Reading around online, some had this issue for their keyboards and mice due to Windows 10 hybrid shutdown and fast startup. I'm going to try to turn that off, update everything, and hope that fixes everything. Will update status later.Hope anyone having similar issues find this useful.

Please help me. I am going crazy with the on screen keyboard.  I have a Twist S230u Laptop (Thinkpad) The keyboard that appears IS NOT the on screen keyboard that you can bring up from settings. It is the keyboard that is only supposed to appear when you use the touch screen and point into a text field.  I am using regular keyboard exclusively. As I type this, I don't see the keyboard that takes up half of the bottom of the page, but if I stop typing and point and click my mouse to a different area of the text box, it appears. I then have to close it and begin again. This is every time. As you can imagine, this slows me way down in my work.  I have searched the forums and I have searched other sites and I can't find anything on this. Please tell me how to make the touchscreen keyboard go away.

Main issue im having is the keyboard is acting very bizzare. First keypress does not register when I start typing or after pressing the spacebar. shift keys and backspace are intermittent. for example, on this sentence i had to press the "f" key twice as well as press every letter twice after each press of the spacebar. Reinstalled drivers, system restore, malware scans all to no avail. i'd guess it's a hardware issue.now the touchscreen:does not work 99% of the time but randomly appears to. When it's not working windows tells me no touch is available for this display. Seems like a poor connection to me as well as I can't seem to find touch screen drivers. anyone have experience with this?

Two issues I have found with the XPS 13 2 in 1 laptop I recently got:
1.- The most upsetting, that after the "Urgent" BIOS update suggested by Dell, the touchscreen completely stopped working, so my 2 in 1 is now a "1 in 1".
2.- The delay in the Touchpad and mouse response (even when the setting is at the 'no delay' option) is too long, up to 2 seconds.
Specs below. PLEASE! somebody help me!

Have you made any changes to the basic system install?
Is the touch screen device showing up in the Device Manager with the Human Interface Devices?  Are there any Unknown devices showing anywhere in Device manager?

The following are needed before you can transfer the warranty:
1.  You must have upgraded (or upgrade now) the warranty to onsite service -- the basic 12 month return to depot warranty is not transferable internationally.
2.  The model must be sold in the market where you want to transfer the warranty.
Start by contacting Dell in India -- you will likely need to purchase a warranty upgrade first.  Then see here:

I have just installed a clean UEFI Windows 10 on my almost brand-new XPS 13 the touchscreen does not seem to work at all.
I have gone to the support website to auto-detect and download drivers. Went through Dell's diagnostic tool for touch screen, which said it could not detect any touchscreen device. There are no unknown/driverless devices in my Device Manager.
After scouring through many forum posts, I am baffled. Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

A:Dell XPS 13 9350: Touchscreen not Working on Windows 10

This model is available both with and without touchscreen - check the specifications at support.dell.com to verify your unit does have the touch option.
If it does, and you don't see it upon clean install of WIndows 10, call Dell - the touchscreen is faulty.

I've had this computer for nearly 3 years now and it has served as a somewhat problem free laptop minus some problems with the ram and charger. This problem started after I got my laptop back from dell support after they replaced all the internal hardware, about 3 months ago.. They gave me a clean OS install, but installed windows 8 on it, because that was the original software that came with it. After arguing on the phone for about 2 hours with a stubborn technician, he finally agreed to install windows 10 for me. After going through some shady websites, he downloaded it onto a USB and everything installed. I later realised that the copy of windows was not genuine even though I had paid for everything. Pointing it out to the technician, He told me the certificate would activate later. It never happened and I ended up paying again for a product key.
A little while later, the synaptics touchpad driver kept crashing after reboots, and I realised that I would have to reboot my computer twice. This has been going on for about 3 months now. Then, two days ago, all of a sudden, my touchpad AND touchscreen stopped working. Nothing seems to fix it, even a full reboot (sometimes). Once it starts working for no apparent reason, it stops working again at random times. Times working range from 20 seconds to 5 minutes. I have the power switch set to hibernate and hibernating and waking it up seems to sometimes get the touchpad and touchscreen working, but it suddenly stops working lat... Read more

Hello Gurus, May I have your time to help on this case? My thinkpad model is X1 Carbon 3rd generation 20BS, which has run smoothly for years with customized touchscreen hardware. From last week, I suddenly noticed that "touchscreen" is not in operation and "wired USB mouse" can't be recognized by Win10. When checking their status in Device Manager, it shows their drivers aren't in installed. The detailed screenshot from Device Manager is as the bottom. I have tried following ways to solve-out, but doesn't work:1, Remove the unknown devices from Device Managers, then restart to make the OS to reinstall the drivers again, but touchscreen and USB mouse still don't work;2, Try to find touchscreen driver from Lenovo support portal, but there is no particular link to download for updating the driver;3, Remove "Mice and other pointing devices" from Device Manager for installation, but seems nothing to do with "touchscreen" and "USB mouse", still not work. All above ways can't help my problem out. Would you please suggest that? Thank you in advance. Leo.Touchscreen driver missed in win10

First run Antivirus, Malware, and Spyware scans. Remove anything the programs find.

Note: if you need some suggestions on which tools to use, let me know.

Afterwards, test functionally of mouse and keyboard.

If no change, run System Restore, choose a Restore point before the issue started.

Again test behavior of mouse and keyboard.

If the issue has been resolved, go ahead and reinstall windows Updates.

Hey, I have a Inspiron 15 3521 running windows 8.1 and touch screen just stopped working.  I tried updating drivers and downgrading drivers but no luck.  Tried Windows 10 but no change.  Tried adjusting power mgmt. settings and no change.  It seems like it is not detecting the touch screen and HID is hidden so no option it enable or disable.  Diagnostic does not see the device so does not attempt to run. There are tons of posts on this issue but I can't find any resolution.  Can anyone provide a fix?  A touch screen generally shouldn't just stop working and with all the issues I am thinking it is some sort of Dell or hardware issue?

I have been having issues with my touchscreen. It was working just fine and then it wasn't. I have done everything I could possibly think of including
-restart the computer
- run troubleshoot on the laptop and through dell.com
- reset the computer with files
-reset the computer without files
-checked the BIOS
- reinstall/uninstall the touchscreen driver ( it does not automatically reinstall btw)
-update the driver: it was found that all drivers are up to date on my laptop

Under device manager, the HID compliant touchscreen is greyed out and there is an error code that says "
Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."
I have contacted dell technical support via phone and could not help me. I am a student who goes out of the United states for school. So now I am unsure of what to do. Has anyone had this problem and was successfully able to fix it? Also I am running windows 10, but it came with the laptop.

Hello DELL Community!
I have a question concerning the all new Haswell XPS 27 AIO PC. There is the option (like the old 2710 model) to configure the XPS with a 32GB cache mSATA SSD drive and a 2TB HDD for storage.
Is it possible to upgrade the mSATA SSD to a e.g 256GB mSATA and use it as a boot drive/system drive for Windows?? So can i turn off the RST in Bios (from RAID to AHCI) and freshly install Windows? I would not care of the preinstalled software, i just want a much more quicker PC. I mean there are 450GB mSATA SSD on the market and it would be really a shame, if this interface is only for caching?? Who needs that in a time where SSD's get cheaper.

Thank you very much in advance

I bought a used 2720 that the previous user reformatted using the Recovery Disk before sending it to me. It has a Samsung 32GB mSATA solidstate drive that is integral to a 2TB 7200 HDD. The HDD is Drive 0 Partition 1. The mSATA drive (Drive 1) is divided into four (4) partitions.
The problem is he installed Windows 8 Pro OS on the 32 GB drive, along with a 300MB recovery partition and a 99MB EFI partition. Consequently there is no space left to update the OS or add programs in their conventional default location (C://...).
I used the Recovery Disk to format Drive 0 Partition 1, which is the 1863GB HDD. I also formatted the 32GB mSATA Drive 1 Partitions 1,2, and 4 (would not let me format D1P3 as it's type was MSR (Reserved). Now, i find that I cannot install Windows 8 to D0P1 as it tells me that this drive has an MBR partition table and that on EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
Can someone help me understand how to install the OS on the D0P1 drive. I would also like help to reformat the mSATA drive to a single partition and designate it as the swap drive.

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

My son was playing a game on our Dell XPS 2720 when all of a sudden the computer just died.  Now when we press the power button, the power button does not light up and it sounds like the only thing that turns on is the fan for the power supply.  There is a small green light at the back of the computer underneath where the power cord is plugged in that is lit.  Otherwise, there is no other indication of life.  I have tried unplugging the machine and holding down the power button for 15 seconds, but that does nothing.
Anyone have any suggestions of what to try next?

I have a Dell XPS One 2720 (Purchased April 2014) and it suddenly shut down while I was using the computer.  Now there is no power to the unit. The fans do not turn on and the power button light does not turn either. The LED on the back of the monitor just below the power cord is blinking.
I have tried:

New power cord (known good working cord)
Different power outlet
Made sure the power cord was seated correctly
Removed RAM and HDD and did not get any beeps (no sound at all)

Could this just be a simple power supply issue? How could I test if the power supply is working correctly? Would a bad power cause these symptoms? How could I test the power button?

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

I have brought it home to fix for someone, and just discovered none of my USB devices work with it.

It has no PS2 sockets for the usual keyboards and mice

Just wondered if there was a workaround ?

Check your bios settings to see if usb support is enabled. What is the reason you are working on this?

Have a dell computer that asking me to hint F1 or F2, however, the use keyboard is not recognize in dos mode. I readed a lot of forums, it seems like I might have to buy a new motherboard. For a month I been trying everything; nothing is working for me. However. I can across this site, and found this part " Syba PCI 32-bit High Speed USB 2.0 2x Ports and 2x PS2 Port Combo Card ". I would like to know if this part would help me out?

Do you have PS/2 ports on your computer already? If so, all you may need is a very inexpensive PS/2 keyboard. I'd go to some mom/pop store and get the cheapest one available (or just borrow one). Be aware that some boards do not enable the PCI bus until after the system boots past the CMOS setup.

When you are able to get into the BIOS, enable legacy USB support.

I've read this is a common problem, but nothing has lead me to a conclusion. I'm working on a computer (Dell E310 with WMCE 2005) and my USB mouse and keyboard will not work (no PS2 ports ). I have made sure the USB ports are turned on in BIOS and have tried multiple mice and keyboards. The customer reports that theirs had worked fine, but mine will not. The weird thing is...they will work fine if I load a BootCD and run off of that. I have tried Safe Mode (every one), Debugging Mode, Last Good Config., everything I could think of and nothing works. I can't get to the Device Manager to even uninstall the USB devices in case they are corrupt. I am desperately in need of help here, thanks!!
