Windows remembering passwords

Q: Windows remembering passwords

Having Windows remember your passwords for logging on to certain sites is very convenient. My husband clicked "no" when prompted to have Windows remember his eBay password. Now he wishes he had clicked "yes." Is there a way to reactivate this? TKS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The first time these pop up I usually type in a username and password that work and hit remember my username and password. Now I want to use a different username and password for that computerName. How can I do this?

I'm really looking for a quick extension that I can add into the Run box.

I tried some crazy ideas like \\userName[email protected]

That didn't work... hehe

Also look for ALL of the Cookies for that site, and delete them, as the setting may be saved within a cookie.

Good Day All -

I recently upgraded to IE 9, however due to compatibility with some web programs for work I had to roll back to IE 8. I also encountered a profile issue and I lost all my saved username and passwords in IE. My IE 8 is now not asking to save usernames and passwords and it had in the past. I have searched the internet and everyone says make sure it is set up to remember username and passwords... by going to Internet Options > Content > AutoComplete> Settings. I have all the boxed checked. I have triple checked it. I looked in the IntelliForms in the registry as another website suggested and nothing is there.

Please help!

In Internet Explorer, I am having a problem. My first step was to contact Microsoft, but they said I would have to talk to you as it was an OEM version. In IE, the box for a username and password pops up. I fill in the info, and check the box to remember it. However, the next time I go back, the fields are blank. This happens every time, for all sites. I have tried everything I can think of, including reseting all default settings, etc. Thank you.

A:IE NOT remembering passwords

So Microsoft gave you the address of this site to get help? Is that true?

Anyway, are you talking about IE not remembering the userid and password when you first connect to the net via your dialup connection or are you talking about userids and passwords when you go to certain webpages?

If your talking about it not remembering the userid and password when you first connect to the net via your dialup connection then do this,

Start>Find>Files, key in *.pwl and press enter. You should see one that has the username for your PC. Right click on it and select Rename. Now rename it .old, for example, bhesson.pwl would be renamed to bhesson.old

Now click on Start>Shutdown>Restart. When the Windows logon box appear at startup leave the password box blank and click on OK. It's important that you click on OK and not on Cancel.

Now see if IE remembers the userid and password. You may need to key it in the first time but after that subsequent conections should remember it.

If your talking about userids and passwords when you go to certain webpages then do this, Start>Settings>CP>InternetOptions>Content>AutoComplete. Make sure userids and passwords are selected.

Click the drop-down arrow next to Options (left side of page) and choose either Find member's posts or Find Member's Topics. Scroll through the list until you find what you are looking for.In your case, you won't have a lot of pages to look through. If you have several pages of posts or topics, and don't want to wade through the them all click on Search at the top right of the BC page. This is useful if you don't know the date range of when you posted, but you do remember a few keywords from the post. Click on More Search Options. When the search page opens, type in a keyword from the post you made, then enter your name in Filter by Member Name (optional). Scroll down and click Perform the search.Example: I went to Search options, typed in the keyword passwords, then your name. The search brought up your post here and your previous post.

My guess is it is either spy sweeper or ncleaner that is deleting the cookies. If you have ncleaner in startup, I would suggest removing it from startup, reboot and see if that is the culprit. If not, do the same for Spy Sweeper.

I used to have a triple-monitor setup, but one of the monitors died. Since I removed the other monitor, Windows has had trouble remembering the "Always On Top" status for: 1) The Taskbar 2) Gadgets and 3) Winamp.

I've restarted a number of times since I removed the monitor but still the problem persists. Windows will remember to keep an element on top for a little while, but eventually forgets until I manually click on the object to bring it back on top, where it remains until Windows next forgets. The taskbar no longer has a tickbox option for "Always on top". Winamp is set to be "Always On Top".

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this problem? Thanks!

Installed an EnGenius USB wireless adapter which set up without a hitch. Went through the process of connecting to the internet. Was able to get online and surf-- no problems.

The problem is that Windows 7 will not retain the wireless settings, and EVERY SINGLE TIME that I boot up the machine I have to go through the WHOLE PROCESS of opening Network Sharing Center, searching for my wireless home network, typing in the security code, and establishing the connection ONCE AGAIN. Why won't Windows 7 remember the wireless settings??? This is most frustrating! IF I open the "Manage Wireless Networks" panel there are NO NETWORKS listed! I have run Windows update.

Can anyone provide me with a a clus as to what is going on here? Thanks for any and all assistance!

Hi technomann,

Try going in to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Manage Wireless Networks. If the desired internet connection is already listed, right click and go to Properties. If not, add your connection manually. In Properties, there should be a check box with an option to have Windows 7 automatically connect to this network. Make sure that box is checked and let us know if this fixes the problem.

Issue occurs both over VGA and DVI connections. I've removed/re-installed the latest drivers for the onboard video card from Dell's website, to no avail.

I have a micro-usb cable for charging my mouse that the cats chewed through. It was doing the device connect/disconnect sound over and over with an annoying popup. Oddly enough, the cable still works but now it shows as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager under "Other devices".
The way I did my cable management in the back of my desktop is I ran everything through a tube, so even though I have a replacement for that micro-usb, in order to remove it and replace it with the working one I'd have to spend so much time and effort. What's funny is the reason I did all of this cable management was because of the cats, I had all of my usb cords going through a separate piece of cardboard to where they plug in but they still managed to find an exposed area to chew.
So my ghetto solution was I replaced the connect/disconnect .wav with a .wav with no audio. The pop up is what is still giving me trouble though, every time it pops up it forgets that I set it to "Hide icon and notifications"

"USB Device not recognized: The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it" - How do I get this message to permanently shut up.

If it is no longer plugged into a USB port and you are still getting that notification, you may be able to get rid of it by going into device manager and deleting the hidden profile. So, to view profiles that are not active, you must select View then select Hidden profiles. Once done, you will see many devices displayed that are greyed-out which indicates they are not active. Find the one you think may be causing the issue and delete it. No guarantees but this was the first thing that came to my mind. Good luck.

Hi.

First of all let me apologize for repeating the scaling issue. I have searched high and low and tried just about anything i could find, but Windows is still misbehaving.

First let me explain my issues. There are 2 specific ones that annoy me.

Issue 1.
I have an HP Elitebook 8570w laptop that I use for work. At home I use the laptop as it is but at the office I have a docking station with a second display connected to it.

My issues are when i connect it to the docking station.

My PC has a native resolution of 1920x1080 and my second screen is 24" and 1920x1200.
When i insert the laptop in the docking it scales the laptop screen and it becomes blurry while the larger screen is clear.

The settings that so far works best for me is to have "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays" turned OFF and set to smaller, but every time i insert it in the docking station I have to go in to these settings and change from smaller to another setting on the slider, click apply and then change back to smaller. This removed the blurryness and scaling seems normal without having to sign out and back in.

Pictures:
This is my settings for the scaling.

The result after booting up in the docking station: (full screen snipp showing one half clear and the other blurry)

Changing this setting once and back fixes it:

My question about this is why does it do this? From what I understand of the settings here is that I have set it to smaller and (after changing ... Read more

Using Eventghost I have setup a command to open a Video folder on monitor 2 (HDMI connected Sony Bravia)
I also have installed and use Display Fushion to manage my monitors.
My problem is that Windows Explorer seems to want to remember its last opened location so that I now find even if I open any other folder on my PC it displays straight to my TV screen (Monitor 2).
Only after dragging the opened folder back to my PC monitor and then closing it all other folders open as normal on my PC but also the programmed Eventghost macro video folder. This fails to open on TV unless dragged back to TV and then I?m back to the problem again of all folders opening on TV.
I basically just want Eventghost to do its thing without Windows then remembering and making all future folders opening on Monitor 2 (TV).
Hope I?ve explained this clearly enough.

Installed free software called MultiMonitor, this gives the option of creating a command line to switch connected monitor off and on.

When in the off state folders open normally on PC, switch monitor back on and the folder dedicated to open on connected monitor still does.

When I open windows explorer menu it opens at a smaller window size then I'd like it to, so I resize it and close it but the next time that I open it from right clicking on the start menu and choosing explore, it opens at the same position and small size and isn't holding the window resizing that I did... What I've tried so far to make the window size "stick":

1. Use the Windows Explorer "ALT" key to bring up the File menu at the top of the explorer and choose "close" after resizing my Explorer window.

2. Made sure that the "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked. I've also unchecked it, chose apply, then recheck marked it and chose apply just in case it needed refreshing.

3. Used the "X" button at the top right of the window to close it after resizing it to the size that I want. And finally

4. Chose the upper left corner menu (the one with Restore, Minimize, Move, Close in it) and chosen Close.

None of which has worked to save the windows explorer sized window, it always opens in the same exact position and the same exact size (which I want to make larger when it initially opens as it's way too small for me)

I've heard that resizing the window and using the "X" button to close it will not save the size and that you have to use the ALT menu to choose File > Close to save the size and position however that's not working for me.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

A:Remembering windows size & documents names with different colors!

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = dynhost.inetcam.com;register.inetcam.com;
look omnious. Do you have any knowledge on this site?

This is the only one I can see that needs to be removed:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B9D6B3C2-09AD-464A-8162-8C55114C808A} - (no file)

Have you tried Sybot S&D, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and CWShredder?

Also it could just be a driver problem. Try updating the graphics card drivers.

Hi i did label my last thread as fixed.. Well everything was fixed until i rebooted this morning to find that windows still does not remember the startup options selected. I am going to use msconfig.exe --> seletive startup to see if any difference is made. Windows for some reason doesnt like to remeber anything after a restart, it forgets bookmarks i've added before the restart, rocketdock programs that have been newely added, it forgets all state of memory after a restart..

I will keep looking for a fix but please does anyone know of registry edits which cause a system to forget its last state before a restart/shutdown.. I got the start context menu's back for some reason they were disabled along with the taskmanager/run command and shutdown buttons.. So i know something has tweaked the registry so that it forgets its last state before shutdown..

Please help me find the tweak.

Dan

Hell everyone, my computer (ever since I can remember) has been a bit stubborn in remembering the size I give to certain windows and, on occasion, the type of views I give inside folders and so on (big icons, lists, details, etc.) I was wondering if this was a general problem with Vista or if my system is somehow compromised? Oh, and also on program windows like IE and Windows Media Player...

Also, I can't, for the life of me, seemingly keep the Windows Update settings to "Automatic". Every now and then the system has a pop-up notifications telling me to check my Windows Update settings and I do, then I change it back to automatic but it goes back to disabled after a few days. The strange thing about this is how it only began about two weeks ago, this Windows Firewall problem, the other window sizes and views has always been present in my system.

My Mozilla Firefox Password manager now has no saved passwords in it. I don't recall doing anything that caused it but do I have any hope of recovering? I've tried "un-hiding files" in Control panel but no help. Any suggestions . . . Please!

hi i have a strange problem with my windows mails that is when i create a mail it is not picking the email address automatically though the the option is set to pick up automatically in options

A:Windows Mail not remembering mail addresses

Hi anilthap.

Welcome to the forums.

WM will remember the last 29 addys you have sent mail to. It will also search in you Contacts folder for addys, but it won't do that until you tab or click out of the 'To' box.

One thing that can break WM finding addys in the Contacts folder is improperly moving the folder from Users/username. If you have not done this, then you might try Problem 2 here: Windows Mail problems

Hope this helps. Please keep us posted.

Using XP Pro - when loaded no password was entered. For the past week every time I log on I receive message " Your password will expire in XX Days" (down to 6 days today) "Do you want to change it now?" If I respond yes system asks for old password. I do not have an old password. I am afraid system is going to lock me out in 6 days. Also system is taking up to 10 minutes to load when turned on. For the past several days I have been receiveing a new message at log in - "system could not log you on user name and domain do not match" If I hit continue system boots up. Here is what I have tried thus far -
- checked out all passwords on control panel - no passwords set for myself as administrator.
- start -run- control passwords2- got into user password screens - turned off requirement for passwords for all users.
- re-loaded XP
- restored XP to a previous date before messages started
- ran McAfee Virus scan - found one infected file - deleted it.
I am at a loss - Can anyone provide insight as to how I can determine what the system thinks is my password???

I wonder where does Windows (namely Windows 7) keeps a user password? The password that we enter when Windows starts. And how does it keep them? Are they encrypted? What is encryption algorithm?

Please share links to articles, videos where these questions are explained. Thank you in advance.

A:Where does Windows keeps passwords?

Hello Ayubjon and welcome to the forums

Where do I begin!

Windows passwords aren't encrypted, but they are hashed. The hashing algorithm is LM and NTLM. The passwords are stored in the SAM file:

%WinDir%\system32\config\SAM

This is actually a registry hive and can only be accessed by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

As an administrator, you can change the permissions of this registry hive and load it under HKLM, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you want to see your SAM file, there are much easier methods to do this.

I would like to set up individual accounts on my computer. I am using Windows XP and my brother is on way to much so my mom asked me if there was anything to do about it other than just get rid of the computer. Is there anyway you can set up individual accounts and have a time limit on them so it boots you off after it reaches a certain amount of time for the day or for the week? I am not real familiar with setting up the user accounts so if anyone knows of a basic online guide to set them up could you please post a link. Thanks for the help.

what is the point of user passwords on windows when the passwords can be removed in under 30 seconds? just curious

A:Passwords on Windows

Whats the point of locking the door or the luggage or the....?

Passwords are one layer in a multilayered approach to security. Windows passwords can be coupled with data encryption with Bitlocker or Truecrypt for even stronger protection. However, if a thief has prolonged physical access to the system, pretty much all bets are off.

Unless somebody steals your system and so has all the time in the world to get in unauthorizedly, a strong password will be able to deter the casual thief. More accomplished thieves can be deterred by having bios passwords, changing the password regularly, keeping a password which is a combo of characters and numerals and encrypting sensitive data.

But again physical security of the system is most important.
