Lenovo X1 Carbon 5th Gen, Lenovo Explorer and Windows Mixed Reality

Q: Lenovo X1 Carbon 5th Gen, Lenovo Explorer and Windows Mixed Reality

Hi,I have a brand new Carbon X1 5th Gen and just bought the Explorer VR headset. I run Windows 10 with everything updated. I cant get my VR headset to work, as it is complaining about an unsupported driver from Intel. When trying to update it to the one supporting Mixed Reality, its fails during the installation, and refers to Lenovo. Where can I find the supported Intel driver for my X1 Carbon so I can my Lenovo Explorer to work. Its really sad that two products from the same company doesnt seamlessly connect/update so things work.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My Samsung Odyssey WMR headset will not wake up. I'm on a Dell Precision 7720 on Windows 10 with Quadro P5000 and it has worked great up until tonight It is set up in special graphics mode routing the P5000 to my external ports. It connects and the Windows MR portal thinks all is well, but the Odyssey screen is black and the green light blinks, indicating sleep. The wireframe setup screen and the Cliff House shows on my laptop screen where it should be on my headset.

I bought myself a lenovo explorer windows mixed reality device and it has stopped working. I'm not sure if this is due to the device or the USB hardware in my computer.

Plugged directly into a USB 3.0 port on my PC that port will fail.

Plugged into a powered USB 3.0 hub it will start up but then claim to be plugged into a USB 2 port. Looking at it on usbtreeview the headset does indeed appear on a "Generic USB 2.1 Hub" despite having been plugged into a "Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub".

I have tried disabling and re-enabling drivers, re-starting and even got a PCIe USB 3 card, but that has failed to properly install.

Attached screenshot has system specs and the problems I'm seeing circled in device manager and USB tree viewer.

What would you suggest as my next step?

A:Windows Mixed Reality and USB drivers

So the new device did work at first ? Is it specified as a Usb 3 only device ? Do the Usb ports it doesn't work in work ok with other Usb 2 and 3 devices ?

Mixed reality will unleash the creativity of every person and every organization on the planet. Our journey has been filled with key moments in time that have shown us what is possible as we enter this next era of computing, the era of mixed reality. From the introduction of Microsoft HoloLens, the world?s first fully self-contained holographic computer in January 2015, to the welcoming of enterprise partners like Ford Motor Company, the inspiration and creativity we have seen customers and modern workplaces continues to inspire us and drive us forward.

We unveiled a Windows Mixed Reality headset from Samsung, the Samsung HMD Odyssey, which joins the family of Windows Mixed Reality headsets. I talked about the work we are doing with SteamVR and announced that AltspaceVR is joining our Microsoft team. Finally, we kicked off the holiday buying season by celebrating the availability of pre-orders for Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Hello Windows Insiders!

We?re excited to offer our Fast ring insiders a sneak peek at the latest features coming this spring to Windows Mixed Reality! Our favorite new updates in Insider Preview Build 17115 include:
A brand-new environment. In October we mentioned that the Cliff House was the first of many environments you?ll be able to enjoy in Windows Mixed Reality, and now we?re rolling out the Skyloft for you to customize and expand your MR experience. You can navigate there by selecting Places on the Mixed Reality Start menu.
As requested, we?ve added haptic feedback to the motion controllers for SteamVR games!
We?ve improved performance in SteamVR games with significantly lower video RAM usage. We?ve also improved the performance of live video preview in the Mixed Reality Portal on desktop.
You can now take mixed reality photos directly from your controller by holding the Windows button and then tapping the trigger. This works across environments and apps except for capturing content protected with DRM.
The automatic performance settings have been updated to provide an optimized experience, and we?ve added a new setting to override the default in Settings > Mixed Reality > Headset display.
Setup now provides more detailed information about common compatibility issues with USB3.0 controllers and graphics cards.
Many more improvements that the team has been hard at work on!

Last year around this time I had the chance to write a post about one of my favorite mixed reality uses cases ? healthcare.
Since that time, we have continued to see remarkable momentum for mixed reality across numerous facets of the industry. This week at HIMSS our team had the privilege to once again be on the ground to see and experience how customers and partners are embracing mixed reality to transform the way they innovate, support, and help others.

Coming out of the show I wanted to take a moment to spotlight some of the innovation work we are seeing from organizations who are working to forge the future of healthcare.

CAE Healthcare
Joining us onsite at HIMSS this year was CAE Healthcare. CAE is an industry leader in the development of simulation-based technologies, curriculum, and resources that improve clinical performance. I talked about some of their earliest work with Microsoft HoloLens last year ? well, they certainly haven?t slowed down!

Freed from the limits of a two-dimensional environment inside a monitor, healthcare professionals can display, enlarge, turn, and rotate realistic-looking anatomical parts, or command them to return into the manikin body. Users and those learning with this technology are able to witness (in real time) the ultrasound beam as it cuts through human anatomy.

If you try to install a different driver, it fails with code 1. No matter if you uninstall, reinstall, different versions of the driver....nothing seems to restore the audio. It seems to be a software problem but I would really like to know if there is some way to get it working without having to restore every time someone runs lenovo system update.

Hi. I bought a Yoga 920 yesterday and got a free mixed reality headset with it, the Dell Visor VR118. It says it's ready to go out of the box so I plugged it in, everything was recognised and it went through the setup process. Once it's all set up I put on the headset and there's nothing happening. On the screen it says that everything is working but the headset is just blank! Anyone successfully set it up on a Yoga 920 yet? The headset only has HDMI so I'm using a USB-C adapter to HDMI which may be causing the issue?

Hello,    I am looking to replace my aging Lenovo T420S and Lenovo x1 Carbon 1st generation. They have both served me well and I am happy with both.  I like the touch of Carbon but don?t use it that often. The machine will be perosnla machine but will be used for personal and business/work use. I saw the T460S and x1 Yoga yesterday at our IT department. I like the built quality of Lenovo T460S including keyboard but found X1 Yoga to be fragile. I couldn?t get my hands on X1 Carbon 4th generation and found out that it doesn?t have touch anymore. The weight difference is minimal between the three machines and I personally like the weight, feel and ruggedness of Lenovo T460S. Bottom line is does anyone have experience with these three machines? I can afford to replace only one machine now and it will be fully loaded (i7, 16GB and 1Tb PCIe-NVME drive). Is x1 Yoga rugged and reliable? The difference between X1 Carbon 4th Gen and T460S seems minimal. Thank You!Subhash

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

troubles started only after the upgrade to Windows 10 and I frankly tried to ignore the 1-2 BSOD's per day as I'm working 10h+ and still with deadlines in tow.
Lately the BSOD's hit more often and from different reasons: Kernel Security Check Failure, IRQL not less or equal, Memory Management...
I already ran all kinds of hardware tests, everything seems to be fine.
Please note that the SysnativeFileCollection is a .rar inside a .zip as the file was too big.

PLEASE help,

Hi, I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon running Windows 10. I would like to connect an external monitor and my only option seems to be using the HDMI port and using a HDMI to VGA cable. I plug this into a Philips 24" ext monitor and nothing I try can get me to
duplicate or extend my display. I just get a message on the ext monitor of "Check Cable Connection". New cable, and new laptop.
How can I even check, if the HDMI port is enabled or is there some other hidden switch / setting / feature I need to turn on first. I have tried the display settings and 'Detect' but nothing.
Any thoughts please.

Since Lenovo updated their Lenovo Vantage app for Windows 10 about a moth ago, something (i suppose in the app) is causing the WMI Provider Host to take 10-30% of the CPU. If I uninstall the Lenovo Vantage app and restart the PC, the process magically doesn't show up anymore. I tryed reinstalling the app and everything works well untill I restart the PC. Once I restart the PC with the app installed the WMI Provider Host process starts again consuming abnormously the CPU. I even tried letting it run to see if eventually it would stop eating up the CPU, but it just goes on and on (I tried letting the PC run several hours, but it never stopped). Any hints Lenovo? Is it only me or is the app broken?

The Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 6 is an excellent solution for Dual Boot with Red Hat 7 and Windows 10 If you're requirement is dual boot with Red Hat Linux 7 (which is certified as compatible on the X1 Carbon Gen6) and Windows 10, this computer will be perfect for you. To configure, use the Windows 10 Computer Management / Disk Manager and shrink the C: partiton so it has free space for the new Red Hat 7 / CentOS 7 operating system which you will load.  Once space is freed up, then adjust your BIOS / UEFI by disabling secure boot, configuring boot for UEFI boot followed by Legacy Boot, and enable Compatiblilty Mode.  This will allow the Lenovo X1 Carbon to boot the Linux installation .iso.  Next boot using the standard Rhel / CentOS distribution and once at the partion management panel, select your install (typically Desktop or Development), navigate into the disk space selection area, select OK to confirm you'll use the free / unused space on your disk (which you made available earlier), and start the installation process.  It will proceed normally. The result will be a well running dual boot machine.  The boot manager will be Linux (e.g. Grub) and will automatically display when powering on the laptop.  By default it will boot to Rhel 7 / CentOS 7 (if you do not touch a key), if you'd like to boot to Windows 10, simply cursor down and select Windows 10.  It is not necessary to use the BIOS / UEFI manager to select your desired ope... This is my third X1 (all different generations) and I was very happy up till now. The problematic one has a Skylake processor and 512GB SSD and it seemed like a really nice config. The problem is that it doesn't want to shutdown nor wake up from sleep.First symptom: when shutting down, the pc seems to have shut down, but is still draining battery. If the keyboard FN-lock button is lighted, you can notice that this stays on. Also the fan will stay on if it was running before. The keyboard is even still responsive and you can turn on and off the different LEDs.Second symptom: when the pc goes to sleep, there is no waking it up. Also here the keyboard stays responsive for fn-lock etc.I've tried many things: reinstall windows 10 from scratch, reset the bios, upgrade the bios. Then Lenovo was actually very helpful to start: they swapped out the motherboard and when that didn't work, shipped the pc to a repair center. From here it went downhil: the repair was done in less than 5 hours according to the ticket (so I was impressed) but when I got the pc back I noticed why: they didn't repair it. They put on an image of windows 7 and since there the problem was not visible, called it fixed. Very frustrating. I put back windows 10 and guess what: the problem was exactly the same. When they shipped the pc, they had created a new ticket in the system, closing the original one. Now they even closed the second ticket although I already commented that the pc still doesn't work as it is supposed... Read more

About three weeks ago I upgraded BIOS on my laptop (as suggested by Lenovo Vantage) to latest version (N14ET45W (1.24), 3/01/2018). I am running Windows 10 64 bit. Shortly after that I started suffering quite frequent momentary freezing events where I had to wait between 10 to 40 seconds for the machine to continue working. During this period many of the running apps were closed and then reopened and I could not type or do any other thing. As you can imagine, this turned to be quite frustrating. I started searching at several forums, mainly Windows 10 related forums for a solution. U tried every possible solution, from updating all drivers to editing Registry etc. with no positive results at all. I was finally considering a full reimage of my machine when my latest resource turned to be rolling back my BIOS, as after checking on dates it seemed my suffering started shortly after my latest Lenovo Vantage drivers and BIOS update. Accordingly, I rolled Back from indicated BIOS to N14ET45W (1.23), 2/28/2018.Voila! This was the required solution. After that, my machine has been running smoothly, with no freezing events.Hope I had found a solution at any forum, and that?s why I am sharing this information here, as I really spent almost three weeks of frustration and unsuccessful searching/testing. I think Lenovo should test better and BIOS release. Hope my post may help other X1 Carbon 3rd Gen with a similar issue. DO NOT UPGRADE BIOS TO version (N14ET45W (1.24), 3/01/2018!!... Read more

I have receieved in the past two days 2 brand new Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon G5 Laptops (20HQS02000).  The first one arrived and had a faulty touchpad, and had this unusual problem of an encrypted system partition - even though Windows 10 bitlocker is not configured/activated/turned on.  So this unit was sent back (due to touchpad). The new unit, which is also a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon G5 Laptops (20HQS02000) - also has this issue. This is preventing me from running backup software on this device. (Acronis TrueImage). I wish to run it offline, so its fast and I can ensure a perfect snapshot. After noticing this I booted back into Windows to try and disable bitlocker. However it appears to not be turned on.  How is the drive encrypted? what is this rubbish? I find it highly irregular and would like some kind of an explination.

A:New X1 Carbon G5 Lenovo Win10 OS Image is encrypted by default you can't undo it even in windows.

I should add that I had purchased 5 X1 Carbons previously (like a month earlier).  I noticed that the default build of Windows 10 did not contain horrible bloatware like candy crush etc. And it did not have this encryption issue. Seriously why does lenovo ship such horrible OS images.. all this does is frustrate thier customers.

I recently acquired what I believe is the 2nd generation X1 Carbon (the one with the i7 4600U in it anyway), however the fan seems very loud and intrusive. Is there anything that I can do about this?

I'm trying to ascertain the warranty status of my Lenovo X1 Carbon, which was purchased second hand recently here in the UK. Inputting the serial number into the online system suggests that the machine still has warranty until 28/01/2019. But since I am not the original owner, will I still be covered by this warranty? I had thought that the warranty goes with the machine, until checking over the phone earlier today, when the agent suggested that I would need the original invoice/proof of purchase to be covered by the warranty. I had not thought that this was the case, and that I did not need documentation to claim the warranty. Could someone clarify this issue for me please? I have been trying to contact Lenovo by phone again for confirmation but their system appears to be down (I just get cut off every time).

Hi, I am trying to install a SIM card for my new X1 Carbon 6th gen with product number 20KH007BMX but Windows 10 does not seem to recognize this and says "Insert SIM". I heard from a collegue that has the same model that the hardware is there but that there are no drivers yet to support this. Can someone bring lights on this? As from the specs on the psref site, it´s a bit unclear if it´s the SIM or SIM card reader that´s not included http://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_6th_Gen?M=20KH007B%2B%2B
