Whenever I browse for a file to attach, my internet explorer 7 freezes?

Q: Whenever I browse for a file to attach, my internet explorer 7 freezes?

So I am running Windows Vista 64-Bit, and just recently, whenever I try and browse for a picture to attach to a email or upload to a blog, the browse window freezes, and I have to close internet explorer.

I tried uploading other files, such as music, and that works fine. However, as soon as I click browse, then pictures, and I scroll my cursor over to click on a folder, it freezes. Any advice?

Preferred Solution: Whenever I browse for a file to attach, my internet explorer 7 freezes?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there all,

I have been experiencing a problem on my laptop PC. I am attempting to browse and then upload files to my server for a web site but when I browse it seems a certain folder on images it freezes the application. I have tried everything including a "sfc /scannnow"; doing a Disk Scan and scanning a removing spyware.

Could this be software related or maybe a memory leak perhaps. Any solutions or idea would be appreciated.

thanks all.

A:Explorer.exe Freezes When I Browse File System

Hello rshillman

Explorer could be having a problem generating the previews (thumbnails) of the images. An image might be corrupted, or it might just be explorer`s fault.

Try turning off thumbnails. This means you will have no previews in any of your folders, but try it and see if it fixes the problem. you can always reverse this later if you want to by rechecking the box.

The thumbs.db file is generated by the Windows operating system. It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view). No harm is done by deleting thumbs.db files.

To disable storing the miniatures in a "thumbs.db" file for each folder.....

Click the Start button
Select Control Panel
Select Folder Options
Click the View tab
Check "Do not cache thumbnails"
Click the OK button

Then search on all your harddrives including subdirectories for "thumbs.db" you will receive a complete list of them. Highlight all the "thumbs.db" files and delete them.

Hi -

When using webmail and I try to attach a file to upload, after I click the "browse" button to locate the file, the browser closes (IE7 7.0.5730.11). Any suggestions on what to look for to correct the problem.

Thanks, Tom

A:Cannot attach file using Internet Explorer

Hi Tom, welcome to TSF!

Please don't ask the same question in 2 different sections, we can't help you efficiently if different advices are given in different places of the forum. I binned your other thread in XP since this section is better suited for it.

Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /R. Answer y when prompted to schedule the scan for next startup and restart the computer. The test will take some time. Once you're back within Windows go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. Go to the application section and double-click the latest winlogon event. Click once on the third button on the right (this copies the information in the memory) then right-click => paste it here.

Have you tried contacting your webmail service support ?

I have created a form with validations etc that goes to an email address via an action url (FormMail, cgi-sys thingo).

It works fine except that the browse/upload attachment field is delivering only the file name text to my email box (example.gif, example.jpg, etc.,.). I am wondering why the attachment file itself is not being delivered?

Is there another piece of JavaScript I should add so that the .gif or .jpg file gets delivered and not just the text of the file name, or is something else up here?

Thanks in advance for any feedback on this...

A:JavaScript :: Browse/file attach > submit

Can we see your JS code? Take a look at this:

Attachment: <input type="file" name="attachedfile" maxlength=50 allow="image/*" >

Dear All:

I have been experiencing an annoying issue in Windows (Windows Ultimate 64 bits, Home premium 64 bits and Windows 8 Pro 64 bits) min

After working well for a few minutes, the windows explorer freezes upon launch, only displaying the "favorites", "libraries" and "homegroup" icons in the left pane. The elements in the mentioned icons cannot be accessed and sometimes they have a magnifying glass on them and the icons on the desktop are blank.

Also, Control Panel windows is often empty after this error takes place.

This issue often, but not necessarily, comes about when i try to check the properties of a file, with windows explorer freezing immediately.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice to no avail.

Anyone has ideas on how to fix this? It's rendering my two laptops unusable.
Highly appreciate any useful advice.

Thank you,

Occasionally, when I try to attach a file in gmail, I browse but cannot find the file. I open the file through MS word or what not, and trace where it is saved to, but when I try to repeat that through gmail browse the file does not show up. It has dissapeared even though I can find it by going through the program or folder directly on the computer. I just can't find it to attach it.

I have not had problems with the files disappearing permenantly or failing to attach if I find they show up in the folder when I go to browse.

This is driving me absolutely bonkers! Last time i saved a copy of the file to the desktop directly and attached from there, but I don't want to be dealing with this. I have only had this problem with VISTA, and only a few times in the several weeks since I have had the new laptop. I run X64, and it is the standard version that came with my HP.

I have searched online and have not run across my problem, but if someone has asked it please disregard and provide a link.

Thank you!

I have a Windows XP client networked on an NT 4.0 server in a domain. All other network connections work properly, but Internet Explorer 6.0 cannot browse external web sites (cannot open page). The NT server uses WINS, as well as TCP/IP.

I believe this is a name resolution problem. I understand that creating a lmhosts and a hosts file on the XP client system can help resolve name resolution.

If so,

1. how should the file be written,

2. in which folder should it be placed on the XP client, and

3. is there anything else I should do to help name resolution?

so that the XP client can pull up web pages?

A:XP Internet Explorer cannot browse web on NT 4.0 server

Go on the XP network settings and define a DNS server that your ISP uses. This is not a local name resolution problem, it is an internet site resolution problem. Go to a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all and post back if there are any DNS servers listed there.

I installed a parental control program for Internet Explorer, but it was not allowing AOL to dial any numbers. Also, after shutting down the AOL, Windows XP would shut down the parental control program saying that it was malfunctioning. So I decided to delete the parental control program from my hard drive, and I used the uninstall program of the parental control program to uninstall it. After the uninstall, I noticed that I could dial and use the AOL browser as usual, but I could not use Internet Explorer. Any web pages that I tried to visit using IE would not display, and Internet Explorer would say, “This page cannot be displayed.” This is the same message that you get when you are not connected to the internet at all. Apparently, IE cannot recognize an internet connection when AOL is on. I contacted AOL, and they instructed me to a lot of things, e.g., resetting the IE settings to default, rebuilding the AOL adaptor using the AOL’s System Information utility, doing system restores, turning off AOL’s own parental control, and finally even reinstalling AOL. But none of these solved the problem.

The AOL guys told me that the parental control program must have done something to IE program files, or it may have done something in the registry that they cannot figure out. I searched the Microsoft data base and found and article (Article ID # 238550) titled “Cannot Browse the Internet Using Internet Explorer While Connected to AOL.” However, this article is for IE version... I've been trying to get my HP Pavilion dv4000 to recognize my wireless internet in my home for the past two days. It has finally done so and says it is connected to the wireless network. However, when i bring up the internet explorer it says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I've tried to fix it myself by entering some prompts into the command prompt program, but even things such as "ipconfig /all" won't work. It keeps telling me:

"An internal error has occurred: the request is not supported.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
Additional information: Unable to query host name."

I have tried changing the firewall settings as well, but it says it can't access that either. Also, I have tried the diagnostics program through Internet Explorer and it told me that there seemed to be something wrong with the Winsock program. It supposedly restored everything in that program to its default settings, then restarted my computer, but that didn't work either. The wireless icon in my tray says I'm connected and so does the connection when I bring up my available networks. I'm extremely frustrated and need some serious help! Please help and thank you for any suggestions.

What model of Dell is this?
Windows Vista is obsolete and support is dropping for IE8 and even IE9 which is the last IE for Vista. While it is possible for you to use the WSUS Offline Update to patch Windows Vista (to get to SP2, IE9 etc this is extremely time consuming and Windows vista will still be obsolete....
My advise is tho use the Windows 10 Insider 10130 as a stepping stone to get the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Please state your model and take a screenshot of your system so I know what processor and RAM you have. Also provide the hardware IDs so I can know other system variants:

A:Internet Explorer Freezes When Started & Firefox Freezes/crashes On Some Websites

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. You have a very severely infected system -- likely because of the lack of antivirus & firewall software. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I ReinstallWe can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee it will be 100% secure afterwards. Windows XP Pro SP3 froze and could not ctrl+alt+del, had to power off.
After reboot, noticed Trend Micro and Windows Update servers could not be reached. Trend said I wasnt connected to the internet, and Windows Update took me to a phony looking Google page. (Wireless network connection thru 2wire 2701HG-B). Also noticed clicking links would redirect me to adpages and antivirus sites, etc.
After repeated freezes and BSOD's I tried to do a Windows System Restore, but could not advance past the restore date selection. (clicking 'next' did nothing in regular or safe mode.) Decided to do a Dell System Restore (ctrl + f11 at durring boot).
After reinstalling windows, I did a ipconfig /all and noticed some bogus DNS addresses ( and I changed the wireless network config to "obtain DNS server address automatically." After this, I was able to do a Windows Update and get Trend Micro updates. I thought I was in the clear untill I froze up again, and after rebooting noticed again that I was being rerouted when clicking links (though could still connect to Trend and Microsoft servers).

File Explorer and Free Commander both freeze regularly. Task Manager says "not responding". Either will freeze after a single icon has been clicked. That is a second click on a different icon will freeze TM. This seems to occur most often when a .exe file is clicked. I've several downloads that I am trying to install to see if I like them but am having a real problem with TM. The file remains frozen until closed in TM. But if I reopen TM and click on that file it freezes. I thought TrendMicro might be the problem but I uninstalled it and the problem remains.

Hi there.

Yet another Windows 8 issue.
When I try to attach a file with Mail app, I get a blank screen with "Attach" and "Cancel" at the bottom right. I can't click on anything though and I can only exit the app completely. Even clicking cancel doesn't do anything.

This is not an issue about not knowing how to attach files.

My issue is that the built-in file explorer in the mail app doesn't work. It just goes blank and doesn't allow me to select anything or even show any files or folders.

Any ideas how to fix?

I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It's updated to the latest version.
I even did the Metro User Interface App Troubleshooter thingy.

If it was me I would use a gmail account from the Desktop.

I tried metro mail & it disgusted me.

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I hope I explained this clearly but if I haven't please let me know. I'm on a 64 bit, Windows 7 computer.

When I right click on a file in Windows Explorer (Vista Ultimate) the hour glass appears and after a while the Explorer window turns grayish. If I minimize it I can continue to work, even activate another Windows Explorer window. But if I attempt to close the grayed window the screen turns blue (Not the "window of death", and there are no error messages) and my desk top is lost. I can three finger salute, raising the task manager which tells me nothing is running, and I have to restart or shut down!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205, running VIsta Ultimate, 4 GB ram, etc., etc.

I tried to do a search on this Forum but had trouble and could do nothing, so I write this note.

Thanks for any help.

A:Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell e... Read more

I have been having a problem with Windows XP 64 Bit freezing when a file name in Explorer is double clicked. It happens with any file from any program. And it happens with files on a network as well as files on the PC's hard Drive. Actually "freezing" is not a good description. Operating in super duper slow motion then failing outright is a more accurate way to put it.

For example: I will open a folder on our network and browse to an Excel file I want to load. I double click on the name. Normally the file comes right up. However, more often than not nothing happens. After a couple minutes of waiting I have used Task Manager to discover that the "Not Responding" description is right next to Explorer's name in the "Applications" tab of Task Manager. Eventually the process will either bomb out completely and I'll get the "Send Email to Microsoft" dialog box. Or the parent application will load (in this case Excel) but without the file I selected being loaded.

And it's not just windows in Explorer. If I have an Outlook email with a Image attached, double clicking on the image name SHOULD take me right to the program associated with that file extension. However, it does the SAME thing as mentioned above.

I am running XP Professional 64 Bit with the latest updates as Service packs installed. The computer I'm using is a Dell Precision DWS490 that has an Intel Xeon CPU 3.20GHz along with 2 GB of Ram. Windows Update is set... Read more

This problem started "out of the blue" a couple of months ago. I had a tech look at it, and the only solution he came up with was to create a new user account, which worked. The problem has just come back. I can't find anything online to resolve it, so hopefully somebody here can help.

When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.

No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.

This is a business computer, so obviously we need to get this resolved ASAP. Please help!

I thought LibreOffice was a Ubuntu-only program?

There is a known issue with this happening in LibreOffice on Ubuntu- Try upgrading to the latest version.

Also, get the absolute latest version of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader you can find

I found this, which is related:

Save/Print as PDF crashes Word - Microsoft Community

Make the error show up again, force the program out, and show us the Event Logs from exactly when it happened, maybe there is something in there that can tell us why it is happening.

I know OpenOffice has a Windows version, is that the same as LibreOffice? You might be better off just buying a stand alone version of Microsoft Word, if you can- That way you can save to PDF's and there won't be any problems. Both Office 2010 and 2013 have good Save to PDF functions.

Got a brand new HP 15-F272 (I gather that's the model name). Decent laptop, but the integral disc drive won't play CDs or DVDs. When I put a CD in, it will start playing the first song, but after 26 seconds it stops, and then the drive shuts down after a few minutes of sitting there whirring, and it won't do anything after that; the window goes faded gray and it says "Not Responding". I tried two different media players, and both do the same thing. I tried a DVD instead and it will play the opening titles and the menu, but when you start playing the film itself, every few minutes it stops and jumps ahead like it's fast-forwarding. The sound cuts out and you see random frames from every 15 seconds until it stop again a minute or two ahead of where you were watching.
And then in either case when you go to File Explorer to open something else afterward you find the window faded and saying "Not Responding", which won't stop until you restart the laptop (at least I never tried waiting more than ten minutes to see if it cleared up). Is this a software or a hardware problem? I tried to get ahold of HP tech support but they don't seem to make it very easy to actually do that.

Some time yesterday my PC began acting strangely. Every time I open Explorer, I see "Working on it..." and have to wait several seconds before I can do anything. In addition, any changes to the file structure (deleting files, copying, moving, etc.) cause another freeze. This occurs on all drives, SSD or HDD.

There are no error messages in Event Viewer, no problems reported by SFC /SCANNOW, and no file system errors reported by CHKDSK. Any advice?

A:Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

Addendum: If I launch Explorer from "This PC" I see the "Working on it" text. If I launch via the task bar shortcut, it freezes quietly, and loads Explorer after 10-15 seconds. Accessing files through the command prompt has no delay, which leads me to believe this is an issue with Explorer. I tried rebuilding the search index, but that had no effect.

I created a file from a certain freeware, and everytime I right click it, drag it, or browse for it in something else (I can see it in Desktop), it freezes my entire Windows explorer and forces me to restart explorer.exe

Everything else on my computer is fine. I just need to delete this corrupted file.

Oh and, I dragged it into Kaspersky and it froze.

Please help.

A:Can't delete corrupted file on desktop -- Freezes explorer.exe

Hi Zorai

Did you try deleting it from Safe Mode? If you haven't tried that yet, give it a go.

If that doesn't work, perhaps the easiest way to delete it would be to boot your PC with a Linux Live CD (or DVD) and delete the file using it's file explorer. Easy to use versions are readily available (and free - since they are "open source") ... some of the more popular versions are from Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Knoppix, SUSE, Scientific Linux ... etc. Your favorite search engine will yield many results.

The desktop will be listed under the Users folder --> Users\username\Desktop -- since the file is on the Desktop, you should be able to delete it permanently from there.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. ... might have Kapersky run a full scan, too.

I have had a problem with IE freezing intermittently. This has been happening ever since I got this laptop which was about 3 years ago. I will be in the middle of browsing and IE will suddenly freeze. The only way I can get it to start working is to open a new IE browser. When the new window opens, my other IE session starts working again. This was happening with IE7 and I recently upgraded to IE 8 and I still have the same problem. This hasn't been much of an issue for me because I use Firefox, but I have an online system that I've had to start using and it must be run in IE. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Folks

Forgive me if this is not the correct thread to post my query & would be grateful if you can let me know where to post it to, but my problem is -

Yesterday my kids were looking on the internet on my lap top. I don't know what they did to it, but when I turned it on this morning, it does not seem to be working. I do get up to the desk top screen and then it seems to freeze no matter what I try to access - the internet or other Word applications. I presume the kids turned the lap top off yesterday without logging out in the correct way or not exiting from a website in the usual way.

Anyway, I then went into 'safe mode' and applications such as Word & Excel are working. However, the lap top freezes when I click on the internet explorer icon to go on the internet.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:
