Sony VIAO PCG-FRV35, No power, Power Ribbon Cable??

Q: Sony VIAO PCG-FRV35, No power, Power Ribbon Cable??

hi all,

I'm in a bind, and a friend referred me to this site, where I might be able to find some decent answers.

I run a small computer store in my hometown, and I was fixing a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV35 Notebook, It's fairly old, p4 with 512mb ram... But anyway, I was just removing spyware and viruses from it, and finished that up, then he said his sound wouldnt play, i started by reinstalling drivers and all that good stuff but it didnt play, I decided to lookinto the notebook to see if the speaker wires were connected and everything was fine there...

I pried off the faceplate for the powerbutton and LEDs and everything thats just above the keyboard, and I saw a ribbon cable connecting the power button and speaker circuit board to the motherboard, so i carefully unhooked it and put it aside, after finding no problems I rehooked it back up and tried to turn on the computer again... no power no post no sound nothing. It's like the power button is shot now. I've troubleshooted for 3 hours already on it, tried a multimeter to check to circuit connections, tried _everything_

I have no idea what to do now, this guy want's his laptop so he can work with it, and I dont feel like having to replace a laptop... this is like a techs worst nightmare >_<

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, is there any known issues were these power ribbons?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I haven't done any modifications or upgrades to this desktop. I got a blue screen (didnt catch the message it threw). I went to turn it on and after I hit the power button the power light comes on, the fans spin for a few seconds, and then nothing else happens. No hard drive noise and a blank screen...but the power light is still on. I tested the power adapter and it's throwing our 22.5 V. Please help :/

Its sounds like it could be the power supply or the motherboard.

Having trouble finding it. It's a XPS L502X. The ribbon reads 20696 E221612-S 80C 30V VW-1. Is this something I need to order through a third-party or do you think I'd have any luck finding it at a local repair shop?

Hi onlygothalf,
You may contact Dell's Out of Warranty repairs team from the link http://dell.to/1coLzuz (Applicable to US customers). It is very problematic to find such parts. With a little bit luck you can find such cable on eBay. Check it out.
P300 models in general have similar parts so you can also use such cable offered for Satellite P300 too.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCCW1S1E (red) with a Pioneer DV-RW TD09 drive.

Recently the ribbon cable on the underside of the DVD-RW drive keeps catching in the drawer and is becoming mangled. I have to carefully thread it back in with the drawer to stop it being squished.

So far the drive is functioning correctly but the ribbon needs replaced as it will not return to its former unkinked shape.

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a replacement ribbon for this drive? The number printed on the cable is type:

Youngshin-c awm 5443 105c 30v vw-1

I can't find any for sale. Is there an equivalent? Should I buy a reconditioned DVD-RW instead (a new one is too expensive). I have no clue about ribbon cables!

Sony and Pioneer were unable to help.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Kind Regards.

I'm having a bizarre issue where simply unplugging the official Lenovo power supply from the orange USB power port causes the laptop to immediately issue the subject warning, along with the detail "A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port".   This warning pops up every 5 seconds, unless clicked on, where reset/close options do nothing.  Crazy thing is, NOTHING is plugged into any USB port!   Reattaching the power supply does not clear the error.  Only rebooting with the power supply cable connected clears the error.   Remove the power cable, and the error instantly comes back.   All of the USB ports actually work fine, including the USB C port, whether or not this message is active. Maybe it is a hardware issue, but ALL the USB ports actually work fine.  I can't figure how unpluging the power source can trigger a USB power surge when nothing is actually connected and the battery is fully charged.  I've removed/reinstalled the USB Root hub, eXtensible Host Controller, Generic USB Hub, etc., drivers multiple times to no avail.   No errors with any devices are apparent in the device manager. I've seen a lot of issues reported about USB power surges but none like mine.   Anyone have any ideas about this?  System: Lenovo Yoga 900/16GB/Windows 10

I've got a computer that's turned off. I press the power switch, and nothing happens. Now, I unplug the network cable and the computer turns on.

Why does having a network cable connected prevent the computer's power switch from functioning? And why does unplugging the network cable cause it to power up?

The computer has worked fine for a year, but was recently moved to the other side of the room, and a new switch replaced the old network hub at the same time.

I have a ECS P4.945GCT-M/1333 (3.0) 775 mATX Motherboard and I installed Intel E2180 cpu and put memory stick on it. The computer won't boot - the cpu fan moved a second when I plugged in the power, and the stopped. If I disconnect the auxillary power cable, the CPU fan just can start, but of course it won't post. If I also disconnect the cpu fan, the power supply fan starts and I can see keyboard lights turned on for a second.

I measured the power on auxillary cable and it is ok: 2 12v and 2 GND. I am pretty sure that the power supply is good: I put on another power supply there and it is the same thing.

I have an HP 15 laptop (15-g014dx) that had/has a cracked back cover and bezel. I was replacing the bad parts with what I had purchased which did not match exactly to I was trying to get to hinge screws on case. Anyway in the processs of taking this apart I had to remove the ribbon from the power connection. I figured it was a pinned connection so I was surprised when I pulled the ribbon slide right out and the pin connector was still plugged in. Anyway I took the little black plastic connector that pluges into the 4 pin connector to put the ribbon back but lostit in the process. Can I order on of those 4 pin connectors? How does that ribbon make connection by just sliding under my missing part? Thanks in advance for your time and knowledgeWally

After shutting down, my computer will not power-on again unless I unplug the power-cord, then plug it back in (or use the psu on/off switch).

I have tried changing PSU, same thing happens.

My guess it has to be related to my motherboard.
I have the latest bios. I have reset the bios.
This happened after upgrading to a opteron 180 cpu. But I'm not sure if its related.
I have tried disconnecting the RAM, harddrive, graphics card to no avail. Also tried refitting the power-button cables.
Computer is rock stable once its on ...It powers on fine if I switch off the PSU with the button that is located on the psu, or pull out the power-cable before turning it on.

Any ideas what might be causing this?
Epox 9npa+ultra motherboard, amd opteron 180 (939), win xp sp3, 2gb ram

A:computer will not power-on unless I unplug power cable first

Unplugging the power supply, or disconnecting from the source allows everything to reset in the power supply and on the motherboard. This situation is most always associated with a defective power supply.

Since you have changed the power supply and the condition persists then the problem almost has to be a fault in the motherboard POWER GOOD circuitry.

If it were my machine I would just get in the habit of turning off the power supply after use, and live with it. Unless the problem is something obvious such as a "bulging" or leaking capacitor, chasing a problem like this is like chasing ghosts.

Hello everyone, I am new on this forum and I have an issue with my motherboard, the issue is as follow;
1- When I connect the 4 pin ATX 12v to the motherboard everything stop nothing works, the CPU fan stop working and everything else, The Motherboard brand is FOXCONN 865A01, even I change the Power supply and still have the same issue.

I would like if someone can show me the right direction on how to fix this issue.
Thank you in advance for any help someone can give me.

A:4 pin atx12v power cable causes power short

1. Welcome to Tech Support Guy
2. The usual cause of such an event is either
A. a defective motherboard - unlikely but could be
B. If this is a new build - a build error and the motherboard is shorting across a ground fault when that power is connected
C. You are using the wrong connector or connecting it on the incorrect orientation - eg the clip is not the correct way on the motherboard header
D. CPU error - bent pin on insertion of CPU

3. Please post some more detail of
is it new build
CPU details
What checks have you made if new build
Re 865A01 - which one please there are variants

4. I presume now having looked at the board it is NOT a new build, so when please did this first occur
and what problems were seen first, if any , before this
Most likely cause now, as I think the system is of some age is the board or the processor, if you refer to the 12v aux power

ATX 12V Power Connector: CN11
The 4 pin ATX 12V power supply connects to CN11 and provides power to the CPU.

Hi, I have an Acer V3-772G which I have had from new (Semi New from Amazon, warehouse cosmetic damage), Have never experienced any issues with powering on/off/charging until recently. Here is where I am up to; Laptop will power up from the battery.Laptop will not power up with cable alone (Battery removed). When powered up with the batter inserted ? the laptop will (according to the battery monitor on the laptop) charge the battery, however, the battery continues to discharge and the laptop will eventually run out of charge. When the power cable is inserted whilst the laptop is powered up, the laptop recognises that the cable is connected and will enable the "Plugged in" power settings etc. If I then remove the battery, the laptop powers off.Laptop seemingly charges the battery when it is powered off, however, even after a full night plugged in the battery doesn?t have the charge to start the laptop. Both the external cable and the battery are in perfect working order (Having tested both with a separate Acer laptop).I have opened and cleaned all connectors / fan / CPU / GPU inside the laptop and nothing looks out of place. All USB / Optical Drive / HDMI ports ETC all work without issues. I?m assuming a cable issue and not a main board issue because there are no other faults besides the DC cable (Battery will still power the laptop etc.). I have ordered a replacement 120w internal DC cable from the spare parts website to test my theory. In the meanti... Read more

You need to go into 'device manager' (which is a part of your Windows program). Click 'start menu': choose 'Help and Support' icon. Type 'device manager' in the 'search box'..print out the instructions. If you are new to troubleshooting your computer: print all instructions. It will save you a lot of time and mistakes. Look at the device manager screen, click on 'monitor', then 'properties'. Next do the same on 'display adapters' This will tell what's not 'operating properly' and whether it's the driver's. 'Help & Support' has much help to offer...but not all the answers by a long shot. Good Luck.

My Yoga S1 has contradictory, intermittent power issues that I'm trying to chase down. Culprits are bad power bric/cord/plug or power socket on mother board or power board that feeds into power button/led on. One day it blacked out and wouldn't restart to hard drive or windows stage. I did get an error code which I can't remember 5100 or 5500 poss?, that seemed to indicate the power board or ribbons to that needed replacement or re-attachment. So fiddled with it and it did fire up in windows all ok. Then ran out of power and died again. power button wouldn't light up. plugging in power unit did light up led as getting charge. Left it overnight and then it miraculously charged up. pushed power button light up twice then nothing. took out power board/detached ribbon, then it fired up to windows, fixed some hd errors and has been restarting without problems. Except now there is no plug showing on battery icon when plugged in. So not recharging but I'm sure the battery is good. And logically, the power brick and plug must be feeding electricity into laptop to get it to recharge enough to start up. So power socket and plug may be suspect with intermittent contact problems. Or the power board somehow is involved in this? I've ordered a new powerboard as easy screw in and cheap. My question about powerboard is does this control ability of plug to charge battery? power brick with new plug is next order from ebay. but the power socket, which see... Ok I am trying to fix a comp for a freind, its a sony viao PCV V1/G.
It's one of those horrible all in one units, where the entire pcis encased behind a monitor.
it has been getting blue screen crashes ( without staying on screen long enough to copy what the message is).
It also goes from being able to post to not being able to even do that and all they get is one long beep then another and so on.

I tried new memory, problem still arises. ran pc check and various other HD testing tools and all say HD is fine with no errors.

That being said when trying to load windows normaly, sometimes I can get all the way to the login screen then it crashes and then the very next time I will get a message saying that the system 32 config file is missing. I then reboot and it starts to load fine again.

I even tried just to reformat the drive but it just constanly reboots at random times so never get far enough to do that.

I also ran tests on the motherboard and cpu and they both appear to pass those tests.

The only other thing I can think of is that the power supply might be on its way out, as a while back I had similar problems with my own tower and after it being in your tech center twice they discovered that the psu was faulty.

The major problem im having is trying to source a psu for this particular model, as it seems to be as rare as snow in the sahara.

A:sony viao

Not sure if you can take it apart, and just use another power supply for a little while - isolate it down to that.

I know NOTHING about notebooks. I have an opportunity to pick up a Sony viao PCGX- G9 for about $500. From what I can determine the unit is stock, P3M, 128 meg, DVD, I think 20meg hd, it will need a new battery. I believe this system is about 2 years old. If someone could point me in the right direction to find information that would help me to determine if this is a reasonable price I would greatly appreciate it.

A:Sony Viao Need Information

Check out ebay for price comparisons. Here are some of the VAIO's listed.

$550 - PCG-F520 w/ P3 500mhz, 64mb of RAM, 6 Gigabyte Hard drive

$950 - PCG-FX150 w/ P3 700mhz, 128mb of RAM, 20 Gigabyte Hard Drive, Windows XP, DVD

$340 - PCG-FX140 w/ P3 700mhz, 128mb of RAM, 10 Gigabyte Hard Drive, Windows ME, DVD

$800 - PCG-Z505HE w/ P3 450mhz, 64mb of RAM, 8.1 Gigabyte Hard Drive,

$500 - PCG-505TX w/ 300mhz, 128mb of RAM, 3.95 Gigabyte Hard Drive

$1,000 - PCG-FX310 w/ 900mhz Celeron, 256mb of RAM, 15 Gigabyte Hard Drive, CD-RW, DVD

It generally seems like a pretty good price, VAIO's also tend to be more expensive laptops due to their slim/lightweight seize and good looks. I myself am a bit puzzled by laptop prices, so be sure to check around some more.
*I only listed prices of laptops that had met their reserve, or had a buy it now option. They were also relatively close to being sold (withing 3 days).

I have a sony laptop. Which says that it needs 19.5. The DC jack was broken so I have modified the connections. The adapter I am using right now is 19V. The laptop works fine without issues. The battery is dead and doesn't last long so can't see any effects on the battery if there are any.. Do I need to worry and change the adapter to 19.5 or 19 should work fine? Any ideas?

Naheed if the thing is working ok then I would just leave it as is.

As a general rule adaptors generally put out more volts than the device that is attached to them for example cars charging system (the adaptor) will run from anything between 13.8 - 16 volts - it is the battery that will take only what it requires in volts. Another example is a good quality charger I have that charges 1.5 volt (AA batteries) at the terminals actually puts out 4.99volts so the battery is the deciding factor in that circuit.
Now most computers will require a top voltage of 12 volts +/- 5% and inside the machine will be a circuitry that will regulate what gets what whether that is 12 5 or 3,3 volts again +/- 5% - outside of that tolerance will result in non function of the machine. The only thing that I can think of is that the battery in your machine may take a tad longer to charge if it could.

Ok so my laptop got the "blue screen" today and I have been trying to figure out how to fix it. I know about the safe mode but basically this is what happens. I will start it up, it will go to the viao screen, then it will go to the windows Dp screen, load for a few moments, and then it will go to the blue screen with the stop error. Now it told me to hit f8 when it got to the viao screen but I have tried that and it still goesnto the blue screen?

Help please.

Hello, I am working on a Sony Viao with Windows XP Home. It had some issues and was very slow, so I did a Recovery using the Sony Factory Recovery Panel. After doing so, it boots up with missing or corrupt \Windows\System32\Config\System, before that it was the \system 32\ntoskrnl.exe file which is no longer the case.

The computer is old and the person it belongs to does NOT have the original media, so I made a Windows Recovery CD, however, when I put it in and boot, it does nothing. I can't even get a choice screen. It is just black with a cursor. Could someone please help? Or maybe point me in the right direction? Thank you kindly, J

If your problem is you can not boot up from CD , there are two options

1- Bios settings that should be configured to boot up from CD first.
2- Your CD is not bootable, try another one.

alright, being new here an' all, I don't really know much about computers, but I think it all started when I couldn't turn my laptop on at all, my friend nikki said to take the battery out and unplug it from the wall and hold down the start button, then plug it back in and try again... so I did and it worked, that was a couple of weeks ago, tonight it did it again, only after I got it to turn back on, it shut itself down, and wouldn't turn back on. Well I'm kinda persistent, so i did it again, only this time I didn't put the battery back in... and it worked until I put the battery in.... every time the computer even touches the battery it seems to shut down, Right now I'm plugged into the wall, but I could really appreciate some help here. Any Ideas?

A:Sony Viao shutting down problem.

It really sounds like a bad battery pack. If you know how, you could check the battery with a voltmeter. Though that would not be a definitive test, if the voltage matched (nearly) the stated voltage on the sticker, the battery may be all right.

Has the battery had a lot of use? How old is it?

Some batteries actually conduct electricity when they are ruined and may be shorting out your internal charger.

I can't get my Sony VAIO to connect to the Internet via wireless or ethernet. It was working fine and then suddenly lost all Internet connectivity. Under the status it says "connected with limited access." I have an iPad and my smartphone running on the network so I know it's not a network issue. Any suggestions?

I just did a virus cleanup on a Sony Viao desktop, probably about 5 years old. They're wondering if I can get it to go any faster.

It's running a P3 750 about 128 MB Ram and Win98. If it didn't have a 15 inch flat screen connected to it, I'd say it's probably not worth it.

What do you say? Still worth of another stick of memory, maybe a new processor?

I have a Sony Viao (PCG-FX170) laptop, with operating system upgraded from Win ME to Win XP.
Its firewire port will not operate external (LaCie) DVD writer and after buying a PCMCIA card with 4 firewire outputs, they don't work either.
Problem seems to be: no voltage on the firewire socket to "turn on" the DVD writer.
Windows says Firewire drivers are "working normally".
Is this likely a hardware or software problem ?
Thanks, [email protected]

A:Sony Viao firewire problem

There should be an external power supply for that DVD writer. A firewire port doesn't have the power to run that drive.

Well, I done it again, offered my services as a computer tech for free and got handed a can of worms. You would think I would learn my lesson!

It's a Viao laptop (XP) with:
AMD Athelon 2000+
Gforce4 video
DVD/CD-RW optical drive
Bunch of other stuff not really relevant...

Anyway, it was so clogged up with spyware, viruses, trojans that it was almost unusable. Got all the parasites cleaned up, then was told the CD drive didn't work right. I found it reads audio & data CDs OK, and even writes files to itself the first time a new CD is inserted, then, no soap.

XP reports there is no disk in drive thereafter, and refuses to play. I am a confirmed 98SE user and not all that interested in XP. Don't get me wrong, XP is fine, just don't like the idea of renting my software from Billy, and having to call him up and kiss his A** to make changes in my computers.

I'll get off the stump and ask if anyone has had similar problems and how they fixed them.

By the way, all those nasties that infected the laptop has rendered IE useless , I know M$ was ordered to make IE removable by the court, but was wondering if that was a good idea. Loaded Firefox on it for a browser, Great software.

I deeply appreciate your time in answering, thank you, thank you, thank you

When I try to install iTunes for Windows 10 64 bit, I get a message that says a 32 bit process is blocking it, remove it and try again. After searching on the Internet I'm wondering if the age of the computer and the graphics card are causing this. .Any help or advice with this matter will be appreciated.

A:Sony Viao Won't Install iTunes 12.4.1

Windows updates seem to have resolved the issue as posted. iTunes installed and works well.
