Unable to remotely install IE7 using PSEXEC

Q: Unable to remotely install IE7 using PSEXEC

I am trying to determine why IE7 installer fails to work when using PSEXEC to remotely install it?
I have the IE7 installer in c:\temp
This does not work (The switches are valid)

psexec \\new_computer c:\temp\ie7.exe /quiet /update-no /norestart /log:c:\temp

It installs fine with the same switches if I manually run it locally but I *MUST* remotely install it as I have multiple PCs to manage and don't need to bother the users
Below is the log it generates yet it's not making any sense.

Preferred Solution: Unable to remotely install IE7 using PSEXEC

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

Hi,

Regarding the issue, I’m just wondering that if you can collect the IE7 log (%windir%\ie7.log)for me, then we can try to find the cause.

Please understand, we need more detail information to troubleshooting the issue. You may upload the file via SkyDrive and post a link here.

Also please refer:

Also if you want remote install IE7, you may use the .msi file to do. Please refer:

Hello all, I have a question about setting up Remote Desktop on PCs in our company. For most of the PCs on our network Remote Desktop is disabled by decree of the management. When I do need access to a machine I'll use psexec to enable the service then I'll disable it when I'm done. Some of the PCs are accessed by normal (non-admin) users on the network using Remote Desktop - we're looking for a way to remotely edit the list of users that can access the PCs that way - it'll be one specific user allowed per machine so a group policy doesn't seem to be the right way to go... Basically I'm looking for a way to remotely edit a machine's local secpol, specifically the "Allow logon through terminal services" setting.
I found this MS article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457125.aspx that mentions the SeNetworkLogonRight but I don't see that in the registry... I must be missing something stupid here - there has to be an easy way to do what I'm trying to do... Does anyone know what that easy way is?
This is the command I use to enable remote desktop - it seems like something similar could be used to edit the userlist? Argh!
psexec \\machine reg add "hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\terminal server" /f /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0

-Oh, it's an Active Directory Domain, all the PCs are WinXP - Thanks!

Hi there,
As described in the following link on how to run a disk defragment using Disk Defragmenter via PsExec http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-run-disk-defragmenter-on-a-remote-computer/,
would you say that all parameters mentioned by the author in the blog are applicable? If not, please could you specify which parameters aren't needed in order for me achieve this task efficiently, I've been trying to understand all the parameters for PsExec
and from what I can understand I don't think parameters -s and -f are applicable as mentioned in
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx. Reason why I say this is that when you when specify parameter -s (using system account) in the command and log on as a
user of that remote computer in which I've been using Remote Desktop to achieve this as well as Command Prompt, the prompt comes up with "Disk Defragmenter exited with error code 0" straightaway when logging on and logging off as that user on the
remote computer, the same also applies when logging off as that user on the remote computer when running the command when being logged on as that user whereas if you don't specify parameter -s the message is delayed for longer which is what I would expect,
I'm assuming error code 0 means that the task has completed successfully as mentioned in the following link
http://aumha.org/a/defragerr.htm. Another reason as to why I don't think parameter -f is needed is that the program (Disk Def... Read more

Hi,
We are unable to take backup of "Favorites","Desktop" folders in a user profile when scanstate is run remotely using "Psexec \\computername -s scanstate.exe /ue:*\* /ui:domain\user /i:miguser.xml /config:config.xml /c" command.
These folders are redirected to a shared folder on a server and when we try to see the folders by using UNC path(\\computername\c$\users\username) on the user's machine they dont appear under user profile. Even though "Documents" are redirected,
we are able to take backup of the "Documents" folder.
However, when scanstate is run locally on the system, all folders are backedup to usmt.mig file. We are using "miguser.xml" and "Config.xml" for scanstate, since we need backup of "Documents","Desktop" and "Favorites"
only. After searching over internet, we doubt that, this behavior has got something to do with "Shell Folders" and "User Shell Folders" in the registry under "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\explorer\shell folders",
where paths to all user profile related folders information is stored. We dont find "Documents" folder there, may be thats the reason why we are able to take backup of only "My Documents" and not the rest of the folders (Favorites,Desktop).
When scanstate is run locally, the backup of "Favorites","Desktop" and "Documents" is... Read more

I have a print server running 2003 standard sp2, I have been looking for a way to allow helpdesk staff install and manage printers without logging into the server and without adding them to the admin group.

So I added them to the power users group and the print operators group, that worked fine they were able to UNC ( \\servername ) to the server and install printers, drivers, as well as uninstall drivers? printers ect????.
Now the problem??? this works great from an XP box, but when we try it from a windows 7 machine we get access denied. More specifically it acts like it is going to install the printer then when it comes to the driver installation part it fails ?Printer driver was not installed. Access is denied.?

No changes have been made to the permissions I can log into an XP machine with my profile and it works fine log out go to a Windows 7 machine use the same credentials and I get the above message access is denied. I am an admin of both machines on the windows 7 machine I have UAC turned off completely. Running XP Pro SP3 & Windows 7 pro both are 32 bit machines.

I should also add that I have made the necessary group policy changes to allow printer operators to Load/Unload device drivers and under the local policies/security options I ensured that the Prevent users from installing printer drivers was Disabled.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

How do you enter the credentials on the Windows 7 machine? I've noticed that you have to use "domain\username" rather than just the username in some cases.

Back story:
I am part of a large organization that has a large amount of computers on our domain controller. I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.

Hey all, I'm trying to change a bunch of snmp parameters remotely and not having any luck. I can go into Computer Management, right-click and connect to the remote computer and open up the service but when I try to change something I get the following error:

Code:
Failed to read a Registry key. This may be due to lack of resources. Try closing other Windows applications to fix the problem.
Even when both computers don't have anything running I can't get in. I've tried logging into my computer as the Domain Administrator but I still get the same error. I can access my 2k12 servers and a few remaining XP machines but none of my Windows 7 computers. Any ideas? Suggestions? Recommendations?

Thanks,

Welcome to Windows Seven forums!

From your post I understand your home PC is window 7 x64. But what OS your office PC had and presently has?

This upgradation is only hardware with same OS or both or only software?

We need this information to attempt to give you an answer.

As you are able to access your system from within your office, this could be a configuration issue with the firewall in your office and the group policy on your office server.

Hi

I've got a server running, amongst other things, Apache 2.0 and TightVNC servers. These are installed as system services and are configured to start automatically when the system boots.

However, if I reboot the machine, I can't access the server remotely using a VNC client or get to any of the Apache web sites in a browser until I physically go to the server and log in locally as a valid user. Once logged in, everything is accessible remotely as it should be. If I then log off again, I'm again blocked from accessing the services remotely.

I'm pretty sure that the services continue to run, because I can access a session using Remote Desktop Connection and view the Services console which shows that they are running. I just can't get to them.

I've turned off all firewalls and still the problem is the same.

Can anyone suggest any tips to fix and/or investigate this?

Thanks

Ben Lobo

You can still do it that way, if you must, but the printer has to be shared, and you have to have the proper drivers ready for the install.

Hello Fangzhou CHEN,

Per your instructions below.  Is the U/P my admin info or the users?  Please advise.

We could use the PsExec tool to conduct the remote control.
1. Download the tool and copy to file to C:\Windows\System32

2. Run cmd as administrator
3. We could run the command psexec  \\ <computername >
-u <username> -p <password> <command>to run command in remote computer.

I am in the process of putting a batch file together to detect and force microsoft updates to a machine or a group of machines using PSEXEC.exe and a VBS script created by Rob Dunn and posted over at the forums at www.wsus.info.

I have listed below the steps needed to complete this task and would like it put together (if possible) in a batch file, UPDATE.VBS is the name of the script that I copy over to the machine and the PSTOOLS dir is the directory that PSEXEC resides in.

If I run these commands one at a time everything runs well, I would just like to know if it is possible to make this a "one step process"?

Ok here are all the cmds I need in order to run the script

1. net use \\TARGETMACHINE\C$ /user:"DOMAIN\DOMAIN USER"

2. copy update.vbs \\TARGETMACHINE\C$\update.vbs

3. exit back into PSTOOLS directory

3. psexec.exe \\TARGETMACHINE -u "DOMAIN\DOMAIN USER" -p PASSWORD -e -i cmd.exe /c cscript.exe //B C:\UPDATE.vbs

I have tested this on multiple machines and everything is running well. Any suggestions on how to set this up in one batch file? Of course I will eventually setup the PSTOOLS dir on a network drive instead of my local machine.

Hi,
I have a question regarding psexec or an alternative perhaps? Basically, I have a batch file I made, that I want to allow a friend from a remote machine to exec. However, I want him ONLY to be able to exec this file, and not mess around anywhere else on the machine. Psexec gives too much privilege and he could open other things, etc. I did come across the program RemoteExec, but after the 15 day trial that won't be of much value to me(not paying 400$ for this singular occurrence). Any ideas or help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks

A:Psexec related question

Why do you want to give remote access to this file? This kind of sounds like a classroom project you are trying to get help with.

At any rate, what about installing Apache web server and having the file access granted through the webserver?

Has anyone experienced this or similar recently? We've seen multiple unrelated clients get hit with something that resembles a worm. It appears to use mimikatz to steal passwords for the currently logged on user (Active Directory) and then reaches out to other PCs on the network and uses psexec to run something. I assume it's trying to steal the next computer's username/password and so on. Processes can be seen in Task Manager running under other user accounts that are NOT logged into the PC. The users (which have never otherwise logged into the PC) then have profiles in C:\users. This process leaves the PSEXECSVC Windows service (visible in services.msc) and saves mimikatz.exe and other random KB_______.exe and ms_______.exe files in C:\ProgramData and C:\users\username\appdata\roaming and \appdata\local\temp. It seems to disable the Windows Firewall and Windows Update services, and it breaks Show Hidden Files so it can't be turned on or off.

Users have complained of audio/music playing in the background, and we've found .mp3 files in c:\users\username\appdata\roaming. It's hard to recover from this because cleaning the PCs one by one is great until an infected one is turned back on with network connectivity and hits all the cleaned/rebuilt ones again.

The thing that's most worrying to me is that I can't find much about this online. This appears to be the closest thing: http://blog.cylance.com/operation-cleaver-net-crawler

First thing first, it would have to eb running at domain adminlevel to execute through psexec, so change the administrators password pronto.
Also setup a group policy to disallow psexec.exce from running on C:\*
Thirdly make sure no user account has admin rights, ecspecially global admin rights or local admin rights.
If its conencting to each amchine IPC$ then im assuming it has the Domain\Administrator account token/password.

Ok imma give a full rundown of the situation. Currently on the network we are on because of the way it is setup wake on lan doesn't work, so SCCM has at best a 70 success rate for patching. So I am currently spending a couple days a week remoting into computers and running a batch file to manually update computers. I need a way, that isn't psexec to execute a batch file on a remote computer. If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Additional Notes
- Batch file is on share drive atm.

A:Run Batch File On Remote Computer Without PsExec

So, you are using RDP and remotely logging into the computer? If that's the case, you should be able to put the batch file on a network share, and then execute it while you are in the RDP session.

I have created a couple batch files to easily update firefox on users computers. See the scripts below.

This executes a batch file on all computers listed in the firefoxusers.txt file.
Code:
psexec @firefoxusers.txt -u [I]AdminUsername[/I] -p [I]password[/I] c:\installers\firefox.bat
This is the file that is executed from the one above to install the file silently from a shared drive.
Code:
pushd \\server\applications\firefox

firefoxsetup.exe -ms

popd
My problem is that when I run this script I have no idea if the software was installed correctly or not. I am looking for a way to just output what was run so I can go through and see if anything failed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

My command is
psexec -u domain\user -p password \\machineName -c abc.bat
I am trying from windows 7(64 bit)  machine. The remote machines are xp and windows 7(32 and 64 bit).
In XP machines, it is working and also in some windows 7 machines. But in some windows 7 machines it give message-
"Could not start PsExec service on target machine.
Access is denied."

If I try to execute psexec command from XP machines, it works to all machines.
Suddenly what happen I do not know but one of the windows 7 machine( where psexec was not starting) , psexec started. but not in other machines.
Now I am very much confuse here exactly what happen. and what is the issue.
Please help. It urgent.
Thanks.

A:Could not start PsExec service on target machine. Access is denied.

Hi,

When opening the Command Prompt, please right click it and run as Administrator. Meanwhile, make sure the user has administrator privileges on target PC. If the issue
persists, try to disable UAC on both sides.

As far as I know the Security Level on Windows 7 is higher than the level on Windows XP.  Therefore, 'psexec' works to all machines.

Best Regards,

Niki

If you formatted the hdd and installed Windows from a legit source then I would think....if malware is involved...either
an external drive or your router is reinfecting your computer.

I am running Windows XP Pro on a Dell Desktop.

The initial problems started when I installed Roxio Copy & Convert 3 for use with my PSP. I restarted after the install, utilized the program and then turned off the machine. The next morning I had an error message as I opened Windows that states:

"bcmwltry.exe - Ordinal Not Found
The ordinal 968 could not be located in the dynamic link library LIBEAY32.dll"

This error message does not go away no matter how many times you click 'OK'. I believed that I had found the root of this problem (bcmwltry.exe having to do with my Motorola Wireless Tray Applet). I disabled my wireless card since I am not currently using it, but the error message remained. I then decided to uninstall Roxio.

After uninstallation completed, I was asked to reboot the machine. I did so and that is when the rest of the problems started.

All of my .exe files were now non-recognized by Windows and would not run. I can right click on a program and select the open-with option and choose a program from that list, but if the appropriate program is not listed there, then I cannot run the program.

I then tried to do a system restore to see if that would make any difference.

Then all of the non-recognized files turned into Microsoft Excel files.

I am unable to install any program from the internet. Every time I try to download something, it automatically becomes a non-recognized file and prompts me to search the internet for the appropriate... Read more

Hey everyone,

My girlfriend has had her computer for well over a year now. Recently it's been crashing alot, mostly with the bluescreen, but on occasion just freezing.
Errorcode on bluescreen is: ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Recently it has been impossible to enter windows, so we figured it'd be best to re-install windows. All we have is a windows XP CD, which is fine.

But when I put in the CD, it crashes with the same blue screen, I googled the errorcode and I found out that alot of people has had simmilar issues, and fixed it by going into BIOS and changing SATA mode from AHCI to IDE, but i cant find anything in BIOS that allows me to do so..

Here's a couple of the links I found on google, with suggestions on how to fix it.

Hello guys,

from a fresh install of windows 10 i try to install the drver for my IGPU Intel HD 530. each time i do that i get a BSOD with this message:

Or sometimes it's

i've tried drivers from motherboard manufacturer CD, website and intel and some autodetect driver software .
i always get the same behavior:

the screen start blinking several time ( black screen) before showing the BSOD then reboot and repeat it self.
even the driver downloaded by windows update have the same impact.
i've managed to install it in safe mode but when i restart in normal mode i get the same behavior.
i've tried 2 different monitors, VGA and HDMI , tried with UEFI on/off => same result.
i've tweaked onece the tdr delay to 8 second, but didnt work.

i really need some help here, i'm desperate!

A:Unable to install Intel HD graphics driver on a fresh install of WIN10

The most likely suspect is a bad video chip.

Now it could be a power related problem too, or heat, but if you have used good parts and a cool case and have tried multiple versions of the driver then it starts looking like hardware failure is likely.

Who makes your 550W power supply?

Double check all of your connections.
And you could go into the UEFI/BIOS and reset all defaults - don't do any tweaking until this problem is resolved.
Is that board running the most recent version of the BIOS?

HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.

A:monitor drivers unable to install on fresh windows 2000 install

Are you really referring to the monitor drivers or the Dispay Adapter drivers? The symptoms you describe sound like the latter issue.

Monitor drivers are no big deal to install, and even if you don't, Windows should use compatible plug and play drivers. Still it's a good idea to install them -- but you get them from the Monitor vendor site. You get the Display Adapter drivers from the Display Adaptor vendor's site.

What Display Adapter model do you have? And are they properly installed?

To install a Monitor driver, you download and unzip the .inf file from the Vendor. Then you select "update driver" and browse to the location of the file you unzipped. Once installed your Monitor should be recognized by model number.

Hi,

I recently did a clean install of Vista Home Premium x32 and upon completion am unable to connect to the internet. I received the following error: "windows unable to install ethernet controller." Upon accessing Device Manager, I noticed yellow exclamation marks associated with my network controller. I have an Acer Aspire 5536-5224 notebook. Windows could not locate the drivers on the machine and I cannot connect to locate. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure where to begin searching for the driver! Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a Sony RS-220 desktop w/ XP home w/ SP2 & all updates since that's unable to auto install generic device drivers. I discovered this when I tried plugging in a couple different USB flash drives & it would just stop at the found new hardware wizard. Running the wizard w/ "install the software automatically" & also enabling "also search windows updates" returns unable to find device driver. The USB flash drive was the only bang in device manager. I uninstalled the usb controllers, rebooted and amazingly the controllers wouldn't auto reinstall. Suspecting the behavior extended to more then just USBs/the chipset I uninstalled some unneeded devices (56k modem & 1394) & they also wouldn't auto reinstall. I went to the sony website & strangely Sony doesn't list the chipset available for download w/ the other drivers I downloaded the chipset direct from intel & installed it but that didn't work either. I've tried many other things to no avail. Malware scans (spybot, AVG AV, rootkitrevealer)...all came up clean. I've tried a new admin user profile, cCleaner registry cleanup, resetting registry permissions w/ subinACL, setting related windows services to automatic, checkdisk /r. Another thing I thought about doing was uninstalling the PCI controller, but I think I recall that can get ugly. Ultimately the only thing that allowed me to get my usb controllers, usb hubs, modem, 1394, & usb drive working was to "ins... Read more

I'm having very much the same issue with a friends Dell w/o ps/2 ports. He removed ALL of his USB devices and is stuck at the new hardware wizard with no functioning mouse or KB.

It sounds like you managed to get yours going. could you explain to me (in simple terms) how you managed it?

Make sure that the Cryptographic Service is started.

In 'My Computer' properties, Hardware, Driver Signing, choose 'Ignore'. (attachment 1)

In Device Manager, showing 'Hidden Devices', check the driver for a Mass Storage Device. Is Usbstor.sys, digitally signed by Microsoft? (attachment 2)

Hi, I'm missing what actually caused the issue in the first place? i.e what event caused the behaviour to start?
If you don't force it to use a specific .inf what error does it show? 'No suitable drivers found?'

When trying to install XP on my machine all is well until it reaches the point of actually installing windows. At this point I get the blue screen of death with the following code ( STOP! 0x0000007b.etc. If I then remove the XP disc from my "D:" drive and put in a linux lucid 10 or any other linux distribution and reboot, the machine goes about its business and installs that Operating system without any problems.

The machine is a HP Media Center M8425F PC with a IPIBL-LB REV 1-51 motherboard,3 gigs of ram, intel core2 2.667 mhz chip and an average built in graphics card.

I would certainly appreciate anyones thoughts on this problem as I have never come across it before.

So long story short i was continuously getting notification to install some particular updates again and again .

They were : KB2446704 , KB2418241 , KB2539631 . ( All of them are security updates for .net framework 2.0 sp2 and 3.5 sp1)

So whenever i installed them and restarted my pc they used to show up again . So today i decided to download Windows install clean up utility and uninstall and reinstall .net framework 2.0 sp2 .I uninstalled but when i tried to install it again i couldn't . It showed as a " setup error " .

Note :
Also i have an windows xp sp3 .

Here's what I'd do, Caveat Emptor & all that stuff...1. Run the FixIt in KB 971187 - How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9711872. Retry the Update(s).3. If the Update(s) fail(s), proceed to Step 4.4. Download .Net Cleanup Utility: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx5. By using the Cleanup Tool, uninstall all .Net Framework entries. (You will not be allowed to remove the .NET Framework 2.0 on Vista and 3.5 on Windows 7 because they are Operating System components.)6. Reboot.7. Download and install the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 by clicking the link below (this will also install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2):http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en8. Reboot9. Check for & install all important/critical updates/security patches/etc (do not select any optional .Net updates yet) for .Net thru Windows Update.Hope this helps.
