Issue of Desktop crash and Explorer opening My Libraries

Q: Issue of Desktop crash and Explorer opening My Libraries

When my desktop crashes of Windows Explorer and I ctrl alt delete and then go task manager and then go to file and run and retype explorer and ok, it opens my libraries and if I type explorer.exe the same thing happens again and libraries open up
If I type in C:\Windows\explorer.exe in the run and press ok then my desktop and task bar returns. I did sfc file checker and all is good and no integrities found.

I also did a clean boot and the same thing happened again.
Can u please help me fix this issue

Preferred Solution: Issue of Desktop crash and Explorer opening My Libraries

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For example: If I create an Excel file and try to save it to my desktop, when I click "File" then "Save As" and then click on my desktop icon, Excel freezes and crashes, same with Microsoft Word. If I open a program such as MS Word or Adobe Acrobat, and navigate to my desktop to open a file, the programs freeze and then crash when I click on the desktop icon.

I can save files to other locations on my PC such as "My Documents" or some other file I create, and I can open files from locations other than my desktop. The crashes only seem to be related to the Desktop. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi guys,

Having a bit of trouble here! There's a certain folder on my external HDD which causes Windows Explorer to crash when I attempt to open it. I've tried running a full virus scan and nothing has been detected, so I'm ruling out anything like that. Could it be down to file corruption?

Also, strangely enough, I copied the folder to my desktop and was able to open it and look through the files, however, as soon as I try to sort the files by certain parameters (date, size, etc.), it causes Windows Explorer to crash again.

Any idea what's causing this and how it can be fixed?

Many thanks!

(P.S. I apologise if I posted this in the wrong section!)

There is a big chance that something that is attached to explorer.exe is causing this issue, have you tried a clean boot? otherwise try to disable all Explorer.exe plugin's, see this article for that

I have several folders that when I try to open them-- They will open and then a "Send Error Report" window pops up stating that "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". The folder will then be forced to close (along with any other folders that I might also have open at the time) and the screen goes blank for a second and then my desktop reappears with all the programs restarting in lower right corner.

One folder will even do the same thing if I just hold my cursor over the folder for a second. It will generate "error" window and semi-crash my windows.

It is not on most of my folders, just 3 or 4. I cannot delete the folders because it will do the same thing as opening it. I cannot move it because same things happens.

I have tried all the fix programs that I have and they crash as soon as the affected folder is scanned.

I have even tried doing scanning by Symantec and Panda and Trend Micro online and they just mysteriously close as soon as they get to the affected folders. BitDefender, Spybot, Ad-Aware and McAfee Stinger also crash or freeze up. So does Norton SystemWorks in its Virus Scan and its WinDocter...

I have tried to delete or move in "Safe Mode"-- same results.

Does anyone have some idea of what is causing this and how to fix it? (Hopefully without having to reformat)

So, a few months ago i was attempting to clean up the mess that is my desktop computer. I'm an artist, and have photoshop documents and jpegs pretty much in ever corner of this thing, and i was tired of it being unorganized. As i was moving a large folder from my desktop to my documents however, windows explorer encountered a problem and had to be closed. The computer flashed a bit at me, and then went back to the desktop. Now, i am unable to access my documents folder, as it will give me the same error each time. I have 5 years worth of artwork i was attempting to clean up and back up at the time. (yes yes, i realize it should have been done sooner. so sue me)

How can i fix this? I have browsed the internet looking for solutions, but no one has a similar situation. I have changed antivirus programs, run ccleaner, defragged the computer, changed startup options, and done pretty well everything that i know how to do. A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

The first problem might not belong in this section, but the others should, so I'm just posting them all here.First of all as it might help my problems be fixed more easily, I'm running Windows XP and my video card is a Sapphire X1950 Pro.Problem 1, the worst of all: sometimes when I open a folder that contains video files, windows explorer will crash. And usually what will then happen is "Dr Watson Post Mortem debugger", whatever that is, will crash as well, but not always. After this happens, sometimes I'll be able to continue what I was doing but other times my computer will freeze up and I have to restart.Problem 2: This happens every time I open a video file. The first time I open a video file, only sound plays and no video. When I then open another video file, be it the same one or a different one, everything will play just fine the second time, as long as I kept the first one open while loading the second. This happens no matter what the file type and no matter what player I'm using.Problem 3: This is a very minor annoyance with MusicMatch Jukebox. If it can be fixed, great. If not, I only really care about the first 2 things. I have buttons on my keyboard for stop/play/pause/back/forward/mute/volume, now then, when MusicMatch is behind any other windows (or minimized) everything works fine. However, when it is the top window, the back/forward buttons will skip a song and go back or forward twice instead of only once. The second prob... Read more

O.K. so here's the problem. I have a client that was hit with Antivirus 2009 Malware and a ton of other trojans. I removed the culprits with Malwarebytes Anti-malware. After 6 runs it finally came out clean. Ran AVG antivirus -again came out clean-. Now the problem is the Explorer.exe (the shell) will not load at startup, but you can open it in task manager. Is there a way to stop this behavior from happening. There are so many different answers to fix this. But none of them seem deifinite. These are some I found......-Reload the O.S.- -Run a repair from XP CD- -Check the REG. for the login UI and check reg entires-. Do you all have any ideas...I need your help.

A:Explorer.exe Not Opening Desktop.

your problem is the desktop isn't showing, right? i don't know why you want to complicate things. simply run a windows repair from the xp setup disk. i think you can even run it from inside windows without the need to boot cd. ctrl+alt+del for program manager, then file>new task, then browse, choose the xp setup drive, locate the setup executable and run it. then choose repair windows.

When I try to click on desktop in one of those sub explorer window that programs use to open/save files, the program would stop for few seconds and start loading icons one by one.

It suddenly started happening and I have no idea where that came from.
There are about 30 icons, and about 90% of them are shortcuts. They do not point to any invalid path.
It only happens when I try to access the desktop, and it's universal to all programs.

I also noticed that when I try to refresh on the desktop by pressing F5, the icon disappears for 3 seconds and refreshes. This may lead to a fact that there is something wrong when trying to load desktop, but I can't figure out the cause.

Anybody have guesses what the cause would be?
The only program I'm running is Bluetooth Manager in the background.

Why has my Internet Explorer, (msn.com) app on the Start screen decided to start opening on the Desktop. I did have an IE in my taskbar for opening it on the desktop. I ' Unpinned' the one on the Taskbar but it doesn't make any difference, it still opens on the Desktop. It has to have a simple answer! In fact I've just noticed that 'Wordpad' & 'Notepad' are acting the same way!

A:Internet Explorer opening on Desktop?

Hi there
Did you unpin the "Immersive" IE from the tiles and create one for the "Normal version" of IE.

What happens if you go into the start screen and type I (you don't need to type any more than that) and launch the version of Internet explorer the search throws up. If it is the one you want then pin it to start screen.

Notepad is a desktop app so it works "As designed". Same with Wordpad. (At least that's as far as I know - these are really OLD apps so unlikely to be "Metro-ized"). I might be wrong on this one but I'll test it with the latest build (9379) of Windows 8 -- that should show me how those apps arte supposed to work on an untouched system.

Can you restart explorer after it crashes (from Task Manager)?

Beyond that, let's try looking at these reports (if you are able to generate them):
1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/
2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

If I understand you correctly, you can easily modify the way this folder appears when you open it. When the folder is opened, click the Organize button near the top left side and select Layout. Uncheck the Navigation pane and any of the other panes you don't want to see.
Hope this helps!

Fallout 3:
I am having a crash to desktop issue after I click play on the mainscreen (with the slide show displaying the Brother's of Steel Armor).

I managed to install the game and it ran well for several days. I played a couple hour or two session and one eight hour session and had very few crashes. Then one fine day I fired up Fallout 3 and when I clicked play on the main screen ... the game window vanishes and an innocent little popup window appears and says "Fallout 3 has stopped working. The program has stopped working correctly, please close the program to continue." This was in Dec 08. I tried and tried to get the game to work again.

I tried all methods in the Beth forum and anywhere on the web that I could find. I wiped my pc and started again and updated everything carefully, painstakenly following every instruction. I had no luck. I upgraded from 2G of ram to 4G. It didn't help. I have never been able to get the game to launch again after that first week.

After being told in email by a tech at Beth that my pc wasn't to spec, even though it is over spec by Beth's posted sys requirements, I got peeved and stopped trying. I'm back and being the stubborn sob I am and a huge fan of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, I'm not going anywhere until someone gives me a real fix or a valid my PC can't handle it reason. I know my computer handled it for a week so why did it stop working? That is what has really gotten my goat... Read more

What a maddening experience

Running Win 7 64Bit Professional (retail)

even happens after a nice fresh clean install. I have seen so many threads/issues around the net about this, you'd think Microsoft would have responded.

I don't have any "additional" junk installed, and it still happens.

It's totally random, could happen 2-3 days after a reboot, or it could happen out of the blue 30 mins into a reboot.

Has anybody seen Microsoft respond about this in ANY way?

A:Right Click on desktop causing Explorer.exe crash!!!

There are many reports of this issue by a subset of users here.

I installed 64bit Win 7 Pro on my desktop and used it extensively for three days without seeing such an error. I then rebuilt the system (long story) and it has been happening non-stop since. BTW, both builds were clean installs.

The only thing that I think that I did differently on the second build is install 7zip. Given that 7zip adds a contextual menu item, I decided to uninstall it last night. The crash still happened. I then rebooted and have not seen a similar crash, but I have only used the system for a couple of hours since this uninstall/reboot.

The entire thing may be a false correlation. Only time (and input from others) will tell. That said, if it crops up again, I am going to rebuild the system...again....assuming, perhaps, it's a corrupt install.

BTW, the specific error relates to a very vague heap corruption that folks here have not been able to debug (yet).

How can I get around this problem and delete those files?

At first I thought it was just when I was right clicking to refresh but it was actually the whole Right Clicking in the desktop in itself, as long as I right click in my desktop, it happens, its okay if I right click on an Icon in the desktop or in another folder as long as its not directly in the desktop.

I also got the explorer.exe.3720.dmp in my LocalDumps.

When I turn on my computer, the desktop goes white and the taskbar goes white in 4 seconds. When I open my task manager, it crashes too. I can't do any "run" commands or anything casue my taskbar is just frozen. Is it another explorer.exe crash? I've looked for the solutions but all of them say something about opening run and typing in something or cmd typing. I can't open neither of those. I can access google chrome through steam. It shows someone's playing something, I click on it and go to their profile to open steam. I can play steam games and stuff but I can't open everything through steam...
This seems like way worse than the average desktop freezing problems I've googled about.

First note- I have ruled out malware causes for now. I've run scans with MBAM(quick plus selective specific folder scans)), SAS(quick and full) and TDSSkiller, and found nothing at all.

Second note- a reboot seems to have cleared the issue, for now. I'll monitor it though. I just want to know the cause.

Okay so... first off I had clogged the RAM some by running Firefox overnight a couple nights to play some "idle" type games. I play them a lot, and I really should stop. Second, I bought an MP3 player as a birthday gift for someone and had to load music onto it(they lack the means). It is a USB 1.1 device so file transfers were slow and it took about 2 hours to get everything on. I suspect this clogged Explorer.

This started shortly after finishing that task. I put in a micro SD card to put some files onto it, created a fresh folder and... the window opened then minimized. The taskbar showed it there but with a generic icon and clicking did nothing. I could close it by clicking the X box. Took a bit of work, removed and reseated the card but it persisted. Thinking maybe the SD card was causing it I wanted to run a test on the card- opening a local folder did the same thing PLUS I got a popup to update Javascript- legit, I believe. I ran malware scans and found nothing. Eventually proceeding it seemed that if I copied and pasted a folder name it would definitely cause this when working with the SD card, typing the name manually let me proceed. Okay, all is fine, st... Read more

This issue was solved in this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/993189-solved-libraries-folder-opens-start.html
However, I am completely clueless as to how. I found the relevant file but double-clicking it merely opened my libraries folder (again).
Step by step, what do I do?

Download to Desktop: DDS by sUBs from one of these locations:

double click DDS.scr to run

When complete, DDS.txt will open.

Hello, I am new here. I have been having problems with Windows 7 explorer constantly crashing and restarting whenever I right-click on or open any files and folders, search in the Start Menu search box, opening My Computer, Control Panel, etc. In essence, it is limiting most of the interface. I was able to pinpoint the problem using Safe Mode and msconfig to the 'Power' service (C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe ?k DcomLaunch). And once I disabled the 'Power' service, everything seems to be fixed.

However, disabling the 'Power' service will disable audio service for the system. To fix the audio service, I tried changing the Power management, reverting back to previous restore points, updating the audio device drivers, trying to enable the Windows services in services.msc for 'Remote Procedure Call (RPC)', 'Plug and Play', 'Multimedia Class Scheduler', 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder' and 'Windows Audio' to activate sound again, but 'Window Audio' depends on 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder', but 'Windows Audio Endpoint Builder' seems to depends on the 'Power' service. And I can?t activate the ?Power? service again without crashing Windows explorer. How do I go about fixing this issue? Can I replace the ?Power? service files? Or update them? And help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The title is accurate, if a little confusing. Here's what's up:
A few days ago my Libraries disappeared. The Libraries folder exists, but there was nothing in there. No Documents, no music--nothing. Right clicking and choosing "restore default libraries" had no effect--not even an error message. Trying to create a new
Library works, but when you try to rename "New Library" to "Documents" an error message comes up:

There is already a folder with the same name in this location.

Oddly enough, this behavior happened at the same time that many of my files became set to Hidden. I admit I panicked when everything was apparently gone, but a quick Show Hidden Files solved that. I can navigate to all My Music, My Documents, etc. by exploring
to my user folder.
Any ideas? I've seen this topic pop up in many different forums, and the recommended fix is always to right click and select "Restore Default Libraries." As mentioned, this has no effect on my machine.
Thanks for any help,

A:Libraries not showing up, "restore default libraries" not working, but the libraries are there.

Hi Mike,
Press WinKey + R to bring the Run dialog. Type this:
cmd /k cd /d "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries"
Press {ENTER}
Type the command DIR /A in the CMD Prompt and check if the
.library-ms files are present.
And type ATTRIB to check the attributes of those files. Copy the output and post here.

Have you installed anything recently that interfaces with explorer? Perhaps a .rar file opener, .zip software, etc.? WinRAR has caused these issues in the past; do you have that installed?

When did this problem begin?

I have done all that has been suggested so far by people online. I will tell you where I'm at.  I've used several anti-virus products, updated my video adapter drivers, and tried as many 'Fix-its' as I could get.
I finally learned you can save a lot of time and repetitive actions by running in safe mode. Particularly as far as getting my wireless adapter reconnected after accidentally deleting it.
I have def ragged, deleted, re-installed and rebooted so many times that I'm dizzy. I've removed all unnecessary programs, since I got this MSI A5000 LT from a friend, and I'll tell you it was so infected that it blue screened every time I clicked my mouse. I'm using a wireless mouse as I'm too clumsy and impatient to use the touch pad.
Sooooo....what is the problem. Microsoft doesn't seem to have a fix and by the volume of people out there with the same problem, someone must have a permanent solution. One that doesn't include buying 'the ultimate cure' software or driver helpers.
So far in the 10 days I've been aware of the problem I got it to work for 10 minutes before it stopped responding! And 'Internet Options' forget it unless I'm in safe mode.
So help me please and I will be glad to share all the neat things I've learned in the process. Things like 'hidden devices' in in Device Manager and accidentally installing Client Services where it doesn't belong and finally finding out that you  can't disable Secondary Loggon. Thanks again for being there.

Good question...I don't think that you ever really described what you see as "the problem."
In any case, let's try the following.
Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:  List last 10 Event Viewer log  List Installed Programs  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

I have two partitions in my computer.  I want to change my libraries (My Documents, Videos, Music, Downloads, etc) to D drive instead of the default C drive which has all my Windows 64 bit files on)  So next time my computer crashes, I can reformat and not lose all my files on the D drive.  So I was told to go to my bottom left windows button, go to my name and right click each of the folders and go to the Location tab and change it to D: I followed these instructions:http://www.pcworld.com/article/2079571/move-your-libraries-to-a-second-drive-or-partition.html I accidentally change the location for both "My Documents" and "My Music" to "D:/Music" so now both documents and music files are going to the My Music folder in the D drive.  Even when I change the location back, both are acting as one folder.  I tried deleting them and creating new folders under my Computer in my name.  But it tells me that "My Documents" folder already exist but I'm confused because cannot see it. Now I show 2 "My Documents" folders.  One is customize tab to "general" and the other is customize tab to "music" but both are acting as one folder.  IF I change one location, it automatically changes the other's location so Music and Documents are acting as one folder now!?!?!? I cannot even see "My Documents" on the left side of the windows explorer under Libraries.  What is going on?How do I change it back to default?

I am terminally confused by the new Win7 Libraries view, as opposed to the nice old XP Windows Explorer. Specifically, I have a folder for a current project saved on the desktop where I can get at it quickly. It contains docs, pics, subfolders, and needs some sorting. I could easily do this on XP with drag and drop in an Explorer view. But I can't get the desktop folder with its subfolders to show in the Libraries view - I am reduced to cutting and pasting into the right subfolder, which is a pain.

Is there any way of making Libraries show subfolders in a desktop folder?

A:Libraries/Desktop question

OOPS! Should have looked in the Tutorials first.... Now I have discovered the option to Expand and Collapse in the left-hand pane, all is solved. Anyway, if you have been, thanks for reading!

I don't know what I did or how, but there is now a Libraries folder on my desktop that I would like to get rid of. It can't be dragged to the Recycle Bin nor can it be deleted by any method I've found.

If I open Windows Explorer and navigate to

A:How do I get rid of a Libraries folder on my desktop

Try this,
Right click on the desk top.
Click personalize.
Change desktop icons.
See if its listen under there.

Libraries has documents, music, pictures, and videos shortcuts under is.

We have a very strange issue occurring with IE 11. This is happening domain wide on many Windows 7 desktops and is mind boggling.

We have a desktop shortcut that was pushed out via group policy preferences originally, it opens an URL in IE for ADP.

When a user first logs in, and clicks the shortcut, it opens the page in IE. IE will close automatically within a minute, every time. If we re-open the shortcut, IE shows that the last session ended unexpectedly, but the second time around it will not crash,
IE stays open for good. This only happens after first logon. this happens for all users, even administrators.

I have also confirmed it happens for any desktop shortcut that opens IE, regardless of the page it opens, including a shortcut to google.com for example.

I have enabled Internet Explorer logging in event viewer but it only shows events 1047, 1021, with no information "the description for Event ID 1047 from source Internet Explorer cannot be found". there is nothing in the application or system logs

I have tried also creating a new OU in AD, adding the computer and user to the OU, and blocked inheritance to rule group policy out of the picture, the issue still occurs. Even if I manually create a shortcut on the C:\users\username\desktop, or on public
desktop. these are local profiles, not roaming.

Also, if I log in and open IE, then navigate to any webpage, IE does not close automatically. It on... Read more

Hello friends. First post here. But it looks like a great forum, with lots of helpful people. So, so far, I really like Windows 7. I think it's fast, pretty, and all in all, well done. I have very few problems so far. And this is the only one I haven't been able to fix so far. When I open the explorer, the below pic is what I see. You'll notice I've circled the problem/s in black. I'm pretty sure there is supposed to be icons there. What do you guys think? If I check the properties, they are "not available." I noticed that if I browse to the libraries, say in Wordpad, they display correctly. I haven't a clue how to fix this. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Windows 8.1 shows folders above This PC in Windows 8.1.

Using the reg file provided in this forum, I removed all folders from showing above This PC and I selected show libraries in the navigation. Now, at the left; there are Favorites, This PC, and Libraries.

What I want is to be able to see This PC and Libraries under the same menu. Under (if not possible, above) This PC so I can see both my libraries and disks at the same time.

The reason I need this is that my user folders are not (all) my libraries.

P.S.: Simply, I want to see my Libraries instead of Folders in Explorer.

Somewhat of a minor concern but annoying nonetheless. Basically for no reason my Libraries (specifically my Music Library) on Windows 7 (RTM 7600) has began to play around. In addition to the default locations in the Music Library, I've added my music folder stored on my external hd. This is all fine, and WMP12 recognises all the music, and explorer was fine to display all the files also. My issue is that in Explorer, if I change the view from basic Folders to a rich content such as Artists or Albums, I will only be able to see the files stored in the Sample Music folder. Also if I expand the library in the Navigation pane and view only my external hd collection, if I view this alone in a rich view I get told there are no files to display.

I am concerned as it was working fine up untill about 10 minutes ago. I haven't installed or changed anything that could have made this happen (not that anything should cause this).

Any idea how I can resolve this? Or indeed what could have caused it?

A:[SOLVED] Windows 7 Libraries issue.

Right for anyone with a similar issue; I managed to sort it but I'm not entirely sure how I achieved it. I did 3 things; I rebuilt the index, and I removed the external hd music folder from the library, then re-added it. I also, as I've read somewhere that it used to help, changed the default type of the library from music to general, applied it, then reverted it back to Music. It's now back to working order. I'm puzzled as to why and how, but at least it works now.
