when running on battery, screen goes black, but laptop is still running

Q: when running on battery, screen goes black, but laptop is still running

I've got an odd problem here. On my Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX, it runs fine as long as it's plugged in. Once I unplug it and run it on the battery, once it gets down to about 87-88% or so, the screen just goes black, but doesn't shutdown and I'm unable to do anything except remove the battery and restart. My first thought was a battery problem, but the fact that it keeps running even though the screen is black makes me wonder if that's the case or not. Anyone else experience this or any ideas to help?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: when running on battery, screen goes black, but laptop is still running

You laptop is due to the power plan settings, refer to point 1.
Normally, the laptop can return to display mode upon moving the cursor &or keyboard being press.

1. Go to Control Panel, select Hardware & Sound; select Power Options.
Select the Power plan with button marked, and Change Plan settings to view on the options.

2. If you are using main power, best is to remove &or unplugged the battery.
If the battery is always plugged in, while using main power, this cause the battery to failed in the long run.
Unless you need to charge battery, then plug in the main power.
If battery is almost 100% then remove it if you use main power.
I had one laptop (from my bro) who always battery was plugged in and also use main power.
The battery was now useless, cannot hold charge.

Hello
I have a asus k53s that i recently upgrade to win8 (from w7) but now the laptop is acting a bit strange. Sometimes when i leave the laptop on but don't use it(idle), the fan will be constantly on even if its not doing anything like running a virus scan, and the screen will also shutdown going completly black. I can't move the mouse or press keys to "wake" the computer and i have to reboot the computer by pressing the power button.
I even disable some settings so the computer won't go into idle/hibernate but that didn't solve.
I have everything updated with the latest drivers, so i really don't understand the reason for this.
Anyone know what can be and how to fix it?

Thanks

A:Laptop gets black screen and the fan always running in w8

The problem might be the result of doing an upgrade install. Perhaps you could rid yourself of system corruption that may ultimately be the problem by doing an automatic repair or using sfc /scannow. Other possible solutions are more involved--doing a system refresh, system reset, or clean install. The first two require (a) a Win8 install DVD, (b) a Win8 install USB flash drive, or (c) a Win8 ISO. The last one requires (a) or (b).

I just installed W7 on my Dell Latitude D610. I have drive issues for my monitor, W7 does not recognize it and installs a generic Dell Cipset. The laptop worked great with XP and had no issues of being unplugged and losing colors. Has anyone run into this issue.

A:Laptop Screen Loses Color when running on Battery

AjBurke, Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though this notebook was supported by Dell through Windows Vista, which lessens your chances of finding Windows 7-compatible drivers. I'd recommend installing the newest available drivers from Dell in compatibility mode for Windows XP. To do this, right click on the program .exe and open the Properties menu, then navigate to the compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for..."-Alex

For two months or so now my laptop screen has occasionally been going black but still be running. Putting my computer to sleep and waking it up makes the screen show up again temporarily but if I do that immediately after a 'crash' it tends to do it again within a minute or so. It's recently been getting a lot worse - it often occurs within minutes of boot up now. I'm in the process of doing the typical troubleshooting procedures for this (booting a different OS, plugging into a different screen) but I have a very strong suspicion that the issue is with my GPU.

My CPU can run very hot, in the 75 to 80 C range. I (naively) assumed that this wouldn't affect my GPU since it generally runs at around 60C but all signs seem to point that way so far.

Occasionally when the screen goes black a white bar that stretches horizontally flickers for a bit at the top of my screen before the screen goes fully dark. Does that confirm any specific problem on my end?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Hi. I've not found an identical thread or a solution for this. I hope someone can help. I have a HP Probook G1. Details in screenshot below. I want to install additional memory and bought the following: SAMSUNG 8GB 204 pin DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM (1600Mhz, PC3L-12800S, CL11, 1.35V Low Power for Notebook) When I install the memory, the laptop no longer boots up. After pressing the on/off button, I just get a black screen, the capslock and numlock LEDs blink and the cooler fan runs at high revs. Nothing else happens. I've tried installing only the new memory and installing it in the second memory card slot with the original memory still in place. In both cases the laptop fails to start. I've tried doing a complete system reset (battery removed, start on power only) etc. but to no avail. Please help! The laptop is unbelievably slow with only 4GB memory. :-(

Hello there,

I've got an old Compaq Armada E500 laptop which im meant to be upgrading for a friend. Im usually quite good with computers so I went ahead and used my Hirens boot cd to wipe the hard drive clean with DBAN, upon completing this, i used the hirens cd again to format the harddrive to fat32. Now when i put my xp install cd in the drive and boot up I just get a blank black screen with a flashing white underscore in the top left corner, I can't do anything.

How on earth am I meant to load xp on here when it isn't loading the cd?

I've accessed the bios using f10 and changed the boot order to CD, it will load the hirens disc, but when I insert the XP disc it will say something about a pxe - media error check cable and will proceed through to this blank screen....

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

A:Old laptop running windows 98 wiped for xp replacement, black screen now.

Hi,
That sounds as if the XP disk is not bootable.
You have verified by booting off of a different CD that the drive is working.

The PXE error is what you see when the network card is in the boot device list and none of the items in the list above it are bootable.
BTW Hirens is not allowed to be recommended here due to the inclusion of Microsoft files.

Good Luck
Roger

I don't see any reason why you can't run it on mains power forever, although if the battery is known to be no good I would take it out.

I did this on my old Fujitsu Seimens laptop when the battery failed and it ran for ages without a problem, as long as it was plugged in

A:Laptop running slow on battery

Hello Bindoksala,

Your temperatures are pretty high. I would recommend to increase air flow and blow out the dust to help cool the temps some.

If your laptop gets to hot, your CPU's and motherboard's performance could get idled down by your BIOS to help prevent a meltdown, or the laptop could even get powered off.

Since your laptop is only doing this while on battery, you might check your advanced power plan settings to see what you have set while "On battery", and adjust as needed. Specifically, check your "Processor power management" settings for this.

Power Plan Settings - Change

Hope this helps,

I have a Toshiba P25-S509 laptop that's a few years old but still runs pretty good. The problem that I having now is that it seems to only run on battery even if the AC adapter is plugged in. This is one of those 10lb giant laptops that was marketed as a desk top replacement. That was a joke and I fell for it.
I get about 50 minutes of run time and have to be religious about recharging. I purchased another adapter/charger and a new battery and the problem still exists. Strangely enough however, once in a while I'll see the charging light come on while it's running and i will think that my problem is solved but it doesn't last for long. If any one has any advice on how to fix this situation I would appreciate it. I may have to get a new laptop and I can assure you that it will not be a Toshiba. I would also appreciate any recommendations on a good reliable brand.

Thx in advance,

VC

I have a Dell D400 laptop, bought used about a year ago with two batteries - both of them Lithium Ion 9T119. I run the laptop on mains more than on battery. The batteries used to run for over two hours, but now they only last 30-45 minutes. Is there a way I can find out whether they have come to the end of their life and need replacing, or whether something is wrong with the laptop that is making them drain quickly? The fact that both lost started running low quickly at around the same time makes me wonder if it's the batteries or something else.

If the answer is that I need to replace them, are cheaper generic batteries (off eBay) good value, or should I stick with paying Dell's prices?

Thanks.

A:Laptop battery running out quickly

From the description, I'd suspect the batteries. It's not good to leave the batteries in if you run all the time on A/C power, the higher temperature will shorten the life of the battery.

I'd try one of the generic models and see how it works, cheaper than buying the Dell one.

About 4 months ago I performed a number of upgrades to my 4 year old Lenovo SL400 laptop.

I upgraded to a Seagate Momentus hybrid drive, upgraded my CPU, installed new RAM, purchased a new 9-cell battery and performed a clean intstall of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (the computer came with Vista - Windows 7 was a retail upgrade).

I had several BSOD crashes which only happened when running on battery power. I was sure the battery was the culprit and RMA'd to the vendor for a replacement. I still have the issue with the replacement.

I notice a screen flicker a second or two before the crash. About half the time the computer recovers without crashing.

I've attached the dump files and system health report.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

if i running my laptop on battery, does it matter how many applications i run at the same time

ie one application more battery time

4 or more application less battery time

A:if more applications running, what will be effect on laptop battery

Generally speaking a computer does work and uses battery. The more work, the more battery it uses. If your CPU is set to performance it will use more battery, set to power saver less (both on laptops).

So yes more work, less battery life.

I've had this laptop for several weeks and each time I unplug the power cable to use it running off the battery, the wifi connection drops. The timing of when it drops is variable, but this happens consistently. I know from my other devices there is no issue with my Wifi service itself - my other devices remain connected at all times. The laptop will show as either no internet connections available at all (again, not true as my other devices confirm there are), or, my own Wifi is showing on the laptop, but as unavailable. This never happens when the laptop power cable is plugged in. I only ever unplug when there's sufficient power - usually from 100% battery. Please can someone advise?

The other day I noticed that I had a red x on my task bar. I did everything possible to remove this without touching anything too critical. I finally googled it to find the best way to get rid of this RED X (which was xp antispyware 2009). I removed from the task manager all the items that shouldn't've been there, based on what this one website told me.

In addition, I went into REGEDIT and removed the items as well to guarantee that it would not be back. To make a long story short I cleaned the computer and I saw that the steps were working. I went to run one step virus remover--advised by microsoft techs and it froze while in process. It took so long my computer automatically shut down.

I pressed the power button to start it back up. My computer acted as though it is going to fully load, but it gets all the way to the windows xp screen (the screen before you select the users) and loads completely. But it never goes to the select user screen. It goes to the gray screen and than 2 seconds later the screen turns black. I here the fans running but NO SCREEN.

When I try to boot the computer in safe mode nothing happens.
When I try to boot it in safe mode with networking...nothing.
When I try to boot it in safe mode with command box...I get message "Windows Logon Process System terminated unexpectedly with status of 0xc0000034(0x00000000)"

This issue has been going on for quite some time now. My screen randomly goes black, usually while I'm playing games or using the browser. It used to be just when I was using any browser, but its developed onto when I play certain games. This has ruined some progress on papers I've written (several hours lost can be quite annoying), so I decided to put all the info here to see if I could get any help on the situation. The computer is still running fine whilst the screen is black, I can even keep skype calls going and hear people talking while not seeing a thing. The only way to get the screen to come back is to force shut it off. I've also plugged in an external monitor to test if its a hardware issue or an in system issue. Both screens crash indicating that its simply a system error.
My specs:
Dell precision M6500
Windows 7, updated to windows 10, its happened on both versions
Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M, up to date
Intel Core i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53 GHz
8Gb Ram
64-bit

A:Screen going black but still running

Hi,
I too have had this problem the Dell Precision M6500 and Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M with up to date drivers from the Nvidia site. It affected my machine before and after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I noticed it never did it on battery power. When on mains power the graphics card seems to shut down as it thinks it is overheating but it is not.
The solution is to download the Nvidia PowerMizer manager software from software.informer.com
Check enable PowerMizer
Check fixed performance level select medium for both battery and mains.
Check Overheat slow down override. Select  disable overheat slowdown.
That's it. :o)
The only thing is every times Windows 10 updates (like this morning) the PowerMizer settings are stripped out of the registry. This morning my machine was blacking out as soon as I opened any program so I had to pull out the mains lead to get it running so I could start PowerMizer again. I have left a short cut to the program on my desk top.
There is a separate issue with the Precision M6500 really overheating due to dust in the main and graphics chip heatsinks. See here for my cure:
seakayakphoto.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/dell-precision-m6500-workstation.html
I hope this works for others.

Not sure if I'm in the right forum? I bought a new 12 cell battery for a Compaq Presario CQ56. It has done well for several months. Not sure if related but after installing a couple of new programs (Freemake and a picture editing software), my battery now doesn't last as long (dropped about 40-50%), seems to run hotter(needs to have the internal fan on most of the time) and more interestingly runs down from a full charge over 12-24 hours with the laptop turned off (I select shut down as opposed to sleep or hibernate) I have uninstalled those programs but problem persists. Battery does not run down when separated from the laptop for the same time period. Not sure if battery or laptop or something else.

Advice would be great thanks.

I was playing League of Legends one day, when my fps started to drop.
Over time, it got worse and worse, and I noticed my battery was low. Turned out, the charger fell out while I was moving my computer. So I plugged the charger in, fixed some problems with "plugged in, not charging", and continued to play. Battery was at 40%, and my fps in game still hovered about 2-20(I consider this bad, normally running at 144 fps), and decided to reboot my computer. After rebooting, I tested out my fps again, and it was at 2-12 fps this time. I finally decided to check my cpu usage, and it was hovering around 100% the whole time. I did a CCleaner registry clean, a MalwareBytes scan and clean, a CCleaner space clear, and the problem is still not fixed. Normally I am able to run League as well as many other programs at the same time without lag,I don't know why my computer suddenly started acting so slow, maybe it was because of the battery being low. Still, last time my battery was low my computer was just as fast, so I have no clue what happened. Also, its not just League that lags, Youtube and Twitch have spikes very frequently aswell. My computer also is slow, my browser freezes alot too.
You can find my specs in the images below (I have windows 7, I just decided to use an XP look to make my computer run a little faster)
Thanks

I have had terrible problems with my computer recently, it freezed when I was on the internet or in a game and I had to force the computer to be restarted with the power button.

I have just fixed the problem with using an older driver for my video card.

But after I fixed the problem I got a new problem directly, now when playing games the screen goes black but the computer is still running.
When it goes black, my computer gives me this sound when it checks for a CD inside the CD-Drive and then it just stays black and I have to restart it with the power button.

I will soon take my computer to my computer support and get it troubleshooted, but is there anything I can do myself before I disconnect all cables and brings it to the repair dude?

Thanks

I just recently started having errors with my custom built PC from ~2013, I used to be running windows 7 on it, and I noticed these errors a week or two ago when I started playing a video game (rocket league) after a long break. It was working totally fine for a while, and then suddenly started giving BSODs when using a 360 controller on rocket league (but oddly not the mouse) -- the controller worked before, though I just started using a new usb wifi device. That thread is HERE, for those curious.

I figured I was overdue to update to Windows 10, and I have, and I'm a big fan. I reinstalled from scratch from a USB device, and then started getting all the updates and so on. However, after downloading steam and rocket league (before installing the windows updates, if that mattered), before I ever plugged in the controller or installed its drivers I got a BSOD. It's been giving me BSODs randomly ever since - though I can guarantee one by playing rocket league - even after updating everything in windows. Furthermore, sometimes after a BSOD the computer won't start up properly.. it will begin to start up, but the display will never get to the ASUS splash screen. I can remedy this by (rapidly) plugging in a USB device during the boot, and sometimes that gets it to a 'stable' state, during which if I don't play rocket league I probably won't get any BSODs. One extra bit of info: I didn't yet activate windows 10 with my windows 7 CD key, not that I suspect it matters.

I was trying to update my laptop to Windows 10 and when it was finding updates, my laptop prompted me to restart my laptop for an update so I thought maybe restarting it was the updates that would finalize the upgrade. So I restarted my laptop and all the graphics turned pink/purple and all distorted and it was really hard to see anything in general. The resolution was fixed from 1600x900 to 640x480 so it made everything a lot smaller as well while having discoloration. I went into dxdiag and a display adapter wasn't detected. I even tried to hook up a dvi and hdmi cable to see if it was just the laptop but it reflected on my monitor as well. Then it got worse. I ran across a suggestion to run chkdsk and the scan mentioned over 300,000 errors so I scheduled a fix for the next restart and restarted immediately to see if that would fix my distorted graphics. When chkdsk was presumably over, my laptop restarted and it boots to nothing but a black screen; no Windows logo, no "press esc to enter startup menu", nothing. The wireless button where F12 is located is a solid orange, no blinking light. The light for caps lock is solid white with no blinking as well. When the battery is in the laptop, it's blinking orange steadily but I know that's because the battery is really old and it can't really hold any charge anymore. With the battery off, it's a solid white, no blinking. I assume the hard drive is still working since upon startup it makes the clicking no... Read more

Hello,I turned off my computer and when I turned it back on the computer is working (I can hear it) but, the screen is black. The cap lock key is flashing. How can I fix this without clearing the memory on the computer? I got it only 10 months ago.

A:Black screen, computer still running

Hi, The fact that the caps lock led is blinking may indicate that this is a hardware issue, but you could try the following. Shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery ( assuming your Model has a removable battery ).  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ) and see if the notebook will start correctly. If it doesn't and as you mention your notebook is only 10 months old, it should still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange for it to be repaired - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

I have a HP G62 running windows 7 when booted up the screen will not come on. Tried the battery and power cord thing and holding down on the power button nothing works. The caps lock light is continuously blinking, leave it on for a while the screen will come on. The screen stays on all while the computer is on , but if you happen to put it to sleep or turn it off and boot it back up the screen will not come on again. I have changed the memory around still nothing. If anyone can solve the problem or has a solution any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dear readers,

as the title states, my laptop randomly shut down twice so far when the battery was inside, but the AC power cable was in the computer. The battery icon bottom left indicated that it was 100% charged, running on AC power on High Performance and when I was in a game it randomly went off. Rebooted quicker than usual, skipping some of the startup processes it usually does when I manually turn it off.

The first time it did this the battery was very hot, even though it was running on AC. This time it is not, it is barely warm.

Another thing to mention is that both times, after being back in desktop, the battery would be "0% available (plugged in, charging)", but it would not charge, it stays at 0% until I remove it and put it back in.

I am having a problem while playing games as well, which we are discussing in another thread here:
http://forums.techguy.org/games/863611-significant-fps-drops.html

And here is my original thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/games/863947-large-fps-performance-drop-stuttering.html#post6949452

Hope someone has some insight on the matter.

Kindest regards,
Vadim Zinkovski

Hi,
Some batteries can't take the electricity constantly flowing threw them i suggest you take the battery out when you plug it in the wall and put it in when your on the go. You battery does work still when you unplugg it from the wall right? And im guessing when your battery starts to fail it switches to "power saver" mode instead of "high performance" mode.
so take out the battery and plug it into the wall, store the battery until well until you need it. Hope this helps.
Also could be the result of a faulty battery..How long have you had your laptop?

Hello, Tech Guy forums

So my laptop, which I got last December, freezes when running games (WoW, Champions Online, Aion are a few examples) on anything but power saver. Both Balanced and High Performance cause me to crash anywhere from 5-30 minutes after loading it up.

What happens is: I'll usually be doing some questing or whatnot and out of the blue for no known reason the entire computer just freezes. The sound cuts off, I'm unable to move the mouse. It stays this way unless I hold the power button to turn it off.

This problem is nonexistent when my laptop is set to Power Saver, which poses a problem as it causes low framerate when playing.

If anyone has any suggestions/questions/answers I'd love to hear em' ^^

My brother downloaded a virus to this computer. It caused the screen after you logged in to be black, and when you use taskmanager, you find explorer.exe is not running. You can get it running again, but it's not a solution.

I ran a boot scan with Avast and this is what I found and removed.

Win32:IRCBot-DVQ
INF:[email protected]
Win32:Renos-AWK
Win32: Dropper-gen
Win32:Malware-gen

All items were located in some type of temporary or Roaming folders, with the exception of INF:[email protected], which ran in a drive that doesn't exist.

I also used cmd to run this code "sfc /scannow" the result was "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Attached is a HijackThis of after I got explorer.exe running again, as well as the RootKit scan and the other scan that is requested by this forum.

Look forward to getting some help and working to solve this issue
