Account Sign-In Hidden from Sign-in Menu/Start Menu

Q: Account Sign-In Hidden from Sign-in Menu/Start Menu

My younger brother and I share a computer. It is Windows 10 Pro. I was letting him use it while i was asleep. All I know is that he was playing his video games. Anyways, he left the house to go hang out somewhere and i wake up to see that when i turn on the computer, only his account shows at the sign-in screen. Meanwhile, there are THREE accounts on this computer. My account, His account, and a local that my other siblings use sometimes. I restarted and even shut down my computer about 4 times. I waited until he came back and logged on his account to check what was wrong, and I see that my account is still there with all my files and docs. The other local account is there too. I log out to see if my User name is there but it isn't. I tried to see if my account was deactivated using these methods but none of them worked. I've looked on Microsoft's forums but all I found was how to activate the built-in administrator account. Please do your best to help!! I have important work to do on my account but i can't access it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just upgraded to Windows10 4 days ago and got this on screen last night and until now. What will I do? PLEASE SEE PHOTO.

A:Critical Error: Start menu and Cortana aren't working.....Sign out now"

Just some of additional details I can remember after Windows 10 Upgrade.
It looks so good at first, the environment...so cool... Until after 1 day,
1) I cannot play my music using "Windows Media Player"
2) I cannot "PRINT". Printer in my devices was gone. I re-installed it (Brother DCP-J100). And then it appeared in the devices as two copies: One with "Copy(1)" at the end. I tried to print, I cannot print. All were in "queued" all the time.
3) I transferred photos from my mobile phone to laptop via Bluetooth, all were "NOT SENT". I found out: I need to right click on the Bluetooth icon and then press "Receive a file". Ops, before this it is automatic.....
4) My greatest DISASTER: Above-mentioned: CRITICAL ERROR: Start menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in. Sign out now. Seemed like I don't have another choice but to sign out. But I have signed in and out already more than 10 times, when will it be fixed??? I cannot use my laptop well. Just to reach you out here in forum am using my mobile phone to take photo of the screen and patiently typing....I tried to click my "Mozilla browser in the Desktop" it doesn't function. I's forced to use "IE" instead and I don't like it and my time is limited coz anytime now while typing it can crushed....

The sub-menu of "Shut down or Sign out" has several options, two of which are "Update and shut down" and "Update and restart".

From what I can recall, prior to the Anniversary Update, these options only used to appear if there was an Update to be installed. Now they seem to be a permanent part of the sub-menu even if there is no Update to be installed.

Is this the way it is supposed to work or is this a bug in the sub-menu?

Good morning. I've been struggling with the annoying issue of not being able to switch back to using a PIN to log in, and found a guide that said it would reset the PIN option if I cancelled in the middle of creating a new PIN. I did so, and when I went into the settings to create the PIN (which had indeed been reset), I got an error message. Thinking all I needed was a reset, I restarted the computer. However, now the Sign-In Options menu won't load (the little dots just slide across the screen).

My suspicion is that I corrupted that section of my user profile, but I don't really know how to fix it without doing a full clean install.

Hi All,

Could someone please provide some ideas.

We have just upgraded a bunch of users to windows10. And we need to sign out/log off/lock screen from time to time. But this is not obvious in the default desktop layout and these options not available in the power menu. I would like to add the sign out/log off/lock screen options in the power menu and is this possible to add in the layout as well ? And since we have a large number of users I'm thinking of using the Group Policy to do a mass deployment. I'm using Windows Server2012R2

I've been searching through the settings and policies and in the Group Policy tried enabling the "Add Logoff to the Start Menu" policy setting but that doesn't work. Tried anyway although it doesn't seem to support Windows10. Tried to do the same using the Local Policy Editor on my pc also didn't work.

Please let me know how to add sign out/log off/lock screen to all users pc on their powermenu/layout using Group Policy in the Windows Server2012. Much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I Just had a log in error. I have a Dell Precision 7710 mobile work station with the Anniversary Update. I turned on the machine and tried to log in and got:

We can't sign into your account
This problem can often be fixed by signing out of your account, then signing back in. If you don't sign out now, any files that you create or changes that you make will be lost.

Logging out and restarting did not work. I shut it down, undocked (it is a Thunderbolt Cable Dock), and then restarted. Luckily it was back to normal log in. I shut down docked, and booted and it was normal log in again.
Not sure what happened. Hope the issue does not come back.

I read online this happened to others, but cannot find a cause or fix (other than restarting) and wondering if anyone knows why this happened.

First post - Friend asked me to help with his computer. Said he clicked a link on an email from the USPS and ever since it's been unusable. What I found is many of the personal folders have been hidden, the desktop gone, many processes in the registry point to files and folders that don't exist, and the start menu is gone - at least until I changed it to classic view, and then it's limited. I "unhid" the files, manipulated the registry as much as I knew would be safe, and all I have left (as far as I can tell) is to bring back the start menu. System restore was on, but there were no saved restore points, which I thought was odd, and wondered if they were just "hidden" also, but I couldn't find anything.

I have scanned the computer with Avast, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntispyware, and also used iKill. No spyware or viruses found. This one has me stumped.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

A:Start menu wonky plus hidden files

Note: Upon another reboot, Windows Defender stopped a startup program 4da2fffe0001b25d.exe which happens to be the name of a file that the registry is trying to reference in the local machine part of the registry... \WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Load\....Daryl\...temp\4da2fffe0001b25d.exe

Well, the file or program does not exist on a search of the hard drive.

Could I solve my problems by using a Win7 disc to repair Vista? I'm told that may work, but I'm skeptical. The owner of the computer does not have the install discs (of course).

I found myself with a virus last week and downloaded malwarebytes which appears to have successfully removed Trojan.FakeMS and Trojan.Agent, or so it appears. My files were still hidden so after a bit of looking around on this site, I was able to download the unhide.exe file, run it and obtained most of my icons and such. BUT, under my start menu only two items are in the quick list (which I'm not too concerned about) but under "All Files" the folders for all my programs are there but they say they're empty.

From my research it looks like a fairly common problem that I can fix but I wanted to make sure I didn't have any extenuating cicrumstances. Is there a way to obtain help without posting all the logs or posting them privately? I'm not sure what kind of data they contain but I'm not comfortable posting data I am unfamiliar with to the internet for all to see. Please forgive me if this is a silly concern.

Thanks for your help!

In some instances I was able to just show all hidden files and folders so I could see the hidden files. I only see the desktop clearly and the icons for brief seconds upon start-up, but then immediately the start menu covers (or shades) the entire desktop and hides the icons. I've tried tried clicking the start menu icon and right-clicking the start menu icon and clicking "Desktop" (which does nothing). There's no icon to minimize the start menu in the top right corner, the "tiles" are constantly showing even after I removed them all. That ended up turning it into just a blank shade still covering the desktop. I'm still able to access all the desktop icons and programs by clicking the small double arrows to the right of the "Desktop" along the menu bar to the right, as well as by opening the "All Apps" in the start menu. I'm at a loss. I recently had an IT guy "fix" my laptop, but instead he only fixed the constant airplane mode and he did nothing about this issue. Which is hard to miss; I feel like it makes it difficult to navigate the computer with the start menu constantly up. Also, I'm not sure if it's connected, but the brightness setting will not remain at the level I change it to (which is usually the brightest setting), even while plugged in. It lowers back to about just below the middle setting seconds after I've adjusted it both with keyboard shortcuts and with manually adjusting it in the Settings folder. A little over a week ago my computer contracted a virus and by the time Malwarebytes had finished scanning and finding/removing 7 or 8 infected files, nearly all the icons on the desktop were gone and the start menu simply showed "empty".

I rebooted in safe mode and while looking around noticed that the files were all still on my computer but hidden. I brought my laptop into my mom's office and her IT guy worked on it. He said it had "infected the master boot record" which he cleaned, and reinstalled Vipre to the computer.

However, when I brought the computer home and turned it on the items were practically still empty in the start menu, and a scan uncovered another trojan virus. I assume this was related to the earlier issues.

I looked for some fixes via google on getting the start menu back in order but nothing seemed to work, and I noticed some of the programs, like Paint for example, don't seem to be accessible at all, even via My Computer. And then earlier this morning when I was browsing these forums before work it seemed like everybody was combofixing . . . so I ran that . . . I don't believe it did anything positive or negative but info. that should be mentioned.

Would greatly appreciate any advice on how to proceed, thank you so much.

You have recently removed one or more virusus from this computer, but now a new one has appeared.

First, AOL is extremely slow to start when I click on the icon. Once I've signed on, after a time a new sign-on screen appears on top of what I'm doing. I cancel that one. Soon I see activity at the bottom of the screen (where ordinarily you see "Done" or "//http:/..." etc. The virus is doing its own AOL activity! Soon afterward AOL is canceled, as if I had canceled it.

Also, Microsoft XP suddenly announces they are having to increase my virtual memory. Paging size is currently at 384 Mb, and my RAM is 1.25 GB. This is happening more and more frequently.

I have again changed my AOL sign-on password, and I no longer permit it to use the password automatically (I have to enter it at each sign on).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

After having done the update, I'm having two issues that are bugging me:

1. I cannot change the lock screen from the "cave by the shore" default nor bypass it (Brink is working on the bypass issue I believe)

2. If I go into netplwiz and uncheck the need for a password, the "Welcome" screen has the system default user picture, that drawing of a circle over an arch, not the picture I assigned to the account. With the need for a password, the picture on both the sign-in screen and "Welcome" screen is correct tho.

The lock screen issue I can live with since I normally don't use a password, but the default user picture is bugging me. I went into %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures and replaced all the default pictures with ones the same name and size of the picture that I have for the account, but it still shows the default.

I've searched around for another place where the default picture is, but cannot find any, even with the search including hidden system files.

Anybody know where the system default user pictures are stored, other than in the User Account Pictures?

I am writing on behalf of my friend b/c I already have an account here. A couple of days ago she was on her laptop when numerous pop ups started filling up her screen, the kind that makes one think "virus". The pop ups looked like system messages about some critical error with some hardware component, she can't remember. So I suggested that she go into Safe Mode and run her Avast and SuperAntiSpyware scanners to see what they pick up. Avast found one infected file, a music file that she deleted afterwards, and SAS found 34 items, mostly cookies and 4 trojans. She deleted/quarantined those afterwards too. Oddly, no log file was created by SAS after that scan like it usually does so I can't list the items they found. Also, SAS always fails when updating definitions now.
When she booted up normally, her computer was in a depressing state after the attack. The desktop was empty and unresponsive, i.e., you couldn't right-click, the Recycle Bin was gone. I tried to add icons back on but nothing appears. You can change the wallpaper and that's it. The start menu was bare too, everything had to be manually restored like the links to Control Panel, Run, etc., and all the shortcuts in the All Programs menu. However, I can't restore the Accessories folder with all it's system tools (System Restore!!!) and stuff. The Task Manager was disabled but I fixed that after looking for a solution online. Dear Bleeping Computer Community,

I gave in.

After days of following instructions from past posts and problems, I've finally decided to throw in the towel and make an account to post my issue.

I have gotten closer to a solution thanks to your amazing forum and contributors, but no matter what the 'multiple iexplorer.exe processes' veers its ugly head.

Some quick info (point form):

-Got a major virus(es) probably from infected websites
-Virus HID all my files and folders (and made my start menu empty with dead shortcuts)
-It would run multiple iexplorer.exe processes and PLAY BACKGROUND MUSIC and ADS
-I used the unhide.exe utility. That worked great. Now files are unhidden
-I stupidly deleted my temps so I don't know if I will ever be able to have my Start Menu working
-I did some scans using malware bytes, emsisosft anti-malware, and SUPER anti-spyware
-detected a bunch of spyware, etc.

SO things are looking better... EXCEPT:

1) iexplorer.exe processes are STILL running in the background
2) once in a while my ESET firewall will get a massive flood of attempts to hijack or install things.
2) most of my programs in my start menu show up as empty (I understand i made a mistake removing the temps, this is really a last issue. The main one is just to have a clean system again!)

Please note that I run Windows XP Professional 64 bit so DDS and GMERlog do not work (DDS doesn't work with XP 64 bit, GMER doesn't work with any 64 bit).

Also when I right click on a program and try to "pin to start menu", there is no option for that, only the shortcut option.

What's up with these things?

Anyone feel like helping a XP Pro Novice out here?

Thanks in advance forn your help!

A:XP Pro question Path to C: on start menu & pinning programs to start menu. XP Pro

Right-click the taskbar and look through the Properties. There are some settings in there under the Customize rubric that may help you make changes.

Start menu programs gone, Icons, files and folders hidden, random audio, IE redirect
Last night, I was surfing the net. Suddenly audio started playing on my speakers, and desktop icons started disappearing. I hit control+alt+delete, and it said task manager has been disabled by the administrator, which, or course is me to begin with. I ran a scan with microsoft security essentials antivirus, it found nothing. I scanned with malwarebytes, it found a couple things. My program files in the start menu are GONE. Come to find out, that in my documents, files were simply hidden....but random audio continues to play, and whenever I use google, i get redirected. Here is the DDS log I am to post. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Then I got a notice like "your IDE/SATA drive has failed....." i hit control+alt+delete, and it said task manager has been disabled by the administrator, which, or course is me to begin with. I ran a scan with symantec antivirus pro, it found nothing. I scanned with malwarebytes, it found a couple things. I installed spyware search & destroy, and it found like 20 things. My program files in the start menu are GONE. Come to find out, that in my documents, files were simply hidden....but random audio continues to play, and whenever I use google, i get redirected to some site in france. Also, I ran the tools as instructed in the spyware first steps page, and I cannot find this windows zip program I am told to use. I have winRAR, but it says not to use it. I right clicked, and I do not have the option to compress, like your illustration shows. Maybe I can get the files to you another way. But then again. according to my start menu, I have no programs installed either. So I dont know. Here is the DDS log I am to post. Thank you for any help you can provide. Is it possible to increase the size of the User Account picture that displays on the top right side of the Start Menu in Windows Vista Home Premium? It's larger at the windows login screen but tiny in the start menu. Am I hoping for too much?

A:Resizing User Account Picture in Start Menu

Hello Bang, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Sorry, but that cannot be changed in Vista unless some 3rd party skinning program has that option.

Hey everyone

Every now and then my Windows 8.1 x64 shows the first sign-in sequence after a restart. I noticed it most recently happened after a normal Start->Power Options->Restart. I'm quite sure it has also happened after right clicking on start button (Control-X) and restarting from there, as well as from a custom shortcut I have for restart (shutdown.exe /r /t 00).

I had just finished installing IBM SPSS 22 for a class I'm taking, but I think this is unrelated.
It goes through the whole "Setting Up Your PC" and "Installing your apps" screens even though its perfectly fine and and all my data including app data is still there. See the attached file for an example of what was most noticeably shown.

With another incident, something similar to this happened but it actually reset some of my settings for things like MediaMonkey, Connectify Hotspot, GOM Player and VLC player. It was like they had been started for the first time ever with no license information or preferences like Always on Top.

Its not a matter of urgency but I keep worrying that one day it will actually mess with my system in a very annoying way.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

So I just reinstalled Windows 10 on my machine.

Before I had it set up so that I could log in with a password or fingerprint.

Now it seems my only options are (1) password only OR (2) password, PIN or fingerprint.

I don't want PIN as a sign in option. But I have to enable PIN via "Windows Hello" before enabling Fingerprint sign in.

And once I have fingerprint sign in enabled, if I remove the PIN I lose both PIN and fingerprint sign in options.

Any ideas how I can set up password and fingerprint as my only two sign in options?

Hi, I'd like to add a context menu entry to the default set
Open/Open all users/Explore/Explore All users/Sort by Name/Rename etc
which appear when you

right click on a folder in an expanded Start menu (after 'Programs).

Technically, the 'folder' is a 'file folder'.

But the normal set of file folder context menu entries is suppressed by Windows in this instance.

Thus normal additions to the context menu set associated with 'anything' or 'file folders' or 'directories' never affects this set (so far).

I can add context menu entries which appear when I right click on a shortcut, but NOT folders.

I've tried Fast Explorer, and a couple of other utilities.

'Sort By Name', 'Explore All Users' are not in the registry. (Normally context menu entries appear in one of about 6 locations).

Ideas welcome!

Background: I want to do this 'cos I want to keep a 'bad' context menu entry that stops explorer running from this context menu (some programs do that, alas, thus you can't right click, explore the start menu once you install them and their context menu). Normally I have disabled such entries using Shellex View.

So I want to add one which uses a different file manager.

I wondered if anyone out there has had a similar experience to me...

For some weeks now I have had problems where the START MENU wouldn't launch, metro apps (OneDrive, Tweetium, Money, News etc) would fail to launch (just a blank window up), right mouse clicks wouldn't work, internet browsing slowed up...
Signing out of my windows account then back in again solved it... FOR A WHILE. After an hour or two gradually (one app after another etc) the same problems would occur.
Researching this, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was corrupt (or at least my user profile was) and a re-install was necessary. OR I also read of compatibility problems with Windows 10 in my AV software (Kaspersky Internet Security and wondered if the problem lay there.
Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky and relied on Win Defender. For 2 days now (unprecedented recently) my laptop has behaved impeccably, no problems as above.
So, am I to blame Kaspersky? Am I safe with Just Win Def? Any other AV suites throwing up problems? Any Kaspersky users with any experiences to share?

A couple of weeks ago (well maybe 10 days ago) I turned on my computer to see that the desktop was nothing but the photograph background I usually see. My icons were gone! Taskbar, Start Menu, too.

I tried CTRL-ESC. Didn't work. I tried to run explorer.exe. Didn't work. I can't even access Control Panel (control.exe). I don't have malware or a virus (though I did just do a big clean, but only the speed of my computer improved; I still have to run all my programs through Task Manager), but I think the damage was probably done by a virus or trojan.

I've tried the Fix on Kelly's Korner. I've tried looking at Microcoft's page for help, but I can't find anything. I even tried copying the explorer.exe file from my machine at work and putting it in place of the other explorer file (I kept the original, though renamed it). Nothing has worked. I'm fed up and don't want to have to do a clean install. Can someone help me?

I have created and pinned some personal folders to the start menu. They now appear on the left hand side of the start menu, along with the other applications.

Here are my questions:

1) How can I set up those folders so that they would appear with the little arrow on the right that will allow me to see the content of those folders as a menu, instead of having to open them as Explorer windows?
I would like to do that instead of using the "pull up" option in the taskbar.

1a)How can I change the name of a folder pinned to the start menu without changing the name of the real folder?

2) Is it possible to create personal folders to insert on the right hand side pane of the start menu? (to appear under the system default folders called "pictures", "music" etc)

Thank you for any advice on this.

A:menu view of personal folders pinned to start menu

1.) You should be able to right click the folder and select "view as link" or "view as menu"

1a) Not sure if you can do that.

2) It is not possible to include personal folders on the right side of the start menu.

I guess this is best explained with images, so here's what I want. (If possible of course).

So in this screenshot you can see my Start Menu, notice that some of this icons (Steam, Curse Client and Origin) have an arrow next to them? When you hover, or click, with the mouse the Task menu opens up.
What I want is to add an icon of Microsoft Office and make it so that the arrow is there too (just like Steam, Origin and Curse Client) and make it so that when I click or hover the Task menu will appear, and on the list will be MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, etc
I would like to know if it's at all possible and if so how can I do it?

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe it would be possible using a toolbar on the taskbar though,

I upgraded from Windows XP to 7. I have "menu command" and "menu pop-up" sound effects set but they are not working for the Windows 7 start menu. They used to work for XP. It was helpful to hear a sound effect whenever a menu expanded or item was pressed in the start menu. I know this may be a minor problem, but can this be fixed in a future patch or service pack?

You should be able to go into your windows sound menu and set the sounds...

I have lost some items from my start menu or the one that pops up when you hit 'start' at bottom left of screen.
I have lost the menu item 'recent documents, and have lost the drop-down menus from both the items, 'My Documents' and 'Control panel'. The 'recent documents' also had a drop down menu.
The drop down menu used to appear where the arrow is, in the picture I have included with this post and also to the right of the menu item 'control panel'

I only have very basic knowledge of computers and have tried a few easy suggestions without success.
