Dell Optiplex 320 with Intel Core2 Quad Q6600/Q6700

Q: Dell Optiplex 320 with Intel Core2 Quad Q6600/Q6700

I am calling out to anyone that has attempted this upgrade. The rest of you who just run my information into stock specification and compatibility listings, stay away. Again, don't tell me it can't be done unless you've TRIED it.
I have an Optoplex 320. It has a ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 Professional chipset, and an LGA 775 Socket. I am running the latest BIOS 1.1.12. My current CPU is an Core2 Duo E6550, and yes it's supported and fully functional. If you believe it's not, once again, leave this post.
According to Wikipedia, the Q6600 and Q6700 should now work for this particular machine. Several others users have also reported it working, but I can not get a hold of any of them and details given were unfortunately vague. Upon installing I get a solid amber light, no boot, and fans on full throttle. Swapping the CPU's out returns the machine to functionality.
The Q6600 is guaranteed to work (in general), and was tested prior according to the seller.
And again, the system boots fine with my E6550 CPU. No motherboard problem.
Would a BIOS reset help? Or is there a newer (be it official or custom) BIOS? Or maybe, the 305W PSU (Now 11 years) has degraded to the point where it can't supply enough power to the quad core to boot?
No, I'm not interested in buying a different motherboard or machine.
Thank you for your time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Are you kidding? Always do a hard BIOS reset when installing a new CPU!
I hacked an Inspiron 545 motherboard with Xeon microcodes and my multiplier was locked at 6 (instead of 6-9) because I didn't reset the BIOS.

I am interested in buying a quad core from intel. I am stuck between the q9300 and the q8200 but there is also the q6600 . Anyone knows how these three cpu perform? I know that the q9300 would be better except taht it cost around 300, the q8200 could be found for around 200 and the q6600 is also around 200, i wonder what makes the q8200 worth that much only, plus most people would buy the q6600 and the q9300 mostly. Any ideas?

Hi!
As far as i know the Optiplex Desktop Workstation was sold with Q9650 CPUs by Dell.
Mine has a Core 2 Duo inside and i bought an Q9650 in order to upgrade my System.
I flashed the newest BIOS but i still get a incompatible CPU detected screen when switching the PC on.
Any hints? Was this optiplex sold with different Mainboard revisions for Core duo or Quad?

Simon

i bought off ebay a q6700 quad core processor king build? i installed it with new thermal paste and when i boot it up it sees the new cpu and everything in the diagnostics passed but it gets to the desktop screen and after a couple seconds shuts down and restarts over and over.
i have been using this pc for 2 weeks and it runs great no hiccups but when i put the processor in it randomly shuts down immediately.
i put the old psu in and still there is restarting problems, when i put the old processor in it runs fine again, in fact i am writing this from it now.
i have seen others install a q6700 but none of the post i have read state what the os is? could xp be holding it back? i wont upgrade because this runs old games better then my windows 7 pc with xp mode.

This also applies to Core 2 Duo from Intel.

Hello,
I'm in the current works of making a new PC at the moment, if maybe I could get some insight on what else I should get for my new system. This will be used as a gaming machine, and I need high performance parts. At the moment, I only have the motherboard, an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard, with support for LGA775 Processors. Pretty much, im looking for the correct hard drive, something fast, and large. Also suggestions on a video card, I had in mind the ATI Radeon 2900 Series Video Card. RAM suggestions would also be appreciated, I really would like to make this a really good computer. thanks for reading,

A:Intel Quad-Core Q6600

I recently upgraded to Q6600/2Gb/2900PRO you can see what I've chosen here:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic89113.html

It cost just over £600 ($1262) and runs every game/app at blistering speeds

Heres some FPS/scores that I can achieve:

Gears of War 40-60FPS /Maximum settings (no AA/AF)
Bioshock 40-60FPS /Maximum settings (no AA/AF)
PES 2008 60FPS /Maximum settings
World in Conflict 35FPS /Maximum settings (no AA/AF and two or three settings turned off)
Crysis 20-40FPS /Maximum settings 1024x768 (no AA/AF, shadows turned off)
3DMark 06 score 11,000+

My processor is overclocked to 3.0ghz, RAM is 4-4-4-12 and 2900PRO is @820mhz/1800mhz

Times change quickly where computer components are concerned though so I'm sure if you look around more you'll find even better value for money than I have, for example 8800GT 512mb is perhaps a better choice than 2900PRO at the moment...

Hello, my name is Miguel and I've been trying to underclock for quite some time now.
I've been close but I don't know why but I just crash or freeze ;/, I've used SetFSB. ( and used PLL number CV174CPAG, and SetFSB indicates that my MhZ has lowered, but shortly after, I just freeze.) I've tried using other CV PLL's and some of them let me lower the flier but my MhZ stays the same. I'd really like to underclock so if anyone can help me, please do.

A:intel core 2 quad q6600 kentfield g0 and ram

Are you asking if you add faster memory will it improve performance or are you asking if you replace the memory?
If you add faster memory and mix it with the slower memory, all memory will run at the speed of the slowest chip you have installed.

Please elaborate on what you have and what you want to do since your System specs state 3GB of ram and you are asking about 512MB of ram.

Also, DDR2 ram is more expensive than the current DDR3 that is the current standard, so I would try not to spend too much money on DDR2 as it won't work with newer systems so you would be basically throwing away your money.

I've seen posts with people over clocking it to atleast 3.0 with just fan heatsinks like i have. I am not using the default heat sink, but instead am using a nice heatsink with 90mm fan built inside that barely fits in the case, never had any problems with it before.

You haven't posted your RAM type.

If you have DDR2-800 (PC-6400), then run the multiplier at x8, BUS at 400 yields core speed of 3.2GHz - keeps clocks nice (FSB-DRAM divider = 1:1) and makes the RAM very happy.

Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe witch according to Microsoft has to do with

This problem occurs if one or more of the processors in the computer:
•Require a microcode update that is not applied by the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS).
•Are damaged or defective.
•Are operating outside their specified ranges for temperature, power, or other conditions.

temperature are fine, power should be fine have a 630Watt. You may read the whole bug check and tell me what u think.

When you install the Vista 64, only put one stick of RAM in until you do the SP1 upgrade and then the other upgrades. Install the other stick after the OS is up and running. Also get the drivers for your video card from the nVidia website. They have the signed version, while at last check, xFx and evga did not. Also make sure you flash the BIOS on your 750i that download of course you can get from the board manufacturer, but what the heck, while you are on the nVidia site you may as well download it as well. Get the latest audio driver from the realtek site if you are using the onboard sound. I'm assuming that the 750 uses the realtek audio same as the 790.

Just make sure you have the latest drivers for your stuff, Vista 64 is not always a happy camper when it doesn't get the latest drivers. Brink did a thread on the audio drivers, you don't have to read the whole thing (it's like 9 million pages lol) just the last page or two will contain the up to date stuff. Have fun. I built this rig, my first build, and it hasn't blown up yet............. although there was some serious thought of taking a sledge hammer to it a time or two...........

I have an XPS 410, and I plan to get a Core2 Quad Q6600, but in the mean time, I want to try to "overclock" the CPU with electrical tape. Is it possible?

A:Is it possible to overclock a Dell XPS 410 (Intel Core2 VIIV 6600) with Electrical Tape?

It depends on your CPU. I've done it with a few, but it just doesn't work on certain boards and CPUs. I tried it on a Vostro 200 board and a C2D 6420 @2.13 GHz. It worked, but I'd have to stick it in something to tell you the resulting frequency. I believe the resulting clock was about 2.6GHz.
Using Passmark for CPU tests, the C2D 6420 typically gets 1360 on the CPU mark - I was able to squeeze out 1900.
It works very well on Wolfdale chips - use CPUID's CPU-Z to determine your chip's family.
Check RandomGamingInHD's channel for info on it, he did a video a while back with an older Optiplex.

I have been getting periodic BSOD on a machine that I recently built with an ASUS P2K-E motherboard and a Core2 Quad Q6600 processor. This is running Windows 7 RTM.

I can go a day or two with no problem and then have 2 BSOD within a couple of hours. No apparent pattern to it. The other day it happened while I wasn't even touching the keyboard. No audio or video going on - the screen just all of a sudden went blue and restarted.

I'm using all peripherals on the motherboard (audio, etc) except for the NIC. I suspected that might be the problem, so I disabled it and installed a dLink GB NIC. Same problem though. All drivers are from Windows Update. I didn't have to manually load anything other than the dLink driver for tyhe NIC - just got automatically detected and installed when I loaded the machine.

I attached the dump files. Greatly appreciated if someone can give me a clue here what might be going on.

I can transfer all these existing hardware for the new motherboard except the RAM (DDR1 or DDR3) and a better 1Gb PCI Express video card after that.

A:Getting a modern motherboard / Intel Quad Core for my old Dell 2400

Firstly, budget for CPU+mobo? Also, have you made up your mind on Intel? If you're on a constraint you may consider AMD.

As for motherboard brands, Gigabyte, ASUS and MSI are excellent choices. You may also add DFI to that list.

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could provide some options on cooling for this motherboard and processor. Space is very limited, so a more vertical heat sink would work better opposed to a flat broad one.

Thanks

I just installed my core 2 quad and the temp is around 55 c to 57 c. Is this a good temp. I have a themaltake v1 fan. Is there any other better fans to bring the temp down to like mid 40's

A:Core 2 quad q6600 temp

That's not a bad temp but it could be lower. You could get a Zalman heatsink/fan (hsf), i have found them to be very effective.

Google for reviews if you want, to find one that will reduce your temp the most

I have a HP dx2300 that I took out the Pentium 4 3.2 GHz CPU out and put in a Q6600 quad 2.4 GHz CPU with 4 GB of memory. This works fine for XP and 2003 but Vista, 2008 and windows 7 will not install. So I took out the Quad Q6600 and put in the Pentium 4 and installed Windows 7. Then I put the Quad Q6600 back in booted to safe mode and disabled 1 of the cores. Running 3 cores it works fine. But if I enable the forth core it locks up immediately.

First of all I wanted to ask, to make the most of the Quad-Core technology should I be running 64-bit Vista or 64-bit XP??? (mostly used for gaming, hardcore).

Second, I am currently installing 32-bit XP as I do not have the 64-bit at the moment, and after XP installs, it restarts as part of the install process. After this occurs it shows the 39minute til fully installed, etc, etc, then it crashes to blue screen reading "Beginning Memory Dump" (A.K.A. The blue screen of death). So is there a way to fix this???? I have tested my hard drives, 100% working, my memory is new, so I would assume it to be working (although my previous memory was DOA), so what is most likely causing this???
My setup for reference:

Q6600 - Quad-Core Intel Processor G0 Stepping - Water Cooled
XFX nForce 680i LT MOBO
4 X 160GB 7200rpm SATA HDs (all working, tested)
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Geforce 6800 Ultra OC PCI-E G-card
4 gigs PC-6400 DDR2 memory - Dual Channel (all same model #)
Standard DVD Player
Standard Floppy

Please help me, I am in a real bind at the moment and am off for Holiday Break from college and am BORED AS HELL!!!!

Thank you,

Hello guys, I'm totally newbie in building desktop computers from scratch as I've been buying desktop PCs from retail stores! So this time I'm thinking to build one myself and save some money as well as learning something as an outcome!

I'm currently having a Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU which I want to use it on the new system!
So was wondering whether is possible to use the following RAM on the given CPU or not? If not then what CPUs would work on the following RAM?

Here is the RAM that I'm looking to buy from Amazon UK;
Link: amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMX6GX3M3A1600C9-DDR3-SDRAM-Memory/dp/B002LZ1FPG/ref=sr_1_14?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1291044698&sr=1-14

Bye the way, does any of you know what sort of motherboard brand does Apple uses for its MAC Pro desktops!
I've done a lot of research, but nothing found so far!
Appreciate any help!
Thanks,

A:Can I use Core 2 Quad Q6600 for DDR3 RAM and motherboards?

You won't find anything about the Mac pro motherboard because its made specifically for the mac pro for Apple. I doubt very much you could ever get it to fit in a standard case as the design from what I've seen is totally different. That said, the price will be outrageous and make it a pointless purchase anyway.

Your Q6600 is a socket 775 CPU, so your restrained by your current motherboard as to what RAM it can run. I'm guessing your stuck with DDR2.

We need more information from you, specifically the motherboard and manufacturer of your computer (if its been store purchased), and what operating system (32bit/64bit as well) that your using.

You could order a new Socket 775 motherboard that supports DDR3 RAM, but in my eyes its pointless, as your purchasing older hardware for the same or more money than purchasing newer stuff. You could probably sell your Q6600 and make some decent money to use towards a new CPU though.

This is gonna sound silly, but should I re-install XP after installing a Q6600 CPU in place of an E6420?

I don't think it neccasary, just reset the BIOS - but I could be wrong.

If I was swapping to another C2D, I wouldn't bother asking, but being a Quad I'm concerned Windows may not recognise it properly.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

I have an Optiplex 760 small form that I recently had to reinstall Windows 7 due to a hard drive issue, I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit, I have 2 Gigs of Ram and a 3.00 Core2Duo processor. After the reinstall of Windows I am not able to set the proper resolution of my Dell 1909wf (widescreen monitor) the proper resolution of 1440x900, I am not able to select it. I have my monitor connected though VGA as that is the only connection on my computer. When I go in to Device Manager, I have a little warning triangle next to Intel (R) 4 Series Internal Chipset. When I click on properties of the Intel 4 chipset, the error is:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.
I have downloaded the drivers for the graphics card and for the chipset directly from Dell by entering the service tag and have rebooted my computer several times with no success. I have even had Windows search for the latest update and It says I have the latest driver installed. I also have a warning triangle on Intel (R) Management Engine Interface. Keep in mind that my computers graphics card worked great and had the proper drivers on 7 before the hard drive was re-imaged. I have other 760s with the same specs and monitors that have no issues. I can post more screen shots if needed.

Thanks!

A:Dell Optiplex 760- Intel 4 Graphics Issue

Welcome to Seven Forums.
Go into device manager and see if your monitor is listed.
If it is listed as pnp. I would suggest going to Dell to see if their is a.inf file (driver) for it and install it.

Installing the .inf file should get your monitor recognized and this will allow it to run it's native resolution.

Hello. I seem to be having a 16 bit app problem. The integrity of autoexec.nt, config.nt and command.com are perfect. I have reinstalled XP Pro SP2 to make sure all other files were in good condition. The errors vary a little from application to application. But it only seems to be 16 bit apps. I try the same apps on my other XP Pro SP2 single processor machine and they work just fine. Heres what Im running on:

Intel Core 2 @ 2.40GHz
ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium Mobo
2 GB of DDR 3 RAM (Im pretty sure its DDR 3)
6 SATA Drives
1 DVD-R/RW
2 Nvidia GeForce 7950 GT GFX cards. (SLI off)
2 Monitors on primary video card. (1600x1200 max , 1280x1024 max)
Svideo out to TV
SoundMax Sound Card supplied with Mobo
Windows XP Pro SP2

So, my guess would be the Core 2. Any ideas from anyone else?
Thank you

Im getting abouttt... 9400 in 3DMark06. That does not seem right at ALL for me because from what ive heard, quad core alone is 7000 points! Maybe im wrong because my system is 0% overclocked from top to bottom, but im really confused about how i could be recieving that score. Could anyone maybe help me out on how to boost the score or maybe tell me why im getting a score along those lines?I REALLY appreciate the help. Maybe even some tips on what to change in bios ( voltages, multiplier, ect ) to get the processor running somewhere between 2.8-3.0Ghz stable? Whatever you can throw in helps! THANKS so much guys.

A:Low 3DMark06 Quad Core Q6600, 8800GTS 640MB Score.

Your cpu speed will take a part in your score. And you're probably running the free version. Yes the card by itself probably yields a 7k score, but you have to register to test the card by itself. Even when I had my quad 6700@3.5 my score was still only 13k.

I have some issue with setting up daisy chain with 2 U2415. Does this because of my HD 2000 onboard card that doesn't support MST?

I recently purchased a pair of U2415 screens which only come with HDMI and mini / normal display port.
My PC is old DELL optiplex 790 which has on board graphic card Intel HD 2000 coming with 1 VGA + 1 Display port.
My daisy chain set up : PC  Display port out --> normal display port --> mini display port in to monitor 1 --> display port out --> mini display port in --> monitor 2.
Monitor 1 is with DP 1.2 enable, monitor 2 is with DP 1.2 disable.
Do you know if there is anything else i can do to have this daisy chain working? What are the other option i have?
1. buying new graphic card (which probably need to replace PSU as well)
2. buying vga - display port converter.

Thanks,
