Harddisk Space

Q: Harddisk Space

Hi all,

I have some harddisk space problems, where i need your help.

I have allocated 100GB for my system drives, and 50GB is the actual space used for the system, while the balance is free space. This morning, i notice that about 32GB has been "used", and the balance free space shown is 18GB. I have look through all the folder, in cluding hidden file in the system drive...but...is fantastic, i sum up with total 50GB.

Where my 32GB gone????

Thank you,

Best regards,

Puah

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

that happen to me too harddisk space gone so fast.

i think it is because of a harddisk virus that eat your harddisk space .

so maybe do a defrag and scan your computer for virus and spyware.

I had to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 as my PC was getting slower and slower and really bloated. After the OS install I also installed FF, Thunderbird, Alibre Design (170Mb installer), MoI (16Mb installer) and Avira. Not a lot, right?

It seems though that only 129Gb of my 148Gb harddisk is still available. 19Gb for an OS and a few piddly programs?!

A:What is using my harddisk space?

Don't know if this is the reason but installers are usually much smaller than the actual program. Just as an example, the free Nitro PDF reader says the installer is 28MB, but the installation footprint is 106MB, and it can use up to 335MB of available hard drive space.

About

If you go into control panel > programs and features it may show the size of each installed program, app, etc. And don't forget to include other things like Windows Updates, whether or not you've installed IE9 or some other browser, your anti-malware suite, etc.

Hi
I have bought this DELL INSPIRON N5010 five months back. I was running that with Windows 7. For some reasons I wanted to reinstall my OS. I tried with Windows 7 Ultimate. But it did not work. Later I could not login to my previous windows 7 proffesional also, getting the error some recent hardware or software change caused this problem. So I tried to install Ubuntu Linux and I was successful in doing so. Now the concern is , out of my 500 GB hard-disk, 420 GB is now become unusable. I could not see the partitions from parted utility from Ubuntu Linux. So I checked the partition table, there it is listed as Unusable space.

A:Harddisk space became unusable

If you're on Linux you might as well learn to use it:
parted - Linux Command - Unix Command

Either that or download Partition Wizard iso and burn to CD
Just google

Hello,
Recently I was on the internet using Internet Explorer when a message popped up:
"IE is using too much space. It is using 245 MB right now. Close it down."
That's the basics of the message. I closed it as it said. However, the problem has not been fixed even though I ran a virus scan and a CCleaner scan. Even worse, I found out it is NOT IE causing the problem because the megabytes are also vanishing every second even when I'm only on the desktop of Windows 7 doing absolutely nothing.
What should I do? Please help me.
Also, the problem has now gotten WAY more serious, because I keep getting the message "Line Overflow nr. 2145" and the numbers keep changing. And when I get those every 5 minutes, I lose about 2 GB... so it is very serious now unfortunately.

Hi guys,
I need help with my Windows XP.
I was infected with Vundo and I tried to fixed it with AVG antivirus.
The problem is after my computer "seemed" clean, my harddisk is suddenly full and does not have any free spaces. I believe I still have around 5 GB before this all happened. In addition, there is also pop-up windows still coming out and at the system tray there is a notification which says "Low Disk Space and so on ..."
Right now I can not download any software to scan or install. Can someone help me with this problem ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

I have an IBM Lenovo laptop computer with a single partition. The total hard disk space is 46 GB of which 20 GB was free which I re-confirmed yesterday seconds before transferring a 30 minute video from my camcorder that was 6 GB in size to the computer. After the video clip was transferred, it didnot play on the computer as it was corrupted for some reason. So I deleted the clip and also cleaned up the RECCLE BIN. Now when I look up free space on my computer, it shows only 6 GB free instead of 20 GB.
I even tried adding up the sizes of individual folders under C: drive and they come up to less than 26 GB which means the free space on my hard-drive should definitely be @ least 20GB. Where did the 14 GB suddenly disappear ? I even tried this by turning on the view HIDDEN FILES option.
I tried rebooting the system, ran disk cleanup utility, disk defrag but still the system shows only 6 GB free. Please advise me as to how to retrieve the 14 GB that suddenly disappeared for no reason.

thanks

A:Harddisk space suddenly dropped down for no reason

Download a disk analysis program such as JDiskReport. It will scan your hard disk and tell you what is taking up the space.

It may be taken in folders, such as the system information folders for System Restore, which you do not have access to and therefore cannot find out their size. If you confirm that there is missing space it may help to run checkdisk against your hard drive, bearing in mind that it takes a long time.

hey guys....i really messed up my win7 upgrade

i wanted a fresh install of windows 7 OS so i selected Custom install after backing up all data. besides, i also wanted to create a new partition.

when i selected custom install, it asked me which drive i wanted to install to. i selected the one i had already. and it just went ahead and installed it

when everything was done and the PC restarted, it said that i only had 168 GB of free space left out of a total 288 GB.....this when i had absolutely no files or programs installed. so basically i lost the amount of space on my hard disk.

and yes, i never got to create the new partition that i wanted

now i want to reinstall Win7, but the problem is i only have an upgrade DVD.

the question are:
1. will i be able to re-use this DVD to reinstall the OS?
2. if yes, how do i do it? because when i insert the DVD it says upgradation is complete and the option is no longer active....
thanks guys

Welcome to Seven forums, boxieblue.

1. Yes, you can re-install using the upgrade DVD.

2. Look at these tutorials:

Basically, you boot from the DVD and then follow the steps in the above tutorials.

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

you have to swap out the drive completely. at no time should you have both hdd plugged in.

repeat, do not run them as master and slave. run each hdd individually at each time only.........

I have an HP Envy 17 notebook. My notebook has 2 hard drive slots. It came with 2 500 GB HDD's. I decided to re vamp my laptop when I got it new. I put in a 40 GB SSD as my main drive. Desiganted as the C: Drive. I didnt have money for anything larger and I had my mind set on having a fast SSD instead of a normal HDD. I also put in a 320 GB Hard drive as the secondary drive. Its my E: Drive.

I also put in 8GB of Random Access memory. It came with 4GB. I then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate to my 40 GB SSD. I had about 7 GB left after installing. I just wanted a fast boot up. And I wanted Windows to run fast and smoothly.

Awhile later My SSD started having space disappear for no reason. I wasn't installing anything new on the drive, nor was I saving anything extra to it either. The extra 7 GB dwindled down to about 200 MB. Now my notebook is always running on low disk space. I have tried removing unwanted programs. I also tried clearing out cookies, history and my cache. Even tried removing system restore and shadow copies. And also tried the windows disk cleanup utility.

Does anyone know why my SSD started to have space magically vanish? I would like the space back. And can anyone give me any other ideas on how to free space on the drive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

A:How to bring back the amount of free space and used space on a hard drive

I'm a little confused about your question

You can't see how much drive space you have left when viewing your C drive via My Computer, or similar?

If you right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the new window pops up click on Disk Management from the left hand side. What does that tell you about C drive? Assuming your C drive is actually a hard drive (and not a CD drive or something, though I have never heard of this happening and don't even know if it's possible to have C as your CD drive), you should see details at the top of the screen such as how much space you have left, by percentage of total capacity, as well as GB

Hi I have a HP pavilion g6 laptop on windows 7 home premium. A few weeks ago the space bar enter back space and up and down arrow keys stopped responding whilst I was typing on face book. I shut the laptop down, this did not work. I checked the filter and sticky keys weren't on , I put them on then unchecked them to clear. This did not work. I went on the HP help site where they suggested I take the battery off and hold the on button for 60 seconds then power back up. I did this and to my surprise it worked. Great I thought. But just a couple of days ago the same keys stopped responding again. I tried the same fix but this time nothing.
Can anyone help.... Is this a common fault ? I need the keys to work again ASAP.

I received a warning message on my Sony Vaio laptop to clear up space because I'm running out of it.  I looked on my C drive and was down to 9.34 GB of hard drive space out of 500GB.  I know I'm at least supposed to have 150-200 GB's left.  So then I proceeded to delete a few 1gb+ files(even cleared them out of the recycle bin) and went to check if I had more space and nothing changed.  So I decided to update Malwarebytes when I notice that my drive space is still decreasing to 8GB's now.

Next I decide to reboot in safe mode with networking.  I update Malwarebytes again and it picks up nothing after a full scan.  So then I decide to update and run SuperAntiSpyware Portable.  It actually picks up two registry entries from BHO-FBI Money Pak and some tracking cookies. I quarantine those files and boot back in regular mode and I notice the drive is still losing space.  I figure their has to be something wrong because when I'm in safe mode with networking their is about 137GB of space left on the drive.  I'm confused as to what to do next?  This is very weird.

I have a fairly new CarbonX1 20HR.  While editing a document, I noticed that I cannot use the ctrl+shift+space shortcut to enter a non-breaking space in a document.  I've verified that it works in Word, but that character combination doesn't come through to the application from either my laptop or USB Logitech keyboard.  Other similar ones, like ctrl+shift+_ for a non-breaking hyphen and ctrl+space for a ResetChar command, work fine.  It seems that shift and space combination has no effect. I'm thinking this may related to the Fn+space activation of the keyboard backlighting, since this is the first time I've tried this since getting this laptop.  I know I can reassign it if needed, but wondering if there is a fix for the underlying cause. Thanks!

Hello to all.

I have a problem with my windows 7 pro laptop that shows only 7,49/100 GB free memmory. I tried to delete all shadow copies and previous versions. Also did chckdsk /f which give me 0 errors, tried to search in hidden and OS files, but there arent any big files, diskcleanup with system files cleaned about 1 gb.
Then I downloaded winDirStat which shoved me that I only have 43Gb of data on my c: drive. I don't have any ideas what could be done to increase free disk space. Please help

A:Windows show low disk space, win dir stat shows different space

In My Computer, click the Tools menu then on Folder Options then click the View tab and tick "Show hidden files and folders" then untick "Hide protected system files and folders", click Apply and OK.

Then, go into c:\ windows and delete all the files in blue which statr with a $ symbol. They are only folders that once contained Windows Updates you no longer need to keep. Then scroll down to the Software Distribution folder and to Download. Empty that folder.

Look in Control Panel>Power options and make sure Hibernation is turned off then in System, adjust the size of System Restore so it takes up only 4% of the disk space.

Restart the computer and see hwo much space you freed up.

I have a computer that has their "c: drive" almost full (221 gb drive). Every time it boots a message comes up saying "Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging file size for all disk drives may be somewhat larger than the size you specified." So first I tried adjusting the Virtual Memory BUT, I only have a drive C and a previous drive that is no longer there. So I am not for sure what drive to set my virtual memory to because there is not enough space on C drive with it being almost completely full and the one drive is non-existent. I am sure its a easy fix and im missing a step but i appreciate the help guys   Thanks!

A:Low Disk Space "Temporary File Space Error"

I would type Run in the search box. Start it and then in the Run box type %temp%. This will open up the temp folder for the current user. These files are safe to delete. Log in to every other user and use the same command. Once those are deleted, use Ccleaner to clear all the browser cache then set the Paging file to 1.5 times the RAM on the system.

The problem is that the free space in the screenshot below cannot be deleted to make an unallocated space nor can it be used to create a new volume. Also the c: & d: drives are not able to extend from the free space available thus rendering those 92.89 GB useless.

I have also tried the help in the second link given above; i.e by using the partition wizard (i used a bootable usb for the same) i tried to convert the free space to primary partition, but that option(convert to primary) too was greyed out in the partition wizard when i tried to do so. The other option to resize the partition was also greyed out in the same partition wizard.

I also executed the chkdsk /f in an elevated command window as suggested in the first link. But no error was encountered and my laptop is working fine. I just want to recover that free space.

If I missed this in your post, I apologize. But what happens if you assign a drive letter to the free space? Can you then delete and use disk management or partition wizard to extend the C partition?

i installed ubuntu on my ssd and had a dual boot laptop, however i want to use my ssd as a cache drive, henceforth i deleted ubuntu and now i have unallocated space and free space on my ssd and i am wondering if i need to covert that into a new partitioned volume that can be used as a cache drive

A:Use unallocated space and free space on ssd as cache drive

I think you need to allocate the free space as a linux swap partition and format it as such.

My first issue is that my users will be entering in item numbers with spaces. These items #'s are the same for my pic files but without spaces.

I''ve tried this....=SUBSTITUTE(D7," ","") - But my issue is I have the code below to look at a cell to grab a picture and when it uses this it does not see the item number in the cell but sees the code - didn't work.

How do I add to the code below to take cell A21 and do the substitute for any spaces.

Sub ShowPicture()

Dim DirPath As String
Dim FileName As String
Dim Pic As StdPicture

DirPath = "\\bssmas01\APPS\MAS90\Images\001"
FileName = Worksheets("CutRequestForm").Range("A21")
FileName = DirPath & "\" & FileName & ".bmp"

If Dir(FileName) <> "" Then
Set Pic = LoadPicture(FileName)
With Worksheets("CutRequestForm").Image1
.Picture = Pic
.Height = Pic.Height / 25.4
.Width = Pic.Width / 25.4
End With
Else
MsgBox "The Picture File was not found -" & vbCrLf & FileName, vbExclamation
End If

End Sub

A:Solved: Excel VB/Macro to substitute space with no space

I figured it out!!!
I should of worked harder before I started to ask.

FileName = Trim(Replace(FileName, " ", ""))

Hi, I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb. I emptied the recycle bin of course.

Is there a way to recalculate disc space? I have Windows XP and I do have Norton System Works. This isn't the first time disc space hasn't matched recent actions. Thanks in advance.

A:Free Space inaccuracies?? Calculating disc space?

If the video wasn't in My Docs then 'System Restore' in XP may have recorded the change to enable a future restore. To record a 700mb deletion that it may be asked to restore back takes 700mb.
System restore ignores the My Docs folder so the above is irrelevant if the video was deleted from that location.

So I was always able to run a game called pirate101 by kingsisle on my mac and its virus free so I know its not the problem. One day it stopped working and I kept getting told to install and download Mcafee virus protection but I don't understand whats
wrong. It said I had 29.00 GB of disk space available but now it says there's only 21MB available I don't see how this is possible.

I would appreciate guidance in solving this mystery:
the capacy of the hardrive in my Acer i3 proces - is 452GB, on recent check it shows 413GB used and under Users used space it's only 140GB (this makes sense to me) so...I cannot figure out how come there is such big discrepancy on the space used in my computer...I don't have great knowledge of computers but reasoning on this issue leaves me to believe there is something wrong and I would appreciate help from the large knowledgeable forum members.

Thanks
Samantha

A:Hardrive space not reconcilie with actual user's used space..

Download and run WinDirStat which will allow you to see what's hogging the space and where it is. For instance, in the screenshot below I've followed the biggest folder on my C: drive to find out what is using up all the space, which is my virtual machine.

Hey guys,
I'm having a big problem with my hard drive space. First of all it keeps decreasing for no apparent reason when i am connected to the internet even though i'm not downloading anything. And i'm not talking about mb but GB!! My first guess was a vius so i ran my antivirus (avast) and removed some issues, but the trouble continues... I installed the WinDirStas as i saw in other posts to find if i missed something. And to my surprise i discovered that my HD is occupied by ~80GB of unaccessible files! I'm not sure i am saying that correctly so see for yourselves...

A:Hard drive space decreasing and showing less space available

I think you should read as 8 point 8... but you do need more overhead for Windows. Look at your pagefile settings in System and maybe have a look at what Windows Indexing settings are...

Hi

We just placed a new Dell Dimension. It has a 40 Gig hard drive.

User keeps getting this message:

DISK FREE SPACE HAS DROPPED BELOW THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD. FREE UP SPACE ON YOUR HARD DISK DRIVE BY:

1. BACKING UP YOUR DATA TO A TAPE BACKUP, ZIP OR NETWORK DRIVE
2. DELETE UNUSED FILES

IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHICH FILES ARE SAFE TO MOVE OR DELETE, CONTACT YOUR HELP DESK OR CONSULT YOUR SOFTWARE MANUALS.

This machine has over 30 gigs of free space. It's impossible that there is a disk space issue.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Some sort of mis-communication or setting?

Thanks

A:Disk Space Error - 30 Gigs free space

It should be a configuration setting. I'd call Dell if you just got this machine. Their "english" is a little suspect though. It sounds like some hokey Dell software reminding you to back up your drive. When does the message appear? After it boots?

Setting up a new box, Vista sadly to say. Installed MS Office XP Pro and get the following error when closing MS Word ONLY. Excel saves without any errors.

The disk is full. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk. Try one of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs, and windows.
*Save the document on another disk.

I've moved the file location and same error. I cleaned up the drive including removing all restore point except the last one.

Now this thing has a 250 gig drive but it is also used for security in a mini mart with 8 cameras. There are about 145 Gigs of video from the security cameras on this box. At this time I am just setting it up, no cameras are connected, and the security program hasn't been set up yet. I just moved the files from the old drive to this one. BTW the old drive crashed.

I've tried the detect and repair in MS Word and no help. I have uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled and no help and even went into Properties and set the user up on quota with no limits and still no help.

So now I am at a loss and have no idea what to try next. Really don't want to delete the security files because it took 6 hours to transfer them to this computer and unless all else fails this isn't a option I want to use.

Now on the old box, which had XP Pro this, was not a problem so on Vista it should not be either but then Vista is a MS Software so this is understandable. Actually, the old box had a 15... Read more

Hello,

Re: Win98SE - Intel 465 Mhz

The harddisk in my PC is 8 GB of which only 2,56 GB is still available now.
From I similar PC (done away in the meantime) I still have a 8 GB IDE harddisk.
and want to place it in my PC.
Please mind that I have never opened a PC sofar.

a) I don't know to what electronic circuit-cable it must be connected (wondering about serial and parallel)

b) then this second harddisk must somehow be connected to and made visisable to the system (by cables I think; however what cables, new ones or
already present)

When I tried to google this subject I only found items on partitioning etc, not
about how to get and connect a second harddisk inside a PC.
Furthermore I have no idea whether there are special well-known problems
related to having a seond harddisk installed (e.g. very slow system)

Advises will be highly aprreciated.

Best regards,
a.ruiter

I have an ultraDMA harddisk from compaq. I hope to know what is the ATA and RPM value of my 20GB drive. Is there some software that I can use to check it?

A:Harddisk

The only 20 GB HDD I could find on the Compaq site is 20GB Ultra ATA 100 Hard Drive (7200rpm)
251974-B21

This was at http://www.compaq.com/products/desktops/options/options_storage1.html
That doesn't mean that there aren't more. The way to know, for certai8n, is to open your system up, and get the part number, or full specs from off the HDD case itself.

hi

i have a western digital 160gb caviar blue hd now i want to buy a new one but some questions are bothering me

first is seagate any better than western digital i ask this because 1tb seagate is just slightly expensive than 500gb western digital so should i go for seagate?

second is that if i buy seagate, will it cause any problem to the system having one wd hd and one seagate?

please answer in details would love to hear anything to increase the knowledge

A:help about a new harddisk?

1. you can mix any makes of disks. They are all 'compatibel'.

2. the make does not matter. They are all the same since they all come from the same factories in Thailand. I have a dozen different makes and do not notice any difference.

3. except Seagate - one of those just died on me. The first and only disk that died in my installations.
