Dell Optiplex 755 MT Ubuntu Linux 14 14.04 noise on audio output / noisy sound card simple solution

Q: Dell Optiplex 755 MT Ubuntu Linux 14 14.04 noise on audio output / noisy sound card simple solution

I would like to share my experiences how to fix noisy audio output on Dell Optiplex 755 under linux. I did try changing power supply, better video card, adding separate sound card (front panel audio output doesn't work then) updating drivers and even changing the whole computer. I was first sure that the reason for the noise must be old capacitors somewhere in the system board or in the power supply. It took me months to find the solution.
The symptoms are: static noise on audio even if there should be no sound at all. The noise doesn't depend on the audio volume.
The solution: open terminal, start alsamixer. HDA Intel Analog Devices AD1984 should open. Use right cursor key to scroll the screen until Beep audio level adjust is selected. Lower the volume of Beep down. This should fix the noisy output. I set the Beep volume to 6%.Apparently Beep sound output produces low level noise even if no beep sound is produced. If Beep volume is adjusted to high in alsamixer, this noise is amplified and added to the audio mix.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

A:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

Having installed Linux Mint as a dual boot OS, I had no immediate issues with the sound in Linux whether through the speaks or headphones.
I then followed up on some recommended steps to do after installing Linux. One of which was to install TLP, a linux power management tool that essentially helps to boost battery life. (Not as good as the one on Windows, but better than nothing). Anyway, its a pretty hands-off tool, next time you reboot it runs by itself.
However,  soon after installing this tool, I noticed that whenever an audio stream started there was a popping sound and whenever the audio stream ended, few seconds later there was the popping sound again. It was very annoying and painful at times, especially when wearing headphones.
After several hours of investigation, I discovered that TLP was powering up and off the sound card in order to conserve battery life. I then proceeded to look up the docs for TLP and found the following configurable settings ...

To edit the TLP config, do ... (Note: gedit or any other simple text editor)
gksudo gedit /etc/default/tlp
(Note: gedit or any other simple text editor)

# this was my default setting, where it was powering off the sound card when running on battery ...

Hi all, I have recently bought a HP Elite book 840 G3 and installed Linux/ubuntu 16.04. Everything works properlyexcept one thing which is really problematic for me : the VGA output does not work and I am not able to getany image of the computer. I have tested it on more tan 20 videoprojectors and I get only one casewhere I can send the image to videoprojector, all other cases nothing was possible. On the other hand,as I also have Windows 7 installed on a double boot, everything worked out properly with windows. Is there a known incompatibility in the graphic card or whatever works for the VGA outputwith Linux/Ubuntu 16.04 ? Is there a way to solve this issue ? Thanks Cyril

My laptop's sound isn't working, and when I mouse over the speaker icon in the corner there's a red X with the message "No Audio Output Device Installed." I've looked on other forums for the solution and here's what I've tried so far:

-I've been told to disable and enable the sound device in Device Manager, but there's nothing under "Sound Video and Game Controllers"

-I've tried to reinstall the audio drivers (Realtek HD Audio and Conextant HD Audio). The Realtek driver says it installed correctly, but it still doesn't show up in device manager or anywhere else and the "No Audio Output" message still persists. The Conextant driver gives me the error message "Cannot Find Device" when trying to install it, but I've noticed something weird: I can see a Conextant HD Audio thing under "Add or Remove Programs".

-Windows Audio is running under Administrator Tools, I've checked.

-I've done a system restore back to factory settings and it still doesn't work.

My laptop is a Hp Pavilion dv6700z with Windows Vista Service Pack 1. I think a windows update might have screwed it up; I can hear a popping noise when plugging in my earbuds and I can hear the error beeps under system setup, so the speakers themselves work. Can somebody please help me out?

Also, do you have a Recovery CD or Recovery Partition?

Hello,My problem is this: I have an old  set of speakers such that the left speaker eventually stopped working.
Upon taking it apart, turns out the wire was just pulled away from the solder to the pins.I replaced the wire and it was good as new.
After a few months of use, (once in a while use) the left speaker "stopped" workingI later discovered that it still works, but is very very quiet.Such that, I have to set the right speaker balance to 9% and left to 100% to get the same volume from both speakers.I took it apart today, re-glued the wires back to the pins, no difference.
So I am wondering, with Dell Audio client, and my Dell xps 8700, which has a front and back 3.5mm audio jacks, can I set the balance to the front port to be my 100/9 for the speakers, and 100/100 for the back which connects to my headphones?
I took a look in the audio client, but it looks like no such option exists.Do I go looking for a new set of speakers or is there an easy option here?

A:Can you change the balance output on a specific audio jack output with Dell Audio?

I believe both jacks are controlled and connected to the same ports and software so directing one to do one thing and another to do something different isn't possible as far as I know.  Maybe someone will have a different answer, but I don't think Dell's software is advanced enough.

Hello, I need some help finding a decent video card for my old Optiplex 755 Mini Tower. Not sure why they call it a mini as it certainly a medium size tower. Anyway I know these are pretty old computers so a new video card would be crazy. I would rather pull the trigger for something used on eBay if possible.
I need to be able to plug this 755 MT into my TV via HDMI and watch Movies/Videos with it. I would mostly be using Videolan or Plex to pull this off. Can anyone recommend a video card for this? If i get to play some older games with it this video card great!
The important part of this equation is sound over the HDMI connector. As i have a video card now working but it's hooked up with a Display Port on the video card to a Dell HDMI adaptor cable which supports no sound whatsoever.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi everyone,
I just bought Dell E6440 and I have a problem with almost constantly working, noisy fans. I had E6420 with i5-2520M, 4GB RAM, HD3000 and 120GB SSd and it was way much silent than my new laptop which is great but very noisy.
I have i7-4600M CPU with 8GB RAM, HD 4600, 240GB SSD and Windows 7 Pro now and I noticed that even if I turn on web browser with one card CPU temp reaches over 70 and even 83 C degrees which causes very noisy fan work almost all the time.
I send it back to service but they told me it is natural for that strong machine and it is normal producent acceptable values. I agree but it is only web browser with standard web page (not YouTube HD Video!)
I upgraded BIOS to newest version but the problem still occures.
I reinstalled Windows 7.
I noticed that after I installed every graphic card driver from Dell site chronologic it was getting better with every version but it is still very loud comparing to E6420.
Finally I installed Linux Mint next to Windows and guess what. It works like a charm! Very silent, without almost no noise or high temperature!
What should I do? I need Windows 7 to work. Maybe I should check what will be going on on Windows 10?
Service checked cooling system and cleaned everything twice so it is not the problem especially that laptop works great on Linux.

Please help!

I just got a pair of studio monitors. They're plugged into my PC directly, into the onboard audio.
The problem is that im hearing quite a loud noise coming out of the monitors almost all the time. It stops only when an action is performed on the pc, like clicking or loading from the hard drive. Otherwise, when the pc is idle, there is this noise. It's the same noise i can hear myself coming out of the case, it's very silent, its just that normal noise that PC's are doing (im not sure where it comes from exactly, it's not a fan i'd guess), but it gets somehow into the audio output and the monitors amplify it.

EDIT: Also i tried the monitors with friends laptop - it does the same thing BUT ONLY when the laptop is being charged, if it's on the battery only everything is OK.

What should i do to get rid of this?

A:PC noise getting mixed up with audio output?

Are your connection cables shielded? You could simply be getting interference, either from the power cable or from a device within the PC. I know unshielded audio cables will have problems with interference.

On occasion, when the computer runs, a noise emits out of my computer. It doesn't make the noise constantly, but only when I boot certain programs, specifically Visual Studio Code or PyCharm. This sometimes happens when I'm running Ableton as well. That being said - I'm not entirely sure if the Optiplex 390 just has some peculiar sounding fans or if I'm just looking into it too much. The audio isn't that great on this video I took but if you put the volume up, you can faintly hear it. https://vimeo.com/230839760

Dear All - I have an HP X2 Detachable Laptop - P010NR. Its (sadly) pre-loaded with Windows 10 64bit, with an inbuild memory of 32GB. They all can be installed on this Laptop but, none of them has working sound/audio. I do not use camera, bluetooth etc. on laptop so they do not hold any relevance. But I have to have working audio.  It will be a great help if someone kindly suggest workaroud for installing audio drivers for any of the above OS OR an alternate OS with working audio over this PC. Hi there,
I've got a Dell Optiplex 3040 in my workshop at the moment. The computer seems to turn on: there's a light on the PSU, the HDD indicator flashes, the num lock toggles on and off and the traffic light on the ethernet port is active. However, there's no output from the HDMI port or the display port. The machine only has onboard graphics.
I'm thinking that the onboard graphics are at fault, but I don't have a graphics card that will fit in with the PSU in it's current location.
Any ideas for fixes on this? Thanks in advance!

Did you try a diff monitor and new cable? Hard to solve this without any screen. Which model do you have? Only a couple of model 3040's support a discrete card. If you don't have MT or SFF model you can't install a card.
Supports optional discrete graphics (MT/SFF only): AMD Radeon? R7 350X, AMD Radeon? R5 340X

It looks like its the Intel Serial over Lan driver.  Your computer was never tested by Dell for Windows 10, meaning there are no new drivers created by Intel, etc., that may work.  You could google Intel AMT/SOL and see if Intel does have a driver for your chipset that may work.  It looks like Dell stopped supporting your computer at Windows 8.0

Hello, and thanks in advance for your time!Earlier this afternoon, I noticed that the sound on my Thinkpad W510 was no longer working. I hadn't really done anything of note with my computer- just updated Adobe Reader to v9.2, that I can think of. When I checked the notification area, I saw this:However, when I right click and click "Playback Devices", I get the following: I immediately checked Device Manager, and found that everything appeared to be fine:I tried uninstalled and reinstalling the Conexant and NVIDIA drivers, as well as updating BIOS. Nothing seems to help, When try to use the mute/volume buttons on the keyboard, the speaker mute button lights up when pressed, but the microphone mute and volume +/- buttons don't appear to do anything. I've also tried plugging in headphones, and that does not make any difference. When I boot from an Ubuntu CD, however, sound works fine, so I don't think that it's a hardware issue.Anything that you folks could do to point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, I have purchased this laptop with Windows 10 Home pre-Installed. But due to some Professional requirements, I want to install a Developer friendly linux distro on it. I'll be using many VMs in that distro along with a possible installation of Windows via Wine. Therefore, I want to be sure about the aftermath of all this, including Driver support and battery usage. Has any fellow developer tried the above mentioned linux distros (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / Linux Mint 18.1) on it without any problems? I have checked that it supports Ubuntu 14.04 but want to use the latest LTS versions. Just want to make sure that nothing gets messed up.

I have put Linux Mint 18.1 on two new Dell Inspiron i7 7000 series and it installed and ran without issue.  Be SURE you get Nvidia graphics!

all what I can advice you is to buy a Wireless to Wired bridge

so it makes a wireless works as a LAN ( detected as a LAN but working as WLAN!)

I have this issue on my Dell Inspiron 13 7000 series for very long time. I tried searching Google and Dell support community and I did:
Control Panel > Device Manager > Display Adapters > Intel HD Graphics 5500 > Driver > Update Driver > Search Automatically.
It fixed.
18:35 on 25-Dec-2016: Sorry bro, I did as above; it fixed but when I try pressing the brightness button then It come back problem again: can not adjust the brightness. Hic hic
19:00 on 25 Dec 2016: I even try downloading and installing the latest Intel Graphic Driver (issued on July 2016), but just after a while, the screen comes back very dim.
I accidentally discover this: Setting --> Display --> uncheck the box "Adjust my screen brightness automatically".
Sorry, but stupid Windows!!!!

I have a XPS 15 (9560) and using it with a Dell P2715Q 4k monitor running through a d6000 dock.
Monitor is connected to the dock from mDP to DP and the dock via USB-C to the laptop.
The monitors performance didn't seem great and the images weren't very smooth. The issue is more when playing video or running AutoCAD 2018. When checking the video settings through AutoCAD it is always the on board graphics that is being used not the dedicated graphics. Even when I use the nVidia panel to force the program and global settings to the GTX1050 it doesn't seem to want to use it for the external display.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because as far as I was concerned the laptop shouldn't have an issue running the monitor at 4k 60Hz.

Ok so I just recently got a Dell optiplex GX 755 PC that has-
*Intel core 2 quad processor 2.4 GHz
*8GB ram
*320GB hard drive (kinda small i know, i'm looking to upgrade that as well)
I'm posting this here to see if anyone knows mainly what graphics card i could get that would make my PC gaming friendly. It doesn't have to be the most amazing stellar quality card out there since iv had (some) people tell me that you cant upgrade these PCs much. But just some good quality advice on the subject and maybe a recommendation on what card brand to get as well as the specs for it. Also a recommendation for a video card would be greatly appreciated as well. Sorry for my ignorance on on the subject, i am new to the PC world. I ended up having to get this computer in a pinch because I am a small time graphics design artist and my laptop died, and I had orders coming in. I'm not looking for a quick fix to the problem so even if anyone has a solution that may take a bit or quite a few steps to get underway, the help is still greatly welcomed! I am hoping if its at all possible to make a good situation out of this and maybe build this PC to fit my needs. Thank you to anyone who can help!

A:Graphics card & video card for a Dell Optiplex GX 755 (not the mini tower!)

There are no stellar or even really good low profile fanless 25W cards.  ASUS EAH 5450 has been used in Desktop and SFF.  USFF Cant use anything because it does NOT have slots.

It's the most suspicious sound I've ever heard. It sounds exactly like fat, felt tip marker making a quick check on paper. It can also be compared to a rat sniff or a piece of paper being turned. I wear headphones and can hear this noise occasionally for up to 15 minutes. It likes to happen at night, when 'they' are active ( humor me ). Because of the sneaky, low volume, discreet, low down, creepy, stalky, shifty sound I am disposed to imagine that someone is looking through my files for credit information and they are unaware of these sounds from my sound card, or they don't care about the sound because they are safe from being caught.

Sound like I'm crazy? Just paranoid. I did say it makes me imagine. The kind of person I am is the same kind that will run system restore at a moment's notice for anything that looks suspicious or a NoScript violation. Because that sound is clearly designed to resemble a sniffing rat doing something sneaky on my computer. I tried to record the output with Audacity 1.3, but it had stopped before I had recorded anything.

My setup:

Windows XP Pro 64 bit Service Pack 2
Verizon High Speed Internet
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
LinkSys Router routing to a Windows 7 laptop, WPK-PSK, TKIP
Soundblaster Live!
Mozilla FireFox

A:Solved: Suspicious sound coming from sound card output.

It was that Windows XP search dog. When you ctrl + f to open the search side bar in a window there is an animated dog that seems innocuous. Every 15 minutes or so it will scratch itself and make that noise twice. As long as that search side bar is open, minimized or not, that noise will persist.

So recently I bought a refurbed Optiplex 9020 MT in a kind of emergency situation. My other machine had been stolen, I needed a computer, it was at a store, it looked nice and the nice shop guy gave me a deal.
Sadly, the 1GB OEM card does not cut it, but this machine is very powerful otherwise. I'm running Linux on it, I've been happy so far. Honestly I didn't know PCs were becoming so propietary, I've been using macs so long. I used to build my own PCs all the time so I just never considered that this would be the reality. Anyway...
All over the internet the majority of optiplexers appear to approve of a small form factor GTX 1050ti 4gb as an ideal card upgrade, another is an MSI Pascal, which I almost went for.
Here's the problem: I ordered a Gigabyte PCI-E Windforce with a 1458MHz overclock by mistake. I think I meant to get the "Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC Low Profile." This was like a tired, simple, stupid mistake. So I'm doomed right?
Question: Is there an adapter that can allow me to run a card that requires a PCI-E cable without me having to tear our the PSU? If I have to upgrade the power supply. I might as well just get a new computer. I'm hoping there's a component hack to this. There's also lots of support posts about how replacing the propietary power messes stuff up, I'm just not interested in messing with controlled substances..  It's so weird that Dell went this direction, I'm sort of in shock... I am having problems getting an audio output from my LG tv through a HDMI connection. My laptop is able to detect the tv and had no problem displaying the video. There is no "HDMI output" option available in the playback devices list under audio options. I have tested the hdmi cable with 2 other dell laptops (studio 15 and inspiron 14). Both are able to deliver a sound output through the tv. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This may seem like a vary basic question as it is, but it's kinda annoying and I really don't have a solution.

I have two really nice speakers, but the way my computer is set up, any way I try my left speaker ends up on the right side of my room and my right speaker ends up on the left side, and it impossible for me to switch it.

So I would like to know if there is an adapter, or maybe even a software which will reverse the sound coming out of each speaker?
