X1 Yoga Gen 3 charging issues

Q: X1 Yoga Gen 3 charging issues

At my school we have 15 X1 Yoga Gen 3 we got last summer. We have now had 4 fail in a way that they will no longer charge. If you plug in charger to USB-C port the light doesn't come on and they won't power on once battery is drained. Anyone else have this issue or are we just really unlucky?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Mine charges fine and I have the latest BIOS, etc. Are you using the original charger? Can you try the charger from one of the machines that DOES charge?

I had my Yoga 2 Pro plugged in a few weeks ago, and the plug snapped off. Since then, the battery won't charge, and the laptop won't run off of AC power when the battery is plugged in. Oddly enough, when the battery is unplugged, the laptop will run off of AC power. I have tried the following:Replaced battery (replacement battery doesn't work)Replaced DC in jack (no difference)Unplugged CMOS batteryCleared battery (held down power button with battery unplugged)Any thoughts or suggestions on how to fix this? Is the only fix a replacement motherboard?

Hi all, I do tech support at a university that uses various Lenovo notebooks across campus. I have noticed a trend among the users that have a Thinkpad Yoga 370 Notebook and are using a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock, myself included. Occasionally (every few weeks or so), one of the affected systems will show "plugged in, not charging" tooltip when hovering over the battery tray icon. When this happens, the charge indicator light by the charging port and Thunderbolt port does not turn on, the battery continues to drain, and unplugging the Thunderbolt cable and either plugging it (or the regular power cable) back into the notebook has no effect. These systems all use Lenovo System Update to keep their drivers and BIOS up to date, and I have updated the firmware on the Thunderbolt 3 Docks manually. This issue was brought to my attention because it started happening to me and my laptop/dock after the first few weeks of having it, and this behavior continued to happen for months. I would constantly be plugging in and unplugging my laptop, as I do on-site support in several buildings, and my laptop goes everywhere with me. In October I stopped using my dock entirely, and since then have had 0 problems when just using the laptop's regular charging cable. I have 3 or 4 other users whom I support that have this issue though; due to the sheer volume of documents they need open at once, they need a multi-monitor setup and ethernet ports, so not having a dock is not an option. I purchased a brandnew Yoga 910 4K model back in January and have barely used it since. Video of the problem: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JSzvJqJEZJdhJTFn1 Shown in the video, my laptop has a charging problem, where the LED keeps blinking and my laptop ceases to properly charge. Even when the laptop is completely shutdown, the blinking still occurs. I have uninstalled the ACPI- Compliant Control Method Battery driver and reinstalled it, updated BIOS, and updated all the drivers, but nothing works. Does anybody else have the same issue and can anybody help me solve this?Any help is appreciated!

I just received my Yoga 3 Pro-1370 Laptop from the Lenova Repair Center - this was the 2nd service request for the battery issue.  The laptop battery still does not charge when the AC adapter is plugged into an electrical outlet.  Sometimes the charging indicator light will indicate that it is charging - but charges 10 - 15 seconds and goes off.  Confirmed the battery is not charging even though the light is not on just to be sure the issue is not with the power indicator light.  At this point the Lenova Repair Center has had possession of my laptop longer than I have in 2017.  Not sure where to turn to, Call Center/Support seems to be encountering problems and can't log a Service Call?   Seriously, I was asked to schedule a call for them to call me when their systems are up?  Laptop is under warranty, but I'm beginning to think they are trying to run out the clock. I'm typing fast - as Battery Life is below 10%   Any and all suggestions are welcomed.Regards.

Hi. I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 500 laptop, and I'm quite disappointed. When I plug in my charger, 9/10 times it starts to charge, then immediately stop charging, then charge again for a second. This results in never charging. Eventually it charges normally, but it's completely random and sometimes requires 5+ restarts. I need this laptop for school so taking it off for repair is hard for me but I will do it if there is no other way. I got a second charger from a friend and this still occurs, so the problem isn't with the charger. Anyone have any idea for a fix? Thanks

It seems to charge okay when the laptop is closed and charging but this is very frustrating. Can anyone provide and idea on why this is happening?

I was recently given a Yoga 910 which has barely been used and it seems that i cant charge it unless its off. When its powered on and plugged in it just says its on battery.  I preformed the following stuff: I thought it could be the charger but i tried my macbook pro 15inch USB c charger on it with the same results. Ive tried to reinstall the OS but that didnt work. I took off the back plate and removed the battery then held the power button for 30 seconds but that also didnt work. Has anyone had this issue and fixed it?Its such a nice laptop i would like to get some use out of it. I even tried to update the bios but the software says it has to be plugged in to do that.

Earlier today, my Yoga 3 Pro decided to stop charging.  When plugged in, the battery continues to drain as if it was not plugged in.  I have tested the A/C adapter by plugging in my phone with a micro USB and that worked fine, and the USB charging slot works when my wireless mouse is plugged into it, so I assume it must be the strange Y3P USB cable that is not working.   Would a normal USB to USB cable work for charging my laptop?  If not, how do I replace that "kink" USB cable?  I haven't seen any for sale anywhere and I'd rather not have to pay $40 for a whole new charger on the Lenovo site if the cable is the only issue.

A:Yoga 3 Pro Not Charging

Hello and welcome,

The Y3P and its charger need that special cable.  The charger and laptop have an extra set of pins in the USB sockets that pass 20V to charge the laptop.  A standard USB cable doesn't support those extra contacts.  The charger also provides 5V on the standart USB pins.

Your test of the charger with a your phone shows that the 5V portion of the charger is working but doesn't verify the 20V portion.  It's possible that the charger is bad.

When you plug the laptop and charger together does the battery icon indicate that AC power is attached?  You could have a bad charger, a bad cable, a bad laptop connector (or other component) or the battery management software could be messed up.

Sorry I don't have an easy test or fix.  It may be necessary to actually swap the cable and charger to diagnose this one.

[edit] The Y3P is a fairly new machine.  If this is under warranty, support should be able to help you:  1-877-4-Lenovo, 1-877-453-6686

Hello,I just bought the Yoga 730 and wanted to charge it, but I got the plugged in, not charging alert at about 20% battery. Upon reconnecting it started charging for a few seconds then stopped again. I doesnt seem to be losing power when plugged in and I tried letting it run out of power and then hoping for better results. Once the battery was empty and the laptop went out I plugged it in again and it went up to 33%, but now it stopped charging again. The laptop used to be a showcased model but was reset to factory settings and the battery is in almost perfect shape. Is there a way to fix this issue?

What does it mean when the charger indicator is solid white? What is the best way to maintain battery life?

A:Charging X1 Yoga gen 3

Solid white means fully charged or nearly so.  There is no "best" strategy.  It depends on how often and how long you use it when it is plugged in.  I use mine mostly on battery and I plug it in at night to charge.  I have it set in Vantage to start charging at 70% and stop at 98%.

I have an Yoga 500 that idles charging, meaning that being working on AC power it will hold 15% but not charge further then that. Sometimes but not allways it will hung in between balance mode and power saving mode. The battery seams to be fine as attached test log. I have noticed that the internal power cable is somehow damaged and ordered a new one, but have been reading about faulty motherboards and wonder if this would be one of them as I just got the laptop and I don't know if the previous owner ever took it back to lenovo. I wonder if anyone had similar problems and if there is any way of sorting it out.

Hello, I have bought 910 and reinstall with fresh 1803. I have upgrade bios to latest and installed all drivers from support page.using OEM charger and using proper port for charging (rear). Also device is ok with charger because i can charge tablet when it is turn off. Even in bios it is charging, so i know that there are problem with drivers in windows.Scenario is like this: 1. If i boot with charger pluged in i have exclamation mark in device manager (I2C HID Device) - last picIt says that is is charging but after minute of charging battery indicator stops, (still says charging - but it does not). 2 nd picAfter removing charger and plugin again says only plugged in NOT CHARGING. 1st pic.   2. If i plug in charger after boot i have: no exclamation mark in device managerrest is same as above example. I tried all drivers (which are kind very OLD) , tried Lenovo Vintage (ussless), tried drivers from 920 .. same. Three times i have reinstalled windows even with generic microsoft drivers, it does NOT CHARGE. Also there is annoying screen flickering which i sloved by manually add driver from 920. (not completly still shows sometimes.) will try linux and if that will not work, i am going to return this expensive toy. Funny that i wanted to buy X1 Carbon soon... lol guessing that problem is in Windows changing from ver to ver. and Lenovo, who does not update neither drivers or bios. Sad....

So I had my yoga 920 conk out on me at a VERY inopportune time, next month I go abroad to study. Yesterday I started my laptop and started some light browsing when it suddenly shut down. I tried starting it up again, when it came up with the dreaded blue screen saying 'failed to detect boot device' or something. Third boot try onwards, the laptop does not respond to charging, no lights come on, nothing, NADA. Worst part of it? This happened within 10 months of my purchase from USA. I have 54 days of my warranty remaining. I tried static discharges multiple times, no luck.Went to multiple service centers in Pune, India, but they refused to diagnose the issue saying that they do not service this model since it was not released in India. I'm ready to ship this laptop to the USA with my own expenses to have it fixed or replaced, but so far no customer service has been able to help me out.Any bright ideas/contacts?

The port on my Yoga has been acting up for a few weeks.  It was acting like the charging port was loose.  However, as of last night, it does not see that the charging cord is plugged in at all.  However, it is actually charging a tiny bit, very slowly.  I already attempted to discharge any static and this didn't make any difference.  The regular USB ports seem to be having some trouble recognizing that something is plugged in as well.   Definitely not too happy with the charging system on this computer.  I have already had to replace the USB cord which just stopped working about a year ago. Any suggestions?

I have a brand new Yoga 730 whose battery seems to have a serious problem. I can't get past 33% battery capacity and the system tray icon informs me that the unit is "plugged in, not charging." The 33% does not appear accurate, either, given that the unit goes dark as soon as I disconnect the power supply. I have uninstalled both of Device Manager's battery entries, allowing them to reinstall upon system restart, to no avail. It does not appear as if this battery is replaceable by mere mortals, so I don't think I am able to muck around with physical connections. All thoughts welcome...  Rick A.Pleasanton CA

When computer has 0-40% battery charge and is plugged in to power BSOD is thrown. The issue appeared the first time I turned on the computer and the problem still persistsThis is what has already been done: 1. Re-installed Windows that I got from Microsoft.2. Updated BIOS3. Laptop was sent to their service partner (again), they re+installed windows and said that the problem was due to bad drivers update. When I received the device problem still persisted.7. Shipped the device to the same repair center because they are the only ones in my country who are authorized by Lenovo to repair these series laptops. Finally, they found the problem but they can't tell what it is caused by because Lenovo doesn't let them open up the device. The only thing they are offering is to swap components one by one and to diagnose the problem this way, but if they do that it voids the Lenovo warranty. So, I asked them to write diagnostics conclusion that says the computer has a faulty hardware component.I sent diagnostics conclusion to the seller, but they will not replace the unit because I refused them to diagnose the problem swapping components one by one. I found couple cases where same model had the same problem. 6 months ago I bought a Lenovo Yoga 520 14IKBR, and now it won't charge any more while turned on. If we plug it in, the led goes white - and starts flickering orange after a few second, the computer seems to think that the power is not plugged in, and the battery doesn't charge. However, if we first switch off the computer, and then plug it in, it does charge normally. I guess therefore that there is no hardware problem, but a software issue.Somewhere on the internet we found a similar story, and according to them the solution would be a BIOS update. And indeed, the computer says there is a BIOS update waiting to be installed. However - because the computer thinks that the power is not plugged in, the BIOS update refuses to install - 'please plug in power'... So ... first question is of course if that BIOS update would indeed solve our problem. If not, is there another solution? If yes, how can we install that BIOS update safely while the computer thinks it is on battery power?
