Vista screen disappears

Q: Vista screen disappears

Hi, I am working on an Acer Aspire, Pentium D, Vista, 2GB ram. After about 45 minutes, the screen blanks out. Have to reboot to get it going again. I ran Malwarebytes, it found 19 errors. I thought this might have solved the problem, but no. I also then changed monitors, but the problem is still there. I cleaned out the case, the 2 motors were really clogged up, I thought it might be heat related. Then I ran a memory test and it stopped working again. It has 2 memory chips, I have removed one and am running the memory test again. Am I going in the right direction? Or is there any other ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On a newly constructed system (Asus P5B Deluxe, Core 2 Duo, 3 RAID 5 drives, one SATA boot disk, 2 mb RAM, Pioneer DVR-112D DVD/CD writer connected via IDE cable and jumpered to Master) system install was progressing fine until I installed a Vista Home Premium upgrade. At which point the DVD/CD device vanished (logically) from the system. It does not appear in the list of boot devices available in the startup and it does not appear in the Vista Device manager (although there is an "unknown device" attached to the ICH8/ICH8r interface). I am not presented with the "type a letter to boot from the CD" prompt. The DVD/CD does spin momentarily during boot.

My pattern is somewhat like this.

1. Had XP 64 installed on C and Vista 64 bit installed on D.
2. Formatted C and installed XP 32 bit.
3. Vista has disappeared from the boot menu.
4. I can only access XP.
5. Vista Partition is visible, but it has become 'E' in XP.

How do i fix this?

I tried google but i did not find any solution particular to my case.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I tried booting from the Vista DVD but it just refuses to. It gets stuck at the first screen.

I've just received my new PC, complete with Vista home premium.

I've checked the video drivers and they match the newest release on the Nvidia site. (GeForce 8600 GT). I installed City of Heroes, and when I launch it, once it loads, the mouse pointer disappears. The mouse still functions, you just can't see it. It's as if the mouse is operating from beneath the game's images. City of Heroes claims that I may be using old drivers, but I think they have it wrong...

I've tried monkeying around with the mouse settings and the graphics settings. Is there anything I can do here?

Hi there

I've been struggling through this for months...

I've got a Netgear WGR614 v7 wireless router connected to a cable modem. In the house, we have a basic 2yo Dell laptop, this desktop, sometimes we have my laptop and sometimes we have my PDA. The network is currently setup with WPA-TKIP and WPA2-AES and all devices connect to it fine. However, despite the other three having rock solid connections which are always on, the desktop loses its connection at random intervals. Here's what I have had so far:

Router running WEP, Linksys network card in Desktop, Vista on one hard drive, XP MCE on another. Running the desktop on XP or Vista still resulted in the connection disappearing after variable amounts of time. With XP, it could be repaired by right clicking on the system tray icon and restarting the network card. I can live with that, but I like Vista. So, running Vista I lose the connection, right click and select Diagnose and Repair. At one point I could choose Restart DHCP Client Services and this would repair things. However, to try and keep the connection continuous I played around and no longer receive this option. Instead, Diagnose and Repair doesn't give me anything that works.

At some point, I put a newer Belkin wireless card in the desktop and things appeared to improve, but they seem to be back how they were again. I've turned off the Vista firewall, as recommended on the Netgear website, but it still keeps happening. Interestingly, w... Read more

I've bumped into yet another problem, right, before I couldn't make a new partition that was 'suitable' for windows using the windows vista OS disk, it would just say whenever I made a new partition and then pressed 'next' to continue to install onto that partition it would say 'the partition does not meet the suitable criteria' so I got some help via you guys and was told to try GParted, which hooray worked in creating a new NTFS partition, which when I booted up the vista disk it found that partition and began to install onto it, and I seem to get one of these 2 errors :

One of which occurs when it does start to successfully install onto the partition and then stop in a random position : 'Windows cannot access the installation sources. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation'.

Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070570

Which these 2 errors lead me to believe that the disc is faulty, has been scratched or something as the installation usually stop at the same place sometimes goes further... But also my partition will sometimes just randomly disappear sometimes when I boot up on vista disk and won't display it?

I think I have another vista disk, should I try that or is there any way else I can resolve this problem... Read more

I don't mean to be rude but is this version legitamit?

I only ask this because recovering from an image ISO disc may have originally caused this.

Sometimes it can be corruption in your system files too
I wonder if the "Array" has something to do with this.

By the way I don't think it's the DVD !

Have you tried removing the Partition fully and installing Windows Vista clean?

My task bar seems to keep on popping up as if I hover over it and then it disappears, I sometimes keep my mouse over it and I see a little windows alert sign pop up very very quickly as if it would give a security notice and be red.

My neighbor has a desktop computer (sorry but I do not have details for it) that runs Vista. When the system starts up, everything appears normal. The desktop will display briefly and then the screen goes white. The computer continues to do some activty as the haddrive light flashes continuously. The white screen stays for 4 or 5 minutes and then the background for the desktop will display but nothing else. There are no Icons and no bar at the bottom so the Start button can not be seen. If I try to open Task Manager, nothing will display. If I try to display Desktop Settings, nothing.
If I do Ctrl Alt Del, then it will bring up the menu for that. If I choose shut down, then the desktop (and Task Manager window) will display briefly before the system shuts down. I tried to boot into Safe Mode and it got to the point of a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners but then the computer restarted.
Any suggestions as to how I can at least get to some place where I can run a scan or something? Apparently the system was working earlier today. When my neighbor launched IE, it loaded  ok and displayed the Google homepage. When he typed in to go to My Walmart, he said the screen went white for a while and then came up to the desktop background and thats where it stayed.

Whenever I access a folder containing pictures, the thumbnails for them generate -- and I can actually see them. But this only lasts for a few seconds; the thumbnails get replaced by Vista's generic landscape icon. I'm not sure when this problem started -- at first, I was not bothered by it, since I wasn't working with my photos, so I didn't pay attention to it. But it has persisted for at least a month, in all folders with pictures in them. And I've made sure that the "Show thumbnails" options were set in both "Folder Options" and "Advanced System Settings". Maybe it was from me changing the registry a long time ago? I'm not sure. So, if someone knows a key I could check to turn on/off thumbnails, that would be useful.Or, if you have any other idea how this problem occurred, I'd be really grateful. Thank you!

I have a password protected, private, Administrator account with a different name. (i.e. Both default administrator and new administrator account have password protection).

Switching of fast user switching or using the classic logon style didn't solve the problem. How can this be solved?

Hey there, new here and need some help. Here's what happened:

I opened internet explorer and typed in a google search and hit enter and it popped up a new instance of iexplorer instead of just searching in the current window as usual. Then, links I clicked on opened new windows which is not the usual setting. When I clicked in the middle of text on a web page it would highlight everything. Strange little things like that.

So, I clicked start > Turn Off > Restart and nothing happened; it just went back to the desktop. Pushed the Windows key and it wouldn't open the start menu. Finally I had to do a hard shut-off.

I waited a minute and booted the computer back up when it stopped at the login/password screen as usual. I typed the password and hit the Enter key and it just deleted the password and stayed on the page. So, I retyped it and clicked with the mouse on the green arrow button with the same result. Laptop built in mouse button did the same thing. Eventually it just froze entirely and I could not even type in the password box. Also, the little help icon on this screen would not bring anything up; it's like all the keys got remapped to different functions.

The only recent updates were the automatic Windows updates upon shutdown earlier today and the comp worked fine after booting up after that the first time.

Any thoughts?

I'm on a Dell laptop with XP Home.

EDIT: I hard shut down the comp again and let it sit for about 15 min. Booted... Read more

 Uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled IE6
o Deleted the identities and recreated them importing the mail and

 Update the computer?s BIOS
 Reformat the HDD and reinstall Media Center
o Reinstall all programs

In spite of all of this, it still randomly crashes when creating a new message

I?m confused.
Your issue isn?t described very well.

What do you mean exactly by: ?Mouse disappears right of the screen and bottom in black bars at the top??
Do you mean the touchpad or cursor?
The notebook?s touchpad supports the Gesture control feature (Multi Touch) and this feature could be configured in touchpad settings:
+Control panel -> mouse -> Device settings tab -> Settings+

There you can find also the option called ?Edge swipes? which opens the Charms bar, app Switcher, and Application bar just by moving finger from the edge of the touchpad in towards the center.

In such case the cursor would not be visible.

Lately my pointer is disappearing after i login from sleep or locked computer.

I had this problem in the past but it got solved after i restored my PC, now it came back to haunt me.
I am guessing some updates disrupted with the mouse cursor (not an expert opinion).

I've tried many things but the issue seems to be persistent.

Here are some things I've tried with no results:

Changing the pointer options (hide while you type, pointer trails, ctrl to highlight) and combinations of them.

I tried using different pointers (Black, White, Black small, etc)

Also tried using troubleshooting the software changes, sfc /scannow, clean registry with ccleaner, rebooting (many times).

It seems to be a problem with no concrete solution.

The only solution that I found is (Clt-Alt-Del) it changes the screen and the pointer appears again, if I lock the computer it is gone once more.

If somebody can help i would appreciate it.

I hope someone can help. W10 (64 bit Home) has been working OK on this laptop but recently I have been able to open the settings screen for only a micro-second. Having found people having the same problem I have tried running SFC several times, as suggested, but it says it found an issue it could not resolve.

Again following instructions on the forum I tried running DISM with an iso loaded and this hung at 40% for hours (overnight). I could not find a solution to this, but someone posted their CBS log and was given a solution to the original problem.

I do not understand what to look for in the log file, but there are several lines that mention an error. I attach the log file (zipped as it was too big for the forum), and if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Hi guys!

First question: One of the things I disliked about Windows 8 was how you had to switch between two completely different GUI environments. It felt like they were in the way of eachother.
So when I installed Windows 8 on my 'main' PC rather than on my test PC, I was happy to notice that on a dualhead setup, the desktop goes neatly on one screen and the metro screen on the other one.
This way I could keep an eye on the weather, news, social media and such while doing other stuff on my other monitor... So I thought.

Problem is, when I click on the 'start' icon on the left screen, the metro screen appears. On my right screen, the desktop stays put. That's fine. But whenever I click the desktop or any piece of software running on my right screen, the metro screen disappears and my left screen shows my desktop with taskbar.

What I'd like is to be able to manually open and close metro on my left screen, instead of it disappearing because I do something different on my right screen.

Hope you get what I mean, rather tough to explain this one.
If you don't get it, I'll make a video

A:Metro "Start screen" disappears on dualhead

Anyone? This seemed like a rather logical thing to ask .

I have looked through loads of other similar problems to mine but can't find an answer.

A couple of hours after a Windows update, I noticed my brand new laptop running very slow for something that should be a speed machine. I scanned it with antivirus, spybot, tuneup utilities, scandisk, and windows malicious removal tool. Nothing showed up!!

After a thorough scan disk effort everything seemed to work very well so I decided to make my acer restore disk just incase anything happened in the future so that i could boot form this dvd and be fine. Like a dumbass though I decided to move to a more comfortable spot which in turn managed to pull the power cable out of the laptop during the burn process. My battery was not in the machine so it killed the computer power. (pretty unbelievable when im reading this back but honestly this is what happened!!!)

Now Vista wont load up... It takes an age to get to username and password if ever, but then when i click to load it just goes to a black screen and nothing will show up. It stays like that for hours.

I just want to scrap everything on the system and start from scratch.

Its an acer computer and im pretty sure there is an option to restore laptop to factory settings but as i can't access windows i cant click on it to do this.

Ive used F8 and out of these options

Repair your computer.....None of the options worked (no restore point on the machine for some reason, and i dont have a restore disk as vista was pre load... Read more

I keep getting these weird crashes on startup. They appear to be random, I always get past the startup screen with windows (so I can still access Safe Mode etc.), but it will hang (go black) before the blue Vista symbol comes up.

When this has happened, I hold down the power, then spend 15 minutes rebooting into safe mode, running chkdsk on both drives (c and d), finding no errors, reboot and:

Reboot takes 10 straight minutes, but it finally works.

I have Hijack log, System.nfo (important.nfo) and copied the Administrative Errors from the Event viewer. \windows\minidump was empty

This worries me so I try to backup my data daily, but, sometimes forget...what is this?

Hi there all,

I really hope you guys can help me!

I bought a Samsung R700 for my son 3 years ago. He has had so many problems with this machine and has had to spend hundreds of pounds on repairs/replacements. Jacks, batteries, chargers, overheating problems and now the latest problem.

I will explain as well as I can.

On start up he could put in his password but then after clicking, the screen is black with vertical broken lines right across the screen and nothing else happens.

He can use it in safe mode for basic internet connection. He backed up his files onto an external drive and then used the Samsung recovery disc to try to restore Windows etc. It didn't work. Still exactly as before.

I found out online that there have been defects with the NVidia graphics card he has, the 8400. I rolled back the driver to an earlier one and then managed to start up in normal mode but then all the critical error messages started coming up.

I didn't realise this was a malware at the time and started following it's instructions for fixing the errors. It said 6 were fixed and 5 were not. I got suspicious when it said I could purchase the fix and googled it then of course arrived on your forum.

I cannot get access to internet explorer on the computer so will have to download any removal tools to my own computer first. I have enabled Windows firewall but cannot enable Defender and there is no antivirus now and I cannot find any programs or IE so cannot download an an... Read more

Im currently useing a Toshiba L305 satalite laptop Satellite L305-S5945, ive been useing it for about a year and i havent had a problem with it till now, im running windows vista service pack 2. The OS is the same that came preinstalled (i had installed win 7 but my trial ran out on it so i used my factory reset disk to restore the laptop back to the way it was when purchased), i would perfer to not have to use the factory reset disk but if i cant solve the problem then i will have to give that a try. The issue started while i was browseing the web and i got blue screen. The lap top had been working fine up till then, i had had a power serge at about the same time im not sure if thats a coincidence or not here is what my blue screen says.

A:Windows vista Blue screen [Moved from Vista/7]

STOP 0xA is usually a driver issue. As such I'd suggest 2 (well, actually 3) things:

1) Please follow the directions here for giving us some more info about this issue: http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ns-452654.html

2) While waiting for a reply, run Driver Verifier according to these directions. It may not be necessary, but if it is it'll give you a headstart on it.:

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
NOTE: You can use Low Resource Simulation if you'd like. From my limited exp... Read more

Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...
