System recovery for xp deleted my personal files on desktop, can I recover them?

Q: System recovery for xp deleted my personal files on desktop, can I recover them?

After experiencing an error with windows, it wouldn't start up and said I was missing the hal.dll files, I fired up the windows recovery program. It worked like a charm, replaced windows and the hal.dll file, however all my folders with docs and pictures on the desktop that were there previously (which accumulated over years) were not there anymore. Is there any way to recover these missing folder and files? They weren't saved on the c: directly but only on the desktop. I tried system restore but it said there were no system recovery points I could recover from.
Does windows make a backup of these desktop files before it deletes them?
Please help anyone, thanks!

Preferred Solution: System recovery for xp deleted my personal files on desktop, can I recover them?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If the computer hasn't been used much since the recovery most of your files will be intact.

The tricky bit is getting them back. The only real way to retrieve your data is to remove the hard drive, plug it into another computer as a second drive and run a piece if recovery software over it.

The first two links are to free recovery software, the third is paid for - this one does work very well.

Dear All,

My colleague mistakenly deleted all the file from the Windows 7 recovery drive, drive is still there and nothing have been copied in that drive after deleting the recovery files. Machine is HP Probook 4530s. Is there any way to restore the windows 7 recovery reset the system to its factory settings?

Thanks in advance

A:Recover Deleted Windows 7 Recovery Files from Recovery Drive

You might be able to use a free recovery tool like Recuva or MiniTool Partition Wizard. But there are no guarantees that all deleted files will be recovered or that they will be in a usable condition.

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

MiniTool Partition Recovery

It may be safer to contact HP support and buy a set of recovery disks for your particular machine. I'm taking a guess that you are in India?

I have a Dell inspiron 6400 that has a clean install of XP from the OS disc. The personal files were saved on a usb flash drive. I don't know a lot about why XP needed to be reinstalled just that it was. When I left click on the flash drive in 'my computer', it shows two files:
$WIN_NT$.~BT and $WIN_NT$.~LS. I'm not sure what to do at this point. How do I extract the files to restore all of their personal data, programs etc. Supposedly this was supposed to be an exact copy of everything on her computer. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank You

How did you backup the files? If you used a Backup Program, then you need to reinstall the backup program and use it's restore feature to restore your files.
If you had chose to Drag and Drop your files to the Flash drive, (ex) My Documents, Desktop, and Favorites. you could have just dragged and dropped them back to the original place.

Hi

I have window 8 pro 64 bit machine. I had to hardboot the system due to hang. After the hardboot i was not able to reboot again. I did start up repair and finally i did a system restore. The system restore was succesfull but when i logged in i lost my personla files saved inside C drive and also lost the Pst files. Now all the application has issue. Like autocad, photoshop.

I used some recovery software to recover the files. But most of the files are lost.

Request help to get the data.

Thanks

A:System Restore Deleted Files Personal file

System restore shouldnt touch your personal files unless they were saved on the c drive outside of your personal directory.

You have pretty much already done what you can do to restore the files you are missing. If you cant find them it is likely because the data has already been overwritten by something else and is now irretrievable. You might be able to use a program like Recuva or GetDataBack to get the rest of it, but I would say that its doubtful.

Is backup any good for that, for going back to a previous state of one's operating system to recover a limited number of files that are missing? If so, how do you do that?

My only backup is My Documents on Google Drive. More on the mess I find myself in at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/1111923-looks-like-files-may-have.html#post8800806

A:Anybody with experience using backup to recover deleted files, not whole system?

It depends on what did the backup. With Acronis and most other imagers, you can mount the backup as a drive and get any files you want that way.

But, if the files you want are more recent, there may be multiple shadow copies of those previous files right on your hard drive. You can use Previous Version on the property sheet of a file or folder. Or you can mount a restore point as a drive and get files that way using System Restore Explorer.

WinMount is a program that can mount just about anything mountable to allow access to files.

Every one swears by the System restore feature of Windows. Be it any instance, where we have accidentally closed a file before saving, or files got deleted or inaccessible we run this system restore which creates checkpoints automatically or manually and restores the system back to the settings of that previous date.
This feature is very popular and is of much utility. I tried to update to Vista SP1 on an older Sony Vaio and consequently hit a brick wall with a corrupted volume. I've tried a TON of tips/tricks from various forums which included Startup Repair and various command line options. NONE worked and I am forced to use the Sony Vaio recovery discs. Will this delete any/all personal files already on the drive, or will they get shoved in a folder somewhere?

A:Will Vista/Vaio system recovery discs delete personal files?

The factory recovery process will overwrite and destroy everything that's currently on the C: drive. That's why you are supposed to keep backups of all your personal files on a separate drive or on optical discs while you are able to do so, and not wait until disaster strikes which prevents you from copying anything.

I've got a problem.

The motherboard on my laptop died and regardless of support contracts, Lenovo says it can't repair the mother board for nearly 3 weeks. If I wait that long I'll be unemployed.

I need to get files that are on my drive (which is 32-bit Vista). These are a combination offline mail files, desktop files and such all under my user folder.

I have spare laptop (different model, etc.) which has Vista, but when I've tried to access files from one Vista disk on another machine (in an external USB device) I've always gotten access denied messages.

Is there some way that by providing passwords or accounts/passwords for my account on this drive (when it was in my broken laptop) that I can get these files on my working laptop?

It seems to me that I ought to be able to provide some sort of credentials to do this. I can't just put the drive into my working laptop. Vista fails as it boots (probably due to drivers and such).

Is there a tool, hack or something I can use if this isn't support in Vista? I'm looking for any options available.

A:Need to recover personal files from one Vista system on another Vista system

There is a SATA/IDE to USB connector that you could use to recover the information on your old laptops HDD. You can hook up that HDD to your working laptop and recover the files that way.

If you have one, great use it. If not ill provide a link to one that i like to use that works.

Ok so I apologize in advance if this story is a bit long, and horrifying (actually it's probably entertaining xD). I purchased the Lenovo y510p gaming laptop on back on July 14th 2014. I got the laptop, and it just didn't work for me. It didn't play the games I wanted it to, it had overheating issues, the keyboard had a really sharp edge making typing uncomfortable as well. After installing Sony Vegas and Avast, and just shifting some of my personal photos/music over, I made a backup of the laptop using the OneKey Recovery software. This backup was made to one of my 500GB external hard drives. So I then decided that I just didn't like the laptop, and it was time to return it. I called Newegg, and got my RMA all ready to go. Because I had lot of my personal files and programs, I decided the fastest way to delete everything would be to use the OneKey Recovery by Lenovo, and do a factory reset. At the time, I didn't think anything of this then simply putting the laptop back to exactly how I got it. I even booted it up after the factory reset, and it looked just like the first day I got it. Fast forward 2 weeks, and my RMA is denied from Newegg:   Your RMA (RMA Number: 60470880) return was received and sent to our Inspections Department for closer examination. 34-313-740 NB LENOVO IDEAPAD Y510P 59406636 RTSystem has been modified/altered original manufacturers operating system has been removed cannot access restore partition, this voids Newegg w... A:How to recover deleted "Recovery Partition"

If you only used One Key Recovery by Lenovo, it should not delete the partition. (I hope you did not format the whole system) Once you receive the laptop, you can check if this partition still exists in Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Disk Management. It should show some drives, other than the C: , D: and the SSD (if you have). Those drives are the recovery partitions. I can post a sample screenshot in the evening. Sadly, I do not know any way to recover that partition. As I have seen on this forum several people who lost that partition could not roll back their laptop to original settings without a recovery drive (which is different from a recovery backup).

A:All Personal files deleted, need help recovering

The problem is, if the location where the data is you want to recover has been written over, during the restore, its not accessible.
With the restore to factory settings, many user data areas have already been overwritten.

I used Recuva one time to try and recover some user files after an OS corruption (caused by a motherboard failure) and my backup software failed me (Acronis at the time) would not restore. I did not do anything to the drive. Some of my user files were recoverable and some were not. I just counted myself lucky for the ones I did recover.

But, this is also a lesson on why backups are needed. Not for IF they will ever be needed, but for WHEN they are needed.

I have since dumped Acronis True Image and moved on to Macrium Reflect for backups and no more problems with restoring.

On one of my laptops I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. Usually when I upgrade it automatically creates a Windows.Old folder in my C Drive where I can access all my files from before the upgrade. But this time there was no Windows.Old folder. So I downloaded and ran a file recovery program...it found 0 old deleted files. I ran that same program on a different laptop and it worked fine. So where could the deleted files have went and how can I access them?

A:Can't Recover Deleted Files

Upgrades do not delete any files. They would be in the same location as they were when you left them.

If you did not upgrade, but installed a fresh copy of 7, the files are most likely underneath the OS and lost. The installation of the OS uses about twice the drive space that the final installation uses, so everything would have been written over.

i tried a system restore but it wouldnt give me back my photos.. and then ended up somehow loosing all my system restore poins after that..???

Today I deleted sixteen files that I needed - they weren't sent to the recycle bin as I usually hold down shift and delete together so I don't have to empty the recycle bin often. I know there are many file recovery programs available that you have to pay for, but as I only need to recover around 16 files I was wondering if any of you knew about a deleted file recovery program which was free, even if it was for a limited time. I tried downloading some demos but they either only allowed small files to be recovered or didn't let you recover any files without paying.

The files I deleted were no more than 100k/b, and I use Windows 98 SE. Anybody know of any recover deleted file programs that would help me?

A:Recover deleted files

It's possible the filles may still be there. First try to undelete in your recycle bin. If that's a no go, there are a few commercial recovery programs out there. The only way you can possibily undelete files that have already been deleted in the recycle bin is using such a program provided the files have not been overwritten. If you write something to the same disk it doesn't necessarily mean your deleted files have been overwritten.
If a file recovery program doesn't work, they're gone forever.

ALLWAYS back up! :hotbounce

Hi,

Recently I had to recover Deleted files from Recycle Bin using Handy Recovery software.

I often use, Disk clean and Defrag. Update windows, driver etc.

Question: When I recovered deleted files, I got some very old files deleted more than 3 or 4 months ago. I wonder why they were in the computer? Why they did not delete till now?

Thank you
Ari

A:How come recover deleted files?

Because when a HDD Stores files it stores it Physically and Magnetically - The only way to secure delete something without it being recoverable is to write Data over. your computer may have not Written any data over those files yet

Hope This Helps,
Josh

A:Recover deleted files?

Did he deleted them from Recycle Bin too? Because if not, you can found them there, just right-click on your file and then, restore.
Other solution I don't know, only if System Restore can do something, but I'm not sure.

A:how to recover deleted files

Do a Google search for "File Recovery" and you will find hundreds (actually millions) of links to software that will do what you want. Bear in mind, though, a hard disk that has been in constant use (reading and writing) will have over-written many of the files (or parts of the files) and those will not be recoverable.

Oye. Where to start. I had a problem on my comptuer, so I had to reinstall XP. All is well. I have "roaming profiles" set up on a "server" [really is just my profile on a XP Pro machine w/ a big hard drive]. They are on their own partition. I set my new install machine profile point to the place where it should be. I wanted to use it right away and not wait for it to copy the 12gb of My Documents to my computer at the moment, so I moved them to a different folder. I logged on, and did what I wanted to do. Then I moved My Documents back to the profile folder on the server. Logged off of my computer and logged back on. My Documents is GONE! Apparently, since when I logged on there wasn't a My Documents, and when I logged off, it was there, Windows thought it would get rid of it...and it did. I tried several data recovery programs, and only one was able to recover some of my files, but about 90% of them are useless. A document is just a bunch of ??Ya94~9??A ect ect. Pictures are unreadable, music is corrupt. I'm very organized, and have everything set up into folders and sub-folders upon sub-folders ect. I'd like to not have to find out where everything goes, but if all else fails, I guess I could. Its about 12gb, and if there is any way of getting it back, I'd GREATLY appreciate it. I called a guy who does this for a living, $500 flat rate, and if successsful $100/gb. It's not worth that much, but it has a LOT of value ... Read more

My non-technical brother bought an external hard drive then "synched" that drive to a folder on his internal hard drive that held (of course) all of the pictures of the kids. He claims he then deleted the folder from his internal hard drive and everything was gone from his external hard drive. Nothing in the recycle bin either.

I've never used an external hard drive, so I don't know if any of what he's saying even makes sense, but the bottom line is that he would like to get out of the doghouse and get the pictures back. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I've heard that no file is ever really erased from your hard drive its really just a matter of how much you want to pay to get it back.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Hello,

I accidentally deleted a folder that has many files in my portable drive. They are not in the recycle bin as I set it for immediately deletion. So I purchased a data recovery program online and it found the deleted files. When I restored and opened the files, they were corrupted. Is there a reliable program that can recover the files efficiently? The Internet has so many programs and I don't know which to pick.

Many thanks.

A:How do I recover deleted files?

Has anything been copied onto the drive since the deletion? If it has, the locations where the deleted files were may have been overwritten by new files. If this has happened, recovered files will be corrupt, and no recovery software will be able to recover them correctly.

If nothing has been transferred to the drive since the folder was deleted, then it's a disappointment that paid software fails to recover them. Well-regarded recovery programs include Recuva, PcInspector and GetDataBack (paid). Other posters may have other recommendations from their experience.

Not sure if I am in the right forum. Point me in the right direction if not. The OS is Vista Business.

I need to recover deleted files from the hard drive. Someone suggested Recuva, which is a free recovery tool, but my scan says its not safe. Then i found StellarPhoenixWindowsDataRecovery, which is free download until you actually tell it to recover the file, then you have to buy it. This is the first time I had to use this type of tool.

Can you give me input and recommendations as to recovery tools that actually work, both free and paid for? I prefer free since I may not ever need to do it again. If I have to pay, I have to pay.

A:Need to recover deleted files

I have used Recuva in the past with no problems.

Hello cdrdannya. If the deleted files were not removed through a systems recovery then you could try this.

Hello
I used to have almost an entire hard drive (50 gb) worth of .wmv files (ripped my dvd collection). I had to delete all of it since I thought I would need the space for other files. That turned out not to be necessary so now I'm wondering if there is a way to get that data back. The entire folder was deleted - I think Windows said it was too big to put in the bin. I did not do any other work on that drive since.

I tried using some popular recovery programs: Recuva, Undelete plus, restore but they don't seem to get a trace of the files. Instead they display some bizzare files which appear to be from a previous windows instalation. Now I find it unlikely that the entire collection of over 100 hundred files would just dissappear without a trace. So maybe I'm doing something wrong or using the wrong software? I'd appreciate a hand.

edit: if you know about affordable commercial software that would do the job feel free to recommend

I'm running windowsXP professional, I've deleted a folder from documents and settings/unknown user.

my logitech webcam had saved all its data files in there. Is there any way to recover the files. The recycle bin has been emptied already before I realized what I lost.
I've tried a utility called "drive rescue" , It found some of the files but not many and the jpg files that it recovered are not recognized as pictures, just get binary data. The folder was over 3.5 gigs, I know, I know, I'm a bonehead for not being more careful. I should never drink and pute.
Does anyone know of any better utility that can go into the free space and recover everything? I remember using Norton Utility when it was a DOS utility years ago. I hated NU 3.0 for windows.

There are many programs out there that profess to recover such files and may do the job, however most if not all are costly.
Here is a list of many of them. Some allow you do download and try in a view mode to see if the files are recoverable before you buy. I am also moving this thread to WinXP with a subject change so others may spot the problem and maybe have a better suggestion.
Here is the listing I mentioned.

Hi,I've tried to recover deleted files by going back to earlier version. Computer restarted then goes to blue screen with-"Bitlocker .enter the recovery key to get going again"
Have gone to the website they list but it tells me there isn't a recovery key!!! Pls help?-

A:win 8.1 pro - I'm locked out - tried to recover deleted files

If you don't have the Bitlocker recovery key or know who does then you are out of luck. Bitlocker is drive encryption, at some point you or potentially your organization if this is a company computer encrypted yoru drive for security. On that note, if this is a company or school device then return it to them and they likely have the recovery key to restore access to the drive/system.
