Setting BIOS options remotely

Q: Setting BIOS options remotely

I have roughly 100 M920q's that I want to set up with an identical BIOS config. Whilst I could do them all manually, this will take a significant amount of time.I looked at the Lenovo BIOS Config Tool, but this doesn't seem to apply settings from the config files to any of the several machine models I tried.I then went to look at the Windows BIOS Setting tool. The first tool; SRWIN.exe (& x64 version) errors out with the followingStartService Error: 5
CreateFile Error: 2
Unable to get bios driver handle. The second tool CFGWIN.exe (& x64 version) works but doesn't provide the same level of functionality as the first tool. Please, could someone help me out, as I don't want to have to manually set ~100 PCs.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

How can I change the WINS settings on WIN2k workstations remotely? Settcpipparams.exe does not work in 2k and the setnet.exe must have all information for the network in an answer file, not all of our users have the same network settings. Our LAN folks in their infinite wisdom changed the WINS servers without notifying anyone, now we are in crisis mode to fix all users.

Good afternoon everyone,

Situation:
Have 60 Win2k pc's in our department - these include 2 Student PC Labs and then faculty PC's. Everyone will be printing to different printers. I am going to set up a print server and want to be able to configure all PC's remotely with the correct network printers.

This way I can set up the 2 labs to print to the network printers located in the respective labs and faculty will print to a printer in our main office. I also do not want to include anything in the logon scripts, as we do not use them here. Ideally I want each PC set up with the correct network printer, no matter who logs on, as the lab PC's have numerous different students logging on to them daily.

I came across the following command line utility:

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry

With the proper switches, I have been able to set up a network printer while logged onto that PC, but can not figure out a way to run this command and have it map the network printer on a remote PC.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Pete

If you have a print server, go into "add printers" then click on the print server, then click on the printer you want to install for that particular machine.

Hello,

I'm currently looking for a way to change all of our Laptop & Workstation (Approx 250+ machines) BIOS passwords using a remote tool if possible. The majority of laptops are Latitude and the workstations OptiPlex although most of the laptops have BitLocker activated.
We also use Empirum software to push out software if this would be of any help.

I have been looking around and into using the Dell Client Configuration Utility and also the OpenManage tool although I'm not too sure if they would work for us due to us using BitLocker.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have some strong IT Background and had a career in the IT Field installing networks for the past 3 years.  That being said this problem has me completely stumped and I have no clue how to reconfigure this machine back to normal.

It appears that the Virus or Malware is embedded within the high ram.  Performing memory dumps, pulling the RAM and CMOS for 24 - 36 hours,  has yielded no different results.  I have tried the following in addition:

Mem Wipe software utilities
Reinstall Windows via Windows 7 Home Disk (purchased from a retail store)
Reinstall Windows via USB Drive containing Windows 7 Pro
Reinstall Windows from a completely different image created using Norton Ghost (base image was Sysprep for any random machine)
Reinstall Windows from another unique image created with Acronis (base image was also sysprepped for any machine)
Used Motherboard CD to reinstall drivers each time.
Machine has Norton 360 on it.
Used WipeDrive CD to clear HD of all data and attempted to reinstall windows.

The last bit of info - What I am experiencing on this machine is also affected any device plugged into my network.  I have a kindle (HD 7), windows phone (Nokia Lumi 1020), and 3 Windows Desktops.
These all show the same symptoms.

Symptoms:

Hi. I have been Googling this, but haven't been able to find the information I need. Maybe someone can help here?

I want the option to open a DVD/CD in Windows Explorer to show on the Autoplay option window that appears when I insert a disc into the drive. I am asked every time I put in a disc, which is what I want; the option is there in the configuration settings, but it doesn't appear in the autoplay window.. See screenshots.

I can remove the Open in Windows Media Player option if only four items will show (but how??)

Thanks!

Martin

A:Setting Autoplay options

I just discovered that if I insert a DVD-RW with video files on it, I get the above 'annoyance'. If the same DVD-RW has jpegs on it, I get a different autoplay window open, with different options (including 'Open with Windows Explorer)> I'd thought (clearly wrongly) the action was media dependent, not as to what was on the disc.

So how do I get the Windows Explorer option for a disc with .VOB files on it?

Thanks again.

In the Dell XPS 13 (9360). Using the latest BIOS 1.3.2 (but the old previous BIOS version was the same).

If you go to the "Fn Lock Options" under BIOS, there are 2 options, they are listed as:
Lock Mode Disable/Standard   = The F1-12 Keys behave as function keys
Lock Mode Enable/Secondary = The F1-12 Keys control the secondary functions.

These options are Swapped. If you disable the "Fn Lock" and set the mode to "Lock Mode Disable/Standard", log into Windows, and Press F1, it will then MUTE the system. Even though it should act like an "F1" Key.
If you go back into BIOS, set the mode to "Lock Mode Enabled/Secondary", log into the system and Press F1, then the Help comes up.

The options are swapped on these two configure options. Please update the text in the BIOS to match the appropriate configuration. Thanks. I've included a ScreenShot of the BIOS options. "Fn Lock" does do what it describes (disables Fn-Esc). Doesn't matter if u turn this on or off. If you have it set up as I do below, the Fn Keys are set for the proper Function (F1-F12) operation. However, the text says it should do its secondary functions in this mode.

As I bought my laptop when I was living abroad, it has an American (I suppose) style keyboard, where (for example) the number keys 1 to 5 in Caps are marked (and produce the symbols) ! @ # $ %. Given that the laptop sits on the desk mostly, I find it a lot easier when doing emails or whatever to use a USB keyboard on my lap, but this has a UK layout, where the same keys in Caps are marked ! " ? $ % ... but produce the same symbols as the first example (laptop's own keyboard).

I don't suppose there is any way to get Windows to recognise the two different keyboard layouts, so that the USB one produces the symbols depicted on the keys? Can I remap it without affecting the laptop one? Can't work out how, if so.

Thanks.

I recently picked up a old HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one printer at a yard sale for 10 bucks in great condition. Problem is, it was missing all documentation and driver CD. Fortunately, HP included "in-OS" drivers for Win 7, so I was able to set it up over USB very easily. But now I'm trying to get it up and running with wireless printing, which it supports on XP, but isn't perfectly ported to 7.

Following the advice from the 4th comment on Re: HP PSC 2510 Photostmart drivers for WIndows 7 - Page 4 - HP Support Forum, I was able to connect to it via my wifi network when I plug an Ethernet cable into the printer.

Now, this works, but being a huge nerd, I think it'd be even better if I could set the printer up to be completely wireless. I'm not much of an expert on the finer workings of wireless connections, but I think it's possible to do this with an ad hoc netwrok. But I can't find any instructions for doing this on 7. Closest thing I found was this page with instructionsfor XP, which I was unable to follow on 7.

Since the printer has an on-screen option to enable or disable the "wireless radio" which can only be turned on when the ethernet cable is unplugged, I assume this functionality is to broadcast the "hpsetup" ad hoc network from the printer without it being connected to a router (since I don't think it can connect to an actual wifi network wirelessly; but if it can, it'd be great to know how to do that too!). But even when I do... Read more

A:Options for setting up a wireless printer

Instructions for creating an ad hoc network in Windows 7 can be found here:
Windows 7: How to Create an Ad Hoc Network | kombitz.com

I also wonder if maybe it has anything to do with encryption?
It seems that with the linkout you have provided with instructions
for setting this up in XP describes setting up WEP encryption connection
through the HP setup page. Wondering if the device you are making the
ethernet connection to is handing the printer an IP by checking that option in
the setup through Win7 (Automatically obtain IP address therefore it should) but check if the router is also using
WEP encyption which whilst reading the documentation seemed to be required for the printer.

Is that making sense! I'd start with that first

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

Does ANYONE know what I can do to set my folders the way I want them and retain the settings?

.windows 7.fresh out of the box, first time being turned on, whats the VERY first step towards having the same options applied to ALL folders and seeing the same options the second/third time you use windows explorer?

All previous versions gave us a list of steps to set folder options......we'd go through the steps.....youre options might be fine ...........now, but the next time you use windows explorer, your options are......not there.
Nobody ever knew how to permanently set folder options in all previous windows versions.

is it the same with windows 7

do we still have to change options on each folder that we need to?
each time we use that folder?

I haven't yet tried and I'm not touchin' folder options untill i see what you folks have to say.

After using the RTM build for about a week with no issues, the option to open a folder in the same window when clicked, is no longer working properly.

Now, when clicked, all folders are opening up in a new window and this is very annoying! I havent changed any settings and the folder options are still set correctly. I have tried changing the folder options to see if it would change this behaviour but it did not. What is really strange is that this also happened on my first install of Vista RTM before reinstalling this copy, after about the same time of usage-about 1 week.

Has anybody ran into this or know what is happening? I havent installed any new hardware or software and I havent tried any repairs or recovery yet. I wanted to ask before I started poking around and making any changes in the OS.

Hi, I have xp home eddition with 4 user accounts. 2 accounts work fine the other 2 are having problems.

The desktop settings will not change. You can click what you want and hit apply but changes will not be made and when you open them up again they are back to where they were (which is different to what they should be).

Same for internet options. They have gone to 'never dial a connection' also cannot change home page etc. In the two problem accounts the internet is inaccessable.

Also when you click 'start' button the whole left hand column is blank.

The whole appearance of the accounts is like half xp style and half classic windows style.

I have done a sytem restore (that wont work) says no changes have been made, run adaware and spybot plus avg virus scan (all were updated).

The 2 working accounts are working perfectly!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I wont be able to try out all the helpful information you are going to give me until tomorrow night.

I hope someone can help.

Here's my problem with Vista.

When I go into any folder for the first time, it comes up with a set of random things to sort the folders by, and random view settings.

I want every folder to have the "details" view by default. Also, I want the tabs "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" that I can click on to sort these, with "Type" being the default selected one.

This is how I had things in WinXP. All I had to do was click "Apply to folders" in the folder options. I do this in Vista, also, I do have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked. Yet it makes up a random set of view settings for any folder I haven't manually set myself.

So, how do I make Windows Vista stop coming up with random view settings for folders? When I click on a folder of pictures I still want it in "Details" view, with "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" tabs. With "Type" selected as the default to sort by.

Yet, it appears in "Large Icons" view, with "Date Taken", "Tags", "Size", and "Rating" as the only sort by options.

How do I stop this madness?

Where can I find an operating manual for the HP branded motherboard? My Oct. 2016 (build date) Omen 870-030vx desktop has 4x SATA connectors on the MB (Z170 chipset).  It has a 512gig SSD boot drive attached to SATA#1. I attached 2x 6gig HDDs to SATA#3 and #4 thinking that HDDs are usually connected in pairs for RAID such that channel 1 would be SATA#1&#2 and channel 2 would be SATA#3 & #4. The BIOS set up lets you change from AHCI mode to RAID but it never gives you an option to choose which set of HDDs you want to place in the array - nor does it have an option to choose RAID "0" or RAID "1", etc. If RAID is choosen in the BIOS then the computer fails to boot.  What have I done wrong here?

Hi: You can't just switch the controller settings without making some changes in the OS registry, or the OS will not boot. Please see this related thread.  Should be the same for W10. https://communities.intel.com/thread/28709 Unfortunately, I have no idea where you would find a manual for the motherboard.  The only guides available will be on the support page for your PC. You may be able to use this general guide for how to set up a RAID array...starting on page 15 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03519601

I need to know how to change the boot order in the BIOS. I figured out how to get into it, now I can't decipher how to change the boot order.

I run a Toshiba Satellite 3000-S353 model - Phoenix BIOS

I have a constant restart problem and can't get into Windows at all. I'm trying to load the setup from the floppy disk drive and I need to know how to get it to boot from the floppy!

I don't have the WinXP CD so that's why I'm doing it this way.

I'd really appreciate any help here! I'm freaking out!

Have you ever seen a BIOS that has absolutely no boot options other than the internal disk.

I bought this little 11.6" Asus X205TA 1.0 laptop which is actually a handy little device. It obviously has no optical drive but 2 USB ports. But the temporary and permanent boot order does only allow booting from the internal disk. I am really stuck if I want to e.g. recover from a Macrium image.

I guess I will have to make my own refresh images. And even those I can only use as long as the machine functions. Any other ideas.

A:BIOS with no boot options

That's a new one on me, Wolfgang. Seems your only option is something like Paragon Migrate and a spare SSD to swap in case of catastrophe.

Hello all,new user here !

I have a quick question for y'all.I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L ( rev. 2.0 ) mobo, and a WD 500GB Sata-II HDD,and i was wondering what happens if i enable the following options in my bios because they are on disabled right now

SATA AHCI Mode [Disabled]
SATA Port0-1 Native Mode [Disabled]
My HDD is recognized as SATA-II by HD Tune though the speeds of my HDD are kinda slowish 30mb/sec,but anyway my main question is: Is it ok if i leave them disabled or its better to have them enabled? I'm planning on buying another SATA-II HDD and im curious of these settings.

A:A question regarding some options in my bios !

Welcome!

I don't know about the second option, but I know the first. See this tutorial before changing anything: AHCI : Enable in Windows 7 / Vista

Good luck!

I have found a z drive on my computer I didn't put there I want to format my harddrive and reinstall windows, but I can't enter any of my bios options they are locked out

A:cant change bios options

Exodus777, welcome to the forum. HP limits the amount of BIOS settings that can be changed.  You can use the Recovery media that you made to Reset the computer.  Also, you could use the Disk Management to extend the partition next to Z.
