Lost all of my icons and task bars in windows XP - not sure how to proceed...

Q: Lost all of my icons and task bars in windows XP - not sure how to proceed...

This is my dads computer, and he refuses to let go of XP, so I am trying to help him. I am going to get him windows 10 in the near future, but until then...
Booting the computer leads to a blank window XP screen, no task bars and no icons, just a green meadow...
- The first time, I tried to use ALT/CTRL/DEL to run a new task explorer.exe (after ending the task of the other explorer.exe) and this did nothing. It did not return the icons- I tried to boot to safe mode and a RESTORE point, but it keeps freezing or crashing when I try- have tried several times now- After many reboot`s, now ALT/CTRL/DEL does not even work on the desktop blank canvas.- Last working configuration does not work when booting - still blank canvas, no icons- SAFE MODE works and all the icons are available (slow as can be though)
As it stands, I can only get to SAFE mode, and even there it is touch and go.
Where should I go from here? Any ideas or steps I could take to try and fix this thing? I think I have an XP cd somewhere but probably scratched to heck.

Preferred Solution: Lost all of my icons and task bars in windows XP - not sure how to proceed...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there any important personal data still on the computer?
What is the make and model of the computer?
I am assuming you have another computer available to burn a file to disk, correct?

I am at whits end trying to get my computer to work. I recently had problems logging in to facebook and yahoo mail. Upon entering name and password the browser window would simply close. I rebooted as we sometimes have problems with the modem. I did so and upon rebot received black screen of death so I restarted again and this time got to my user screen and clicked my icon, the only choice on my computer (one user). It took me to desk top which was only the picture. No icons, no tool bars or start menu. No right click, no mouse icon. Now my computer is stuck in this mode both in regular use and safe mode. Must be manually turned off. Nothing is running after a point as in I don't hear my tower running as if it has finished loading start up so I do not believe its bogged down either.

Several days earlier I removed AdAware and Bulldog security system from my computer. Bulldog was a trial that had ended and I wanted to stop any other chances of conflict with Spybot. I also removed severial other old games, google tool bar and what appeared to be Adobe flash components missing files using the remove programs menu. All this after receiving notices that I needed to install Adobe flash 10 ActiveX notes on several sites including facebook. I tried down loading the ActiveX from several sites including Adobe's home page which either bogged down computer or crashed my browser window. After hours of trying to figure it out and many attemps including sucessfully dow... Read more

I am perplexed. I have Windows ME, and I went to the Speigel site (that's when it happened). Since I left the site, I lost all icons for my programs in the left side of my task bar, i.e., Outlook Express, scanner icon, etc. I've re-booted my computer to no avail. Most of the programs are still in my Program File list from Start, but this is not normal. Also, I received an error message before this happened that my system was low on resources. Normally, at start-up my system resources are at 82%......? I'm at a loss here. How can I get back my icons? Why did they go away? I don't even have the icon for Outlook Express or Internet Explorer - Thanks!

right-click on your taskbar and go to the toolbars submenu -- if quicklaunch isn't checked, check it.

I have had a couple problems, and you guys are GREAT! I have been losing my icons and task bar. I run XP, with f-secure and ewido. I can get to programs through task manager, and shut down that way, but it is really inconvenient. I get a pop up which say Windows Explorer has to shut down--send error report, etc., then my icons and task bar leave. Sometimes it happens when I try to go to my control panel, other times it seems to be random. Any suggestions?

I have a Toshiba Satallite with Windows 7 installed. I now have no start button, windows task bar and all of my desktop icons have gone missing.

When I restart the laptop (via CTRL + ALT + DEL) I see all of the missing items listed for about 10 seconds...then they all disappear. What I have left is my personalised background image (my cute 2 month old nephew with my sunglasses) and a windows explorer window. Nothing else.

So far I have managed to access my Virus protection software (AVG) and run a scan. It didn't find anything. I ran my spyware application (Spybot Search and Destroy) again nothing.

Can anyone give me any ideas on what I can do to get my laptop back to a usable state?

Many thanks!

This is a common BUG in windows xp.
If you are talking about QUICK LAUNCH ICONS
then restore them as follows
1. right click on the taskbar.
2. Select Toolbars.
3.CHeck if QUICK LAUNCH is unticked.
if unticked,then tick it.
OR IF you are talking about Taskbar Icons..

This is on my wife's work computer. When I start the computer I don't get my task bar or desktop icons.
I haven't lost any programs or files but the only way to access them is by going to the task manager and entering a task.
I have tried virus scans with no results of any found infection.
I have also tried used system restore in msconfig with no luck
Is this fatal and do I have to back everything up and reinstall XP?

A:Lost icons and task bar and start

When you get into Windows, hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete.

Select "Task Manager."

Under Applications(tab), select "New Task."

Type in "explorer.exe" and hit Enter.

Assuming that brought back some of the essentials, perform a System Restore.

Hi all:
I just reinstalled Win 7 Family Premium 64-bit on my computer after running into some problems. Everything seemed to load OK, but after I woke it from hibernation, all I had was the wallpaper. The start button, task bar and icons were gone and when I gave it the three-finger salute, all I got was the black screen. It disappeared after I hit the esc key.
When I right-click the mouse, I get the dialogue box. I can get to the desktop gadgets, but not screen resolution or personalize.
If I recall correctly, I had the same problem the first time I loaded Windows 7 and it turned out the computer had set my only monitor as the second monitor and everything was on the monitor I didn't have. Problem is, I forgot what I was told as to how to fix this.
Does anyone out there have any idea how to get to the screen resolution box to change this?

I started my PC today and found my screen icons to have vertical black bars around them, this also affects my mouse pointer as shown in these images:

I have tried deleting the icon cache folder and rebooting without success. I did notice that while the pc was rebooting the screen was filled with lots of small blue squares.

I am running XP Pro, AMD XP3200 cpu, Radeon 9800 Pro graphics, 1 GB Ram, Creative x-fi sound card and SATA hard drives.

I can see no logical reason why this could have happened, does anyone have any ideas how to fix it, as I have not recently upgraded any drivers etc.

Thanks, Ian Dennis.

This is Floridana. My Operating System is Windows XP.

I had three icons on the left side of the Task Bar next to the START button that allowed me to quick-start (1) my desktop, (2) the internet and (3) my e-mail. It was always available at the bottom of the monitor. Occasionally, in the past, I have changed the programs I wanted there by deleting them and dragging down the ones that I wanted....very simple. Now, all three are gone and when I try to drag one down, it won't stay. I get the symbol of a circle with a line through it.

Currently whatever is on my computer won't let me access Windows Update. The last updates I would have had are a few days ago using automatic updating.

I first had a problem when i opened an old video file and the computer tried opening Limewire (I had previously removed it from my system). Soon I lost my Notification area Icons and couldnt open Task Manager. I got an error on a dll called hyiobokr.dll in the Windows\System32 directory.

Very soon popups for Vista Antivirus and Spybot Activescan showed up, with others as well. All these were closed without accessing anything on them.

I performed the actions in your first five steps, I now have the Notification Items back and can call up Task Manager. I still have random popups occurring when I am using the web browser and even when I am not using it. I use IE 7 and Firefox 3.

Hello, TechSupport Forum.

I have two issues. One I've come across just recently, I'd say 2 weeks or so(AND in the past, but it ceased on its own). The other is pretty minor, but still an annoyance and I've had it for as long as I can remember.

I'll start with the recent issue. Whenever my computer starts up Window Installer begins running(trying to install) MSOffice 12 repeatedly! Whenever I cancel it pops up again, and again tries to install. I have to click cancel at least 3 times for it to cease, in 2 sequences.

I tried the msconfig thing, but I don't know what exactly i'd be looking for and Google searches have proved fruitless for me as it never really gives a clear answer, at least one that doesn't seem applicable to my issue.

Two. It's not as bad as the first issue, but every now and then buttons on my task bar will hide itself automatically. So I'll have a window open, switch to another window by clicking on the specific task-bar item and the former window I was in (this doesn't happen EVERY time, btw) disappears. It gets irritating because I either have to minimize each window just to get back to it (or bring up task manager to click on it) and when I *do... Read more

I know how to get the task bar back and it's not being auto-hidden...
I have a Del M6800 running Win10 connected to an E Port plus replicator and two Dell U2412 monitors. With about 10 minutes of booting up the task bar on the main laptop screen disappears, the background image shrinks to the top left and the later on the task bar on the U2412 monitors vanishes.
I have tried two different port replicators - same issue.
Anyone have this problem before and know of a permanent solution?

looking for some help..... ( was a member a while back , but account gone ie: wrong user or pruned )

all the desk top icons and tool bars have disappeared when windows loads , cursor is working , when selecting windows user ... but none functional when entering desktop page ... wall paper is visible but nothing else

No commands work , such as task manager etc and of course no programs , internet or anything just blank and unusable

I have run computer in SAFE MODE , this seems to work fine with icons present and everything as normal......and have run various scans as precautions ...these picked up nothing ...

I can run task manager in safe mode and have input 'new task' >explorer.exe> this is running and present , but on reboot to go into windows normally all is the same.

also have typed issue into google , and run a few solutions i found from the search ... but to no avail..

such as

and adding new task regedit.exe ( but to be honest i didn't have a clue what i was doing , just following instructions )

any advise would be greatful on this issue, many thanks in advance

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature
To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:
Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Can I change the captioned OS displaying Chinese on tool bars, icons etc.

Having played around on "Regional and Language Options" without result.

IIRC it is possible. I did it about 9 years ago when WinXP was first released.

Okay so this problem happened slowly.

First I just recently got internet the day this happened.

Then my computer starts slowing down.

Then applications are not running, saying (null) and that they are not win32 compatible programs.

Then I can't access the task manager, it says it's been disabled by the administrator (Which is ********).

Then my logon screen changes to just a black screen with a plain prompt style logon screen.

Then when I log in it's just my desk top background with no icons or task bar, and I can't do anything, and most times it just immediately logs back off.

It does the same thing in safe mode. I can't do system recovery.

As soon as I logged in I smashed a bunch of keys and got the task manager to pop up and I've been running things through that. I downloaded HJT and have a log here.

This is very urgent, as I have some pretty pricey software on here. I'm a graphic design student with alot of homework and I'm really stressed out right now and would love to get this problem resolved.

Here is my log, please help me out:

A:Dektop shows up with no icons or task bar. Running things through Task manager.

I don't mean to bump this, I just would like to point out that i was only able to complete Step 1.

I removed all of those programs that I found, I had to use appwiz.cpl in task manager.

The other steps I couldn't perform because I can't use IE. My system also noted the files as corrupt or not compatible with Win 32.

And I need to use IE to do the online PC scan thing as well.

I'm really sorry, I hope I can still get some help.

Hello all, im hoping that im able to get an answer for this as its been driving me crazy and I cant seem to find an answer anywhere online. On Saturday my PC was turn on, and once logged into Windows Ive found that all that happens is my windows loads into a blank wallpaper that I have. I have no icons, no task bar and I am unable to bringup the task manager (ctrl-alt-del doesnt work).

After leaving for a full hour, it still hadnt loaded and still unable to acess task manager. I tried a load into the last good config and it still loaded into the above. Ive tried loading into Safemode and safemode /w netowrking and its the same story. The only place I have any acess is Safemode /w an active command prompt, although there isnt any icons or taskmanager.

The last resort is to try a repair via the XP CD which i still have, but before i risk messing anything up, id ideally try to fix my PC. Is there any ideas on whats happened? Its Windows XP with Service Pack3. I dont recall installing any updates but I do have it on auto-install anyway. All help is gratefully welcomed!

A:Loading into blank wallpaper. No task bar / icons/ Task Manager

At the blank desktop press CTRL+ALT+DEL start the Task Manager. Go up to File/New Task (Run) in the Run box type explorer.exe and press enter. If that doesn't work at the Run box or the command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and do a System Restore to a time before this happened.

Morning All,
This problem has been posted before, but I couldn't get resolution.
I have Windows 7 Pro on a 64 bit desktop.
Had a few problems recently - no display signal on boot, but thought I was on top of it.
Booted system this morning, and only got to the Wallpaper (heard Windows audible sound on boot). No task bar, no program icons, couldn't access Ctrl+Alt+Del - just a black screen.
System boots in Safe Mode OK
Worked a few issues found on the web (separate laptop).
No cause for concern - a number of backups & cloned disks.
Fitted a clone disk from 10 days ago and the problem is exactly the same.

This would indicate a hardware problem?

Appreciate any thoughts

I have had a strange thing happen to my task bar. It looked normal until I had a computer lock up after installing a new virus program called Kaspersky. My lock up happened right after I installed the new virus program and started removing the McAfee program that came installed with the computer. The computer is only a few days old.

When the computer restarted instead of the regular task bar at the bottom of the screen my task bar shows two little icons with no words and a up down arrow bar. If there are more than two items opened you have to use the up down arrow to find the screen you want and click on it. This is very annoying because I am always working several things at the same time and it takes for ever to keep going back and forth with these little arrows.

I am one of your clueless users. I have been off line for 8 years with no computer. Things have changed drastically since I last worked with computers. My last operating system was ME and I still worked through DOS a lot because that was what I was comfortable with.

I am telling you this because I am having to relearn everything to do with computers and am very clueless about many things. I do follow instructions pretty well. <G>

Hi everyone

I am searching this problem I am having over the last few days. It is very very frustrating now.
I have Windows 7 Enterprise Edition 32 bit
My Desktop Icons and Start Up Task Bar are missing

I have tried everything -
Task Manager - Type explorer.exe
Check regedit but didnt find anything there
Run Malwarebyte NO use
Used HiJackthis NO use

After Windows boot and splash, all I get is a black screen with Explorer Window showing C D E Drives.

Then after searching everywhere possible in the internet, I had one suspicion. In Control Panel, when I click Task Bar and Menu, and Folder Option Icon, they DO Not Open. All others do open. I think they are disabled there in Task Bar and Menu by Virus??

I have lot of work pending on my Laptop and this is so frustrating now... please HELP any suggestions?

When I exit windows explorer, I get the following message:

And after that, sometimes I lose the task bar and the desktop icons.
I have not been able to characterize this better - i.e exactly when or after exiting win explorer how many times does the task bar disappear.

The only consistent part is that I get the above error message.

I have read through this thread:

So far I have done these things:

1. Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Windows Task Manager -> File -> New Task(Run) -> explorer.exe

This only starts a new explorer window. It does not restore icons or task bar.

This did not show any corrupted files or any error messages.

3. There were no restore points that I could go back to. :(

4. I have run anti-virus (AVG, Avira, Kaspersky online), and anti-spyware (Spyware S&D, PC Tools Spyware Doctor), but they have not come up with anything.

I was thinking of using the Windows CD and choosing the 'repair' option next, but was hesitating in case I will loose any patches I have applied.

I would appreciate any suggestions for troubleshooting this.

Thank you.

You may have to kill any process named explorer in the processes tab first. If there's already an explorer process, starting it will only open a new windows explorer window.

Another thing you should check is the event viewer. Go to control panel (classic view), administrative tools, event viewer. Look in the application log, and look for any event that indicates an explorer crash. Double click it, and look at the report; sometimes it may indicate the module that causes the crash (for example a .dll). If it's a known program you recently installed you could uninstall it, or at least disable any explorer extensions that are part of it.

I have a problem that I have seen happen more than a few times on user PC's across our company. What seems to happen is that all running processes and tray icons manifest themselves as windows on the desktop. It might be hard to understand what I mean but the picture should explain better. This computer was only running 4 or 5 programs then for no reason (no reason I have found yet) all these windows appear!

This has happened multiple times and there doesn't appear to be any reason or any link between software that was running at the time; things the users were doing; etc. Event Viewer doesn't show any errors or leads that would help diagnose a problem. All users are running Windows XP SP3 with Office 2003 SP3. All of the computers have pretty much the same baseline software.

The quick fix is to reboot the computer. When the computer boots up again the issue is gone.

Has anyone seen this before?

I am missing the start menu, taskbar icons and shortcuts, charm bars, clock and when I click the customize notification area button nothing opens up. I have Windows Server 2012 and DDS doesn't allow me to install it so here is my hijackthis log. I have ran Malwarebytes, Spybot, ESET, Trendmicro housecall all with no fixes. I cant reinstall windows on a live web server so please help me fix this. I basically have a blank background and an empty taskbar that doesnt do anything. Start button doesnt work but I am able to do start + R commands to pull up the Run screen. CTRL ALT DEL just pulls up a blank blue screen from which I can no longer remote desktop connect to and have to shut down the server and turn it back on. When I right click on the desktop and click sort by Name then all my desktop icons come back temporarily. I also can not drag and drop things from a folder to the desktop yet I can Cut and Paste to the desktop. If I try to rearrange icons on the desktop it will not allow me to move them it just has that circle with the line through it icon for the mouse. Unhide me came back with this which I thought could be relevant:
noactivedesktopchanges policy was found and deleted
I am stuck so let me know what you can do. Thank you - Russ -

Hi There,

I've been trying to help my father-in-law with this problem, but its gone above my experience, so I am hoping someone here can help.

Dell Computer
Windows XP

When the computer loads, we get to the main screen, but the wall paper has changed to a screen with boxes of color that makes a maze (lol)

All icons are gone, and so is the task bar

When attempting to access to the Task Manager, using Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Task Manger comes up with an error stating "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator",which gives you only 'ok' to click on, and then of course you're not able to work within Task Manager.

I attempting to get him to use the Run but using CTRL+R but when he hit it, all you could hear was the computer beeping and nothing appeared.

When talking to him, he says he remembers seeing a screen before this all happened that said something about a trogjan, and he thought he hit okay to get rid of it. After talking to him more today he told me there was a few different windows that he kept following along and hitting, so I assume it is the Antivirus 2008 trojan family that may have his computer hostage.

Where do we go from here?

A:No Task Bar/Icons - Cannot Access Task Manager

My computer had several viruses on it. I removed them, but they left some damage. All of my icons are gone. There is no taskbar. I cannot access the task manager. I cannot access anything. I have tried booting into safe mode, but I get the same thing. I have tried accessing files through the sticky keys ease of access center, but the link is not in the dialog box when I press shift 5 times. I am sure if I could run unhide.exe it would solve the problem it is just that I cannot access anything. All I have is a blank screen with a cursor.

Edit: I cannot right click. I also tried creating a usb to autorun unhide.exe, but to no avail.

I have windows XP and after I used appwiz to uninstall a few programs that I thought were innocuous, Windows XP starts but when I log in nothing shows up on my screen other than the background; no icons and not even the bar at the botton with the start button. How do I fix this? I can open the task manager with ctr/alt/del.
I tried booting in safe mode and as logging on as the administrator. I can't start explorer from Task Manager. Nothing worked. My system make is dell dimension 3100; XP version is home edition with service pck 3. I don't have an installation disc. My antivirous software is AVG.
When I type explorer.exe in the new task (run) box in the windows task manager, the menu bar at the bottom of the screen with the start button flashes very briefy (like a 1/4 of the second.
Could this be malware?

Do you have a System Restore point ??
Start>>>All programs>>Acessories>.system tools>> system restore.,
>Restore my computer top an earlier time
This time should prior to your uninstalling programs
Follow the prompts.

I keep losing the icons in Explorer, even with a fresh install of W7. It takes some time, but sooner or later they disappear. It's always Internet Explorer first (associated with .mht files) and now I've lost Chrome (associated with .htm).

Any ideas as to why this happens? Is there any fix you guys know of?

Rebuilding the W7 icon cache has not worked in the past.

A:Lost File Type Icons in Windows Explorer

Hello IveyLeaguer,

The icon cache would have no affect on file associations. They are two different animals.

The most common reason for file association issues is folks changing them using Open with.

If you like, you could use the tutorial below to quickly restore the default association of any file extension.Default File Type Associations - Restore
If you are sure that you or another user is not changing the file associations, then I would recommend to do a full scan of your system with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free to help make sure that your system is clean.

Hope this helps,

My 2 year old was banging on the keyboard the other day and changed the way my desktop appears. The icons are no longer translucent and windows no longer auto refreshes when I make changes to files.

I've done a repair of XP, loaded all the updates, reinstalled the latest graphic/ATI drivers and VIA chip drivers. I can't find a setting option to change these settings.

Any ideas?

A:icons lost translucancy, windows doesn't auto refresh

For the translucency, go to Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance Settings>Check "Use Drop Shadows on Desktop Icons".

For the autogrid, go to your desktop, right click your mouse, select "Arrange Icons By", and then check "Auto Arrange" and "Align to Grid".

I hope this worked . Good Luck  !

These strange behaviors happened suddenly. I now have the generic blue desktop background that is consistent with the initial windows startup. In explorer, I can see two profiles, one of which contains all of the correct files such as my favorites and desktop icons. However it is not the one currently running and I don’t know how switch between users. Any ideas?

For whatever reason, my signal strength seems to consistently drop, but only when I'm in my basement. I have perfect signal strength when I'm upstairs. Strangely enough there never used to be a problem and it just started out of nowhere. I want my internet speed back, it's frustrating, can someone please help me!?

I have a Dell Inspiron 7377.

It depends on where the Wireless Access Point is located, and how many other A/P's are on the same channel(s) as the Access Point. Also if the power is dialed down on the Wifi, that can also cause issues.

When I returned from a trip this weekend, all that was on my computer was my wallpaper. There are no icons and no start menu. I have rebooted several times, but after startup I am left with nothing. I get no results from right- left- or double-clicking. I can access most programs by using CTRL-ALT-DEL and then selecting new task. All of my files appear to be intact. I have Norton Antivirus 2003, and I have run an update and done a virus scan. No viruses have been found.

When I look at my settings in Norton, it says that my Auto-Protect is off and my Email Scanning has "ERROR." It won't allow me to enable the Auto-protect. I try, but when I bring it up again, I am right back where I started from. I have tried running the Klex virus fixer and the MSBlast, but it says they cannot be found on my computer.

Please help! I don't know how this happened, and I don't know what else to try. I downloaded a MS patch (I can't remember which one) and rebooted, but it didn't help.

Thanks in advance!
