External Microphone won't work on x230 Tablet

Q: External Microphone won't work on x230 Tablet

I have a microphone that works only as such, with no speaker and is not a headset. I am trying to get it to work with my Lenovo x230 Tablet laptop.

When I plug it into the 3.5mm port on the right side next to the Ethernet input nothing happens and it doesn't show up in my windows sound or do anything except change the top left port under "Analog System" from gray to black. Unfortunately that is the audio port not the microphone port. This is shown by the next two pictures.Microphone not plugged in:

So something is up...I tried again by going to the "device advanced settings" and changing it from "classic mode" to "Multi-stream mode".This atleast shows in the windows control that there is a "external mic" and a "docking mic". I have no idea what the docking mic is. Anyway this picture below is what happens before I plug in the mic:

And now when I plug it in:
Link to picture

As you can see the windows controller is unchanged in the input recording tab but, the realtek program has detected the mic again by turning on the analog headphone button on. As well as adding an extra tab to the program called "HD Audio 2nd output". As far as I can tell t thinks my mic is a headset for some reason. I wish to change this. When I switch over to the sound tab on the windows program it shows an added headset which is actually it detecting my microphone in windows. It only detects this headset when the realtek program is in advanced "Multi-stream mode". Here is a picture illustrating both the new tab on the Realtek Manager and the Windows Sound tab showing the headset which is again actually my microphone.

And yes I have updated my Realtek Driver to the latest version it is Version shown in the picture below:

Any help I could be given would be greatly appreciated as I have been trying to find a solution to this problem for the past couple days.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Lots of problems with the microphone and sound system. Really disappointing after dropping so much cash on this laptop.  Aside from the insane amount of background noise that makes the built-in mic basically unusable with Skype, the main problem I'm having is the combo mic/headphone port. It doesn't work for input -- nowhere am I seeing it detected, not in Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording, and not in the Realtek app. If I plug my iPhone headset into my laptop, I cannot record sound so long as it is plugged in. This has been an issue for other laptops using the Conexant drivers; I've updated my Realtek drivers and done all the basic troubleshooting for sound. Anyone have any other suggestions? Anyone else experiencing this glitch?Jeff

Please help-- I've tried everything. I have an external microphone headset that I plugged into the back of my pc (pink mic and blue line-in). I've unchecked mute on the microphone in the volume control and recording mode in options. I've done the "test" in the control panal/sounds and audio devises/voice/test hardware-- but it doesn't recognize it. ALso under the audio devises/audio-- the advanced tab is greyed out. I've tried everything including going into my administrative tools panal to see if there is problems in the human interface -- checked "manual" but nothing works! Please help! Everything is updated-- I have a sound audigy sound card- but it tests okay.

I've come here because I have no other options, this is frustrating me to no end. My problem is fairly simple. I recently bought a zalman zm-mic1 to use for streaming purposes, but I can't find where to plug it into my laptop. I've tried plugging it into where headphones go(aka the only slot it fits in) but it doesn't come up as a recording device. I've read all sorts of stuff about sound cards and splitters but that's like a different language to me. The mic is super simple. On one end is the mic, on the other is a red plug, it says its 3.5mm. This is straight from the manufacturer. " Insert the microphone jack into the Mic Input of the soundcard/audio input device. Adjust the Mic Input Level in the soundcards software/audio input device." Is my laptop not an audio input device, and if not, does that mean I absolutely have to blow more money on whatever a sound card is? BASICALLY all i'm asking is how the hell do I actually record sound with this mic. I have my laptop, my webcam, my capture card, and that's about it. Am I missing something? For my webcam all I did was plugged it in and boom it worked great, so wtf is up with this

A:My external microphone won't work!

Hi fuzzybluelights, and welcome to TSG.

It would be rather difficult to suggest any new possible solutions if you don't tell us some of the things you have all ready tried. Not that many members here have clairvoyant powers.

Some possible solutions ...

Have you checked the Windows volume/mixer control panel to make sure the mic input is not muted?

Some computers may have hardware that allows the mic input to also work as a line level input. In that case, it needs to be specifically set to be a mic input.

Have you checked the microphone on a another computer to make sure you did not buy a bad one?

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I'm also new in using X230 tablet or any 2-in-1 laptop. This is my second ThinkPad but first convertible laptop. About problems. Shortly after I've got this ThinkPad I've installed Windows 10 because in my opinnion it works better and IS better than Win7. But after installation, I've encountered a few problems.First problem was no auto rotation - I could do that only by installing drivers for Tablet Buttons (it didn't bother me that much as next few problems).Second problem was not working Dolby Profile - anyone has suggestions why? I've read that eccp4.exe or something like that is not supported in Win10. The only thing with Dolby that did work was Dolby Digital Plus (and the equalizer there is horrible!).And third, and also MAIN problem was random screen touches. Did anyone encountered this kind of problem on yours X230 tablet? It happened only when I was fully in "tablet mode". Like for example I was doing some notes on classes and A LOT of times Action Center came up. With no touch from my side - I was only writing notes or not even touching the screen. Also normal touches appeared, not only Action Center sliding. Firstly I've got a little scared because it's used laptop bought on something like ebay. But my second thought was to go back to Win7 from recovery (which didn't work with F8, I've used SWM/WIM tutorial to fully recover system). And finally it seems that this problem doesn't occur on Win7. When I'm in full "table... Read more

i've been running windows 10 as a devoloper since before its's launch with very few issues.First make sure you download the drives from lenovo for winows 10 that till fix most of your issues.some things are just not compatable with the windows 10 OS look for replacements in the windwos store but your dolby does have a driver update. for some reason the thinkvantage software does not down load the drivers for you you'll have to do that on your own. Once you download all your drivers your X230T will run much more normaly. keep in mind however if you have the touch screen model it only supports 2 finger touch while winows 10 supports 10, it still works but many of the gestures don't you can chage your screen if your so inclined as far as i know there is no driver update. Good luck

Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

I would just replace the keyboard.  This sort of problem is almost always a short in the keyboard.  Used ones are commonly available.  The T430, X230, T530, W530 all use the same keyboard

I am starting to get into the game commentating business on YouTube and I need help. I already put out a video and decided to purchase the recording software I've been using to get higher quality sound and video. Although when I tried to record a video I didn't realize that nothing was getting picked up through my mic. I use the Turtle Beaches Ear Force X11 headset. Now I thought these finally broke on me since I've had them for a while, but that's not the case. I tried messing with the input and wiggling it around a bit, but to no avail. But then I noticed something. It works perfectly fine when i put it in only partially and not all the way. I would continue to keep using this like this but when I use it partially plugged in I seem to get a lot of constant buzzing and background noise due to the connection not being completely secure. How do I fix this?? I've gone into the mic settings and tried setting it up again, but it wouldn't even pick up any sound there either. Please help!

When I updated Windows 10 to the newest Version (Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit, Version 1607 Build 14393.82) the autorotate on my Thinkpad X230 Tablet is not working anymore. Using the rotate button the screen rotation changes but there is no screen change when putting the laptop into tablet mode or when rotating the laptop. With the "old" Windows 10 I had no problems with the autorotate function. I observe the following behaviour/errors:In the action center the button rotation lock is present, but doesn't change / unlock the rotation (it says it changes but the icon always stays on locked and there is no change). In the device manager the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 is listed under "unknown".Under "sensors" there were no entries. I added a Simple Device Orientation Sensor" but it didn't change anything. Other sensors all report the error that the driver cannot be started. A windows lcation provider is not availabe.Using the SensorDiagnosticTablet.diagcab it says that the windows location is turned off and cannot be turned on but in the action center/location the location service is "on".When I open the Lenovo Airbag Protection, the little laptop is moving according to the external inputs, so there is some detection of the motion. In the Tablet Shortcut Menu the button for enable autorotate is on and the laptop was calibrated. I already reinstalled all the drivers from the lenovo site (active protection system, dependencies, settings dependencies, graphics). Hi, hmandi01

In Windows 8, writing-to-text transcription is normally a "keyboard," if you will, that you have to select. When you are on the desktop of your machine, is there a keyboard icon on the taskbar? If this is not visible in laptop mode, then see if it is there in tablet mode. If that icon is visible, click on it. This should bring up the touch keyboard. On this keyboard, the bottom-right key should be another keyboard icon. Select this icon and then select the pen option (third option.) This should change the touch keyboard into a transcription keyboard.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
Adam

Hi all, This laptop is giving me nightmares at this point. I can't afford a new one at this moment so i come here for input. The issue I am having right now besides the known audio failure is with the power management, spedificaly the throttling that happens while it is on AC. To me, it seems that the Speedstep roles are reversed. It runs on full turbo speed, over 3ghz on battery but it clocks down to 1198mhz according to CPU-Z when it is plugged in. No combination of settings either in the BIOS, Power manager or the Windows power options have any effect, everything is at 100%. The battery is installed at all time and I have tried both 65 watt and 90 watt AC adapters which are both new. BIOS is updated and I have tried both Win 7 and 10, fully updated with a fresh install with newest drivers and programs and numerous BIOS resets with CMOS battery removed. I am suspecting the power jack at this moment but Power manager reports both AC adapters correctly. I appreciate any response if anybody else has faced this issue or anything like it.

I recently bought a X230 tablet. Actually I did not realise that it can rotate screen in tablet mode automatically, at least in Windows 7 and Windows 8. I performed a clean install of Windows 10 and obviously it did not support auto rotate even with all the drivers that Lenovo System Updater helped me installed. One thread in this forum solved auto rotate in Windows 8. It is largely the same to that thread. Except that for Windows 10 you need to let the X230 recognise the built in accelerometer which is actually mainly intended for protecting hard drive from being damaged after free fall. Incidentally accelerometer found its way in Sony's hard drive walkman HD5 before, which also has hard drive accidentally falling protection and screen auto rotating function. All you need is 2 pieces of software: 1. Thinkpad Tablet Shortcut menu                                                                 2. Thinkpad Active Protection System. The 2nd file is the one that will allow the accelerometer come to life. Installing this 2 software and the needed reboot. go to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\ThinkPad\Tablet Shortcut\' and double click on 'LENTBCTL' to run it. Then use your stylus to click the 'Settings' button at the lower left corner. Then you will find 'auto rotating' option. Tick the box ahead of it and following t... Read more

I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

Hi,I am suspecting a hardware failure, but wanted to check the forums first anyway.I have an X230 Tablet running Windows 8.1 Update. Fingerprint software 6.0. A:X230 Tablet fingerprint reader stopped working

It sounds like hardware failure but try one more thing:

Reboot into BIOS setup (by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen).
Go to the security -> fingerprint menu.
There's an option about clearing the fingerprint sensor storage (or something like that).
What happens?

What would be the steps to solve this?  On the external display the machine seems to run great.  I bought a new IPS screen and it looks to be in great condition.  I have no way to compare it with another screen that I know of as I only have this one (received laptop w/o a screen) and would prefer to not spend $50-$75 to test this.  My guess is that the screen is fine. 1) Check and reseat cables?2) Purchase new LCD cables?3) Remove everything (ram, hd, etc) and see if it posts?  Currently do not hear any beeps.  ... etc?  anything simple and obvious I'm missing?  Is there any way to test the screen without purchasing another one? It is NOT the duplicate/extend setting.  I have -- on the external monitor -- set it to duplicate, primary only, etc, and it had no effect.  thanks!

I have an ASUS T100TA tablet to which I have attached a Samsung SE-218 CD and DVD player.

When I attach it with a CD in it, the tablet recognizes the player and then drops it, and then recognizes it, and then drops it etc. etc. in an irregular pattern. Windows Media Player recognizes that there is media to play, but doesn't play it. Windows Explorer can see the files but when I switch the Samsung into AV mode and try and copy the music files onto the hard disc. for example, it says that the files are not in the indicated location.

The DVD player works fine on a Win 7 and a Win 8 laptop so it is either the tablet or Windows which is causing the problem.

The tablet only has one USB port, so I can't test if the port is the problem (but it seems to run other USB devices OK).

I have installed all the important Windows updates on the tablet. I tried rebooting with the drive attached.

Nothing works.

A:External Battery Charger for Tablet PC without micro USB

To even have a chance of answering your question, we would need to know the make and model of the tablets. Your best bet would be to try and contact the manufacturer of the tablets.

I have two laptops running windows 8, Asus AO756-2626 and HP dm4-3099se. Internal mic works on both. I have two computer mics and one professional type that needs an adapter for the jack. When I insert either mics, nothing happens on either laptops. The external mic in the sound settings is grayed out and says currently unavailable.

A:External Microphone Currently not Available

Depending on the actual audio codec driver of the machine, you probably just need to change the input port from line-in to mic, especially if the machine does not physically have both.

Hey guys,

I'm new here, so I am hoping someone out there can give me some advice on this! Today I picked up a regular desktop microphone for my computer (one that uses the 1/8th jack) and was testing it out. Suffice to say, after an hour or so of fiddling with the volume options for the microphone and different positioning of the mic. I am not that happy with the quality of recording I am getting out of it. I have decided I am going to return this one, but was thinking about getting a USB instead. I know I have been told the recording quality is much superior on a USB microphone vs. the one I have now. My question being, will my computer recognize this as a microphone/line in as any other 1/8th style mic. would be recognized? For the purposes I need a microphone for (a Skype conversation being broadcasted live over a JetCast server on winamp) I need this microphone to be recognized much like any regular 1/8th mic. would be. I looked into the headsets, but I am unsure if those would be recognized as a microphone/line in, therefore defeating the purpose of what I need it for. Hopefully this makes sense to someone out there, and that someone can give me some hardware advice on this. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out! -Phrozen

My specs: Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop, Windows XP Home, basic audio hookups to the side (one for speakers, one for the mic), Sigmatel Audio.

A:External USB Microphone

When you plug a USB headset/mic into a computer it forms its own subsystem audio. So for instance if you were using Realtek audio before, the USB's brandname audio would take over and you get a mic in setting for the USB microphone seperate from the other audio subsystem.

Sometimes Skype will be looking for the wrong mic in or something dumb like that but it will work just fine with Skype once it all configured correctly.

One drawback is (at least on my system) that the other audio subsystem is not usable while the USB subsystem is active and each time you move from one to the other there are some settings that may need to be reset each time in order to enable them again.

Hello to all,I have a thinkpad laptop and it has the 2 internal microphones and it has an audiojack for headphones. My manual says my laptop will support a headphone/microphone combo, but NOT a microphone only. I do not have or want (at this point) a docking station. Does anyone know of a way or of a type of external microphone (without a headset) that i can use and that will work? would a usb mic work or is this laptop just incapable of using an external mic? thank you for allowing me to post.

Hi there!

I know nothing about sound and mic stuff. I'm learning as I go, so forgive me if all of this is obvious.

I wanted to buy a cheap lavalier microphone for some video recording I need to do. I need it to plug into a source other than my camera, so I assumed my computer (Macbook Pro Early 2008) would be the best choice. I ordered the Trantec LP2 because it was cheap and had a mini-jack that I assumed would plug straight into my computer and work. It does not.

So, having done a little research, I'm guessing that my mic has no pre-amp (or whatever the technical term is) and needs to be powered externally. To solve this, I purchased a very cheap USB bus-powered external sound card, which I assumed would be enough to power the mic. Apparently not.

Can anybody just quickly tell me what I can plug my microphone in to to make it work? I saw an iMic suggested, but I don't want to spend 20 on something I'm not sure will work. It doesn't need to even be a computer add-on...I can use an external audio capturing device (like a dictophone?) if need be, but the only requisit is that I don't want to spend 's. I don't particuarly need high-end stuff, I just need something cheap that will read the mic I've already bought.

Or, on the flip side, if anyone knows of any similarly priced mics that would do a better job than my LP2 without addition equipment needed, feel free to suggest them to me, as I'm thinking of just cutting ... Read more

Hope somebody out there can help me out. Recently I purchased an Audio-Technica OMNI ATR3350 Microphone that must be plugged into the headphone/Mic port. When i open my editing software (Cyberlink Audio Director) My computer is not defualting to pick up the microphone that is plugged in, rather it defaults the internal mic that comes with my PC. In addition, When i go into my microphone settings, I am prompted to "set up mic" which I've done multiple times trying to figure this out! When my external mic is plugged in, my internal is not picking up sound, which is good. What i believe is the issue is my computer is recognizing the plug in as headphones and not microphone. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

My mother recently acquired a tablet so that she can write Chinese on the computer. (She doesn't like using pinyin or any alternatives that I've tried to make her use)

We currently own a Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) desktop which was purchased in New Zealand.

She purchased the tablet in China, and it worked on various computers in China.

However, after installing the software successfully on the New Zealand computer, the software is unable to recognise characters that my mother inputs into the computer.

How do I tackle this problem? Thank you.

Note: The tablet is by the company 'Uniscom', if that makes any difference.

A:Chinese tablet does not work

Run windows update from the control panel.
Check the optional updates and install the language pack that you need.

Got my ThinkPad X1 Tablet (20GG) about a month ago. Front and back cameras were both working then. Then one day, the front camera light comes on as soon as I power up the tablet, even before Windows boots up. Updated  the drivers a day or two ago, didn't help. I've trawled the Internet for solutions, one of which was to look for the device path of the camera, then do something I forget at the moment, didn't help either. Kindly advise

I have an older desktop PC with a Windows Vista OS. I'm thinking of purchasing a Tablet but I'm not sure it will work because I use a modem. I was told that Tablets come with a wireless internet card but will the tablet work if I'm not using a wireless connection? What will I need to do or what will I need to purchase to make it work? Sorry, but I'm not up-to-date on the latest technology.

A:Will Tablet work with a modem?

Depends on the definition of "works", But i am assuming you mean connecting to the internet. The answer is no.

All internet connctions at home use a modem, What kind of internet do you have? Cable company, Phone cable always on, or actual dial-up like old school style?

If its high speed, its quite possible your provider has a modem/wireless router you can trade your old one in for free.

If itsa skretchy modem type, I'm not sure what you can do, other than use free hot spots.

Happy New Year to you all!

Here is a question for you, my external hard drives have been checked against viruses and were fine and all clear. For Christmas I got an Arnova tablet and today I decided to attach my Western Digital to it. When it finally recognised it after I switched the thing off and then on, I noticed that the external hard drive has a folder called $Recycler.Bin. However when I connect the SAME external hard drive to my PC that runs Windows 7, that folder is not on the external hard drive. Can someone please explain to me what is going on?

A file called LOST.DIR on another external hard drive keeps popping up as well. I delete it but then when I reinsert the external hard drive there that little folder is again. Any suggestions on this also?

Thank you.
