T480 Trackpoint Intermittent

Q: T480 Trackpoint Intermittent

I've been having fun with the new T480, except for a problem with the trackpoint. I don't use the trackpoint for much, but I do use its buttons at the top of the touchpad. I noticed that the buttons were not working, which led me to try and see if the red stick was working. When the buttons stop, the red stick stops too. The trackpoint will just stop working, and I can't see any pattern to what causes it to quit. I was worried that it was a hardware problem, and it might be, but if I go to the settings and disable, then re-enable the trackpoint, it usually starts working immediately. The computer is only two weeks old, and is under warranty, but being without it while I send it in for service is far more expensive to me than buying new parts and installing them myself. But is there a good strategy for exhausting software problems first? The Lenovo vantage update system seems to think everything is up to date. While I've been composing this post, it has started and stopped working twice.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,Yesterday arrived my new T480. After a complete system upgrade I tried to enable the trackpoint without success. Even before upgrade it was not working. In the bios it's enabled. In the advanced mouse properties the option is greyed out. This is what i tried following similar threads on the forum:Reinstalled windows 10 home.Enabling and disabling from bios with many restarts.Reinstalling drivers, from microsoft and from lenovo. I have Synaptics driver version 19.3.4.201. Trackpad is working fine. Trackpoint and buttons not. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

HelloAs many others have described in other posts, my trackpoint is not working. It sometimes works when I go into advanced boot options, and when I do a hard restart (unplug batteries, or reset bios to OS optimized defaults) it sometimes starts working again for a small period of time. Then it can stop working, either after a hibernation, but also just in the middle of using the computer. (I was watching netflix I think when that happened)What is the best cause of action?Everybody seems to agree, that it is a BIOS issue, as the problem often persists to other OS's.I would rather not open my computer, however I can and have done that in the past with other thinkpads. If I send it in to lenovo, what will they do to fix it there? And can I just do that from home, with a set of small screwdrivers?

HelloI am having the same problem as many others. My trackpoint and the three keys (right left and middle click) have been disabled. The bios says they are enabled and they have worked before. When I go to settings the option to enable it is greyed out which leads me to think it is a problem registiring the keys. I have tried many shutdowns and reboots but none have worked. What should I do?Some people say that a keyboard replacement is best. Would it work for me?Should I send it to Lenovo for repair?

So ive had my t480 for 2 months now. About 1 month ago the trackpad and trackpoint started observing unusual behavior. When i boot the machine up, the trackpoint doesnt work, but the trackpad works except its very laggy. Eventualy when i start using the machine, the trackpad starts to work regularly. Ive checked the bios settings, xorg config files (i use unix based operating systems usually) and ive tried using windows. None of these worked. So it seems like a hardware issue. What do i do?

A:T480 intermitant trackpoint and trackpad.

Hello and welcome,

This is totally out of left field... but I've seen similar behavior when testing live Ubuntu on an X280.

It's fixed (perhaps w/out advanced touchpad features) by adding "psmouse.proto=bare"  (w/out the quotes) to the kernel line in the grub boot stanza.

Can't explain why it would suddenly change on your machine, so as I said... out of left field...

I purchased a refurbished T480. Right out of the box, the trackpoint didn't work. I updated everything, looked through all the settings, and the switch you can click to enable the trackpoint is greyed out. Here it is:I looked through the forums, and most everyone said their trackpad wasn't working either. My trackpad works, but the trackpoint pointer and the buttons above the trackpad don't work. I checked the BIOS and it says trackpoint is enabled. I tried manually installing drivers for the device, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for the device. Nothing has worked. Help!

Do you have Vantage installed?  Can you toggle the TrackPoint enable there?

Just got my T480 and I love everything about it except for the touchpad and trackpoint are awful and lacking options. If one of my fingers is touching the trackpoint, sometimes when I double click using the left side touchpad button, unless i do it super slowly, it wont register. If one of my fingers is touching the trackpoint, probably half of the time when I single click with the bottom left 'button' it will register as a double click. Sometimes a single click will register as a triple click; sometimes a double click will register as a triple click. If one of my fingers is touching the trackpoint, for the 'buttons' under the touchpad, there is a long delay before the action registers on the screen. A lot of the time it wont register at all.Sometimes when I push in the touchpad on the bottom (*not* the bottom right) it will still register as a right click. Sometimes pushing in on the left side will register as a right button press. This gets even more screwed up if im touching the trackpoint.I use firefox gestures and to activate you use the right mouse button. If one of my fingers is touching the trackpoint, when I  use the bottom right button to do this, it will often act as if Ive done a right click when i let go of the button. If im moving the trackpoint and press the left side of the touchpad to select multiple things, it wont work (it will very briefly open the selection rectangle and close it). I have to first click down the left side of the touchpad, with abso... Read more

Have only had my T480 for a few days and Constantly plagued by an issue with the trackpoint and it's buttons. After a random period ranging from 1 minute to 10 minutes, the trackpoint stops working entirely; the touchpad becomes extremely laggy. After about 30 seconds the touchpad is working correctly however the trackpoint and its buttons stop working all together. The only way I have found to solve it, is rebooting the system, however it happens after every reboot. On occasion the trackpoint will work after this, but for only a second before failing to work again. This appears to be random, maybe after 15 minutes of it failing, after forgetting it's broken and trying to use it. This is after updating the Touchpad and pointer drivers, ensuring im on the latest BIOS.However this exact same issue occurs on a Linux partition, which leads me to believe it's a hardware fault.Has anyone experienced this before?

Several months ago I purchased a new T480 with a GB (UK layout) keyboard (01HX327), and am trying to replace that keyboard with a USE (U.S. Euro layout) keyboard (01HX368) listed here as compatible with my T480: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/fr/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-... With the original keyboard the keys, TrackPoint and TrackPad all work fine. However, when installing the USE kbd, while all the keys work properly neither the TrackPoint nor the mouse buttons work. I can, however, make the TrackPad work without any problem. With the USE kbd, when I go to the mouse control settings (Control Panel -> Mouse), "Enable TrackPoint" on the ThinkPad tab is greyed out. (It isn't with the UK kbd.) I have clicked on "Advanced settings" "Restore all defaults," without getting the TrackPoint and buttons to work. I also checked that the TrackPoint setting in the BIOS is Enabled. I have removed and reconnected the USE kbd several times just to be sure the two cables are connected properly. They also look identical to the cables for the original UK keyboard. When I reinstall the UK keyboard, everything works fine. And the "Enable TrackPoint" button is clickable on the TrackPoint tab in the mouse settings. A tiny "Language" pane on the right end of the task bar lists the two kbds, UK and US; switching between them makes no difference. Does anyone know how I can keep the "Enable TrackPoint" from being g... Hello community I have this old  thinkpad, which i am very fond of. However, recently the touchpad and trackpoint are acting up.Both right-buttons have stopped working. If i right click on the desktop, nothing happens - until i left-click... then the context-menu keeps popping up until i click on something else. Eventually both left buttons also stop working. I then have to press ctrl alt del and move the mouse over the on-screen-buttons initially they do not respond. after a while they become active again. Then the left button works for a little while until it starts over again... have tried updating drivers, removing the touchpad and trackpoint,  reinstalling windows 10 and flashing newest BIOS without any improvement. External mouse works flawlessly,,, Suggestions are most appreciated :-) Thanks, Kasper, Denmark

We have an older IBM thinkpad 600x, that my husband uses to play simple off line games and read a few emails. The past few days when booting we are getting the error #08611.
From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!

I know I just posted a thread, but I figured that issue is global enough to warranty its own. But this one seems to be specific to me.I'm a new Thinkpad (and trackpoint) user, and the trackpoint is very choppy for me. It seems to skip frames. For example, making a circular motion with the trackpad results in a continuous, smooth motion. But not so with the trackpoint. It seems to be micro-jumping (or skipping frames as I prefer to call it). This is easily noticeable when holding down the middle trackpoint button and attempting to scroll a page. The page does not scroll smoothly at all (has nothing to do with smooth scrolling, that's something else and not what I'm talking about). Now this isn't just with this X220. Before the X220 I briefly owned a x120e that had this EXACT same problem. I asked about it and people told me that is not normal. So I returned it and got this X220, but it's the same problem. The weird thing is that while this choppiness is present in Windows, it was just fine during the Windows install process. I've tried: disabling the trackpad, reducing/increasing trapoint sensetivity, updating drivers, removing drivers and reinstalling, bumping the priority of the driver to high. None helped. What are the chances I'd receive two machines with the same problem?

A:Choppy Trackpoint

Disabling the trackpad from the BIOS fixed the issue it seems (its definitely much smoother). Diasbling it within Windows did not help. If I recall correctly disabling the trackpad in the x120e from the BIOS was not an option. Too bad. But odd that others do not have this problem. Oh and my palm was not resting on the trackpad

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Hi there,So far I've been using a good old T61/T60 blend. Today I received a brand new T570 students' edition (512GB SSD, 8GB Ram, nVidia graphics, UHD display).Alas, the trackpoint has a mind of his own. Vertical movements are fast and may also be precise, I can't tell for sure. However all horizontal movements are noticeably slower. Then, the pointer would move without the stick being touched, for several seconds. The trackpad is useless while the pointer is moving. Precise and fast movements as known from my old thinkpad are practically impossible. What did I try so far trying to solve the problem?- updated bios and driver via thinkvantage system update- on top of that I also tried lenovo bridge via browser, but did not find any newer driver versions- I (de)activated enhanced mouse pointer acceleration, with no effect- I also removed and reinstalled the red dot from the stick - no effect- only deactivating the trackpoint helps, it even increases the precision of the touchpad, which seems to be constantly disturbed by the trackpointWhat can I do? Send the laptop back to lenovo? To me it seems someone was incapable of programming a solid driver for the trackpoint, and I struggle to understand this because my 10 years older thinkpad does not have problems of this kind. Thank you!

Today my wife said she is hating trackpoint her X1 Gen 4 as she has been having problems scrolling with it.  We have both been using Thinkpads for the last 22 years so this came as quite a surprise to hear. So digging into it, it seems the sensitivity option is totally missing in the drives since around 2015/2016.  I've only been using Linux on my P70 and it has a mind boggling number of settings I can adjust the trackpoint with.  My wifes X1 Gen 4.... Only one setting, speed. So maybe the problem is the hardware I thought.  So booting up a live Linux USB stick, I proceeded to find all the options for setting the trackpoint as I have on my P70.  So the issue is the driver in windows. Found a few threads on Lenovo's forums and the thinkpads.com forums as well. So I consider this a software defect with the drive.  And because my wife is not happy, I am not happy.  Lenovo, you have some stalwart Thinkpad fans and a lot of them buy Thinkpads for one reason, the trackpoint.  Please fix the UltraNav driver to include more configuration for the Trackpoint.  You provide a bunch of options for the touchpad, but only one option for the Trackpoint. Also, ad an option to turn the the touchpad into just a one finger scroll.  I've had to enable the touchpad again in my wife's X1 in order to use the touchpad just for scrolling.

Hi, I encounter the following issues with my Thinkpad T430s:- sometimes the mouse pointer starts moving on its on, always towards the same direction and always at the same speed. Rebooting temporarily resolves the issue until it occurs again. Reducing the sensitivity in the driver software does not have any impact. Pressing the trackpoint and letting go does nothing to stop it. - the left mouse button acts like a weird combination of a left click + some function that brings up context menus, if available (e.g. on desktop). This happens using the trackpoint, touchpad and sometimes even when using an external mouse. - Right mouse button does not function at all. No matter what function is assigned to it in the driver software, it does not work. External mouse works. All this ONLY happens if the trackpoint is ENABLED in BIOS. If I disabled the trackpoint in the BIOS, touchpad and all mouse buttons work fine. I tried Windows 10 and Windows 7. The problems occur under both operating systems using different driver software. Therefore, I do believe this to be a hardware issue. Anyone has experienced this issues and knows a good way to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Hi - I buy Lenovos because of their trackpoint.  My most recent Lenovo is an X1 Carbon.  I was much surprised to note that the X1 appears to be the first ThinkPad that will no longer allow me to turn off the touchpad from the Mouse Settings.  Never mind - I disabled it for good in the BIOS.  (I would like to have the Mouse Settings back because I occasionally allow touchpad users on my laptop and they simply cannot cope.) Anyway, from day #1 of ownership of this laptop, I noticed some very odd behaviour of the trackpoint:  It simply "wanders off".  It likes the left margin a lot, and the top left corner still more.  It is possible to force the cursor out of this position (by pushing hard against the trackpoint) but as soon as I let go of the trackpoint again, it wanders back. Thing is, the problem will go away after a while.  "a while" may be anything between 10 and 60 secs.  I thought it might be a h/w bug - the trackpoint perhaps being "stuck" and needing to relax - but it occurs so often that I am more inclined to thing it is a driver bug. I believe to be on the latest driver 19.3.4.99 so consider this post as a heads-up - something is still not quite right here. PS:  I am not a geat fan of reboots.  So I have disabled Updates on my Win10Pro.  I was most recently forced into a reboot (first time in 3 months or so) because whenever I clicked the middle mouse button, my screen would turn off.&nbs... Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. T420s, perhaps this is the reason for it. I found a link on the net to make the movement possible better;http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/thinkpad-t460s-trackpoint-mod.790347/In addition, previously there came several Caps with the laptop, now there is not a single extra one. I tried to look in the net, hard to find.  I used Lenovoguickpick and the possible code might be this;ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part # 4XH0L55146)Then again googling that with amazon produces no results so can't get those anywhere. Any help appreciated, Thank You.

According to Lenovo Japan, these new Super Low Profile caps are going to be available in May.

I have always used an IBM lap with a trackpoint mouse (that small little nub above the "B" key).

I purchased a similar keyboard for my desktop (IBM part #84H8566) and have been relatively happy with it. Plugged into the back of the computer, it takes up both PS/2 ports (for the keyboard, itself, and the mouse).

My question is this: I want to keep using my keyboard, but I'd like to add an external trackball and mouse (probably a Microsoft Intellipoint or a Logitech). I particularly want the ability to have a scroll wheel.

Does anyone out there know if there is any way to add this trackball/mouse and avoid a software conflict as I go from trackpoint/keyboard to trackball/mouse?

And....if no one out there has an answer, do you have a tech support number at IBM I could call (with or without a $$$ tech charge). I've been all over IBM's site and I can't find a "non-subscription" one-time tech number to call.

Thanks much !!

I am having some trouble with the trackpoint of my E560, and would like to know if it is possible to disable the trackpoint without disabling the trackpoint buttons (above the trackpad).Whenever I have the trackpoint enabled the cursor will start drifting and the trackpad will respond badly to input. However, when I disable the trackpoint the trackpoint buttons are also disabled, which I use frequently.Tech support sent me a new keyboard, but this didn't fix the issue and I cannot afford to lose my laptop for a week for repair at the moment. Support told me there is a option to disable the trackpoit in the BIOS, which does not seem to be there even though I updated the BIOS. Is there a way to disable the trackpoint without disabling the buttons? Or a way to repair without losig my laptop for a prolonged time? This is a DOA issue, and not the only issue i've been having with this laptop. Really expected better quality from a Thinkpad especially on the driver level.Been having trouble with the mouse and video driver since day one. Even on a clean install.

Hello, I have been experiencing this issue for quite a long time. Initially I thought it was due to an update for Windows XP, but I couldn't find any message on the logs when the laptop hangs. I re-installed XP several times to discard any software-related incompatibility, but even with a fresh install it was happening. I recently realized after several tests that the problem occurred more frequently when moving the mouse (trackpoint or touchpad) right after system boot (either cold boot or boot from hibernation). What I found out is that it will no longer happen if I suspend the laptop after the system has started, not touching the mouse. The symptoms are that Windows freezes. No HD activity at all, system doesn't respond to any mouse/keyboard input. If I close the laptop cover the system doesn't hibernate. The only way to resume normal operation is pressing the power off button for a few seconds, so the system turns off, then turn on normally. All drivers are up to date. Has anyone experience this issue? Thanks

A:T60 freezes when moving trackpoint right after boo...

Yes, I'm having the same problem on my T60--the less I use the trackpoint, the longer I have until the system freezes.  It's OS-independent too (I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and XP).

Hey! I have a problem with the following symptoms on a T61 9659 CTO model. - trackpoint randomly stops working during use or after wake up- this issue appears under Windows 7 64 bit and also Ubuntu Linux- there is nothing in the system log- sometimes, after waking up, neither of trackpoint and touchpad are usable and ultranav options are greyed out for both.- A full power cycle is alwas helps (poweroff, cold start) but a reboot or sleep/wake cycle is also helps sometimes)- as far as I notived, this behaviour can happen even if I leave the machine on the desktop alone (no physical impact on the chassis)- during these, keyboard remains operational (despite that they share the flex cable with the trackpoint) So what I think is less likely:- driver issue (2 different OSs, same behaviour)- cable issue (working keyboard, also happens when notebook us untouched) So, what? I saw a lot of topics about this, because this issue showed up on different models (also non-lenovo products are affected) and I really annoyed and want to find out the root cause. Buying a replacement keyboard, new notebook, anything else is not an option. I hope, there are a guy out there with a circuit drawing or something like this, who can help. Yes, I tried to reinstall ultranav driver, etc, blah blah blah. This is an issue, not just a driver bug. Thanks for any help!

A:T61 trackpoint stops randomly

Findings so far:- After a BIOS reset and a power management drive update, this issue seems to be solved- Notebook ran for almost 8 hours w/o any problem- After setting power plan to optimize performance and a sleep/wake up cycle, problem appeared again, but gone after switching to other power scheme
