Preferred Solution: Confused about how to Patch for Spectre.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought a supposedly crossover cable from a market stall and I have had numerous problems trying to hook up my two computers with it. I read somewhere that the straight cable is also called a patch cable, is this correct? if so, he has sold me the wrong one as my cable says cat5e PATCH. I hope he has in a way as that would be the reason I can't get it to work! if not, its just my usual bad luck. So can some one confirm this, is a patch cable, straight or crossover?

A:confused about patch and crossover cables

A patch cable is indeed a 1:1 cable. A cross-over cable will be marked as a cross-over cable, at least all of them that I've ever bought were so labeled.

I have been going crazy as I am sure others have been trying to get my computer patched.  I ran Powershell commnds to see if I am ok.  I found out it is incomplete without a patch from Lenovo.  It would be a mistake to not issue a patch as this would seem to be a betrayal of trust for those of us who bought Lenovo products. Please issue. Here is an explanation. The image means that your system received patches for the Meltdown bug, but has received incomplete patches for the Spectre bug. This was to be expected, as Google said yesterday that Spectre is harder to exploit, but also harder to patch. What the red text means is that you need additional chipset firmware updates. Microsoft and Google say that OEMs will need to provide users with these additional firmware updates to complete the Windows OS-level Spectre patches. Depending on your computer's age, some OEM might not make these firmware updates available, meaning you'll be stuck with an incomplete Spectre patch. If your laptop/desktop/server vendor has provided extra chipset firmware updates, you can get them from their official sites, install them, and complete the patch.

According tohttps://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/sa00115-microcode-update-guidance.pdfThere is a microcode patch for the Arrandale i5-520M out there. As of yet this patch is neither in intels linux microcode archive (latest version in there is 0x4 which is years old)https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27945norin the Windows Update cataloghttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090007/intel-microcode-updates I have scraped vendor sites for other laptops that shipped with that processor. A few of them had recent Bios updates with microcode patches. Especially the Panasonic Toughbook CF-31. I unpacked all of those bioses and the microcode was only for later CPUs not this one. So no luck there either.I contacted Intel support and they told me if its not in their official downloads then I have to ask the OEM. It was acknowledged that this patch exists and was shared with OEMs but the person on the other end was not allowed to give me any more Information. At Lenovo it seems all Arrandale Laptops are EOL now, so no new bios updates.Still that machine is pretty useful for me and I'd like use until it turns into dust. Afaik 20655 was used in Thinkpad X201, W410 and T410 which are EOL So if there is no kind stranger out there that can provide me this file somehow I have to give up on that matter. Does anyone of you forum users have more Info?

Intel says the unexpected reboots triggered by patching older chips affected by Meltdown and Spectre are happening to its newer chips, too.
Intel confirmed in an update late Wednesday that not only are its older Broadwell and Haswell chips tripping up on the firmware patches, but newer CPUs through to the latest Kaby Lake chips are too.

Dear Experts,

I have few queries :
> i have been pacthing IE on win 2012 R2 servers from Oct 2017 and the latest deployed pacth is April 2018 roll out. but when i scan these server by Vulnerability scanners- it detects  june 2017 IE patch missing(which i know was never deplyed as
i started patching from Oct 2017 ) and i believe this June 2017 IE patch requires below registry key to be present , which they are not :
The following registry key is missing.
This registry key is required to enable the fix for CVE-2017-8529:
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PRINT_INFO_DISCLOSURE_FIX\iexplore.exe
SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PRINT_INFO_DISCLOSURE_FIX\iexplore.exe
My Query is -
Does the installation of the superseding patch adds/updates the registry keys required for the patch it supersedes. In this case should  the successfull installation of April 2018 IE patch be adding these registry keys required for June 2017 IE patch.
if not  is there any documentation related to this ?

Unauthorized Patch For Microsoft WMF Bug Sparks Controversy

Sober worm may hit tomorrow, but businesses are more concerned about the WFM vulnerability and Microsoft's inability to produce a patch this week. Some are choosing an alternative that could lead to other problems.

By Larry Greenemeier

Jan 4, 2006 01:00 PM

Concerns over the lack of a Microsoft-issued patch have pushed the Windows Metafile/Zero-Day bug to top of mind, surpassing even tomorrow's much-anticipated Sober worm attack.

The lag time between the Dec. 27 discovery of the WMF vulnerability and Microsoft's planned Jan. 10 patch availability has forced IT security departments to find alternative means for protecting their systems and prompted a non-Microsoft developer to create a patch that others could use.

All of this serves to damage Microsoft's reputation as a company that can secure its own products—a reputation that only recently was beginning to improve after years of being dragged through the mud. Experts are divided over whether it's wise to use Ilfak Guilfanov's Hexblog patch to fix the WMF vulnerability, which could allow attackers to use WMF images to execute malicious code on their victims' computers. Some say it's a necessary measure to protect systems until the official Microsoft patch arrives; others say it's not worth the extra work to patch twice or to take the risk of using a third-party fix.

OK, My Grandmothers house was hit by electricity a couple of weeks ago. It blew out her phones and her computer will not turn on. I have not tried turning the computer on myself this is just what I was told. The strange thing to me is the computer was plugged into a surge protected with the monitor and other things. The monitor still works the surge protector still works and everything else that was plugged into the surge protector still works. The only thing that does not work is the computer. Isn't that strange? The electricity would have blown out anything pluged into the surge protected and would have tried the surge protector? RIGHT? Now I don't know if the whole computer will no longer work. Does it sound like it could just be the power supply? How does a computer act after getting hit by electricity? This computer will not do anything! You push the power button and nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas? Is the computer fried? Is there anyway to fix it? Thanks for the help...

Hi there,

I am trying to create a "Patch CD" for Win Xp. Basically, what I want to do is get all the patches from Microsoft onto a CD/DVD and then use it to update multiple machines instead of downloading the patches.

I'm doing this because sometimes, clients haven't updated their machines in years and when the connect to the net to do so, they immediately get infected.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this? Or on a software/ freeware available that can do this?

I posted at relic, no luck in help. So I thought I would try here. I can install CoH from my DVD no problem. The game works. When I try to patch it, the game becomes corrupt. I can get patch 1.40 to install, after that it is a no go. I am completely frustrated. I must be having a hardware conflict or a corrupt install disc. I do a selective startup with only Windows services running. Each an every time I get this error message involving this file "ww2data.sga" and this code: Error 10104.

Anyone else on Vista 64 experiencing this problem? This is the first real SNAFU I have encountered with 64. Sucks, especially when it is a "Games For Windows" game.

RelicNews Forums - Can't Patch beyond 1.4 in CoH w/ Vista 64

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Can't patch CoH

I have given up. I don't really feel like pulling hardware or uninstalling software to troubleshoot. I know it is not Vista 64, because other 64 users are running it fine.

I most likely have a corrupt install disc. I think developers/distributors should have a FTP site where you can download game files, especially if a known problem exists. Apparently, corrupt install discs were quite common with the original CoH. Just let me download a correct version. I already have serial/CD key. What is the harm? You can't use the program without it.

Sorry for the vent. I have sent a similar rant to both THQ and Relic. I guess we will see if it gets me anywhere.
