Does Bitlocker in Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 10 Pro support RAID 0 drive configuration?

Q: Does Bitlocker in Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 10 Pro support RAID 0 drive configuration?

My laptop has two SSD drives that run in RAID 0 configuration (so it's hardware RAID, not software RAID, but specifically RAID 0, where data are stored across two drives, not mirrored).

I am currently running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and ran into some difficulties when I turned on Bitlocker. I was able to get my computer back to functioning, and Bitlocker says that my drive is now fully encrypted, but I have an error message from
Intel, which is how we discovered that my drive is really two drives with RAID 0. I'm wondering if anyone knows much about this. Specifically:

Does Bitlocker in Windows 8.1 Pro support RAID 0 -- should I trust that it's actually fully encrypting my data and won't cause problems going forward, e.g., if I de-encrypt and re-encrypt to change the Bitlocker settings or upgrade my OS?

and

Would upgrading to Windows 10 Pro, which I haven't done yet but plan to do eventually, result in Bitlocker working better with my RAID 0 configuration (e.g., is RAID 0 newly supported in Windows 10 Pro?)?

I haven't been able to find information about Bitlocker and RAID 0 that is current enough to answer my questions.

Thanks,
Sarah

Preferred Solution: Does Bitlocker in Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 10 Pro support RAID 0 drive configuration?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I've got 2x1TB partition using raid 0 on C: drive which I recently shrunk a little to make a 10GB partition to put "secure" items into. When I try to enable bitlocker encryption on the partition, it gets part of the way through and then my computer dies horribly. It's not a BSOD, the screen is black and windows tells me it can't find its loader.

I reboot a few times and everything is back to normal. Delete the partition, re-create it, format it and try again, same thing.

Bitlocker works ok on my USB keys.

Can anyone give me a clue? I'm wondering if it's the bios throwing a hissy-fit, rather than windows!

Hi Robinson,

Is this a software-based RAID? BITLOCKER is not supported on software-based RAID systems:

BitLocker Drive Encryption in Windows 7: Frequently Asked Questions

For hardware-based RAID systems, whilst all the Microsoft documentation says that it is supported, many people seem to have no success with it - possibly issues with the controller. Some people report success if adding a 3rd drive apparently:

could I add an internal non-raid hard disk drive to my computer and leave my 3 other hard disk drives in a raid 5 configuration?
ASUS tech support said that I could add optical DVD/CD drives to my SATA connections on my mobo is that correct? The mobo manual does not indicate that I can so I don't know if I should believe the tech guy or not (unless the information is buried deeply and briefly in the manual - I sure can't find it in the manual). My IDE controller on the mobo seems to be failing so I want to replace my IDE dvd and cd drives with SATA optical drives.

Hello Guys I need the experience of some of you relating to the installation of Windows 7 on a GPT partition.
My Boss  gave me a Dell Precision T5810 workstation, and for all I know it came with a factory configuration with three disks 2TB configured in RAID 5, but without Operating System.
He asked me to install Windows 7 and so I tried it but still did not succeed.  On initial installation I provided the RAID controller driver but after that  I am not allowed to do anything on the disk partition.
What I find is the following partitions:
Disk 1 Part 1 ESP 500M
Disk 1 Part 2 DIAGS 40GB
Disk 1 Part 3 OS 2 GB
Disk 1 Part 4 UNALLOCATED SPACE 3700 gb
As mentioned on any of the four partitions i can't do anything  even eliminate them,  and I get this error:
Windows can not be installed to the this. The selected disk is of the GPT Partions.
Now my doubt is Windows 7 can not be installed on GPT partitions and I have to convert force into MBR?
The Four partitions found in your opinion were created when the RAID 5 was configured?
If i have to convert to MBR i can delete all the partition in order to installa Windows?
Thanks for the GIOvanni

Hi there
Yesterday my computer was shut down when I returned home.  I may have lost power but I am connected to a UPS that should have kept me safe from any surges.  Turning the computer on, my RAID5 drive (drive letter M) is gone and a mysterious new drive
has appeared, labeled as drive E, also showing as a RAW drive. In disk management, I can see that drive M is its normal size, 11177.94GB.  I am using 4x4TB drives.  Intel Rapid Storage Technologhe shows all four
drives as healthy and functional.  Drive E shows in Disk Management the same as Drive M, and I have no idea how it ended up there and what I should do with it.  My C drive shows up and works normally, where I have my OS and programs installed.
Not sure where to start, but hoping it is just an issue with the MBR?

Again, not one single post in thousands I've helped with in forums about RAID that was positive - every single one was either a problem or a disaster.

And if you already knew the answer then why did you ask?
I qualified my opinion as exactly that yet you still reply without even the most basic human decency.

I responded--even though the above was not written to me. This may or may not be of interest to anyone considering RAID 0 and Windows 10--so I thought I'd repost it here as there may be some folks unfamiliar with how to stripe drives in Windows 10 for RAID 0 performance without having to use either an integrated or dedicated RAID controller & without specific RAID drivers as well.

I was searching this evening for info an the AMD SB950 IDE/AHCI/RAID controller support--which atm does not support RAID mode on an EVO SSD. The problem is that I could not setup RAID normally, from inside UEFI, because then my boot drive--the Samsung EVO 850 won't run--even though it is not in the RAID config. So I had to set my UEFI contorller to AHCI (the only mode the EVO will run on through my AMD SB950), but I wanted to setup a couple of my other drives in RAID 0--without changing the UEFI bios setting from AHCI to RAID.

Over the years I've heard a lot of negative stuff about RAID that simply isn't true, so I responded below to the original poster as follows... Again, hope you find it at least slightly informative..... Read more

Hi,

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 and I am running Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1.

I have been unsuccessful at building a WinPE image that provides BitLocker support. I searched around the internet and found many posts. Eventually, I ended up trying to build it with the various added packages I discovered in the various posts. However, in the end, none worked and this is the message I am getting after booting into my WinPE environment:

manage-bde.exe - Application Error

The instruction at 0xa20afa3b referenced memory at 0x0000013d.
The memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program

Here are the commands I eventually ended up using to build my WinPE image:

A:How to enable BitLocker support (unlock drive) in WinPE 5?

I resolved the issue, but here's how I got to it:

1) I even tried using the 8.0 ADK, but I still got the same error.

2) At one point during my troubleshooting, I stopped just prior to performing the Commit to create the WinPE image. Then I navigated to the <mount directory>\Windows\System32 and ran manage-bde.exe. The result: A Windows error (something to the effect that the program crashed/stopped working).

3) I tried running Notepad.exe and it worked fine.

4) I compared the manage-bde.exe from my mount directory to the one in C:\Windows\System32 using the comp utility and they were identical.

5) I have always been able to run C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe. So I created a "temp" subdirectory in my mount directory and copied C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe. When I tried to run it, I got that error (program crashed/stopped working).

6) Running it from the C:\Windows\System32 directory, however, worked without any issue. This led me to conclude that it required some dependent files in C:\Windows\System32.

7) After a bit more troubleshooting, I discovered that in order for it to run, it needed something in directory C:\Windows\System32\en-US\. I copied that folder I into my "temp" folder on my mount directory and then manage-bde.exe was able to run without any issues.

8) Final solution was to create a subdirectory called "BitLocker" in <mount directory>\Windows\System32, then copy C:\Windows\System32\manage-bde.exe... Read more

I have a dual Raid 1 configuration with (2) identical 500GB (C and 1TB (D drives. When connecting my (2) external hard drives, one of which needs to be named (F (I have numerous files, folders, icons and programs linked to it), I see that (E and (F are the only two drive letters unavailable for use - presumably because they have been allocated as the invisible/dynamic? drives for (C and (D, respectively. How do I know which one's RAID Mirror is? And can I just rename that drive so the letter becomes available without interrupting/changing/affecting the RAID configuration? What I have now is an unallocated drive. It was a BitLocker drive. I checked it several hours ago and saw an update was being downloaded. It was a cumulative update, KB4013429.

Now, here's the kicker. The external drive was turned off! I don't leave it running in a nearly air-tight enclosure for any extended periods of time. I have no idea what happened.

Below is a snip showing the drive layout. I haven't down anythng with it yet. I have my doubts that it can be recovered.

Hi There

I upgraded a HP laptop to the newest windows 10 version and as per organization requirements started bitlocker encryption on the windows drive.  While the encryption was running the user who uses the computer, for some reason had restarted
the computer while encryption was in progress.

After the restart, it showed an error 0xc0000225 "Unable to find file winload.exe"
It was not displaying the Bitlocker unlock screen so as to unlock the drive.
I also saved the recovery key and have it printed.
Although after booting using a win10 usb and using CMD off the bootable usb to try unlock the drive, it did not work.
I used the command  x:\>windows\system32> manage-bde -unlock e: -rp "the 48digit key"
but it said the password wasnt able to unlock the drive. Not sure why as I have the right key.
Also note that I used the new encryption method that works only on windows 10.

I also tried removing the harddisk and connecting it to another PC that has windows 10 version 1511 and when clicking unlock drive it says that I need a newer version of windows to unlock the drive. How can that be when I have the newest version??

The user has some important data to recover and any help is appreciated to unlock the drive
The HDD is also a samsund SSD drive

Whilst Windows Professional does not support encrypting using bitlocker, any version of Windows 7 can unlock pre-existing bitlocker drives going by the following technet article:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...spx#BKMK_Vista

My observation generally correlates with the above. In fact saying Win Pro does not support bitlocker encryption is not correct. I commenced bitlocker encryption on a Windows Ultimate machine, paused it part way through and connected into my Windoes Professional machine and it continued encrypting the device from where it left off!

Question: upon unlocking a bitlocker encrypted drive on a Windows Professional machine, will files I write to it be correctly encrypted as if the same files were being written from a Windows Ultimate machine?

I would seem so.

A:Unlocking Bitlocker Drive in Windows Professional

There's a big difference between unlocking a pre-existing bitlocker drive as compared to encrypting a drive with bitlocker using Windows 7 Pro. Also, the Technet article you referenced says "...you can unlock encrypted removable drives on any version of Windows 7." Based on the fact that bitlocker is not officially supported on Windows 7 Pro, and that Microsoft says only encrypted removable drives can be unlocked, it seems these two caveats alone would make using bitlocker on a Windows 7 Pro machine dicey.

In the alternative, have you considered using a free third party encryption tool like VeraCrypt (which is based on TrueCrypt's coding?) Personally, I wouldn't use an unsupported encryption tool (bitlocker) and risk not being able to access my important files or drives. Just some personal opinion and certainly not meant to be argumentative.

I have a question with regards to mounting an OS drive from another PC in Windows 7 Laptop. (via a docking station Bay)
(this drive has two partitions C: OS, D: Data - both with Bitlocker enabled)
I have tried starting Windows7 from the laptop first (laptop drive has Bitlocker enabled)
After that i have an Win7 OS drive from another PC, loaded in the docking station (this drive is also a Bitlocker protected OS drive) docked with the laptop. Normally, for non Bitlocker drive, the new drive's paritiions will be displayed
without problem. However, the result i have is i can not see the drive from the other PC at all inside Windows 7 started by the laptop OS drive. It appears that this disk is not even recognized at all.

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. I am trying to encrypt my drive using BitLocker. I am saving the key to a USB drive, only encrypting used data, and using new encryption mode. I then run system check before encrypting the drive, and when I restart my computer, I get the following message: "BitLocker could not be enabled. The BitLocker encryption key cannot be obtained from the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). C: was not encrypted."I've done some troubleshooting elsewhere, but can't find any info to help me. I'm running Windows 10 Pro on a Lenovo T440s machine. My TPM is initialized, owned and running, so I'm not sure what to do there. Here are images of my TPM from Device Manager.I'm at a loss, and I definitely need to be able to encrypt my drive. Does anyone have any information? If you need more information about my system, BIOS, etc., I'll be happy to oblige. Thank you.

A:Unable to encrypt drive using BitLocker on T440s running Windows 10

My guess is that you deployed Win10 in legacy mode, instead of UEFI mode.  You can confirm this in msinfo32.exe, look for "BIOS Mode" in the right-hand panel.  It needs to be "UEFI" if you want to use TPM 2.0.

Initially I found that BitLocker on the Go supported removable media like flash drives and external drives. Why isn't a CD/DVD supported since it is considered removable media? Will this support be available in future releases?

A:Will BitLocker or BitLocker on the Go ever support CD/DVD encryption?

Hi,

Bitlocker to Go is not supported on CD/DVD. Your suggestion is valuable, I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel.
Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future releases.

Currently, you may need third party software to encrypt CD/DVD.

Hi folks, Need some help here.  I reformatted (complete reformat with no personal preferences saved) of Windows 10 because of several glitches that were annoying.  I was smart to backup all my documents to an external hard drive that was encrypted with BitLocker.  But once the reformat was complete, the drive is no longer detected.  I can see the drive in Disk Management but it won't pop up in explorer and BitLocker does not prompt me when I plug in.  Help!  My two drives have all my backups and backups of backups!!! I've tried to update all the software/firmware/drivers but to no avail. I'm still under warranty but this is a software issue only I'm certain of it.   Help!

Hi all,

My PC is currently using a single RAID 0 drive that contains my Windows install and all my data in a single partition C:
(I'm well backed up so happy with the risk of RAID0)

The RAID0 drive is setup by my motherboard controller so Windows just sees the one drive.

I am thinking of adding an separate drive for windows, hopefully an SSD.

I would like to do a fresh install of Win7 on the new disk then rename the old RAID0 drive to something different such as D: . Then reorganise it into just a data disk.

My question is.. will the new Win7 installation just see the old RAID0 disk as another disk? I know this would work witha normal disk, but does RAID0 transfer over to a new installation ok?

Hopefully that is clear.

Many thanks
Alan

A:Re-install of windows with RAID 0 drive

i cant say it will definitely work, but if i were to try it, i would disconnect the RAID drive completely, then install the SSD. otherwise you might have trouble with the MBR. once win7 is installed on the SSD, then reconnect the RAID. if it doesnt work, you can reformat it. if it still doesnt work, you can take the two drives out of RAID0 and use them separately.

When I installed windows 7 on my computer, I had forgotten to RAID my dual drives together. Can I do a windows backup onto an external hard drive, then raid my drives together, reinstall windows 7 and then do a restore? I wanna have everything exactly the same but with my drives raided together. Thanks

A:Windows Backup to restore drive after RAID

Hello con3636, welcome to Seven Forums!

A lot of users are having serious issues running Windows 7 from a RAID setup and there is really nothing to be gained with such a configuration; if you're trying to get faster access times you'd have better success using a Solid State Drive (SSD) for a boot drive and having your data on a spinner.

Windows backup2. Rescue & RecoveryQuestion 1: With the set-up as listed above, what is the best  & most effective way to backup a Raid 1 on Windows 7 Pro OS? How do you do it? How often to backup? (I am just a beginner on RAID) Question 2:OR do you use other Back-up/ Imaging software??? (e.g. Acronis, paragon system backup, norton ghost , novabackup, nero backit up)

A:Best Way to Backup a Raid hard drive on Windows 7 ...

RAID-1 is mirroring, so in a way you are always backing up your HDD, in real time.  If one of the HDDs fails, you still have 100% of the data on your other HDD.  I guess it is possible that both of your HDDs could fail at once, in which case you will wish you had a backup.

For Windows 7, I recommend using the "Create System Image" feature of the built-in backup and restore utility.  Then, make sure you create a system repair disc and store it in a safe place, in case it is ever needed to restore a backup.  In addition to this, because you are using RAID, you will need to have the RAID device driver on a memory key somewhere - the repair disc will need it because the RAID driver probably isn't built-in to Win7.

Some people prefer R&R, but I only use it on XP.  For Win7, I use the built-in backup and restore utility - it's quite good.

I run Win XP Pro on a RAID 10 setup. I recently had a power failure and it turns out my UPS was bad. The RAID 10 setup was corrupted - one of the four drive's status was listed as degraded. Unfortunately my first step was to rebuild the RAID array. That took care of restoring the array to optimal status, but I now have to reinstall windows. Here is my problem: the windows set up disk will not recognize the RAID drive. I have it marked as bootable and have rebuilt the array several times without success. The initial installation proceded without any problems. I don't understand what is gioing on. Any thoughts? Thanks.

A:Windows set up disk won't recognize a RAID drive

You need to install the drivers early in the installation process. A prompt to press F6 will appear for about 10-15 seconds, but it doesn't stop the installation process. While it's there, you need to press F6 and have your RAID controller drivers handy to install.

I currently have a AMD mobo RAID 10 array consisting of 4 drives of a total capacity now available of 2TB.

I can change those RAID arrays without effecting the disks. That means I can split the array in two if I want without overwriting the MBR/partition table. That means no data is destroyed at all, but Windows won't boot from the changed (now smaller) array.

I have tried two things:
- Automatic startup repair, will just exercise the drive for a countless amount of time, takes much too long, not sure what it is doing, I just rebooted.

After:
- Refresh Windows, but complains the Drive is locked and won't do anything, from the console window I can see now drivers and I don't know about any partitioning tools from the command line still in Windows.

These things I got I believe by booting from the Windows 8.1 Pro install DVD.

So Refresh Windows never works (to my recollection) since it always complains about locked drives and Automatic Startup Repair I let it run for 15 minutes, but it hadn't done anything.

So when I delete the arrays and recreate the original one, Windows starts again as usual no problem.

Maybe there's something about drive geometry no longer being right, I don't know. I guess this doesn't work then and I can only change the arrays by reinstalling my system; in that sense.

Windows *tries* to load but then it fails with an error message and quickly reboots.

Only troubleshooting I can do at this point is to run a Linux live DVD and see what happens to my... Read more

A:Windows don't boot after (RAID) hard drive size changes

No one?

I change the 'geometry' of the hard disk, which is a raid array. Subsequently the "hard disk" visible to Windows changes as per raid driver) but the partition remains the same and remains accessible (e.g. to Linux) -- but now Windows won't boot anymore

- it can read the files just fine
- it gives and error and reboots early in the boot process
- automatic startup repair doesn't do anything, at least not during the first 10-15 minutes.

- i want to know of a way to boot a changed Windows 8/10 on this system without reinstalling Windows; that is to say; I want to know of a way to fix this boot problem without a reinstall.

Is this possible? and if so, how I can I do this? I plan to do this on Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+ MB using four KingDian 120GB SSDs in a Syba 4 Port SATA III raid HyperDuo PCIe 2.0 x4 card? I've found a customer review on Amazon.com that supports
this but I thought I would run it by this community as well.

Thanks in advance,
