Preferred Solution: Icons on Start But Not Apps Screen ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Icons on Start But Not Apps Screen ?

Hello Emperor,

Sure, you can. Anything that you "Pin to Start" from another location will not be added to the Apps screen. It only pins to the Start screen.

Start Screen - Pin or Unpin App, Folder, or Drive in Windows 8

If you like, you can add and remove items from the Apps screen though. Be sure to read the warning in the tutorial below though.

Hi guys,

Just got this error and couldn't find anything like this solved.
The icons (or maybe the apps) are missing from the start menu.

Thanks,
Gabriel.

A:Start menu icons/apps missing

If you have one you can try a system restore to a time before this happened. You could also try down loading the ISO from MS and doing a in-place repair install. Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums
To do the in-place repair mount the ISO by double clicking on it. Then look for the install.exe and clicking on it. This will repair Windows 10 without you loosing anything and hopefully fixing your problem.

After disabling and uninstalling Cortana, Edge and others as well as Search I ended up with 2 dead icons in the All apps menu one for Search and one for Edge. When I drag the Search icon to the desktop it's named as:

I also tried in all the usual places where the shortcuts are supposed to be but nothing worked and the icons are still there so wondering if anyone has an idea how they can be removed if at all. It's more of a cosmetic problem as I have no issues with Windows otherwise

I have upgraded to windows 10 from 8.1 and been using it for the last week now with no problems.
Today, during a mandatory update my pc went blue screen and said it had to restart.
Once it restarted it updated and booted fine.
However after the update I realized that my start menu stopped working.
If I press it nothing shows up. It is the same with my search menu.
Also none of my taskbar icons will work like the volume and notifications.
I have searched the internet and tried all the solutions provided like windows powershell and uninstalling antivirus and restarting explorer but nothing seems to work for me.
I can't reformat and clean install at the moment because it's really inconvenient for me and have some important files and big programs that I can't back up.

Can anyone please provide me a solution for this bug?
Is there anyway I can reinstall the last update again manually?
Or if I revert back to win 8.1 would this problem still persist?
I can't afford to lose anything since I am away and need my computer for work.

Got a weird bug that's just happened:

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.

They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.

Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.

A:Some App icons in Metro All Apps screen missing

I tried deleting the icon cache file file but it didn't fix it.
I also tried installing a new software and it too did not get an icon created in the menu.
However, if I pin it to start menu the app's icon works there.

I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

(edit...vimeo was taking forever to process)

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop. Has anyone seen this effect, and if so is there some registry key somewhere that is needed to fix it?

TIA

I recently had to refresh my laptop which meant re-upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 with all the updates involved. Everything seemed to be working fine then I was prompted to do an update for NVidia GeForce Experience. I don't know if that's what caused the following issue or not but now when I go to the Start screen and click the arrow down to see my apps - the apps overlap the start screen making it impossible to see anything. It's as though the start screen isn't moving up when the apps appear and so I see both screens at the same time. Any ideas on what is causing this and how I might fix it? There are some things to check initially - UAC must be enabled, the Windows Firewall Service must be running, and you must not be logged on with the built-in Administrator account. You want to make sure all of the above is set before doing any other tshooting.

My Windows 8 install was working fine until after some updates installed on 11/16/2012. Since then, I'm unable to start Apps from the Start screen, access the Charms bar, etc. I can get to my desktop by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch Task Manager. Once there, I can use my desktop apps, run commands, etc. I have uninstalled the updates, but my Start screen still isn't working.

My problem seems the same or similar to what is described by "Troubleshooting steps to use when Windows apps won't start" at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-apps-wont-start/. I have tried the suggested ideas except for "Switch to a local account." I am using a "Microsoft" account, and I would like to convert to a local account. I know how to do this via Users in PC Settings, but I can't get to PC Settings from the Start screen. (I have tried accessing via the Charms bar by moving my mouse to the upper-right corner, pressing WinKey + C, and also pressing WinKey + I; nothing works.)

Any suggestions on how I can convert my user account from a Microsoft account to a Local account? For example, can this be done via the desktop or with a command that I can run from the command prompt. Note, I have also tried clicking "Make changes to my account in PC Settings" within Control Panel's User Accounts screen. When I click it though, nothing happens.

Thanks for any tips.

Matt

Hi guys,

I've just recently brought and have upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 8 Pro.

After installing, my apps were working fine, I would click on them, and everything would work like normal.

Although, after installing a couple of games, they have seemed to have stopped working. So I did a system restore, great they are working again. So, to see what the problem was, I took into account what I was doing to see if it conflicted with the apps working.

Unfortunately, I could not seem to pin down what the problem is. When I go to click onto the apps, some either just doing nothing, or others will show up the opening screen, as if I was about to go in it, but then just goes straight back to the start screen.

I've reinstalled it, not working. Every time I try to do a reset, it gets to about 68% then says an error occurs and rolls back its actions.

Any ideas on what is causing this to happen?

I have the files burn on a CD DVD+RW drive and have tried it on a USB.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm trying to set up the cleanest interface I possibly can on my Windows 8.1 PC, and I've spent a lot of time cleaning up my Apps folder so that only useful things are displayed, and they're in an order that's helpful to me.

I'm now trying to set up my Start Screen, and there are some things I'd like to pin to it (the My Documents folder, various websites, etc) that I don't think of as applications and don't want to see in the Apps folder. However, anything I pin to Start shows up in Apps as well. Is it possible to pin something to the Start Screen but not have it show up in Apps? I'm okay with using registry tweaks or 3rd party software to do this!

A:How can I pin a program to the Start Screen, but not Apps?

Everything installed on the PC shows up on the Apps screen. It used to be called "All Apps". You then pick and chose from that list what's pined to the Start Screen. They aren't moved from one to the other, they are duplicated. If you start removing things from the Apps screen it more than likely will disappear from the Start Screen too. If that happens you'll have no easy way to launch that program. I'm not saying don't do it, just don't be surprised if you break something in the process.

Been using WIndows 8 for over a month now, and since I have Start8, I can honeslty say, I never really use any of the metro apps. I've downloaded a few (ie netflix, Cnet) but at the end of the day, just find it easier to open google chrome, and go to the website. What are others opinions on the apps and your usage?

A:DO most of you use the Start screen Metro Apps?

Nope I barely use them at all. I used them a couple of times when I first installed windows 8, but then they were too buggy (sometimes wouldn't open at all, crashed all the time), and their interfaces were just weird and too different. I'm a fan of metro, I switched back to 7 just yesterday to get ready for 8. I actually miss the speed of 8, and I used metro as a quick launch screen. But metro apps are awkward.

I have installed several programs ( i.e. Adobe Reader, Firefox, etc.) and made them the default programs for certain file types. Does this affect what is displayed on the Start screen (Firefox and not IE, iTunes and not Music)?

This still would not explain why other installed apps are not being displayed, i.e. People.

A:How to Rename Start Screen Apps?

I'm pretty sure it has less to do with the fact that "this is Windows 8" and more to do with it being an App. My guess is that the App name is part of the signature id and tied into the Store for security reasons. It's not like you can rename Apps on your smartphone. Well probably could with Android but I'm sure you would need to root the phone in order to do it.

I started having a number of problems recently on my Asus laptop, which is running Windows 8.1:

--When navigating to the Start Screen and trying to click on one of the apps (for example, the Maps program), the system immediately freezes and can't be recovered unless I use Ctrl-Alt-Del and sign out, then sign in again

--Unable to shut down the computer as I normally did in the past: sweeping the mouse from the right, clicking Settings-->Power-->Shut Down. The system again freezes or doesn't open these options when attempted.

--Certain desktop shortcuts no longer work: I double click on one of them and nothing happens (program won't open). The same with hyperlinks in word documents; just recently they worked fine, but now when clicked they won't navigate to the webpage. Recently I had to re-install Adobe Flash Player, but when I click on the .exe file it won't execute. Opening Windows Media Player or some other programs is the same: they freeze or don't open at all.

The problems probably started within the last 1-2 weeks or so, and may have coincided with the most recent Windows update (KB3074219).

I can still browse the Internet and use other basic functions, but I'm wondering what might be causing all these issues suddenly to occur at once, and how to fix them? Suggestions from corrupted user account to sync problems to etc to etc are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation. This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows. I have, in the past, been a defender of Microsoft, but I am rapidly changing my mind. About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system. I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. My original start screen Metro Apps are kaput. They act like they will start, but just sort of flash, etc., and fail to start--including IE. I found a variety of possibly related threads in our forums. Below is info about some of the questions and suggestions that came up in the threads as well as about other matters:

1. Installed 32-bit Win8 Pro cleanly awhile back using full non-upgrade install disc made from Technet ISO.
2. The apps used to work as advertised, and i have had zero problems with my install except for the apps.
3. I have never done anything to UAC registry-wise or in any other way.
4. I am running BitDefender 2013, and the program has never caused a problem. BitDefender has never found a problem except for cookies, particularly tracking cookies. It isolates them, and I delete them.
5. Window firewall has never caused a problem.
6. I searched "everywhere," and I did not find anything that is likely to resolve my problem.
7. I did an automatic repair and ran sfc /scannow for starters--trying for an easy simple fix.

At this point, I am not ready to do a refresh, reset, or reinstall since I never use the apps, but I am interested in figuring out how to fix the problem in a hopefully less labor intensive way so that others will have access to the fix. Also, presumably I could fix things using a system restore image, but don't want to go that route unless absolutely necessary.

A:Original Start Screen Metro Apps Kaput

Problem Solved: Backed up all files to external drive since I didn't yet know where I would end up in fixing things. Created new local admin user temporary account. The apps worked. Restarted every time I created or deleted an admin account. Copied everything to the new account. Deleted original local adm account, including user folder in C: > Users (had to take ownership). Created new local admin user account with same name as my original one. Copied everything over. Deleted the temporary account. Tested the apps again. Made new System Image Backup (see sig). Did a little personalization. All is good.

I am glad I didn't have to use prior system image backups in solving my problem. Not sure how far I would have had to go back to get to where the apps were working properly--since I almost never use the apps. Incidentally, system restore was not an option for me. For some reason, even when my Win8 machine was new, maybe 5-6 years ago, it has never been able to do system restores consistently. Have tried them under Win8 after new partition set up/clean non-upgrade install for Win8--using disc mentioned in prior post.

My only disappointment, if you can call it that, is that I didn't need to try an "old-fashion" repair install using my disc mentioned in prior post. It should be equivalent to a system builder disc I think. I've been wondering for a long time if either of these disc types can be used to do old-fashion" repair installs." Maybe someday I'll ge... Hello all,

I am new here, although I did come here quite a few times and many times found the solution :-)

My problem is (I am on 1511) that some icons of removed (by powershell) apps reapeared, and there seem to be no way to get rid of them. Nothing I have found had worked (like going to start menu folder and deleting the shorcuts).

Namely it's MicrosoftWindowsAlarms, MicrosoftZuneMusic, MicrosoftWindowsPhotos, and in Apps the name looks like this: @{Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_10.1607.1991.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwems-resource--Microsoft.WindowsAlarms-Resources-AppName-Text}

Moreover, few days ago some "new" apps have materialized - that was a shock........no update, nothing, out of blue I had about 10 unwanted apps in my all apps...............crazy.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Normally I deffer updates by turning the service off and/or metered connection. Now I have left it on by mistake...........still should not install against my will some unwanted apps..........and as I said, no update.....

A:Icons of uninstalled apps showing in All apps

Those left-over icons may be a result of deleting programs instead of using Control Panel, Programs and Features to uninstall the programs. When a program is installed the install routine puts the program files in either C:\Program Files [32-bit] or C:\Program Files for 64-bit or C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit depending upon which version of the OS is in use. It will also create the icons, write support files to C:\Windows or other Folders and create Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the program. The uninstall routine is supposed to get rid of everything associated, don't know if PowerShell can do it as cleanly.

I started having a number of problems recently on my Asus laptop, running Windows 8.1:
I can still browse the Internet and use other basic functions, but I'm wondering what might be causing all these issues suddenly to occur at once, and how to fix them?  I do not recall installing any new software recently or making any notable changes to the system, so I'm at a loss as to the cause.  The problem probably started within the last 1-2 weeks or so, and may have coincided with the most recent Windows update (KB3074219).  I have also seen some note about "... As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?

The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button - once you figure out how to configure it and get rid of all the junk.)

A:Getting Apps Screen when I try to go to Start Screen

Try this:

Right click the taskbar and select properties.
Select the "Navigation" tab

Make sure you have item "Show the Apps view..etc" turned OFF

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.
Cheers

Is there a way to align the icons in the Start Screen of Win 8.1? The customization feature won't do it and there is no apparent way to align the icons as the user may want to: (e.g. 8 icons in two neat columns).

When I try to align the icons the snap back and forth and it is very difficult, if not impossible to place them where I want.

Many thanks in advance...

A:Win 8.1 Start Screen Icons Alignment

You can create groups of icons. Just drag the icon to the right of a group, and you will notice a bar appear indicating that when you drop the icon, it forms a new group.

Also, keep in mind that icons "flow". So if you remove an icon from early in the flow, then the icons drop back and fill in the empty space. So it works best to start at the first icon in a group and work your way down (icons work in 2 column pairs, so left, right, down and left, right, down and left, right.. etc..). Move icons from later in the list to earlier in the list, not the other way around. Otherwise things move.

Hello lluukkman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully undo and fix this.

Hope this helps,

Hello,

I have a dell xps 710 that is running XP. Yesterday, I was attempting to update a driver and reboot my system and when it came back on all I say was my wallpaper and nothing else. I tried to get task manager to come up, but nothing. I tried a variety of ways to get something to come on, but still nothing. I went into Safe Mode...and still nothing. No icons..no nada.

I keep seeing a variety of things to do in order to try and get it to boot up and am really confused as to which one I should try.

When I put in my recovery disk I get a menu that says to pick the following options:

When I get the "welcome to set up" screen, should I choose

* To set up Windows XP now, press enter

or

* To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

Different people seem to be saying different things. I also read that you can go in and do the following:

* Boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console
* Run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file
* Delete the C:\Boot.ini file
* Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild"
* Run Fixboot

And lastly, my pc told me to put in the service pack 2 data disk. If I download the application at work and burn it to a disk..should I burn it as a bootable disk or just a data disk?

I would appreciate any help. Many thanks.

A:Blank start up screen/No icons

Try this to see if you can get it to boot..

Reverting back to a pre-Service Pack state may help resolve the issue. It's possible that some system files were damaged during the driver install.

Go to this page and scroll down to the section that instructs you on removing service packs from the recovery console.

Don't mess with your boot.ini, it's working fine. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to boot at all.

RE: Windows 8.

Something strange happened. I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.

My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.

Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.

2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.

3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.

I've googled this problem and see this is a known issue, except with slightly different symptoms. But I can't get it resolved. All suggestions require going to Microsoft's Site, for this problem. They say that you have to use the hotfix. I contacted Microsoft, from that site and they sent me an email with a link that just takes me back to the site.

I've run SCF and it found no problems.

I have gone through a complete update, using Windows update and it didn't fix the problem. Need a solution to this.

Where on earth is this hotfix (a link to the actual hotfix; not some website that goes round and round).

I am getting quite used to the start screen on Windows 8 (as opposed to a start menu (?) - this change in nomenclature is sure to confuse users...)
I followed the tip on organizing into groups - quite helpful and useful.

However, once I have my start screen organized the way I like, I find that within groups icons tend to 'shift' positions randomly - which is irritating.

Just wondering if someone has a way to 'lock' them so once they are in position - one would think MS would have thought of that already - thanks!

UPDATE:
Hmmm - noticed something interesting - I am on a dual monitor set-up and when I open the start screen on a different monitor the organization of the start screen changes. Maybe that is why it is not an option (?) ...

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64. One day I turned my computer on and it booted up to just my desktop background. My icons, the task bar, even the windows login screen were gone, it was just my desktop background. I could see and move my mouse, and right click for the desktop menu, but nothing else would work or show up. CTRL+ALT+DEL would just make the screen go black.

I read about how it could be a corrupt user profile or something like that. I followed most advice I read, disabling non-microsoft services, booting to safe mode, making a new user profile, deleting certain registries entries, running system restore. Nothing worked (Although everything would appear in safe mode).

I was getting mad so I said screw it, and just formatted the hard drive and and reinstalled Windows. It installed just fine, but when it booted up to the desktop for the first time, everything was gone again. So I used a separate Windows 7 Home Edition 64x I have for my wife's computer, and installed that to just see what happened, same thing.

I have no idea where to go from here >_< Any help would be greatly appreciated.
