Disk Cleanup Mgr not deleting a file

Q: Disk Cleanup Mgr not deleting a file

On my Windows XP when I run the Disk Cleanup Mgr, all the files go down to zero, except for this one, "WebClient/Publisher Temp Files". I cannot seem to even locate this in the system to check it out. Dell gave me this list to do to resolve, but it involved deleting any found in the *.log files off the C:drive, and on to deleting all found files in *.chk, *.bak,*.old. When I pulled up the first one, *.log, alot of things came up that I was not comfortable with deleting...looked as if they took up alot of space and maybe I was in the wrong thing and would mess up the system even more than it is now. Any help will be very appreciated. Thanx!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How about posting the log of what they said to delete. Maybe we can pick out the ones that are safe to delete, or the one's you need to keep. Whichever is smaller.

I recently ran a Disk Cleanup as part of my regular maintenance on my new computer. It had over 2.18GB of files to cleanup. That seemed a little high considering I run it every week to 2 weeks. It said it deleted all the files. I ran the Scan Disk again to be sure and it still had 2.18GB of files. I ran it again. Same result. I have a ton of room on the computer right now, but this could be a major problem down the road. Does anyone know why my Disk Cleanup would appear to be working and then not delete anything? Is there a solution for this problem? Thanks!

So recently I tried to use the disk cleanup to try to get some space off my laptop

Disk cleanup scanned and recognized 1.7GB worth of windows update cleanup files, so I then proceed to delete them

Restarted my laptop multiple times but it seems the files were not deleted

I retried everything and ran everything using run as administrator but still did not work, even used shutdown -s -t 0 to turn off my laptop

did a sfc /scannow and the only errors in the CBS log is related to my AMD radeon card and should have nothing to do with the disk cleanup / windows update

Im running out of ideas about why the disk cleanup didnt delete my windows update cleanup files, is it possible to delete them manually? also im a ccleaner user, so if that conflicts with disk cleanup do tell me.

Currently 95 GB of space is being taken up from files located in my WinSxS folder. I have tried running Disk Cleanup with the option to remove temporary files selected (which I think is supposed to remove unnecessary files from WInSxS). Disk Cleanup even
says that I can free up 91GB, but when I opt to delete the files Disk Cleanup never actually deletes them? I have tried rebooting my machine a couple times and keep getting the same outcome.
I have also tried using CCleaner. (Didn't work either)
Any ideas on how I can get these files deleted / what is going on?
Thanks

I have Windows Server 2012 R2 and it is my file server and it auto syncs user's file every minute. I have 3 disks. The primary partition (Disk 0) and two others (Disk 1 & Disk 2). My question does not include the primary
partition.

I shrunk Disk 2 so that I had unallocated space. I then extended Disk 1 using the unallocated space from Disk 2 creating spanned volume on Disk 1 (extended volume on Disk 2). It did not do what I wanted so I want to 'undo' it. Can
I just delete the spanned volume on Disk 2 (space that added to Disk 1)? Or more accurately if I'm going to delete the spanned volume on Disk 2, will it affect my users' files?

HI folks...

Hope someone can help with my problem...

I have an external USB disk drive which until yesterday was functioning perfectly. Yesteday evening i cleaned up the drive, and backup lots of data.

When connecting today windows (XP SP2 - fully updated) popped up the new hardware found wizard - strange as the disk has been in use for over a year on all installed USB ports..

Initially i though it a local machine OS issue, but have ruled that out by connecting to another pc which has recongised the disk on previous occasions...

so...( please correct me if im wrong) either ive deleted something on the external disk that i should not have, or the disk is faulty for some reason ( assuming this as the problem occurs on multiple machines)

any ideas please folks.. ?

thanks

My workplace is having a computer with 20GB HDD split into 2 partitions, 10GB each and is installed with XP Pro. All this while I ma having space problem so I tried using the file compression in disk cleanup utility.

How happy I am that i gave me almost 500MB in space but during the next few days, windows startup seem to be getting much longer. Expecially the part where the windows logo appear behind a black backgroud, the loading seem to take like a minute or two.

It hasn't done this before. Is this bcuz of the compressed files, how do i uncompressed it again. I tried using defrag but still nothing, file fragmentation remains at over 50%, I think it is bcuz of the compressed file

Hey guys, im kinda confused how these 2 differentiate. I know that programs use temp files to load faster and sometimes refuse to delete on computer shutdown so its not my problem there.

My problem is what is the difference between temp files and temporary internet files? Is temporary internet files only for Internet explorer or is it for all web browsers?

Do other web browsers such as firefox use temp files? (I don't want to delete cookies histories, favorites, tabs etc) I ask because I have a 10GB temp folder.

My other 2 concerns are windows update cleanup and system error crash dump. Is it safe to remove those via disk cleanup or should I use another program? (ive heard some people say that even after selecting their options certain files/folders still remain

A:Disk cleanup, difference between temp file options + concerns

Temp files are temporary files that are used for programs that are loaded on your computer.

Temp Internet files are files used by Internet Browsers & are kept separate from the computer temp files. All browsers as far as I know use temp internet files.

Widows Disc Clean up can be used for cleaning up Windows Updates & Error Crash Dump files & it usually does a good job. I use about once a week if the file build up is large, but I always leave all the recent Windows Updates for a week or so before doing a clean up. I also get rid of the Crash Dump ones as well at the same time.

If you just run Win Disc Clean up it does not clean up Windows Updates or the Crash Dump ones, but it will show the temp & internet temp files that can be cleaned up if you wish. To clean these up you can use Run as Administrator to start it & it will list the Win Update & Crash Dump files that will be cleaned up.

Sys restore is the command line rstrui.exe
but rstrui.exe /? does not give optional parms

Hello 7,

This is how to create shortcuts for the Advanced Disk Cleanup feature. I keep mine in my Start Menu
These shortcuts do not require batch files or command window, and they execute immediately. Just follow the steps below!

NOTE: You MUST be logged in as an administrator to complete this tutorial.

Advanced System Cleanup: Configure Options Shortcut

1. Right click on the desktop and select New/Shortcut
2. Insert this for the location
Code:
C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe /sagesetup
NOTE: You MUST leave a space between 'cleanmgr.exe' and '/sagesetup' or this shortcut will not work.

3. Press Next

4. Name the shortcut anything you wish
5. Click Finish
You should have a shortcut that looks like this

6. Right click on the shortcut and select 'Properties'

7. Customize the "hover" text by filling in the 'Comment' field.
8. Click the 'Advanced' button9. Select the option for 'Run as administrator'
The shortcut is complete. Now when you double click it you will have a options dialog for configuring all of the advanced cleanup features.

So I had hibernation enabled (Saves contents of RAM to hard disk and powers the machine off). One day I used disk cleanup to get rid of TEMP files and such. I mistakenly had the "Hibernation file cleaner" box selected- so when I performed the cleanup, the hibernation file was deleted and hibernation disabled. But it wasn't just disabled- In power options in control panel, it's no longer an option anywhere. Under "what to do when the power button is poressed" in the advanced power options, it still remembers that I had Hibernate selected- but if I open the pulldown menu, the option is actually gone. I can't reenable it because it isn't even there. How do I get it back? I've tried everything I can think of, including creating a file in the root of the hard drive "hiberfil" (no extension), which is what the hibernation file is called. its as if Windows never had support for this feature at all.

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.

In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.

I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).

I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

Suggestions anyone?

Well, as the title suggests, I'm having an issue with Disk Cleanup with a new SSD I recently purchased. In all my years with HDDs I never had this problem. I've been running Windows 8.1 with an HDD for over a year now with no such problem so this is quite new & odd to me. The Windows Update Cleanup feature in Disk Cleanup always worked for me with a HDD. If there was ever a time it didn't work, I certainly can't recall. I'm assuming it's something in the way SSDs are built vs. standard HDDs. Though again, this is my first SSD so, I rally don't have others to compare it to.

So, essentially when Disk Cleanup gets to the Windows Update Cleanup part, it hangs:

I tried:

sfc /scannow & I tried:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

But, when I get to to Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth it hangs:

It's been a while since I had to do any major PC repairs & this is my first personal run in with this particular issue & maybe I'm just out of touch. Maybe missed a few steps? Can somebody help me out? This is the SSD that I have if that helps Kingston High Performance SATA Solid-State Drives (SSD) for Laptops, Desktops and Servers in 60GB, 120GB, 180GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities.

I just have to empty a SD card; compressing its contents to a 7zip-file takes too much time, and if I have to access the files quickly, I prefer to use a mountable filetype. Thus the requirement to quickly create a VHDX-file, then mount it using the context
menu.
Tested using Windows 8.1 without Hyper-V-Role installed.
First, you need to create an empty vhdx-File as a template.
You already have to specify the maximum size this vhdx is allowed to expand to, in my case 255 GiB (255 GiB × 1024 MiB/GiB = 261120 MiB). This can be placed in either your user profile or shared for all users:

Current User: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\All Users: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\
To create the template:
1. Start an elevated command prompt
2. Run diskpart.exe
3. Enter the following commands:
create vdisk file=C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx type=expandable maximum=261120
attach vdisk
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs label="Blank Virtual Disk" quick
assign letter=z
detach vdisk
exit
4. Once the template is in place, just run this command:
reg.exe add HKCR\.vhdx\Windows.VhdFile\ShellNew /f /v FileName /t REG_SZ /d Virtual-Hard-Disk.vhdx
Voilą!
Now you just have to right-click in any file explorer window, also on remote network shares, select New > Hard Disk Image File and rename the file as you wish!

Good Morning,

Is there anyway to speed up the process? All PC's are running WindowsXP service pk 2.

Thanks for any help or insight you can give.

A:Disk cleanup ?

It does not matter how long it takes to run a disk cleanup all that matters actually is that it is done properly. There are lots of reasons that one computer will take longer than another.

1 The speed of the computer.

2 How much stuff is on the hard drive

3 The size of the hard drive - the larger ones will take longer

4 The speed of the hard drive 5600 RPM drives will take longer than 7200 RPM drives

5 If the computer is infected that could make it go longer also

I could keep on going but that will take too long but I am sure you get the idea. If the disk cleanup is running OK and doing its job then it is OK.

A:disk cleanup bug??

This is a known item, and appears after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10. It's related to Windows Update files that are heavily cross-linked on disk, which causes them to be reported as larger than actual size. If you run this Google Search you'll see this item has been widely discussed in the community. It turns out to be about 900 MB of on-disk info, if memory serves, so it's nowhere near as big a thing as it may seem!

Yesterday I performed a disk cleanup on my computer because I thought it was time.

Today: I was playing a game (the Sims) and (it's hard to explain if you've never played the sims. The people, when they perform actions, have a popup over their heads, explaining to you what they are doing...

Well, today, I was playing and one of my sims when going to perform an action had a popup over his head reading "Missing Animation".

Also I noticed that when a sim walked, just once, that they weren't walking normally. They were just tilting side to side, no legs moving, yet they were moving forward.

Could this have anything to do with the disk cleanup. I mean it did take me about an hour to compress files on my computer. I had a lot to compress.

I also defragged my computer, (there was a message saying that some of the files could not be defragged), but that shouldn't have anything to do with the game messing up, should it.

A recent System Restore did not go well and now some files are damaged. Among them is cleanmgr.exe or Disk Cleanup.
Everytime I run it, it just gets an error than closes. I was wondering where I could download a copy of it so I can replace my old error filled one with the new one.

A:Disk Cleanup

Can you not try another restore point. When you click on system restore it should give you the option of trying a earlier date. You could also try pressing f9 on boot up and click on repair my computer.

Another option is Vista recovery disc.Google vista recovery disc and get it from a safe site like pc world. Its a free download just download the file and burn it onto a disc then pop in your your dvd drive and see if that helps.

I used Disk Cleanup yesterday to clean all files on Drive: "C". It cleaned out all the files on my "J" & "K" Flashdrives which were plugged in at the time. What happened? Why? How can I get these files back?
Thanks in advance for all help.

Good news. You can salvage your files using the utility "recuva". Keep that in mind if you have sensitive files you thought were permanently deleted.

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File Recovery - Home

I left my Xp Home PC running Disk Cleanup (yeah, from system tools) and when I returned, the famous ...can't find file must reinstall windows - do you want to run recovery now..etc was on the screen.

My hard drive was wiped clean!. Folder structure was still there but there were hardly any files...anywhere! Windows files included - had empty folders everywhere.

Don't even remember what I did (in shock), but in trying to recover I ended up with a folder on my C: drive (once I got Windows reinstalled) called "My Backup -- 04-05-06 1621"). I suppose it was supposed to be a backup of my current files prior to executing the failed rcovery. The only thing in the backup folder are the same thing I had - empty (for the most part) folders. It is useless. I have spent the last few days restoring my PC to pre-disaster shape but cannot find a way to delete the darn MY Backup folder and it drives me nuts.

Apparently, I had some folders set to private and now clicking on some folders or subfolders gives you "is not accessible - Access Denied" . Can't open 'em, can't delete em... Just want to get rid of the entire backup folder - it serves no purpose but to remind me of the black day!

Any advice?

My Disk Cleanup gets to about 5% and then stops. Can you tell me how to get it working? My hard drive has only 6% space left (about 2G) and disk defragmenter needs 10% to work. I'm stuck until I can get some of this stuff off the computer.

I understand what defragment does but I?m not clear about disk cleanup.

Can someone please explain?

And also, please advise me if this is not the most appropriate discussion for this post.

Hi,

I have been noticed that there are not as many options in Disk Clean Up I disabled Hibernation so that would not be listed but what about memory dump does this only get listed if the computer BSODS and restarts??

A:Disk Cleanup

Hello Wizkid,

There is nothing at that image link.

Yes, that item will not show up unless there is information in the memory dump file though.
