I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

If it only spikes for a very short time, it is OK. Maybe it's normal for your game. Have you compared this to your friend's PC ?

For a while now my laptop lenovo y510p(with the 2 graphic cards ver.) is getting 100% disk usage spikes this greatly lowers the speed and causes massive fps drops when playing games, usually it will last 30sec-2min, they come at random sometimes just 1 or 2 and then nothing for few hours sometimes very regular. I was googeling for solution a few times now but with no success. Is there any solution to this? or at least is there a way to maybe find whats causing it or narrowing down the suspects?

how it looks on performance manager during playing CSGO(fps dropped from around 200 to around 50), also this happens even when iam just on desktop: https://puu.sh/wxt9N/ba8154f52f.png

A:Disk usage 100% spikes

Please run this
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processmonitor.aspx

save the extracted files to a new folder in your program files
close all other apps
open process monitor application
follow this procedure
https://askleo.com/i_have_constant_..._why_how_can_i_tell_what_program_is_doing_it/

On first opening process monitor you will see on the bottom left it gathering data
allow a couple of minutes and then press ctrl and e to capture or click the third icon on top bar - the magnifying glass
now click the tools tab and click file summary another window opens on top of the main process monitor window
enlarge that window and click by path tab - probably already selected
using the lower bar scroll right to show the path column and if necessary hold mouse on heading of path top right to extend

Click read column to show usage in descending order
look to the path to check what is using

Do the same with write column

The WriteB and Read B are bytes per second
when monitoring was active

then when you have identified what is using read write activity - apart of course from process monitor - double click that entry and the main process monitor window will show ONLY the details for that activity
On that window any entry can then be examined in detail by examining image path company etc or double click on an entry will open another window showing event etc.

When you close the process monitor windows and open the app again it will open a small window informing you tha... Read more

Hello, I've been having this problem now for months. Games and general things are freezing up because of high disk spikes.

I've watched multiple videos, disabled services, ran disk checks, virus checks, multiple clean installs, changed my performance to high, followed numerous "fixes" that isn't working for me.

As of right now, I'm trying to pinpoint the exact problem to save myself some money. A failing hardrive? or a bad windows disk?

Thanks in advance.

A:100% disk usage spikes.

Have you tried typing "Clean" in the windows search box.... "Disk Cleanup" will light up blue above your typing. Click that and Windows will ask what drive you want to clean up. Click "OK" Then a screen will pop up that gives you options of what to delete. If you click the "clean system files" button at the lower left, you can get rid of lots of hidden items, like Windows update files, Old Windows versions and installation files. This can gain you some space back.

I have an issue that has been happening since last week i think. The problem is that even with the computer in idle the disk usage has these spikes. When i want to play a simple .mp4 file it freezes several times and the all computer freezes when the spikes reach 100 %. I don't know what is causing this issue.

A:Disk usage spikes when nothing is running

Just Windows doing some housekeeping. You would have to use System Internals Process Explorer, to dig down into what process is doing that. If your computer is freezing when playing music. The question comes to mind of what the program is that you are using to listen to .mp4 files.

Hey, I've had this problem where my disk usage would spike to 100% before going back down to like 2%. I looked at countless forum posts and different sites and I found something which was a temporary fix, which was turning off tips about windows...
That worked for a while, and it just makes the intervals in-between the spikes longer, and now my memory has started to spike pretty high to about 99%, and wont come back down. When it does this I have to do a hard shut down as my pc just slows to unusable...
I also tried disabling ndu.sys in the registry, which didn't help either
I know it is not my RAM as I have tried it with other RAM and I still get the problem...

I am thinking of just restoring my PC back to Windows 7 soon if I cant get this fixed.

Thanks

For the past month I've had disk usage spikles that cause my to lag and stutter in short bursts that interrupt games, music, and youtube videos. It first begaiin with my Mushkin ssd 120gb which I attributed to be the problem so i swapped it out for my current Sandisk 128gb ssd which seemed to fix the problem for about 3 days. Now its back and not as bad as it was with my first ssd but I'm still getting the 100% usage spikes and stutter. I used the SF tool and will attach some screenshots as well. Thanks in advance. I've been setting myself up to do an OS install. I wanted to do by "slipstreaming" a CD with the OS and SP2 included ala Fred Langa InfoWeek 9/20/2004. To do so I have to have an extra gig on my drive. I've got my OS and aps on 15G partition of an 80G ATA drive and as I got ready to do the above I start getting low disk space warnings. After deleting a few unneeded aps to free up the space, I find I'm losing it back or rather the freed space is filling back up. I weekly use AdAware, Spybot, ZoneAlarm w/antivirus and monthly Panda, so I thought I was virus free. Maybe not! Anyway, I think I'm a candidate to ask if you folks would look at a HiJack log. What is the current method of using it? Thanks

The hard disk of my laptop T510 has carshed. This means that when I start my laptop, it does not boot up. It displays an error message that it is unable to access the hard disk. I tried putting that one into another laptop and it was unable to detect this hard disk. It is considering it as a raw disk.

Let me know how to resolve this issue.

I have tried many method like blocking antivirus, set up virtual memory and stop the superfetch service but it still remains unchanged. 2) Lag window interface. When I need to open some software I have to wait for laptop hanging for 3-5 seconds every time. 3) Abnormally long window update time. The update runs at least half an hour for installing. Due to this, even shutting down takes a long time and seldom I force it to shut down because it is very unresponsive. I observed the laptop for a few days and found out that windows update was slowing it. I disabled the Windows Update Service, and when I rebooted it, the disk usage is at normal levels. So my question is, how can I update my laptop? and is there any way to use Windows Update without the laptop lagging? Hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

I am preparing for a hard disk crash.

I purchased a new PC with Windows 7 in June 2012. It came with a Samsung optical disk containing Windows 7. I am eligible for the $14.99 USD upgrade to Windows 8. Will there be an installation disk for Windows 8 available at this price and if not, then how much more will it cost?

If not, then how should I ensure that I can easily install Windows 8 after a hard disk crash? Do I have to keep my Samsung optical disk of Windows 7?

I'm not positive, but I'd guess a $14.99 price for Win 8 would be a download, unless Samsung is offering some special promotional price for a disc.

I've seen a price of $69.99 for Windows 8 Professional, which I think is for a disc.

I'd find out what that $14.99 price is good for. It may be for an ISO download, in which case you could burn the ISO to a disc.

I'd keep the Windows 7 disc regardless. If you are like most people, you probably will find 7 preferable to 8.

My laptop (Lenovo Y500 Laptop | Lenovo US) has a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive C: and it also has a 24GB chached SSD D:. The link only shows a 16, but mine was 24. Today, I left my computer idle while I was at class (I'm in college) and when I came back it was frozen on the start up screen Lenovo Logo. As customary with computer problems, I turned it off and turned it on again. It booted up fine, maybe the tiniest bit slow, but nothing really different from the norm. But, when I opened up Chrome, my entire computer froze up after about five seconds, and I had to force shut down. This happened about 10 times (not just with Chrome, but with explorer and Task Manager too). Weird thing is, I only got one BSOD, for MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. When it magically started up without immediately freezing after the first click, I scanned for viruses--nothing changed. I CCleaned the temp files and registry--still nothing. I checked for fragmentation--0% fragmented. Once I finally got Task Manager open, I started thoroughly checking all the tabs. Here's what I found:

I have a Dell Win7 x64 Home Premium disk that I have used several times to reinstall Win7 on different brands of computer (all had legitimate COA). However, I have no such 32 bit disk but I do have a Lenovo 32 bit operating system recovery disk but the one time I tried to use it for a fresh install on another brand it did not work as it said it was not a Lenovo laptop. What I want to do it attempt to make a universal Win7 install disk for both 32 & 64 bit. Does anyone know if I can use this Lenovo disk for this purpose. When I examine the folders on it they are named Boot-Mfg-Preboot-Recovery-SwWork-TvTos and Bootmgr. This is opposed to the folders on the Dell disk which are boot-efi-langpacks-sources-support-upgrade-autorun.inf-bootmgr-bootmgr.efi-setup.exe.
The files inside the folders look nothing like Dell's either. I have called everyone I know who has Win7 to see if I could borrow another but no one uses 32 bit plus as everyone knows computers don't get shipped with installation disks anymore.
I feel sure that all the necessary files are on this disk but have no idea how I would every decipher them. Does anyone have any idea? Thank you.

I have narrowed down my serious start up degradation on a Gateway ML3109 to spiking CPU and Disk activity as I start up and do almost anything on the notebook. Something is making various services, apps and drivers throw up errors about taking too long to start-up and shutdown. I thought I had narrowed it further to Sound drivers but updating and repeated reinstalls only reduced the sound-related errors. I'm almost sure this is hardware because I have done two clean reinstalls of just the Vista Basic system and it doesn't change. I thought it could be the generic drivers Vista's install disk uses, so I replaced every driver I could find on gateway's website for my model (only chipset wouldn't download, saying my system didn't "meet minimum requirements" even though it was downloaded from Gateway for my serial number) but the result is just fewer errors at each startup, or shutdown, in the Performance-Diagnostics>Operational log accessed on the Advanced Tools panel. These errors (sometimes Critical) are for different services/apps/drivers each time although Management Console, Prefetch, Error Reporting, Volume Shadow Service, Sound (including PCI slot, driver, and service) are frequent offenders. The startup and shutdown time are about 3 minutes each, up from 20 seconds previously. It is the critical error on each startup (degradation error 100) that bothers me.

Can someone tell me the exact procedure to troubleshoot these as I watch the performance graphs... Read more

So, it all started after i had my nvidia drivers error "Nvidia windows kernel mode driver error". After this error windows started being really annoying and laggy. Usually it lags most when i turn on computer, it takes a lot of time to load files, and strange thing happens after i turn it on. Just a few seconds after windows loads pictograms on dekstop windows strangly loads them again... I checked my disk usage, it goes to 100% sometimes and when its at 100% windows getting laggy. Usually reinstalling windows helps, but i cant reinstall it atm, i got a lot of important stuff in it (and ya stupid me, i made one disk). So maybe any of you know a solution for this problem? i'll appreciate any help.

Im using windows 8. Sorry for my any english grammar mistake.

A:Annoying lag spikes. Disk usages goes to 100% every 5mins.

If it is being caused by the Nvidia driver, then uninstall it, delete the drivers and use the Standard VGA driver. Then download the WHLQ Nvidia driver, not beta, and re-install.

Also, have you checked for virus? Could also be hardware problem.

Some time ago I've noticed that the hard drive on my laptop is constantly doing something in short bursts even when I'm not doing anything at my computer. The resource monitor showed a series of short duration spikes with the disk going from no to 80-100% activity every few seconds. When I'm running multiple programs these spikes are causing a bit of lag, nothing major but enough for me to notice.

Picture (this is while idling):

Defrag was performed.
I've ran the anti-virus - nothing found.
Ran chkdsk - no problems detected.
Ran memory diagnostic too - no problems with the memory.
The system isn't new.

so I am not sure what is causing this? and could these constant bursts of activity cause disk failure eventually?

A:disk constantly working, activity spikes

bump! still haven't found a solution to this

For as long as I can remember, my Alienware Windows 7 laptop has been having lag spikes. This doesn't happen on any other device in the house hold, so i've hypothesised that it's something wrong with my laptop. I've done several Disc scans, defrags, cleanups and virus scans, so i'm guessing / hoping it isn't a virus. I looked up some solutions to these lag spikes and some of them said I should observe my Resource Monitor.

I've been observing the Resource Monitor, and I've noticed that just after I turn on my laptop, my Disc speed, Network speed and everything else are all regular at a reasonable speed. After playing a game such as Minecraft, or really any other game my Disc Speed starts spiking to 0 then spiking back up again, gradually falling to 0 and not going over the 150kb/s mark. I'm not tech savvy, but i'm pretty sure that's an incredibly low speed.

I really need help with this issue and i'm willing to post any photos / logs to help, but I may need some help locating some stuff ^_^. I have had this issue for as long as I can remember on this laptop, and a fix to this problem would be great! Thanks!

Hello,

I am having issues with my system, or it might be my SSD, I am unsure hence here I am.

Symptoms:
The C:\ drive spikes to 100% activity but 0 avg respone, 0 read/write for 2-5 seconds (usually but it have taken over 40 seconds at a couple of occasions) followed by 5k+ ms respons and then back to normal operation. Most explorer relates things become unresponsive during these spikes like moving windows opening the start menu, scrolling a page in chrome. While other activities like a youtube video being unaffected as long as it has buffered. If another one of my drives are doing anything when a spike occurs they become inactive until the spike is over.

When:
The spikes happen mostly at random intervals, and seemingly after the system have been running for 4+, or so, hours they are gone. But if I open a program or a file explorer it can sometimes invoke but it is not something I can reproduce on command.

Different games seem to be affected differently Arma 3 does not like the spikes at all and seems to be a grand invoker of them. EVE ONLINE does not either like them. While Counter-Strike: Global Offensive does not appear to be affected by the spike at all, neither is Dota 2. [To clarify the spikes still happen but they do not interrupt these two Source engine games.]

They also appear to happen in safe mode so it should not be a 3rd party software issue I think.

I also can't seem to identify if it's a certain process that is causing it.

I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 14.04 & Windows 8.1 just Yesterday.
Now in Windows 8 There is a pecular problem. Whenever i interact with any object on the screen, the computer freezes, for about 30-40 secs. This happens almost all the time say 5-6 times in 10 minutes. The reason behind this was that DISK ACTIVE TIME which is shown by Task Manager spikes up to 100% & stays there for about a minute or so.

But in Ubuntu, none of these things happen I can use Ubuntu Lag free conforatably

The same thing used to happen with my previous Drive, so i got it replaced from WD, but even after replacing same issue still persists.

Pls someone help.

My System Config :
AMD Phenom X6 1055T 2.8GHz
Gigabyte 880GM-UD2h
Kingston 4GB DDR3 HyperX
WD Black 1TB

A:Disk Active time spikes upto 100% & stays there

You should check event viewer for any hard disk errors.

For you that are running windows 10 is it normal to get a high disk usage for the first 3 minuets of startup? After about 3 minuets everything goes back to normal and everything functions fine..... It has something to do with Windows Defenders Anti-Malware process causing this high disk usage on my windows 10 Laptop its brand new not much installed. Are any of you having similar problems with this?

A:New laptop nothing installed.. Spikes 100% disk useage at first startup.

My laptop has done the same since I got it, it shouldn't be a problem but if you want to resolve it an SSD may help.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

A:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.
