when i play farmville (facebk) i noticed that my laptop is slow. while my ram is 3gb already, dual core and im running vista business. do u think it has s/thing to do with vista??
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
My wife plays Farmville on my XP laptop that has just 1GB of RAM and an older Athlon64 CPU and it runs great.
Vista = resource hog.
Ever since I've bought this computer (beginning of 2009) my Compaq Presario CQ40 has been extremely slow. I don't really run much software on it, but it takes around 10-15 minutes to start up all processes.
I run Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall as security, but it previously had Trend Micro Internet Security in 2009.
I do Disk Cleanups, a full defrag through CMD and a chkdsk /r but it's still painfully slow.
The CPU fan is nearly always running all of the time, and after a quick Google this seems to be a problem in the Presario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! My computer is Compaq Presario CQ40. It's 8 years old and can only be used when directly plugged in to the electric socket. It's been working fine until last night when it suddenly shut off. At first I thought that maybe the plug was accidentally pulled out from the source but when I tried to plug it in again, the light indicator beside the power supply in the unit itself won't turn on. I tried to unplug and plug the charger adapter but nothing happened. May I know what could have possibly happened? Is there a way for me to check the possibile problem? I know that my laptop is very old, but I still find it very useful and I wish to continue to use it in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.Thank you!
If you are lucky the AC adapter has just died. To understand more, no light comes on the adapter brick when you plug it in the wall and no light comes on next to the AC jack when you plug into the laptop? Where do you live? On an 8 year old laptop you can find a useable "3rd party" charger for a few dollars.Read other 1 answers
Hi Everyone, please inform me the driver motherboard for Compaq Presario CQ40-530TU Notebook PC which is compatible with Windows 7 - 32 bit. In HP Website, I only found the driver for Windows Vista (32-64 bit). I really need your help all.
I think most, if not all, of the Vista drivers will work on Windows 7. Actually, when I upgraded a Vista laptop some years ago most of the drivers were included in Windows 7 so you may not need all. Seems like I only needed graphics and wireless driver. How does your Device Manager look?Read other 1 answers

I'm trying to repair/reformat a laptop. It's a Compaq laptop, Presario CQ40. It originally had Windows XP but started giving a blue screen. I can't get anything to work now. Windows won't boot, all it gives is a registry error (software/hive). When I try to boot from the Windows XP disc, it starts the XP boot load, but right before it gets to XP Recovery Repair screen, it gives another blue screen. It says "Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C1E524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). I don't know what to try. Several internet searches have suggested turning the SATA to Legacy in the BIOS, but I have nothing in the BIOS that relates to SATA. I'm stuck. Please help!
Blue screens can be caused y a couple of failing devices; HDD and RAM are most common. Substituting system components with good ones is a cheap way to solve problems like this. It's easiest to start with the system ram and you can easily eliminate the faulty component that way.
Pardon me if my problem sounds little funny.
I have Compaq Presario CQ40, windows 7 laptop.3GB RAM,320 GB Hard Disk.
Since past few days i m facing this problem, whenever i put on my laptop, and when the desktop opens, my laptop hangs in another 1 or 2 minutes. i have tried this around 5-6 times and still there isn't any improvement. i have also tried to set my computer to an earlier restore point, and have done this twice, still no improvement.
Shall i run recovery, i m afraid of data loss.
Can any 1 guide me what could be the cause, and what could be the solution.

Entered Compaq Presario CQ40-314TU Notebook PC in the search box3. Selected Software and Drivers from the left menu4. Clicked Go5. Selected Windows in the Operating system dropdown list6. In the Version dropdown list, I only had two options; Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows Vista (64-bit). Even selecting one of these options displays:No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. First check for all the Win XP drivers for your hardware.
You can check your HP/compaq PC here:

NOTE: Please read this thread fully.
If your Win XP CD, does not support your Sata Controller, you will need to load drivers to uses at F6.
Load Sata Controller drivers with a floppy disk is the best way.

I already have nLite and I'm ready to integrate SATA drivers with my WinXP installer but I don't know which drivers to include. Please, help me!

Hello, I can use your help here please? Working on this Compaq Laptop running Win7 64 bit, laptop started working way too slow, i tried in this order Mbam which showed infections the first time, which it cleaned and then next scan did not show anything but laptop was still way too slow so I then tried, SAS, adwcleaner, JRT, none of these showed anything then Ccleaner, now the laptop works a lot better and faster but still slow, I ram memtest which showed no errors and unit has 2gb ram installed.
I tried running OTL but when I double-click on the icon, it asks to 'Choose Windows directory' but no matter which drive I choose from the list C or E [The Recovery drive], I get a prompt from the Runtime Scanner showing: Target is not Windows 2000 or later

Haven't had to use your services since around 2012, thankfully, but seem to have picked up something I can't shake thru conventional (for me) methods.
Symptoms : the laptop runs normally for the first 5 mins from startup, then suddenly each access to File Manager, or any page on the internet through Chrome, takes 10-15 times as long as normal. The hard disc seems to be running (flickering light) almost all the time, whether a page is being requested or not. Task Manager shows the CPU at around 64%, pretty much steadily, while idle.
Hardware : Compaq Presario CQ 81 laptop, running Windows 7.
History : no previous infections since 2012, when I installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and rid everything that infected the same hardware being used now. The Anti-Malware has been resident since then, showing no infections, until last week.
I have not downloaded and run any new programs in the last 2 weeks.
The hard drive is only 50% full, with plenty of space, and does not need de-fragging.
This is a home computer that has never run a game, nor very large apps, in it's life.
It mostly surfs the internet on demand, and is rarely left connected to the internet for more than 4-6 hours at a stretch.
Clean-up attempts so far : I have run in Safe Mode - iExplore, JRT, Tdsskiller, AdwCleaner. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware found over 70 infection on the C: drive, and cleaned them all out. Subsequent runs in Safe Mode have found nothing. iExplore foun... Read more
Product Name and NumberHP Compaq Presario CQ40 (339TU) Operating System installed Windows 8 Pro (recently re-installed) Any changes made to your system before the issue occurredAccidentally deleted the system reserved partition (approx. 300MB) The IssueI have recently re-installed the OS on my notebook (the previous OS was the same). After installation I noticed that the native resolution has become 1200x800 (3:2) where it was originally 1280x800 (16:10) and also the display is detected as "Mobile PC Display". I need to completely reformat my compaq presario but have no idea how to format it since it is using vista. help help me do it step by step. thank you.
1. turn on computer and tap on F11 repeatedly until the Compaq screen disappears
2. click Advanced Options
3. select system recovery (may say restore the computer to factory settings)
and click recover without backing up files, click next
It will do the rest on its own.
Do this with ONLY mouse, keyboard, monitor and power attached. If you added any parts inside other than ram you will need to remove them to ensure it works properly.
A friend of mine brought me her Compaq Presario S5140WM Desktop PC for help installing a new graphics card. What I found was that her computer was soo infected with viruses and spyware that some of the files needed to install the new drivers was corrupted and the hardware driver install failed. I ran an online virus scan from Trend Micro (Housecalls) and used Spybot S&D and Ad-aware SE to clean up what I could. After all that, I ran another online scan using Panda Active Scan and the results of that scan showed that she still had spyware and a number of Trojans which Housecalls was not detecting. I recommend that she back up all critical files and run the HP recovery program which was located on it's own partition on her HDD. It seems that she must have encountered some sort of a problem with the recovery because Windows now reports that she has less than 100MB of HDD space available on an 80 gig HDD.
She really doesn't want to go through the process of running the recovery again. Is there a way of correcting this by other means? Before she ran the System Recovery, she had approximately 41 gigs free on the HDD. From what she is telling me, it sounds like Windows created a complete system backup that was not deleted once System Recovery was completed.
What do you think.
I would run the recovery again, and pay special attention for option to format the drive before installing windows.
HP (I believe) calls it a destructive install - as it wipes the partition removing all data from it.

What OS are you running & what was the previous OS?
Your system info says
Operating system installed
You mentioned that you installed XP SP2. You are in the Vista Support forum.
It seems like the BSOD is chasing me...
This time it's about my own laptop.
Its a Compaq cq40 and It's been acting very strange since a couple of weeks.
Suddenly a BSOD will come up and restar my computer.... but I can still use it...
I'd like to fix it before trying to format the entire disc....
I'm posting the dump files...
Thanks in advance!
It seems like you may have bad memory and reinstalling windows will not fix this issue.
What you should try to do is get a copy of MemTest.
Burn it to a CD and check your RAM. Let it test about 3 times, as if it passed 100% once it may not be an accurate result!
Post back if you need more help or if you are ready to continue.
I have had a hacker who put 5 high level malware items on my computer registry. I know this since I saw it posted on the computer screen. Since then the computer has been more restricted. A week ago the hacker decided to wipe the Vista settings.
Now, I just have a screen that has the logo COMPAQ repeated across the screen. There are pink vertical lines that are about an inch high. It says in the lower left hand corner, Vol. 5.11.
On the lower right hand corner, it says ESC =; F10=; F11=. I need to be in front of my computer at home. Now I am on a library computer.
The computer is stuck or frozen.
Do you have any suggestions as far as shortcuts. Before all these things happened, the computer was full of the hacker's crap. The Norton Symantec would or could not be downloaded and installed.
And it crashed today. I'm not sure why but I think it was because of Java
and the IE8 I just installed a couple of days ago. I went crazy it took me all day to fix it. It even changed from DSL to the wireless connection...what's really weird is I don't even know how to hook that up!
So anyone have the same problem don't want it to happen again it was a mess.
I think this would be better off in the Vista forum. I will move it there.
My internet explorer wont let me open it. Everytime I open internet explorer it just says it has stopped working is the message I keep getting. Please help

I bought this laptop which has AMD Turion processor and it comes with 512 mb RAM and Windows Vista OS. Wanted to upgrade the RAM and tried adding Kingston 1gb stick.
After installing the RAM and rebooting, i opened the windows explorer, I see that the window closing button (in red color) gets distorted. If i take the mouse over that button, the red color spills out of the boundary of that button. Generally some icons gets distorted.
If this is the problem with RAM what RAM can i use (Am planning to try using Transcend RAM also).
Or is it the problem with the operating system ?
Is it a good idea to continue using this RAM if the display issue is acceptable ?
It is kind of in the air. Could be the memory, you might want to check and make sure that it is the same speed ect. Or it could be vista. I personally wont buy vista for a couple more months, let them work the bugs out and make more compatible drivers for all my devices. That n it might get cheaper.
I finally got a reaction from this machine it will still not power down without unplugging and battery out. at first just black screen with options at bottom, once it allowed me to changed boot order but when I put cd in it won't boot either. No safe mode nothing. I did finally after months get this just now...

P.S. I pulled the hard drive and hooked it to my desktop with a USB powered or unpowred tri hdd diagnostic device and it read the drive but wont let me explore it but it does start to run through files almost like it was trying to install itself on my machine so I cancelled it.
So I think the hard drive "might" be good still or slightly damaged.
Also F2 (start up check) will give me a please wait message...foerever.
Can anyone help with that little bit of info?

Hello all.Just as the title said.
My Notebook is HP/Compaq CQ40-323AX. When I seed the windows7, I love it at once. And I have installed win7 to virtual pc. But I want to install win7 to my notebook but not virtuall pc. So some problems occured. It's the driver. Because the win7 was based on the vista, I think it may run well when useing the vista drivers (The drivers were downloaded at www.hp.com.cn)
Who can tell me I can do as I think? It's my thought right?
Or someone can give me a better way!
How is the performance under Vista Ultimate? If you are using Vista Ultimate there should be no problem upgrading or even 'Fresh' installing windows 7.
Yes, a lot of Vista drivers work with Windows 7 (just right-click the setup file and in properties select Compatability for Vista). This works about 90% of the time, if installing build 7068 you may not even need to update your drivers.
NOTE: You will need to backup you existing files (pictured/documents/music/videos etc) and make sure you've got an installation disk for Vista in case the upgrade/install fails.
P.S sorry for the late reply

Repairing a COMPAQ Presario running Vista Basic.
My problems are that the OS wont boot fully, it stops and then freezes.
Then on restart BIOS will run through and give me a choice to repair or boot normally in which I select repair which then runs through until it gets to
!! 0xc0190036 !! 3005/67034 (icardagt.exe)
Here it stops and blinks the text infinitely.
I would provide an HJT log but I can't even get in to do that.
Considering that I can get the BIOS to go through I'm assuming software but if anyone has any ideas that it may be hardware please share. The only hardware that I believe would be a problem at the moment would be the HDD, however it ran efficiently when I was extracting data from it.
Any help regarding this would be appreciated
Does it have Sp1?
This laptop has a shutdown issue. It wont launch msconfig unless it's in safe mode. It also has corrupted files showing from running sfc scan.
It has a MacAfee antivirus. I ran Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, AdwCleaner, and it found nothing but some cookies.
I think it has something worse going on. Will FRST run in safe mode?
You cannot post a FRST log in the Windows forums.
Please post the sfc log in your topic. Do not post it in code or in quotation, and do not use a host site with will download the log to my computer.
To find sfc /scannow log, type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
cmd will appear above the search box under Apps., right click on it and choose Run as administrator, this will open the Elevated Command Prompt. This will look simlare to the image above.
Copy and paste the following in the Search programs and files box, then press Enter.
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails. Click on this to open the log, copy it and paste it in your topic.

Well, my problem is a strange but persistent one. It appears my PC WILL boot and start but right after the microsoft loading bar, the monitor goes pitch black and stays off and I'm not sure if the PC is on but it lights up as if it were but won't do a thing.
Now, I've tried everything Vista has to cure this (Startup Repair could not diagnose ANY problems). What is the deal here?
Any help, especially quick and urgent would be appreciated as I NEED this laptop for work,
your monitor isnt supporting the refresh rate or screen size selected, you will need to start in safe mode and set it to 640X480 and then reboot back into normal mode.
If this doesnt cure it start it safe mode and use device manager to remove the video card, reboot and let Vista refind it, you may need to update the driver.
Here`s my question.
Is it possible to recover or view files that were not backed up at all before or during the factory recovery?
I`m not talking factory restore, Im talking factory recovery.
My D drive is the factory image partition.
I recently did a factory recovery which apparently completely wipes all memory that was not backed up and restores the computer to its original factory shipped condition.
The harddrive, before the recovery, had some personal information, bank info and whatnot, that was deleted, however, my computer is gonna be sold soon and knowing that people can recover deleted files even after having deleted them, I decided to use factory recovery as well to insure the safety of my info.
I am, now, just confirming that the files are indeed safe.Is there any way to recover them, even after the recovery?
Im running on a Compaq presario vista 32
There are many different standards when it comes to clearing and sanitizing hard drives. Some are satisfied with writing zeroes over each byte - 1 pass. Others want 35 passes with variable characters written.
Is it possible that someone could obtain your personal info from the hard drive? Yes. Is it probable... probably not. There is never a guarantee - especially with unknown future technological advancements.
If you want complete peace of mind on this subject - replace the hard drive. For near-complete peace of mind - wipe the entire HDD with KillDisk then re-install Vista.
