Fingerprint reader only works spasmodically.

Q: Fingerprint reader only works spasmodically.

At Startup, the fingerprint reader illuminates. Very occasionally, one pass opens the Windows screen. Usually, it takes more passes and after 2 or 3 I normally give up and use the passcode entry. I've made sure reader and my finger are clean but this makes little difference. Any advise would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Fingerprint reader only works spasmodically.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Lenovo Yoga 730-15. After setting up the fingerprint reader for sign-on in Windows 10, it will work for perhaps a day or two but then become intermittent and after maybe 3 days will stop working completely. After going into PC Settings and deleting and setting up a new fingerprint read, the same pattern: works for a day or two, then becomes intermittent, then stops. Cleaning the pad (with electronics wipes) and updating to the latest fingerprint reader driver have not resolved the problem. According to Lenovo System Update, all critical and recommended updates have been installed. Any suggestions?

I've searched for a solution in the manual but they only advise to clean it with a soft cloth which it doesn't work. Should i be contacting the warranty service?

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Model: HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx
Annoyance Level: Extreme

Okay, random weird problem that defies logic. I was busy doing stuff using Google Chrome (logged in on Facebook, trying to browse Newegg, etc.) and I tried logging in to my Newegg account using HP SimplePass, which uses the fingerprint reader technology to log you in to a bunch of different sites. However, this time around, Chrome crashed because HP SimplePass crashed.

I figured it would be best to reboot my system to clear out whatever was going on. However, upon rebooting, I get the "Device driver install yada yada" message that pops up, then it says driver installation failed. Going into device manager reveals that there is an unknown USB device attached (meaning, the fingerprint reader).

I've tried several times to install the driver for the fingerprint reader from HP (which originally had worked just fine). Now, it will not install. No amount of removing the driver and reinstalling it seems to be working, and I'm at my wits end. However, HP SimplePass installs just fine, but since it can't detect the fingerprint reader, it works by remembering typed passwords.

I'd rather NOT have to reinstall Windows if I can help it, but if anyone here has any suggestions that I could try to get this thing to work, that would be great. Thank you!

I have a T460s on a fresh install of Win10. I just bought an external USB fingerprint reader https://www.amazon.com/Fingerprint-PQI-Matching-Biometric-Security/dp/B06XG4MHFJ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&....My hope was that when my laptop was docked (on a ThinkPad Pro dock), I could plug it into a USB port on my external keyboard and login using it. For the time being, I'm just trying to get it working with the laptop undocked (i.e. forget about external keyboards, USB hubs etc.). Starting from scratch (i.e. fingerprints cleared in both Windows and the BIOS, and the external USB NOT plugged in), I setup the internal fingerprint reader, add prints, and am able login with no problem. When I plug in the external reader, drivers install just fine.  I enrolled a different finger, and was able to login just fine. However, when I unplug the external USB reader, I am never able to get the internal reader working again.  With the external unplugged and after a full restart, the internal will still not let me log in: the fingerprint option doesn?t even show up at the Windows login screen. The only way I can get the internal working again is by plugging the external in again (so that it appears in Device Manager), uninstalling both fingerprint devices (just uninstalling the external USB does not work), restarting the computer, and reenrolling my fingerprint using the internal. I know there is an option in the BIOS to just use the internal re... Good day,
Got my new and shiny E7470, but there is some trouble in paradise.
Is there a way to improve fingerprint reader? This thing is complete <profanity>. Half of the time it does not recognize the finger and when it recognized, it just takes too long. Updated all drivers and software to the latest, as per dell support suggestion. Still <profanity> :D My old Vostro 3350 FP reader works better in any case.
And the second question is, can the nfc read tags? Installed a couple of programs from windows store, but they do not show the tags info. When the sound is on and I place a tag on the reader, there is chime and that is all. Device manager shows, that device is active and working without problems.
NFC card should be Mifare Plus.

Received my E7470 few days ago same exact problem. Go to Dell Support website download and reinstall the Chipset Drivers 10.1.1.9 ,A01

A:Foxit Reader works fine -- uninstalling Adobe pdf reader

I've used Foxit reader, but it wasn't totally compatible with Adobe Acrobat created PDF files, but in most cases it sufficed quite well. As for Photoshop replacements, there are a few others available and PaintShop Pro is not a bad alternative, though when Corel bought it out initially, it completely stuffed things up. I understand that it's fixed a lot of update issues etc in that time and it's leagues cheaper than Photoshop.

A:Fingerprint Reader Why or Why Not?

Pros:

Can be useful with the right Win 7 compatible software - log in to forms/passwords.

Cons:

Your finger can be cut off to gain access, and even with a password, your system can be compromised, so options will need to adjusted in the software.

@Usman_Ahmad? You can use the Fingerprint Driver listed for your notebook at your Driver pages:Synaptics (Validity) Fingerprint Sensor Driver Driver:sp74167 Synaptics-Validity Driver V4.5.321.0A Commentary Windows 10 provides its own "fingerprint logon" software program set.  You do not need any other security software installed to use the Windows 10 logon.  Windows 10 (fingerprint) logon does not work with websites; Windows logon will get you into the computer by letting you use a fingerprint to log into your account. Windows 10 requires that you assign a PIN number in PC Settings > Sign-in Options to enable the fingerprint scanner.  Why?  Microsoft has added this additional security to allow access to the fingerprint scanner / software.  It is best if you write down / remember the PIN -- you will need it if the fingerprint software fails - and this does happen.  Nice thing about PIN -- it is tied to the hardware; no one can use it to remotely log into your computer.  NOTE:  You still need a Windows Password assigned to your account (ie., your local password or your Microsoft password used for password logins) -- PIN and password are not related.  PIN allows you access to fingerprint and perhaps other login methods (Hello, Picture). Additional Local Admin AccountAdditionally, it might be a good idea to add an additional local account that has administrative privileges.  If you... I have a dell usb fingerprint reader that worked on Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit and won't work on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. In vista I installed Dell Embassy Suit and it took care of everything for me. Of course vista didn't install its own driver to it. The minute I plugged in the fingerprint reader to Windows 7 it installed a driver. However this driver must not be any good because Windows 7 does not recognize it as a fingerprint reader when I try to enable its use to log onto Windows. Dell Embassy Suit can use the reader, but for some reason when I try to store fingerprints it will give me an error. Sometimes when I log onto Windows it will ask me to slide my fingerprint. When I do this it just asks for my user name and password directly after I swipe my finger. Its not super important, but I would like to get it working. Thanks for any help in advanced! -Kevin

With Facebook, you have to be a bit creative to add its login to DigitalPersona fingerprint system. You have to do this only once, afterwards you can then use your fingerprint to login.

First, leave email and password fields empty and click Login.
New window opens telling about incorrect login credentials.
On this page you can setup fingerprint login normally.

Pretty much that's it. I believe you can also preprogram website passwords into it so you can login with one swipe, but the only websites that don't automatically log you in are banking sites and sites that the reader won't recognize the login screen on anyways.

I had a computer last year for school that had a finger print scanner, and it got used very little.

fingerprint scanners are far more reliable that the webcam facial recognition that some laptops have, but it's easy to just type in your password.

Hi everyone and thanks for any help or advice in advance.

I have an HP elitebook 8440p laptop, windows 7 professional.

I took it apart and replaced the motherboard.

Put it back together and amazingly it seems to be working fine.

However it is not detecting the fingerprint reader, google seems to suggest that this is to do with BIOS settings.

So I tried to change them to enable the fingerprint reader on the next boot up.

But it wants a password which I dont have.

Google says I can bypass this with a code that I get when the Bios login fails and locks out, then enter that code as a checksum into a password regenerator.

But I don't get any code when the login fails and it locks up.

It seems possible that I could reset the bios including passsword by removing the CMOS battery and all power but thats not definite for all laptops, and as it took me ages to put it together, not particularly keen to take it all apart again.

Gave up at that point and decided to throw myself at your mercy ??

Thanks again,

Rumi

Hi everyone, I know that this has already been discussed at some point in the forum, but I just want to bring It up again, since I think that this would be such a useful  function to add to the x200 Tablet. I'm a student from Germany and I do all of my paperwork on my x200t.  So in in evidently I have to read through quiet a lot of PDFs.  Now, when I'm in normal mode I can use the keyboard, my mouse or the trackpoint for scrolling, but when I'm in slate mode it really bothers to have to use the pen for scrolling all the time.  The fingerprint Reader is at an perfect position to use it as a scrolling device in slate and normal mode, it would be so easy just to swipe your finger over it to scroll.  Now, we all know that this is possible, cause many other manufacturers (Sony, HP, Fujitsu) offer this option and they use the same fingerprint reader (Authentec Inc.).  I've tried installing their software, but it didn't do the trick, so I was hoping that some one responsible at Lenovo will read this and contact the department which is responsible for the Fingerprint Software and ask them to implement this feature into the Fingerprint software. This would make the x200t an even better notebook then it already is,  Best regards

This product is more for fun than actual security. You can use this for boot but you can still type in the password making it nothing more than a convience to log in. The only other thing that it does is remember login and password information. If I where to guess it creates a file of these passwords actually making your system a little less secure. However, saying you have a fingerprint scanner is cool in an odd sort of way.

I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate for a few years now with AuthenTec Protector Suite 2012 installed and a TrueMe fingerprint reading device.

The Protector Suite software allowed me to login to windows using a fingerprint and to use fingerprints to open password protected files as well as entering passwords into web screens. The software maintained a database, which allowed any entry of a password to be stored against a fingerprint.

Consequently, I've become used to simply swiping the fingerprint reader to enter all my passwords. Brilliant!

Along comes Windows 10 and I can't get Protector Suite 2012 to install. It gives the error "To use this product, Windows Biometric Framework must be enabled.". I can successfully setup Windows 10 Hello to use the fingerprint reader to login to Windows 10, but this is a small fraction of the potential of using fingerprints.

Anyone any idea on how to enable Windows Biometric Framework. By the way I've already tried using gpedit.msc to Enable "Allow the use of biometrics" but this doesn't appear to make the slightest bit of difference.

Alternatively, is there any Windows 10 compatible software out there that will do more than simply allow me to use my fingerprint reader to login. I would like to use it to enter passwords for protected files and web page inputs.

I performed a clean, fresh install of Windows 10 Pro alongside my existing Windows 7 Ultimate, so I can dual boot. Until I get ALL the functionality I ... Read more

You mean to log into Windows at the Welcome screen using your fingerprint?

If that's what you're asking if 3-4 repeated attempts fail, the fingerprint function will get temporarily inhibited and you will now need to click on the other Welcome screen icon to manually enter your Windows password via keyboard.  Each reboot this starts over, so after clicking on the fingerprint icon on the Welcome screen you'd once again get another 3-4 fingerprint login attempts.  Etc., etc.
