I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm having no luck making a Windows 7 folder write accessible to XP. I've turned off password protected sharing and given both "Everyone" and "Guest" read/write permission. I can access the folder, but whenever I try to transfer a file to it, I get:

"Error Copying File or Folder - Cannot copy ____: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

Any suggestions?

I am able to read but not able to write on shared folder from Windows 7, however i was able to do the same from Windows XP compture.

I have following setup:

1) Shared Folder is on Windows 2003 server on same workgroup and network. Private network
2) Accessing Shared Folder resides in Windows 2003 server from Windows 7 Premium. Can read folder but cannot write anything to the folder

I made sure that folder has access to "Everyone" - read and write on shared folder on windows 2003 server. Drive is not full.

I am getting message on Windows 7 compture that "You need permission to perform this action"

I am pulling my hair off with this issue. Seems like it is small issue but not able to resolve.

I'm pretty stumped on this one and greatly appreciate any advice given. I am working on a network with 3 Win 7 Pro machines and one XP machine. This network needs to run a third party program that's installation requires to copy of a certain folder from
a "server" to the client machine, then run a batch file within to complete the setup.

When transferring this folder over to the client machine it transfer all but a handful of files that say that you must have permission from the computer administrator in order to complete this action. It doesn't specify, but I assume that it means the "server".
If completing the setup process without the files, it seems to complete successfully but the programs do not function acceptably (missing data).

The Windows XP machine accepted the transfer, completed successfully, and is properly communicating with the WIN 7 "server". I am only receiving this issue from the other 2 WIN 7 Pro Machines.
All accounts are local administrators, joined on a homegroup with Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, and Public Folder Sharing turned on, Password Protected Sharing turned off, and am allowing Windows to manage homegroup connections. The folder

I have tried playing around with different combinations of these permission... Read more

A:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

I am applying a solution to take backup from clients machine to a shared folder location, the share management will be done through their AD accounts through a backup application.

However, I want to prevent user from accessing the shared folder location and deleting contents
it would be possible to use another account for shared file access but am looking for better option.

if Anything from the following can be done it should be great:
- Modifying permissions to allow writing and modifying content but not deleting
- Disable web access to shared location through windows explorer
- Only allowing access to shared location through the backup application in any way
Really appreciate any help.

A:Shared folder, write but not delete

not done any Active Directory work for a while but I'm sure the delete permission was separate so a deny could be applied the the delete for the group concerned who would have the other permissions, you would need to check the stacking of the actual permissions to be sure though, a deny is a dangerous thing for sysdmins as you often forget what groups you've assigned yourself as for testing

Also it's worth having a look at Sysinternals as I think they still have some advanced AD tools

As most of the others should be possible through normal NTFS permissions and even the parental controls it should be possible using Group Policy

- I have three PCs - two running Win 7 Home Premium ("clients") and one running Win 7 Ultimate ("server").

- I wish to use one of the server PC's HDD to store a backup of critical files of the two client PCs using folder sharing.

- All three are on the same homegroup (took me ages to achieve this - only managed once syncronied all three clocks, but that's another story...).

- I set up a uid and password for the server PC, will refer to it as "john".

- I created a folder on the server HDD called "backup" under which the backup will be stored. The folder and all its sub-folders are shared.

- I can see and access this folder and its sub-folders from both client PCs.

- I verified that "john" is the owner of the backup folder and all the files/sub-folders it holds. I also verified that "john" has read/write/full control rights for the backup folder and all its sub-folders.

However, as commonly reported , I am unable to change the "read only" permission from the "backup" folder. Hence (I am guessing that this is the reason) I cannot write anything to it ar its sub-folders from the client PCs. I can un-tick the read-only box, click OK, but when returning it is still there...

I already tried "attrib -s -r e:\backup" where e is the HDD leter on the server PC, but it has no effect.

Any idea how to get around this?

I have all 4 PC's in the office using Windows 7 Pro. I have one computer that is designated to house my share folder for scanning documents and attaching them to our management system.  We are finding that multiple problems occur - not at once and at
different times .  Sometimes, the document within the shared folder called "IMAGEBATCH" will not delete.  Sometimes that document deletes, and then re-appears within the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes the document will not
scan through the network to the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes we get an error saying we "don't have permission to delete this file".  These circumstances occur on all computers, including the computer that houses the original file IMAGEBATCH.
Sometimes in the day, each computer that is supposedly looking at the same IMAGEBATCH folder see different files.
Restarting the computer clears the problems, but then start right back up at irregular intervals, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day.
I did find a duplicate file named IMAGEBATCH on the "C" drive of that PC, so I deleted that, but the symptoms are still there.  This is the only shared folder in our entire network.  What can I be missing?  I have checked to make
sure it is a share folder, all the permissions are in place, and that we all can see the folder through the network.  What am I missing?  I am the owner and administrato... Read more

Guys, a real basic question. I am looking at buying a new machine and have a choice of DVDRW/CDRW or DVDRW. The CD write and read speed (16 and 24) appears alot quicker than the DVD write and read speed (4 and 8). Is this a true comparison i.e. the CD reads 4 times quicker than the DVD or am I missing something. Will be using the laptop for a lot of CD reading for itunes and this is an important factor in my decision. All guidance appreciated. Cheers.

I am trying to access files in a shared folder on my Vista PC from my XP laptop, through my wireless home network, but when I go to open a file (e.g., Word Document) it opens as "Read-Only". I noticed the shared folder on the Vista PC has the "read-only" attribute selected on its properties. I've tried unselecting the attribute, but it reverts to "read-only" every time I do this. The folder I'm sharing is the "Documents" folder on the Vista PC. All of the files I want to access from the XP laptop are in this folder and I don't want to bother with moving them to the "Public" folder in Vista.

Is it even possible to do what I'm trying to do? That is, access files on the Vista PC from the XP laptop through a wireless home network, and be able to make changes to the documents so they save on the Vista PC?

I have followed several step-by-step guides on file, folder, and printer sharing in Vista, and have changed all the permissions to make sure I'm able to access the shared folder from the XP laptop. I've changed the firewall settings on Norton 360, but that hasn't helped either. I've also installed the LLTD responder hotfix on the XP.

Both computers belong to the same workgroup and the network is set to "Private".

Note: I'm not getting any error messages when accessing the shared folder. The shared printing is working fine without any problems.

Hi i'm no expert on this topic by any means, and i hope someone else can come along with a better explanation than i can, but it seems to me that your system (network) is treating the xp laptop as a 'slave' which can access but not alter data on the main pc, i would check to see if there are any settings that might apply to this, or maybe (just a guess) you may have to sign on as administrator on your xp laptop. like i say it's really not my field but hey, you can give it a go for what it's worth. sorry i can't be of much more help to you.

I have a Gateway Computer running Windows 98. MY problem concerns a Philips 3610 Read/Write - Write CD. It has always been a problem i.e. - balky. I am using Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.5 software. I can burn a CD but it is only readable on the Philips. I can't get it to initialize on the other CD drive on the computer or on the drive in my wife's Compaq laptop. I had to transfer a 5MEG file to her computer and finally had to install an old Zip Drive to do it. Sometimes (sometimes not) I get an error message after the CD is burned, but it reads OK in the parent drive.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Also, went to Philips website to try to find new drivers - It's lousy!

A:Philips 3610 Read/Write - Write CD

I trust you have the updates from Adaptec/Roxio.

Try the Sony CD Extreme software: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dlag...m/dsonyweb/cdrw/SonyCDExtreme1.3.390Setup.exe It should work fine with your burner. If you just select “data” in the opening wizard it will record session at once, close the session so it can be read and leave the disc open so you can add more stuff. Very robust software – make sure you don’t use a formatted CD. If that still doesn’t work I suggest trying some different blank media.

If you are recording to a formatted CD then you are packet writing and it can’t be read on any other computer until you install the reader for it from http://www.roxio.com

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."
But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.
What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

A:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,
This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.
Just double check, this must be a shared folder.
Hope this helps!

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

A:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

Hello. I've recently set up a HomeGroup for my computers to easily share my media files over many computers, especially between my desktop computer and my Sony Vaio (since it's missing a DVD-player and I often bring it with me when traveling to watch movies.

However, when I send files through the HomeGroup (copy them from the shared libraries off my other computer and puts them in the local libraries instead, to be able to use them when the computers are not connected) I found that all the files ends up Read-only, which is not a problem in itself, but since I prefer to add subtitles (in VLC) it seems like it is a problem.

I noticed that all the videos uses the same subtitle, even though I've not chosen it for that particular video, and when I try to change it adds the new subtitle in the list and "activates" it, but nothing changes. It's still the same one in the video. I know this may be something bad with VLC, but since it works fine when the files are not read-only I'd prefer to fix that instead of using another program.

Also, I've tried just unchecking the boxes in properties, but every time I close the properties window, it gets re-checked. I've now got the same problem on my desktop computer with the files I've previously shared, even though I've removed them from the library list.

Help would be much appreciated, since this read-only thing has infested my whole movie collection on both of my computers, and I really don't want to rip all those movies back ... Read more

Hey everyone.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.33-AMD64) and Windows 7 professional, and sometimes I get a little boggled at the apparent lack of functionality in W7 in the following situation.

I have a network share in the root of my drive that I've called "DropBox" where my boss and I can both put files to be shared via the network. I have a bunch of files in "Downloads" directory that I'd like to be able to share at various times, but would rather not have my downloads directory directly shared as it violates my sense of order. IE, I would much rather have one shared folder from which you can reach all the other content I need to share on the drive, and if I need to un-share something, simply delete the shortcut, and Voila! instant anti-sharing.

Figure 1. Clean Sharing

In Ubuntu, you can create a symlink within a shared folder that points to a non shared folder which allows network users to access that non-shared folder.

Does this functionality exist in W7?

A:Shared Shortcut to non-shared folder.

Okay, so I solved this issue on my own =) TGFG! The answer lies in the MKLink command.

Specifically: mklink /D /J Downloads "C:\Users\Robert\Downloads\"

Works like a charm. All networked machines have access to my non-shared directory through the shared folder, and it looks nice and clean on the viewers end.

Thanks for letting me rubber duck this one.

Hello MilesAhead,I'm not absolutely sure, but some of the phrases in your problem description seem to indicate that this might be a variation of the "XP + mouse movement + mouse buttons + keyboard keystrokes" behavior described in the following post. You'll have to do an iponfig or ipconfig/all to obtain the IP Address of the other computer that you're trying to access.

Can you go to device manager (Computer>System Properties>device Manager (top left)

Then go to your dvd drive>right Click>properties
Does it say it is working ok?

It more than likely is a hardware fault.

I had 2 x 256mb ram cards plus 2 x 64mb cards installed and under "My Computer" properties it only said I had 496Mb of ram. I replace the 64mb cards with 2 new 256bm cards in slots 1 and 2 and moved the ollder 256mb cards to slots 3 and 4. The properties still only show that I have 496 mb of ram. Is this a hardware problem or a software problem and what do I do next. When starting the computere up, I get a message that says there is a read/write error at a certain location but then it continues to boot up. It is running slower now but still running. Dell dimention 8100 running XP. Thanks

First, my apologies if this has been addressed before. Was not able to find it using search.

I have an HP Pavilion, a410n desktop which I use as a second computer. It has a DVD-Rom and a CD-RW drive. I also have an external LG Super Multi DVD Rewriter attached via USB.

All 3 drives can read recorded disks and appear to function okay. However neither the internal CD-RW nor the external DVD drives will write CD's or DVD's. Neither appear to recognize blank disks.

When I use XYExplorer to see the files is has a red circle (like the no smoking circle) on the drive letters. When I left click the drive letters I get a message "Currently not available" with the drive letter.

Device status says both are working properly.
Devive Manager says all are working properly.

have you tried connecting the drives to another computer to see if they are fully functioning? if not thats would be the best place to start

Hey guys

Recently, I purchased a new computer as my old computer had a problem which didn't resolve even after changing most hardware (hard drives, disk drives, cables) so I decided to purchase a new one.

Anyhow, on my old computer I burnt a game onto a disk and now when I placed the disk into my new computer it ended up screwing it up just like the previous computer. Anyhow, I opened it up and found an unplugged hard-drive floating on the bottom of the case which I decided to plug in and now I successfully have Windows XP installed. Anyhow, I'm running a scan to hopefully repair any problems on my main hard-drive after formatting it fully to remove any stored files left by the last "quick" format.

Basically, before the results come in from the scan I was wondering if there could be a problem on the disk which could've caused this problem? It took me a while to reinstall Windows as I ended up getting the same problem in different words of course and before that everything I tried (programs, games) also give me the error about a corrupt file during the transfer and so on.

I have a Micro Advantage 52x-42x-52x CD-RW drive. In device manager its name is CDWRITER IDE5224. Its the kind you get at OfficeMax for 10$ after rebate...

Before when I had Windows ME, the drive worked fine. The hard drive failed so I replaced it and installed XP. At first worked fine still, because I had to install a lot of stuff from CD's. I do not remember exactly when, but the drive stopped being able to read CD's

When I put in a CD, the drive spins up, the mouse cursor changes to working in background, and the name of the drive under My Computer changes from "CD-RW Drive" to "CD Drive". However, it does not show the title of the CD, and it shows its used/total size as 0 bytes/0 bytes. If I click on it it says "Please insert CD in to drive D:" I have tried many CD's of different types (the silver original ones, CD-R's, CD-RW's), and its all the same problem

The interesting thing is that I am able to burn CD's with Nero just fine. After the CD is ejected and I put it in again, it still cannot be read.

Device manager says its working properly. I did not update any drivers.

How could this be??

Thanks a lot,

Hello all computer geeks out there who can solve this problem,

I've got a Sony 52X CD-RW drive. It used to work fine until recently, and I could read and burn CDs very well. But recently, I've noticed that I can read CDs but when I try to burn one, I get an error message that there is no writable disc in the drive. I've tried changing the CD and the manufacturer but it hasn't worked. In its drive properties I've checked that the driver is properly installed.
Sometimes I can burn CDs, but that is only if I use my Nero (version 6.
something), not the built-in Roxio one.
One thing. I used Nero InfoTool to collect information. It told me that 'System ASPI is not installed' and 'Nero ASPI is installed and working properly'.
Happy figuring!

A:To read but not to write, that is the question.

try using cdburnerpro and see if you are getting the same problem.

I have Roxio Direct CD 5 and Easy CD Creator on my machine...TEAC CD-W554E CD Rom...

Having been given a rather large box of CD-RW 700MB discs it would be nice to be able to use them--ONLY-- they are not recognized by the software I have...I usually use 1 x 4 compatible...these discs are 8 x 12 high speed...

If I keep these discs, would I be able to use them when I get around to buying Nero...'been getting around to it for months now'...just hate spending money until I have to....only I understand Nero is a far superior software, so I will eventually shell out for it...

Can Nero use these discs or does it depend on the drive I have...

Cheers guys...

I'm trying to use CD-RW as a 'big' floppy drive to backup data.
I wrote a little script with some DOS commands like COPY.

But the problem is with CD-RW.Whatever I tried to do (format, erase etc.) and then copy files using Explorer or similar programs, I got an error message - can't write on a device.
What is wrong? Any ideas will really help me.
