Error Message Windows Detected Hard Drive Data Corruption

Q: Error Message Windows Detected Hard Drive Data Corruption

Hi my neighbour has just shown me her tablet which is showing the following error which appeared after she accessed Facebook.
***** Don't restart your computer *****
WIndows Detected Hard Drive Data Corruption.
This indicates that some recent downloads on the computer has created problems on the computer.
Call technical support (0800) 802 1389 and share this code S4AW2 with the Agent to fix the issue.
I was surprised when she said she had rung the number and they were unable to help.  I presumed it was ransomware and they would want money.
Can anyone help please?  Is this genuine?  What are the next steps?

Preferred Solution: Error Message Windows Detected Hard Drive Data Corruption

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi jen000 This is what we call a technical support scam. Basically a fake alert pops-up in the web browser, stating that your system/computer is having an issue and it asks you to call a certain number. However the person that will answer and "assist" you is a scammer that will try to sell you an overpriced solution that is basically useless since you aren't affected by the problem in the pop-up. Hello, I am receiving this message when turning on my laptop:

It just started appearing today.
I am using a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E550 i7-5500U 15.6-inch 16GB 500GB SSD AMD Radeon R7 M260 Full HD Windows 7 Pro Business Laptop Computer.
I bought it new 6 months ago but just started using it 2 months ago.  It was very expensive so this error message I'm receiving is troubling.
I google'd and read people saying this is not an actual error message from Windows but its a virus.  I ran both Malwarebytes and ESET 9 virus scan and both programs did not find anything.  I also tried running Malwarebytes in safe mode with networking.  I've also right clicked both C: and Q: hard drives, clicked Properties>Tools and checked for errors on both.  It did not find any errors.
I have backed up all my files onto an external hard drive.
So I really need help.  I don't know if the hard drive actually has a problem and needs replaced or if a virus/malware is causing this popup.  Somebody please help me, thank you.
EDIT: I also just downloaded hdtune because I read about it on another site when I google'd this problem.
When I click the "Health" tab within the problem this is what shows:

And when I click the red part listed, this is what shows:

I don't know if that helps or not.  I will now not attempt anything else until I receive some help here, thank ... Read more

My 8GB Transcend flash drive became corrupted when I tried opening it on a Windows 7 laptop. It was previously used on a Windows XP laptop.

A new driver was found for the device when it was inserted in the Windows 7 laptop. After this all the file names turned into dingbat or strange symbols and could'nt be opened. The changed names remained when I put the drive back in the other laptop.

I checked the Windows XP laptop and flash drive for viruses and registry errors. I found and corrected 86 errors, but the flash drive is no longer recognised on the Windows XP laptop.

How can I recover my files on the flash drive?

A:How can I recover flash drive data, after corruption in Windows 7

Download Recuva and do a deep scan. In the meantime do not place any files on the flash drive, as it will overwrite previous information contained within it.

It should find some data for you.

I've tried system restore and got this message:

So I clicked on it, and then it says ''Windows can't check disk while in use, do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?''. So I agree to it by clicking ''Schedule disk check''. So then I restart my computer & and it does nothing at all. I wanted to try system retore because theres this pop-up that keeps accuring on my Internet screen (Google Crome,Internet Explore) that says ''Please Install Flash Player Pro To Continue'', and saying that It's outdated. But when I did try to install it, It wouldn't let me. Comes to find out, I THINK (Idk) it's like some type of virus. But I was just wondering on why my computer wont allow me to restore now? I just began getting this error yesterday. What is the likelihood that another issue besides a failing hard drive is causing error? Secondly, I've already purchased a new hard drive as a precaution. What is the fastest/easiest way to backup/clone this drive?

A:"Windows detected a hard disk problem" error message

Please open an elevated command prompt.
When you have the command promt open please enter the following command:
sfc /scannow and press enter.
After the scan is 100% and the scan did repair files please restart your computer.

Please re-open an elevated command prompt and enter the following command:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

The cbs.log file will be posted on the Desktop as the current user, named sfcdetails.txt. Please attach this file in your next post.

Note: You can also copy/paste the commands to make it easier.

I'm trying to reinstall windows. When the cd is booted and windows starts I get an error that it cant find my hard drive. I'm using a SATA hard drive, and I'm assuming its a problem with my BIOS settings but I'm not sure what to change. I know my hard drive is working because the current version of windows I have on it loads fine and I can access my files. I've also ran chkdsk /f to fix any problems. A:Can't reinstall windows - error message: can't find hard drive. Please Help.

You probably need a sata driver for Xp cd to see the hard drive. When you first start setup you will see "press F6 to insert driver"...driver should be on floppy disk and probably came with motherboard or is downloadable from motherboard mfgr site.

A couple of days ago I decided to take my computer tower to school. After I got there (carried it on the bus :P) and set it up (didn't connect to network) it wouldn't boot (said it "could not load OS"). I tried starting in save mode but it would hang while trying to load the system files (specifically on the file 'agp440.sys').

When I got back home I tried the Microsoft bug fix suggestion for the 'agp440.sys' (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324764) problem but it didn't help (safe mode just hung up on a different .sys file). I was suspecting some OS files got currupted.

Then I tried booting from the WinXP SP2 CD, pressed 'R' and then tried to run chkdsk /p and /r which took A WHILE (at first it was fast, but after getting to about 70% it went back to 50% and then took about 1.5hrs to finish).

I then reinstalled Windows XP SP2. It kinda worked...Windows started up fine, but it was VERY VERY SLOWWW (the first time it started it took about 20sec for the start menu to open after it was clicked). I restarted, it was better but it was still SLOW (the cursor would jump, took a while to open any program, etc). I quickly started backing up my data to my other HD, which also was SLOWW (transferring a 700MB file to my other HD took about 35min!). Burning CD's and DVD's was also 10 times slower (took 2hrs to burn a DVD which usually takes 15min).

I tried running hardware diagnostics tools such as PowerMax (both my HD's are Maxtor), Tuff-Lite (full h... Read more

I was laying in bed and heard my computer restart for seemingly no reason. I get up to look at the screen and I get the error "3rd Slave Hard Disk Error" I try to continue but since Ubuntu is installed on the now faulty hard drive, it says error: no such device: - device name - Entering rescue mode - grub rescue>... which I've seen before, it's telling me that it can't find the Ubuntu installation. I have windows as my primary OS on the first hard drive (the one that's still detected) and manually choose windows before the computer starts. I went into BIOS to try and change the boot sequence, which has caused the grub rescue screen before, but the 2nd hard drive is no longer detected. How can I get passed the grub rescue screen? What could of possibly happened to my hard drive in such a seemingly random way? I have a 3rd unused hard drive, am I better off just installing windows on it and starting over? I don't want to lose everything on my 2nd hard drive though.

I tried starting it with the cords plugged into the primary hard drive into the 2nd faulty one, it's spinning but still not detecting it

hey all,

i recently started seeing the attached error message- i'm guessing that this is a hardware failure and not a Windows/software issue that can be corrected somehow?

Welcome to EightForums.

I would backup & replace the HDD.

But you can check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

My coputer froze yesterday, and now whenever I try to turn on my computer it says my hard drive isn't detected. We installed the hard drive in another computer, and it worked. What could be the problem? I  have a Hp media center PC M7248N

A:Hard drive not detected error

Exenji, first reset the  COMOS. Check your motherboard specs for how to do this or remove the  small round silver battery from the motherboard; wait 30 seconds and reinstall it. (It ids a good idea to replace with a new battery.) This will reset the COMOS. Then reboot to see if HDD is detected. If not, go into the BIOS setup (repeatedly hit F10 at HP logo screen) and check to see if your hard drive is listed. You may have to set it to on. If it is listed in BIOS, but not detected another drive (a bad one) could prevent it from being detected. If you have any removable or external drives attached to your computer, disconnect them. Reboot your computer to see if your HDD is detected. If not, open your case and disconnect the data cable from all drives except your primary hard drive. This includes the floppy, optical, zip, backup, or secondary hard drive(s). If your HDD is  detected, reconnect each drives data cable one at a time rebooting between each. If after reconnecting a drive and rebooting, your HDD is not detected the last drive is a bad drive and preventing your HDD detection. I have found that sometimes a bad drive that is connected will let the HDD be detected then on later boots the HDD will not be detected. Also it is possible that your BIOS is corrupted. Let's hope not. Another possibility is a bad motherboard. I hope this helps you.

Hey there guys, about six months ago I started receiving an error every few days on my computer on boot, and it was something along the lines of: 'pxe-rom: Check cable connection!'. To fix it I just used my Windows 7 install CD and it was fine, until whenever it'd happen again. Now, just about three days ago an error popped up that said 'Windows has detected a hard disk problem'. The hard drive is a 640 GB Toshiba MK6465GSXN. Anyway, after getting that message I quickly backed up all of my important documents and stuff onto an external HDD. It was also very slow, slower than my computer had ever been. So, I decided to do a clean install since scans with Malwarebytes and AVG detected nothing. And then, once it finished, it popped up the error message again?! I have noticed that the slowness has gone, but I'm not installing any programs in case it does fail. I am wondering that maybe the 'check cable connection' error was telling me something, but I didn't think anything of it. So, does it sound like I need to get a new hard drive?
EDIT: I bought a new hard drive, fixed!

A:Windows has detected a hard disk problem. Hard drive failing?

In many cases, that is Windows way of saying your hard drive is in imminent danger of failing. Of course there could be other problems, but windows will usually detect it first. A tutorial that may help is simple to use, but may take a while. Disk Check I would also get the Manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic program to check the drive. You were wise to back up all of your personal information.

I have a persistent problem on my old computer, which has prompted me to buy another computer, but I still want to fix my old computer.

My computer will occasionally fail to boot up properly. The symptoms that I see when this happens are as follows:
-Text on bootup has some random letter replacements (ex. "I hate my computer", would show up as "I hgte mh cvhmuter").
-The Windows boot screen image is corrupted with what appears to be static.
-Windows will not boot up successfully under these conditions, and the computer will hang.

What I have done to resolve this:
-Put the old graphics card back in with no change (this started maybe a week after I installed a new graphics card)
-New Motherboard (actually, the old one blew up shortly after this problem started happening - smoke and everything, so I was just hoping this would kill two birds with one stone)
-Fresh install of Windows on a new hard drive (This had to do with cleaning up drivers related to the old motherboard, without erasing the old hard drive, and I had a spare hard drive kicking around)
-Removing and swapping RAM (I noticed it would happen less often if I had less RAM, but I was not able to isolate any bad RAM chips, and they all passed a memory check)

What is still the same in the computer since this started happening:
-RAM sticks
-Power Supply and Case

(I cannibalized everything else for my new computer, and threw all my old CD-drives and peripherals back into this computer to try a... Read more

Alduins have you used any registry cleaners lately? if so you may have a problem with something that has been cleaned by some lousy software which most claim to enhance the machine.

What I might suggest is to try and put the data onto another separate drive and see if the problem still exists. If it doesn't then maybe the second drive is going south.
It may be then have to be a hard drive test to see if one of the drives is bad

That is not a most welcome message.

I would immediately backup the most important personal data and run the DOS version of Manufacturer's Diagnostic Utility. If it passes without any event reported, fine. But if it finds bad sectors and even if it repairs it, be wary. Not to be taken aback by any catastrophic failure that may occur unannounced, always backup all your personal data and also image your system regularly.

I just keep getting the error message- PXE-E00 There is no memory between 480k and 640k. I have updated the bios but still no go. Is the old hard drive toast? I can't figure out what happened. I'll never use acronis again that's for sure. The computer is a dell, optiplex gx1 with 400 ghz processor with 640 mb ram. The hard drive was a 12 gig and I was trying to replace it with a bigger 80 gig drive. cd rom and floppy.
I hope I have given you all the info you need.
Thanks for any help. This is the first time I tried cloning a drive so don't know what went wrong. Hope someone can help.
Thanks in advance!

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

A:Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141

"...when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" (Sherlock Holmes)

Seems to be the case. But don't worry too much, hard disks are inexpensive and easily replaced.

Hi I've had my 250GB Iomega Hard drive for quite a while now but recently I've been having some problems with it. When i try to download something onto it it sometimes stops and gives me an data cyclic redunancy error message. I've looked this up and poster here before but still don't really understand what this is. Anyway, when I inserted my hard drive today it was very unresponsive but when I eventually got into it I couldn't see any of the files so I assumed it had deleted them but when I checked the HD properties it says they are still there. Any way I can get the files off the folder before I pack it in for good?

Thanks in adance

Hi and welcome,

The I/O device error implies a problem with the USB device.

Run a chkdsk /R on the USB device, and then also run this program to check the health status of the drive:

CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World

Hi, I just received my new Hard Drive after my old one had to be send away because it stopped worked due to cyclic redundancy check errors. After reading several different articles and threads about this I'm still not really sure what CRC is (don't really care) but was wondering if there was any way to be sure it doesn't happen again to this new hard drive.Should I format the HD before use or do a check disc or something?

Can anyone confirm what the following error message means OU6KMD-6R28JG-MFPX0J-60W303

A:Hard drive Short DST error message

Hi Zalan,This error means that your hard drive has failed or is failing. You will need to change your hard drive as soon as possible and try to backup all your personal data. You can do this by removing hard drive and attaching to another computer with usb hub and see if you can recover any data. You will need a new 2.5" drive for your laptop, you can choose brand and capacity you want. Probably cheaper in online stores. You could also opt or an SSD which will improve system performance. You will have to reinstall windows 10. You can download the media creation tool from Microsoft, run it and create a bootable usb drive with win 10 on it. It will be activated automatically when installed (if asked for product key just click on do not have one) as long as you install the same edition which was already on the PC. Let me know if you need any further help,David

hello all.

i recently had some issues with my HD. apparently, it just crapped out, i have my new one now, a Seagate 160Gb Sata interface. my comp is a Gateway M680. i installed the HD, ran the setup disk, and after restarting i got this:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

windows support says its due to incompatible or damaged hardware. this is a brand new HD and i cant see how it would be incompatible. i could really use assistance, im getting tired of using my sisters tiny laptop. any help is greatly appreciated

A:error message after changing hard drive

try re-installing the drivers by doing a repair install using your Windows CD

Boot from CD
select install at the first window
Hit F8 when asked to agree to EULA
Select R when the next window arrives with your installed partition highlighted

If it's not SP 1 or SP 2, have your SATA drivers ready .. like you did the time you re-installed windows

also have your Reg Key ready.

XP will re-install ONLY the drivers to your PC .. just be patient and wait for the install to complete

I dropped my portable hard-drive, I think I've damaged the USB connection. When I plug it into my laptop I can see all the files. The USB indicator light on the portable drive normally flashes when in use but it now only flashes for a short while and then stays on permanently. I was able to move one file on to the desktop when testing to see if I could get the files off the drive. When I tried a second file it got an I/O error message " the task could not be completed due to an I/O error"

It's a WD passport portable 250GB hard drive and it's nearly full - I've no idea how to open it or how to slave the drive (if that's what is required) can anyone help please?

A:I/O error message External Hard Drive

Hey there,

Will show you how to open the casing.

It could either be the drive failing...or a problem on the controller inside the casing..

You would, as you suggested get a better idea once you slave the drive

Early this morning when surfing the web both Google chrome and internet explorer , crashed at the same time, then user control tried to get me to make changes to my hard disk which i repeatedly said no to-this was persistent for quite some time realised, i needed to try get task manager open to block it but it wouldn't open, then another warning message, came across as a authentic windows warning but opened quite a few, then McAfee said it blocked a potentially dangerous internet link to a program found in c:\programdata , looked into the file and seen to files which looked odd, both .exe and the 1st one looked like the warning i had seen early which was i thought wasnt authentic, the other one i can't remember what it was but i deleted them both. (unsure what happened at the stage now was panicking) so i switched off the computer and opened it in safe mode where i could no longer see any of my files, and mcafee wouldnt work (by that i mean would it was saying i was at risk and when i turned its features they would stay on and then go off)...seen this forum and downloaded the dds and here's the files...would really appreciate your help with this one, as i have quite a few important pics and videos not backed up :( many, many thanks...

More likely the hard drive is dead. They are pretty well bolted in and hard to come loose. Is it really a Dell with Windows XP? Maybe a good excuse to go buy a new HP.

A:External Hard drive error message. Help!!

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the ... Read more

A:Error Message for an external Hard drive

What's the OS?
Does the drive power up and spin properly?
This is from the WD support site:

Problem: During the initial installation of an external hard drive, Windows Vista does not locate or install drivers for the external hard drive. Windows Vista might report that there is “no driver found for you device” and/or will not display the pre-installed Vista OEM drivers. Even by manually selecting the driver, you will still get the “no driver found…” error. Cause: This is most likely caused by a corrupted INFCACHE.1 file. This file stores the location of drivers and their INF files. This file is hidden, has restricted access, and can be found in “c:\windows\inf”. Resolution:
There are Microsoft HotFixes released for this issue. Please see the links below for more information on this issue:
