New PC Experiencing Freezes When on Desktop, Browsing, Etc - Never Freezes in Games.

Q: New PC Experiencing Freezes When on Desktop, Browsing, Etc - Never Freezes in Games.

My problem: I have been experiencing (situational) freezes while using my PC, these freezes require me to hold down the power button and reboot.

Details: The situations in which my pc freezes is in low or next to no stress situations, this includes; sitting on the desktop, browsing the web, idle mode, messaging people over steam and msn, and many other little things that shouldn't be causing any problems, right?

The situations in which my pc does not freeze is in games (to avoid my pc freezing while typing this I am sitting in the main menu of a game using the Steam web overlay). I can play intensive games at their maximum settings and my PC never freezes, unless it is the game's fault, and that has only happened on one occasion. It does not freeze when in low stress gaming situations either, like in the main menu of a game.

I think it is hardware related, as it happened on both of my completely separate (and individually formated) installs of Windows XP and Windows 7 (I reinstalled Windows 7 once).

This problem has occurred with both out of the box and fully updated drivers for all pieces of hardware, on XP and 7.

Errors messages:

All error messages occur before my OS is loaded and just after I have rebooted after a freeze. On my old XP install it froze and actually had to recover the system BIOS, this is when I noticed a red and orange light on my motherboard, along with 3 other green lights (the 1st one is red, the second is orange). I don't know if this means it is something plugged into the motherboard that is causing the problem or the motherboard itself.

Just this morning (on the Windows 7 install) it said it could not find the DES driver (what is that exactly?).

Is it my Motherboard, other hardware, could something have become unplugged while moving, or not plugged in properly, something else?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Unfortunately, I can't provide a whole lot of information on this problem, as there doesn't seem to be any single, consistent action that causes it. I have now experienced two BSODs, one during Metal Gear Solid 5, the other I believe was merely surfing the internet using Chrome. However, possibly even more serious, is the fact that I have experienced a considerable number of freezes, both while playing a large variety of games, and while on the internet, and sometimes even with the computer just sitting there. The freezes have been occurring for some time, but the BSODs were both within the last week or so. I appreciate any assistance people can give. Thanks!!

I have had this issue for awhile, it comes and goes.

I will be playing a computer game, it can be anything from world of warcraft to counter strike and occasionally the computer will freeze. As far as I can tell it will not respond to keyboard input or mouse movements, I do not hear any sounds when it freezes and the monitor will be frozen on whatever window is active at the time.

The only thing I can do at this point is restart the computer and shut down the computer. Upon doing either while the computer boots up it will freeze at random points (windows icon, log in screen, sometimes while the bios is loading).

Not sure if this makes any sense but if I shut down the computer and unplug the power supply and plug it back in then turn the computer on, it usually boots without freezing. I really doubt its an overheating problem because I do not let the computer cool down between restarts or the unplug/plug thing but I am open to all suggestions.

I tried to search for solutions over the internet but I can't find anything that matches my situation.
All of a sudden, the screen and the cursor stops, and the audio sounds hanged (like a glitched buzzing sound) all in a short moment. The case is, this problem happens frequently. Also, restarting would cause the problem to disappear at first, but will start to appear sooner or later.

I haven't found the cause or the trigger when this problem arises, and I hope to find a solution with you all. Thank you

Thank you for posting your system specifications. The i5 has sufficient processing power for most tasks.

Using task manager, resource monitor and/or process explorer will show if a resource is being used up by a process. This is a good first step in narrowing down causes of a slow down.

I've an Asus f5sl laptop with Vista Home Premium (32bit) but it's been freezing on me lately.

When I boot up, it gets to the black screen with the green bar but after a few seconds, the green bar freezes and I can't log in. Occasionally it boots up after around half an hour but then Vista periodically freezes for a few seconds before resuming (which is annoying when trying to write out something etc)
I don't see any problems in Safe Mode so is possibly a driver? I've updated all my drivers, completely updated using WIndows Update, ran antispyware, used System Restore etc

Only problem is; I've moved to a new country, and like a fool, I left my Vista start up disk back home. Which I would otherwise have tried.

First of all, gotta type this fast, cos its been shutting down while ive been typing, feelling right now, lol.

Random freezes, occasional BSOD message when computer restarts.

I have noticed the VGA socket is a bit bent and the display has recently became intermittent. Unsure if this is what is causing it though.

? OS - Vista/ Windows 7 ? WINDOWS 7
? x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? 32 BIT
? What was original installed OS on system? NEW BUILD WINDOWS 7
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM VERSION
? Age of system (hardware) 3 YEARS
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? 4 MONTHS (SSD INSTALLATION)

? Video Card ONBOARD
? MotherBoard GEFORCE 6100 PM - M2
? Power Supply - brand & wattage CCIVO 600W

? Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom)

If it is a VGA problem, I may tidy up the socket and install a graphics card to see if this fixes the problem. Id be grateful if anyone could look at the log and help me to understand what could be the cause of these shutdowns.

Hope I followed the instructions to the letter.

Hello for the past couple of weeks i've been experiencing mini-freezes/ stutters on my desktop while doing various task such as watching a youtube video, playing a game like a MOBA type and listening to music via itunes. Specifically speaking for about 1-2 seconds my pc will stutter in sound and freeze on screen. I cannot pin point the culprit of this issue weather it could be the RAM or CPU... etc. I have done the following tests: memtest86, prime95, windows disk check. my graphics drivers are up to date via G force experience and my OS is up to date according to windows. my idle temperatures for my components have been testing normal both under load and idle conditions via the stress test and all other testing has drawn me to no trail of suspicion on what could be the issue. My security system is Norton 360 and its up to date with its respective drivers also ive scanned my pc multiple times and its clean on viruses. all my troubleshooting has been inconclusive. So now i call upon the PC gods to grant me their wisdom please!

A:Win 7 freezes while browsing

If the PC was using Windows XP when new it may not be compatible with Windows 7.

You should run this tool to check it.

You said "So i think my Windows 7 is registred whit keygen" do you mean that your copy of Windows 7 is not genuine? We do not give assistance with non-genuine copies of Windows.

Ok, so my problem is that the computer freezes when trying to browse some pages , but most frequently at Myspace.com. This happens in all the browsers I've tried-IE,Firefox,Opera. Same thing always happens. When it happens, the only way to restart is manually. I have run spyware and virus scanners but to no avail. I use Jetico Personal Firewall and am running WinXP Professional, Radeon x800GT graphics card. I don't think it's a hardware problem but I don't know where to look for it if it's a software problem. It still freezes when I disable all startup items and even when running in safe mode. I have also reinstalled Quicktime, Adobe Flash, and Java, but it keeps freezing. This problem is really starting to bug me, so if anyone can help, thanks!

My laptop has been randomly freezing when browsing the internet (with Chrome or Firefox) or Windows Explorer.

It's not a total freeze, as if I place the cursor within half an inch of the vertical scroll bar I'm able to scroll the page. However I can't do much else other than use keystrokes to reboot.

This started about 5-6 months ago, after the machine was 4 months old.

I've tried various suggestions such as disabling Background Intelligent Transfer Service and disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available in Firefox" but the random freezing still occurs. It can happen after 2 minutes or after an hour.

Laptop is an Lenovo i3-40005U; 4GB RAM; Intel Graphics card; running pre-installed Windows 8.1.

All drivers are up to date.

Grateful for any help.

Thanks in advance

Lately, I have been experiencing freezes, I presume while browsing with Google Chrome. They happen randomly and when my computer freezes, I can still click on icons, close/open tabs on Chrome and generaly move my mouse. The only issue is that my computer won't respond to any action performed. There is no blue screen associate, there are no "Program not responding" issues, just a freeze that lasts around 10-20 seconds.

Do you people have any idea what kind of an issue that is? Thanks!

Hi folks!

Having a somewhat weird issue here. I don't know what to call it other than micro hangs/freezes. I first noticed it on YouTube (via Chrome) when video would freeze for a couple seconds, audio would continue on, then the video would unfreeze and keep going. It jumps to where it's supposed to be, as opposed to playing super fast to catch up. I noticed the same thing happening when I would be typing an email, typed words wouldn?t appear for a second or two and then suddenly catch up. I did a test of watching YouTube and typing and noticed the hang was happening at the same time (i.e. when YouTube was freezing, so was my typing). When this i happening, virtually no system resources are being used (I don?t have Adobe stuff open, etc, just a chrome browser tab with YouTube and another with email.) There's no apparent rhyme or reason, just happens randomly and not every time I?m watching YouTube, but most times and at least a few times in a 3 minute video.

What I've tried:
- ran CCleaner to fix whatever I could, cleaned Chrome cache, etc
- started running Memtest86 and so far no errors (left running at work and no errors yet after the first pass)
- I run a tight PC, no extra crap running, simple and streamlined
- running AVAST

I have no idea what this is, but it's driving me nuts. Any thoughts? Not sure what to try.

Hey Guys!!!

FF v 3.5.11
Download Statusbar, Flagfox 4.0.12, Free Download Manager Plugin 1.4.2, MS.Net Framework Assistant 1.2.1, PC Sync 2 Synchronisation Extension (for my Nokia handset), RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin 14.0.1 (all enabled)
NEW Glasser by SzymekPL, Stylish 1.0.11 (both disabled)

FF freezes up after every 2-3 hours of continuous browsing. I can't close or minimize the only way to close it is thorugh Task Manager & to minimize i have to click "show desktop" but if minimize then it won't come-up on the screen even though its open & running. So, have to close the current session & start a new session & FF doesn't recover my opened websites all the time, some time it does & while other time it choose not to.
Even there are no dialog box with an error saying that FF has crashed & have to send the report to FF support team. Also tried running with minimum Add-ons/extensions still same issue. If using FF for 10 hours in day it crashes/freezes up atleast 4-5 times.
So, need some help on this. Attaching a screenshot of this problem:

I upgraded my graphics card from GT 240 1GB GDDR5 to HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 in November 2012.But I am noticing a strange issue recently but have no idea whether the card has something to do with it.

The problem occurs very rarely though it is annoying. During browsing using Mozilla Firefox, the Firefox freezes, then whole system freezes and returns to normal within seconds with a single beep sound from speakers/headphones. I have tried "turning off hardware acceleration" but still it occurs without that.
There are no issues other this.Only freezes and returns to normal within seconds.

The driver version :Catalyst 12.8
{I have tried Catalyst 12.10 and even Beta version 12.11 but the problem exists in all drivers. But catalyst 12.8 seems to be stable with games and uses very low power while playing HD videos in my own benchmark. So I am using 12.8.}

Mozilla Firefox version : 18.0
{The same issue was present in previous Firefox versions (17 series) and I haven't tried versions older than that due to security risk}

Can anyone tell what the problem might be?
Besides graphics card is stable and fur mark test run successfully with 65-70 degree C temp as highest.

Hello BrainYtje and welcome to the Forums,

You said that you are going to try Chkdsk, so here is my advice on how to do it;

Do not do this step if your hard drive is an SSD!
Please scan your hard drive with Chkdsk.
Click on the
Open an Elevated Command Prompt.
Type the following;
chkdsk C: /F
Replace C: with the letter of your hard drive.
You will get a message that your drive is in use and that Chkdsk will be run at start up.
Please exit the command prompt, close and save any open programs and restart your machine. Chkdsk will now scan at boot.
After this, please follow this tutorial and post the log between

tags.

Do not attempt to cancel or stop the scan, this might result in a loss in data and could render your Windows unusable!

And here's my advice on how to correctly use the SFC /SCANNOW command;
Please use the SFC /SCANNOW command as displayed in option two of this tutorial.
Click on the .
Open an elevated command prompt.
Type "SFC /SCANNOW" without the quotations.
Let SFC do it's thing, and then prompted to, restart.

If SFC found and repaired anything, please do the following:
When restarted, open an elevated command prompt.

I have a PC which is sharing many of its files and 1 complete harddrive to the network. I constantly browse the shares and copy over or play accross the network. Problem is, the remote computer is continually locking up when I browse the files.

This tends to happen more when I browse the share that is 1 complete harddrive. It has a capacity of 300gb, but not anywhere near full. It does also happen when browsing another harddrive that have split up into different shares by folder (ie movies, music, apps, etc), but a little less frequently than the other.

This did begin happening after I installed the harddrive, but it has also been when we have been accessing the shares more often. I dont think it is a power supply issue because i unplugged the DVD drive and I removed a smaller harddrive when I replaced this.

So I'm not sure if it's a networking problem or a system problem, but I am leaning towards networking because also the network connection has been very slow lately. Internet speeds seem to be as good as ever, but network itself running a little slow. Sometimes it can take a while and I time out just trying to log into my router.

Currently I have 4 PC's wired on the network and 1 wireless laptop. 2 of the PC's are connected via a switch. It doesnt seem to matter which computer I am on to browse the one computers files, it always seems to freeze it up eventually.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello sevenforums. I've been experiencing a problem with browsing the internet with Google Chrome. This doesn't happen too often, but apparently enough to bother me and make a thread about it. Could someone please help me?

A:Windows freezes when browsing the internet

If this problem just recently started, you could try rolling back your computer to a date/time prior to the issue using a restore point.

System Restore

This may not be a problem with Windows 7 but rather a damaged or corrupt Chrome. You could try disabling all extensions/add-ons and then re-enable one at a time. If the freeze occurs after enabling, you'll know which extension/add-on is to blame.

Manage your extensions - Google Chrome Help

You could also uninstall Chrome and reinstall a fresh copy using Control Panel > Programs and Features. If you have problems with that method you could manually uninstall.

Uninstall Google Chrome - Google Chrome Help

Manually uninstall Google Chrome in Windows - Google Chrome Help

Hello, I regularly look on this site for issues and 9/10 someone has already found a solution to the issue I am having but this one seems to be more machine specific so I was hoping that someone out there could give me a hand.

Basically when I switch my computer on it works perfectly fine for about 10-15 minutes before freezing, I have no choice but to switch the machine off and for the rest of the day it works perfectly fine. However recently I have been getting blue screens rather frequently, particularly when browsing YouTube. It could be any random video and suddenly my browser (Firefox) freezes for 2-3 seconds before the YT video flashes green and refuses to go back to normal. Audio is still playing by the way.

A few seconds after that (if I don't close Firefox immediately most of the time) the computer completely crashes and goes to a bluescreen.

I read in other places on the forum to try using something called BlueScreenView which I did and three items came up red: dxgmms1.sys USBPORT.SYS and watchdog.sys

If you could help me with anything I would be incredibly grateful, I use this machine quite a lot and would be quite upset if I had to replace it.

I would also like to add that I'm not massively computer savvy so if you could be patient with me I would appreciate it greatly, thank you for any assistance.

A:BSOD browsing + Daily freezes

Update your video card drivers. Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer. Software license management, IT asset management, cyber security audits, and more. - Belarc Advisor
SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala - System Information for Windows

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them back:

How To Roll Back a Driver in Windows 7

Or if you installed the latest Nvidia drivers, uninstall them and install the older ones that worked. Nvidia keeps an archive of older drivers. I don't know if ATI does. I don't see anything offhand but someone else who has an ATI card might know.

Running Office xp, windows xp brand new DELL(talking 512MB RAM, 1.8 GB processor).
Reported that atleast once a day when word is open and Save as is used when
using the drop down to browse to a folder to save to it freezes.
The task manager can't even be brough up and it must be rebooted.
It is not document specific either.
Ran updated antivirus.
Also had them disable antivirus since sometimes can be the culprit but freezing still occurs.
Posted to MSNG public no response and wanted to check here before resorting to private.

Any ideas on what is going on or has this been reported before.

Thank you for your time.

A:Word 2002 freezes during save as and browsing

I don't know if this will be related but you can take a look also.

Second have you removed all programs from the start up that do not need to be running in the background. By removing them you will allow the resources to be higher and should help prevent freezing.

Try these suggestions and see if they work, if not post back and we will be glad to help you with this.

Hello Sevenforums,

Just a few days ago my laptop has been suffering from many different BSODs and freezes/random reboots and black screens. I have noticed that BSODs are completely recreatable if I run any program/game that requires 3d rendering. Even when browsing the internet, after an hour or less a random freeze/bsod occurs. Rarely, if sound is playing the very end of it will loop until the computer is restarted.

I`ve tried doing a lot of things to pinpoint the problem, but to no avail.

I have:
Updated most drivers. There were at least 20 outdated but some still need updating...
Ran memtest86 and had 2 passes out of 2. (4gb ram)
System restored to long before the problem originated
Completely reset to factory settings.

Now for the multitudinous bsods I have encountered, they have included these error names:

And others, including no error name at all at the top...

I assumed because it always happens when 3d rendering(e.g. chess titans that comes with win 7 is a good example) it may be the video card/driver. But, I am not sure if that is the cause because it happens randomly as well, when the graphics card may not be in use.

I attached the dump file according to the guide.
I will be following this closely for help, thank you. If i need to add any additional info, just post.

Hello! For the past few days while browsing my mouse suddenly freezes for 2/3 seconds and the cursor gets all colorful and after a few minutes my computer just completely freezes and fails to respond to anything. After restarting I get a message about a BSOD with a BCCODE of 124. I'm suspecting it's due to the latest video drivers I installed but I'm not completely sure.

Attachment 294879

A:[BCCODE 124] Mouse freezes followed by a BSOD while browsing

Hi Sven24.

Your suspect may be absolutely right. Install the NVIDIA DRIVERS 314.22WHQL only.
Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features3D Vision Control Driver
3D Vision Driver
Graphics Driver
HD Audio Driver
nvidia Update
(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
Download 314.22 WHQL. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:
Let us know the results. If it BSODs again, Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions. A stray crash bump does not provide enough information.

I never experienced this before, but when I try to access the following hotfix folders the PC freezes. I found this as my Avira scan kept stopping (and Windows shut down itself with a message I never saw it before) and tired to see it with Windows Explorer. I searched on the net, but couldn't find any solution yet. It looks updspapi.dll is somehow corrupted. I used the DOS command and I could use DIR command to show the files in the folders, but COPY and MOVE commands just hung. I narrowed down to five folders by scanning only selected folders/files. I used SUPERAntiSpyware, which hung at the same place. I cannot remember when was the last successful scanning by Avira, but it could be a year ago. Certainly I installed some softwares since the last scanning, but I cannot tell exactly which ones were installed since the last scan. I have another PC with XP Home SP3 and I don't have any problem accessing these. I thought this could be a virus at the beginning, but not sure now. Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I have a problem I cannot solve with drivers or software, I have serviced two HP's that have the same recurrent problem, basically, they randomly freeze with no response from any part of the OS (Vista business SP2 32bit) when browsing the web, and later on just randomly with the older NC6000. The first one that exhibited the problem was an old NC6000, everything works fine on it, just this random total freeze that requires a hard shut down to fix after between 20 minutes and an hour of usage.

Now it's successor, the NC6400 has the same problem, in fact I am typing this post on it now, with no problems, just that without warning, without any kind of similar actions before, it just freezes with the screen showing what I was doing at the moment in time.

All of the drivers are updated to the latest versions on both these machines, and the hardware (DVD drive, quick launch, wireless, bluetooth, ambient light sensor etc.) seems to have no problems.

Some possible solutions or remedies would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks, Dann

You can run a virus scan with Malware bytes: Malwarebytes

Try doing a system restore to a point before your problem occured.

Performance tweaks:
Speed Up the Performance of Vista

run chkdsk to see if you have any hdd problems: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP

run memtest86 to see if you have memory problems: Memtest86 - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Go into safe mode and open the elevated command prompt and type in: sfc /scannow
to check for file integrity errors.

*Do all of the above in safe mode (repeatedly pressing f8 after post).

I am experiencing some problems with my "Asus essentio desktop pc".
When I am browsing the internet using several tabs the mouse sometimes "get stuck" for about 2-3 seconds and then the mouse symbol is starting to act strange.. This is like a prelude to my computer not responding at all. Not by mouse or by keyboard, no matter what combinations I try... Then I have no choice but to turn the computer off by using the On/Off button on the chassi.
When I start it again, sometimes it´s working allright again, until the same procedure starts over. First the mouse acting strange, then it not responing at all..
At other times, when I start it up again it tells me I have a problem with the driver for my network adapter. But if I just pull the network adapter-plug out, then in again it works fine.
Do I have a virus? I have tried reinstalling windows 7 again, but it doesn´t help.
I would be VERY grateful for your help, because this is just killing me!

Does this issue exist within all browsers or just one specific? Have you looked to see if there are any software updates available for your system.
Try running MBAM: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/

Yesterday I upgraded from IE 9 to IE 10 on Win7 32-bit.  Today I noticed if I am in the GUI of any of our Sonicwall Firewalls, and I mouse over an item and a popup comes up, IE freezes.  In about 15 seconds at the bottom of the page I get the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
is not responding - Recover webpage.  I select Recover and I get back to the page.  I can navigate fine until my mouse goes over a comment ballon or statics ballon.  Then it freezes.
This is really annoying.  Never had this problem with IE 9.  I am hoping it is a setting I can adjust in IE 10.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

My pc freezes while playing several games, after playing it a while.
It gives no error or BSOD it just stops.
This happend in:

- Supreme Commander 2.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (not in Black Ops).
- Guild Wars.

Apparently I already fixed the Guild Wars problem, had to do something with rights.
But the same error in windows log occurs when the other games freeze.
And there seems to be no rights issues. (My account is also the only account, and it's admin).

In windows log it gives the following error: (3 times everytime it happens).

A:PC Freezes in Games

I had a freeze problem a while back, turned out to be the motherboard was bad. Then I had BSODs, turned out to be drivers. Don't bother with 'Driver Detector' and all that crud that they want you to pay for, go to the actual manufacturers websites for drivers. Just for hoots, try disabling your onboard sound in the BIOS and see what happens. up to date Realtek drivers are important if you are using onboard LAN or sound.

So as the title says my PC freezes in SOME games (Crysis 2, Max Payne 3)

After 5-10 minutes of playing my computer freezes, black screen, sound buzzing and i have to do hard reset.

Here is my configuration:

Intel Core2Quad 2.53
Ram 4gb ddr3 1600mhz
Graphic: Ati radeon HD5750(VTX)
PSU: Gigatech 550w (i think that my psu is main reason for freezing)

My drivers are updated, bios flashed, i ve done everything, there's no way that something is wrong with software. I've also tried to instal another OS, but problem is still there. My ingame max temperature of GPU is 63 c?, processor 55c?.
