Superfetch gone mental?

Q: Superfetch gone mental?

In theory, Superfetch seems like a good idea, but could it suffer from a bit of insanity? I've noticed, that when I've used a virtual machine (in VMWare) and shut down the virtual machine, the HDD LED lights up for 5-10 minutes and the HDD noise is a major nuisance. Looking in resource monitor, it seems that Vista keeps reading the virtual disk file of the VM I've just shut down. Stopping Superfetch stops the HDD noise.

Why would Superfetch start caching a VM disk file when I've shut down the VM? Isn't the whole point of Superfetch to cache files before I use them, and not when I've finished using them?

Also, when I start the system, the HDD works constantly the first 20-30 minutes. I've got 8 GB RAM, and reading 8 GB from the disk doesn't take 20 minutes, so how can Superfetch spend so much time reading the disk when it should have filled all the available cache memory within 10 minutes of frantic HDD reading?

Preferred Solution: Superfetch gone mental?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Superfetch gone mental?

I had similar experiences. In fact, Superfetch slowed things down instead of speeding things up due to its massive HDD-access. It also took like 10 minutes after a reboot till it was finished (I have 4GB RAM) and it did its chores repeatedly since I use many RAM-excessive applications. I have 3 HDDs in my comp and they are not the newest models so I also had to stand quite the noise.

My solution? Disable it altogether. I realized an increase in speed due to Superfetch not occupying my HDDs and with them the system bus and my whole system got a lot more responsive and less noisier. As for the long loading times, that's quite normal. Don't forget that Superfetch might load a lot of small files which might be scattered all over your HDD (even if they weren't, reading small files is significantly slower than reading large ones). And it does all that while you're already working on the system which means that it has to flush pre-loaded parts due to new applications demanding RAM and then it has to reload the data. All in all, that's a never-ending task. Personally, I think that Superfetch rather helps wearing down your hard drives fatser (unless you're using SDDs) instead of accomplishing much. The idea behind it is nice, but it's still too basic to be of much use. For example it doesn't give you the option to exclude or specifically force the loading of files. Same goes for loading files according to certain file orders etc.

Anyway, give deactivating it a try and see if you see notable performance hits/increases.

I am being overtaken by my homepage turning to blank. I'm unable to log into MSN inbox, as before it completly loads it switches to about.blank, and a 'search for' engine appears. Spysweeper continuously asking me if I want to change my home page to 'about.blank'. Upon logging onto my PC loads of programmes open and now my internet connection is getting a bit dodgy . I have run spy sweeper I have run ad-Aware, but nothing changes , I've run CCleaner and spybot ,(There is a message thast says there are certain things that can't be deleted , and I should delete them from registary. I was mad and downloaded what i now know to be a mistake, such as Gain, and Gator, but not for a while and like I say things are getting worse and worse , and I need to get this to you before the PC (Or me), finally crack up completely. Hello. i am new to this webstie and have read some of the threads dealing with this issue i will present, but none have helped explain to me what i must do, and if there is already a thread with an explaination of the solution, please let me know. ok here it goes:

i have a page on myspace that is for artists, we are able to download our music onto it but the music must be in MP3 form. My question is, if all my music is in .m4a form, how do i go about converting it into MP3 form so i can be able to post it onto my page??? Is there some kind of embed code i can use to work around the " MP3 only"?? i use itunes to save my music, but i am not able to convert the ID3 tags of my songs. i have also had the person who runs the studio i work in, make me a copy of the songs in MP3 form and put them onto a CD disk, which still didnt work, is this wrong to do??? please i am near desperate to get my music onto my myspace page. thank you to all and any who help me

A:Need Some Help (not mental )

If your music is important why would you put it on MySpace instead of creating a real web site?
Try a Google search for m4a to MP3.

Kind people as with many families my Father is now suffering from rapidly declining Mental capabilities. I have searched Google and Dogpile and other places for some Brain exercise for him. I did find a perfect place for what I am looking for. It is called luminosity. This is located at http://www.lumosity.com .
It is unfortunate the number of kinds of medicine that my Dad uses is in price equivalent to a Mortgage Payment each and every month. So even small luxuries such as a membership in the above web site have to be carefully weighed.

My Question therefore becomes: Do you know of, or can you show me how to find a site or sites that can duplicate these kinds of Brian exercises?
Any effort and all suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Hi all;
Yesterday, I noticed that it was taking my computer a very long time to start up when I turned it on.
But this morning came the real problem: it took my computer about 3 minutes to get to the start screen, and when I inserted my password to log into Windows, the screen would turn black, the computer would start making noises, but it would never actually go to the main Windows screen.

To solve this problem, I decided to reset my computer to how it was three days ago, before I installed the last batch of Windows updates. This allowed me to turn on the computer and start Windows all right, but once this was done I ran into even more problems. To keep it short:

- My computer is ridiculously slow. I noticed a lot of 'svchost' processes running, but nothing else apart from that.
- I cant open Mozilla Firefox. I click on the icon, but it just wont open. I tried installing Google Chrome, but once I do that it doesnt let me open it.
- I CAN open Internet Explorer, but with some limitations. It runs very slowly, and wont let me access hotmail.com - it tells me that there is a certificate error, and no matter what I try, it just wont let me go there.
- For some reason, I found that avast! (my anti-virus software) was switched off. I dont know if this happened as a result of all the other problems, or if it is an independent issue.

Does anyone have any ideas of why my laptop has had such a mental breakdown?

Thanks so much in advance

Hey everyone! New here as one could tell.

To start off, desperately need help. I’m at my last hair and still have no idea how to resolve this issue.

Windows.old = I absolutely cannot delete it. No matter what I do. I’ve already checked the permissions, tried the disk clean-up, tried deleting it manually by dragging and dropping as well as trying in safe mode. I even used a software and every other tutorial on the web. And yet I still cannot delete this folder. I constantly get told that access is denied etc etc. I’ve spend the past 24 hours Googling as well as trying the good old try and see what happens options. Still nothing. Not to mention the system freezes every 2 seconds making it difficult to do anything. Even safe mode.

To the operating system/problem in question:

Windows 7 Home x64 bit. The laptop I’m trying to repair was completely messed up (Spyware, Trojan and all that good stuff). Upon trying to repair it, I figured just re-installing Windows 7 would do the trick to get a nice fresh start. I should have known better. Now I have this windows.old file that won’t budge. Is there ANY WAY I can get rid of it? One I may have not tried yet? Put into account that everything freezes everytime I tried to do something on the OS. I really don’t want to attempt at doing another Windows reinstall and get this problem again. :/

If there’s any other specs you need, I’ll provide them as much as possible given the syste... Read more

Hi. . .

If you purchased the system as-is (vs. building it), there probably is a manufacturer's hardware diagnostic program. Click on start and enter HP, Sony, etc... and see what options you are presented with.

Also check in with WERCON - Prob Rpts & Solutions -
START | type wercon.exe | select same above under programs. View each option - top left of the screen.

Hi guys, hope everyone is doing well.

I have this mental block with WINRAR

Does anyone really understand this? If so I would really appreciate anyone posting an easy explanation of both, what they are for, how to use them etc. I have posted some great movies on my forum. When I download them on megaupload, there is never a problem and they go automatically into Windows Media and the movie starts. When I download on Rapidshare I only have the choice of WINRAR or WM and then after downloading with WM I get the message "Can't handle this file. When I download with WINRAR, after I get the message, Needs volume something but nothing provided or no further info???

I am getting the same message in both WMP and winrar about the volume missing.

I only seem to get it when I download with Rapidshare, not with Megaupload. I have successfully watched other movies on WMP before. Can you talk me through it, maybe its something wrong with winrar. When I put the first link into RS to start, it offers this choice

Open with...... winrar or WMP or
Save File

Those are the only choices

Do I save file first or do I put it directly into winrar or WMP, do all rar files have to go into winrar first or can they be opened with WMP, because sometimes when I have tried to open with WMP, when I begin to watch the movie, it says WMP does not support this file type. Other times the movie runs fine. I'm stumped, I hope someone can help.

I was testing Counter-Strike: Source on a new GeForce 8600GT (also new cpu and mem) and it was fine until about 15 minutes in. I had loaded a popular custom config from a gaming site and after a few minutes I started seeing distorted pixels. Then there were lines and big blocks of the map which were wrong colours, then finally everything climaxed to a mess of crazy abstract patterns and my comp froze.

I thought it must have been the config but when I booted Windows there were still some graphics problems like random blue squares and lines on the boot screen, then it froze. I tried again, same problem. Decided to leave it for 10 minutes and now it's fine.

Could it be a setting in the config? Surely it didn't over heat just playing CS:Source?

I have a asus w5f notebook with a tft lcd screen, over the last couple of weeks it has flickered when ive shut the lid, then a few days ago the state of flickering stayed there, it gets a big whitish tint across the screen starting from the middle and fading out to the sides, and a rainbow effect on the left hand side of the screen, the right hand side is pretty much ok.
I took the thing to bits and have isolated the problem to either:
1 the inverter
2 the lcd screen
3 the ribbon cable.

When i twist the screen with my fingers, one finger on the top left pulling towards me, and one finger on the top right pushing away from me, it goes back to normal, until i let go. also if i pull the top left side toward me and push in the middle of the screen it goes normal too. This gives me the idea that it is something repairable if the screen being twisted bent or skewed makes it ok again.
the backlight is fine as far as i know, when i look down the back of the screen i can see the thin bright light along the bottom of the screen.
Please help, im trying to do this on a budget, so if i can fix it for free or cheaply that would be great!

I have had a nagging BSOD when rendering in Maya 2015 with my machine. The problem is much more abundant and repeatable every time when running a 'batch render' (rendering a batch or multiple number of frames as opposed to single frame rendering) I typically do not have issues when rendering only a single frame. However, it is very inefficient to render each frame one at a time. I need help and have researched a bit to no avail...

I have searched and found some threads with supposed solutions.
I have attempted a solution found from a forum that stated to disable NVIDIA Stream Streamer Service from Services.msc. This helped with Batch Rendering, but still caused a crash after 6 frame renders. 6 Frames is much better than previously ( typically 1 and then BSOD before), but the BSOD is still plaguing me.

I am at a loss at this point. Please assist! I have attached the requested .zip that includes the content stored after running the .exe found in the BSOD Posting Tutorial Thread.

Windows SuperFetch enables programs and files to load much faster than they would on Windows XP–based PCs.

When you're not actively using your computer, background tasks—including automatic backup programs and antivirus scans—run when they will least disturb you. These background tasks can take up system memory space that your programs had been using. On Windows XP–based PCs, this can slow progress to a crawl when you attempt to resume work.

SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them. Windows Vista also runs background programs, like disk defragmenting and Windows Defender, at low priority so that they can do their job but your work always comes first."

But why does it keep failing? It is helping me in no way at all when it just goes, and I have to reboot. Meh.

Oh. Merry xmas everyone. (:

Iv'e just disabled mine as it was slowing the laptop down considerably, i was facing constant freezes and programs taking ages to open, switching superfetch off has sped the system considerably, ive read a few articles that advocate the use of superfetch,so i would like more info based on members experiences.
ive run some progs at the same time and what would normally open slow and freeze the laptop when trying to open multi progs ,
they have run fine with decent opening speeds. photoshop for instance opened in half the time, easily half probably more

the only thing i havent checked is the boot speed, will check in a few mins, i have soluto installed so i will have an accurate test comparison for the last boot speeds.

what are your thoughts / experiences with superfetch.

edit; just rebooted and soluto informs me my boot speed was 6 seconds longer, this to me is minimal in comparison to the benefits recieved with the freed up ram.

Leave it on.

I have 6 gigs of Memory. But my system keeps caching all of what is not being used. Should I change the parameter, in the registry, from 3 to something else? I don't want to turn it off completly, and I understand a parameter of 1 would be best.

It seems that my system slows down when it has to go to the cache to find memory for an application. I would think that some memory should be available when launching a program for faster response.

Please advise. Should I fool with it?

I saw that there was a post on this and it was closed so here it is again. Superfetch will not start. Says can't find file. One member had an answer about an IO program causing a hiding of a file so that was the reason. I would like to know what that IO program was so I can delete it and see if it works for me. Thanks

A:Superfetch again.

Thanks to ShotgunFred over at SevenForums for this fix.

Yes, i had the same problem (I have reinstalled windows a few time recently (new harddrive), the same problem arises (must be a conflict with the software I use) ! I solved this today!

Hi, is it ok to disable the superfetch in vista?,and will it make any difference to the system?,just that I keep getting error messages saying that it has stopped working, when browsing within firefox, so I might disable it??,any ideas?, I checked the error reports, but nothing helps. Thanks Rip

I disabled it as soon as I got my machine. The disk clatter drove me crazy. You may see some performance degradation on start up depending on hardware and working set. I never did see any,

Hi, can someone please tell me if it is advisable to disable superfetch??, and if so, will it improve overall performance?
Thank You

Hello Rip,

I would not advise to disable Superfetch. It is designed to help improve your computer's performance when enabled. However, you can do a test by seeing how your computer runs with it disabled and enabled just for fun. It will not hurt anything to test.

I constantly hear that Superfetch should be turned off when you run the OS on an SSD. I totally fail to see the point.

RAM is still a lot faster than the fastest SSD and a good pack of cached stuff enhances performance. So why would anybody want to miss that opportunity.

The only argument I have seen is that people are afraid that the extra write operations would wear the SSD. I think this is phony. Measurements have shown that the SSDs will last a lot longer than you care to keep it.

Any other arguments??

A:Superfetch and the SSD

I leave my superfetch on.... I've had SSDs for over a year, and my first one is still at 100% life left... and I tend to format and reinstall alot cause I'm OCD about my computers.... I just recently upgraded my main system to two Vertex 3 120gb drives in a raid 0... I can't imagine using a HDD for a boot drive anymore... I make very few "tweaks" to my SSD"s

So, in short, I agree, the worry about writing too much is a bit overhyped, especially on the latest gen drives...

Is there a way to make superfetch only "fetch" applications and not the entire movie I watched the other day?

Why would you want to do that? Maybe you have the wrong understanding of what Superfetch does. May I suggest this article: SuperFetch: How it Works & Myths

Hi... new here and have learned lots and lots!
I have a new computer (Mar 2011) and after reading everything here about installing the SP1, I bit the bullet. Everything went smoothly.
The next day I noticed my boot time went from 45 sec to 95. From posts here, I waited 5 days to see if things "settled" down and no change. Sooooo.... I looked at the events logs and noticed the following events that occurred during the SP1 installation....

(info) superfetch service was changed from auto start to demand start....
(info) superfetch service entered the stopped state and finally....
(error) the superfetch service terminated with the following error "The service has not been started"
Subsequent boot-ups events make no mention of superfetch.

I do not know if superfetch was enabled prior to the SP installation and now am trying to get my boot time back to a reasonable time. Should I enable superfetch? The current status is "manual".

I've read everything on this forum about superfetch and notice some say that with a lot of ram, 8GB, it is not needed and won't help. My applications seem to open without much delay but this boot time is driving me nuts!

Ran malware bytes and ccleaner = o problems
Disabled most entries in msconfig start-up
I'm holding up on installing windows updates (29 of em now) so that this problem gets fixed first.

Appreciate any help.......

A:To superfetch or not?

Superfetch should have been enabled - Automatic (Delayed Start) in Services by default with a new installation of Windows.

The only reason to have Superfetch disabled, would be if you had an SSD. And even then, it's 50/50 on if it should be disabled or enabled with an SSD.

If you just have a HDD then it should be enabled - Automatic (Delayed Start).

My Windows 7 keeps switching from Aero theme to the regular theme. Every time it switches from Aero to regular, it says Superfetch stopped working.
Any clues what could be bothering Superfetch? D:

Yes it could be a compatibility problem with your usb memory stick, or is that ready boost? Think I got mixed up.

Hi folks, hope this is finding y'all well.

Got a quickie regarding Vista's feature called SuperFetch. From what I understand it is designed to prepare maintenance tasks to be run during idle CPU times.

Why would this service automatically shut itself down, or error out? If Vista is supposed to be "self-healing", then how is it that this native Vista feature can't figure out how to keep itself alive?

Further, does this feature erroring out have any impact on other elements (memory management, buffering, file extension recognition, etc)? Every once in a while I have to reboot in order to be able to re-activate the right-click features in the explorers.

Looking forward to your feedbacks!

Have they changed its code in some fundamental way? I always used to have to disable it eventually on vista as it was very greedy with ram, quite frequently leaving me with very little head room. But, on W7 it seems incredibly well behaved. It's almost as if is not enabled.

How much RAM do you have installed?

I have alwsays been getting fast and decent replies here so I?m starting a new thread (I hope this is the right place to start it) :P

This might be to much text for you guys but please read the two headlines atleast (and sorry for my bad english).

My problem is that I can?t get my superfetch to start!
The symptoms is:
My theme keeps switching between my custom theme and Window 7s Aero theme. My Internet card seems to have some trouble as well but i have found temporary solutions for that (It does NOT necessarily have anything to do with superfetch but figured i should mention it).

I found out about superfecth when i bought this USB stick yesterday and was going to use as a ready boost. Now in "proporties>Ready boost" tab of the USB stick win7 said that Sysmain was disabled but could be enabled with some tool, so i googled it and found superfetch and it was disabled.

Here is where the problem starts: when i press start on the superfetch service it starts as it should but after 3 min its off, the internet card is inactivated and the Aero theme is back. If I put in the USB stick directly after i?ve started superfetch everything as mentioned above happens but without the 3 minutes of waiting...

By the way, i dont get any messages about superfetch doesnt work or anything.

Anyone got a clue? ... please help

When you look at you Event Viewer Logs do you get an error number or anything pertaining to readyboost or superfetch? Type event viewer in the Start/Search Bar and hit return to open event viewer and take a look and post any errors that you see.
