I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and have a question. I recently had to set my system back to factory settings. Now when I go to a new web site using Firefox I get the following error message...

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate version, 32-bit with both Service pack 1 and 2 installed. I have no idea of how to correct this problem and I know everyone on this forum are brilliant! So any help would really be appreciated.

Hello TSF.

Whilst fixing my computer using the tools of Hiren's boot CD, (Which have infact worked) I ran a program I was unaware of called Ghost Walker which changed my SID. At that time, I had no idea what an SID was. It seemed to abort mid 'change'.

Anyway, I logged on as normal, only to find my documents were 'gone'. Documents folder 'Liam' has just and empty folder of My Pictures and My Music. Futhermore, A new folder called Liam.LIAM was in 'Documents and Settings'. It is inaccessible.

I really need these files, I have yet to explore what else is missing from my computer. I have Coursework from hundreds of hours work ect on there. Not backed up.

Thanks.

Don't know what OS you are working with but in general, if you can get into safe mode, a system restore to just before you changed the refresh rate should return it to the previous setting.

Following the directions outlined in Change Directory in Command Prompt including enabling command extensions outlined in Command Line does not permit the CD command to change the directory focus to a directory with a space in its name. I am trying to set the active directory prompt to C:\Users\Owner\My Documents. I can get to C:\Users\Owner but with command extensions enabled in administrator mode (CMD E:ON) the CD command will not accept My Documents as a valid directory name within Owner. The error I get is "The system cannot find the path specified." My goal is to get a directory tree (as a file) of the directories and files in My Documents with the DIR command when in that directory. The complete DOS line for that command would read C:\Users\Owner\My Documents>DIR /o:n /s > DirTreeList.txt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Long story short, I was going to format my usb but I must have accidentally clicked on my C drive instead. Anyways, during the format of my only drive, a Samsung SSD, my computer crashed and I restarted it. I want originally worried because I thought I was formatting a 2gb usb flash drive. Afterward, my computer no longer detects my SSD in my bios. It's my SSD fried, or can I still save it?

A:accidental format of C drive

Hello and welcome iced dragoon I doubt if the drive is fried mate probably a bit confused I should say and I do hope you have data backed up.

So can you slip it into another machine and see if it is "seen" there?? If so then you can reformat and align it before doing a reinstall.
with this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/113967-ssd-alignment.html

My 6 year old laptop running Windows 7 is out of warranty, so here i am seeking help as i am not very computer literate. All i need to know is how many partitioned drives came with my HP laptop. My niece was playing on my laptop without my knowledge and had accidentally formatted Drive-G... i know this much, that Drive-C is my main drive, and Drive-D is the recovery drive to restore my laptop... But what is Drive-G which is only about 101 MB in size? ... does it contain any crucial operating files or data that i need to restore back on to the G-drive, or can i ignore the lost data on Drive-G? I have never added any partitions to my laptop as that is beyond my ability. I tried using a free Data Recover software, and it identified about a couple of hundred files with 6 different types of file extension such as: f0020856.regf0021056_bootvhd.dkkf0021248_mediag.exe.muif0081920_bootresf0051186.dbff0081546.ttf Is this a virtual drive, a casche drive, or....? Can i ignore what was lost, or do i need to be concerned to pay for the Data Recovery software to restore those lost files? Thank you guys in advance for your help.

Hi really sorry if this is the wrong place but need help.

I was adding a new drive to my PC's storage spaces only due to it being from and old laptop it had the reserved OEM partition so windows refused to add it, I went and used a partition software to delete all partitions on the drive so I could add it only as it was the same size and make as one of the other drives already in my storage space i stupidly chose the wrong one.

As you would expect the Storage space Pool failed and the dis was marked as disconnected only its not its there but had it table deleted. I have been googleing all night and have yet to find a way to repair this yet I know its there cos using the software from ReclaiMe Storage Spaces Recovery Software it detects the pool and can see all the stuff on it bit dosn't have and option to repair just recover I don't want to do this as it the the lack of space that caursed this

I have gone through the powershell route and have managed to change the drive from "Retired" to "Auto-Select" but am still not able to get the pool to repair of work.

someone said use testdisk but this finds the partition but its listed as "unknown" to I cant retrive this what am I missing?!?!?!
Thanks so much for any help on this

Hi my advent monza t100laptop was turned off by my grandson shuting down and when I turned it back on I get aptio setup utility on screen and been told lost harddrive can I use my advent vsta harddrive and ry that in monza t100thanks

A:Hard Drive reported as empty after accidental power off during shutdown

What is the exact error message?
If your are getting the Setup Utility, then you probably still have the HDD and it is not lost. The HDD may, however have failed.
You can create an Ubuntu Live CD and boot off of that and it will allow you to browse your C: drive. This will also confirm that you do have a C: drive still and it is not lost. Then you can save any personal files to a USB HDD.
Once you are safely backed up, you can Run the Setup Utility and restore the computer to Factory Defaults. If that fails the HDD may need to be replaced and Windows will need to be reinstalled.

Hello sfjmdsp,

There's no need to try and change the location of library since the files in a library are not stored in the library, but actually stored at the location of the included folder.

If you like, you could change the default "Save to" folder to another included folder for where files are saved to by default when you move/copy them into a library.Library - Set Save Folder
Hope this helps,

A:How do I change my music directory

You should make a new folder on your D drive and name it whatever you want. (ex. My Music) Then put you music in that folder as opposed to just leaving it on D: (the root) Then you can RIGHT click the folder and select "send to" and then "to Desktop as a shortcut" Then drag the new shortcut to the START button. Then when you click on My Music, it will go to that new folder with your music in it. That is one of about 1000 ways to do it. Play around a bit.

I just finished installing Win 7 on its own drive (for the 2nd time) and on a separate partition. The problem is that I can't point "Program Files" to its partition. I watched the video by W.H. Schroeder but when i click on "Properties" for the file folder "Program Files" Win 7 does not show a "Location" tab so could change it from C: to M:. There must be a way because others have multiple partitions in Win 7 but it seems to be eluding me.

A:How to change LOCATION of a directory in Win 7

You can move the User folders if you want.
Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Podcasts

In fact, I would recommend do this, keeping User DATA seperate from the OS.

1) It keeps fragmentation down
2) I makes creating a system Image/Backup much faster.
3) In the even you must reinstall Windows, all of your User DATA in these folders will remain on the selected hard Drive, so you do not loose it by formating.

But you can not move "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"
And why would you want to?

If installed programs are not with the OS and you must restore a image or backup to a time BEFORE a certain app was installed, it may no longer work.

If you re-instal Windows, those applications on the other drive may no longer work either.
You will still have to re-install them.

Installed programs should be with Windows.

If for Some reason you want an Application installed to a different drive (separate from the OS) you can simply make a Folder on that drive for those programs.
Then manually choose the install directory.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding your question here.

Okay, now I know this has been answered on the internet hundreds and hundreds of times; but I cannot seem to find one that just answers it with the answer I am looking for.

Keep in mind that I cannot:

1) Use batch files [due to administrator blocking them]
2) I cannot access the appdata or roaming folder [also blocked by the admin]
3) I already have a .minecraft folder on my flash drive [yet I can't get my program to load from it]

So, if there are any suggestions or information you can get for me; or even do for me, I would appreciate it.

I'm not asking much to be honest, I just wish there was a much faster and easier way to edit the exe program or something to place the .minecraft folder onto my flash drive and not into the %appdata% folder or anything.

So seriously, can someone give me some sort of help... cause otherwise, I can't even use any of my Minecraft mods or anything.

I can't even use texture packs because I cannot access the appdata folder nor the roaming folder.

[I don't own a computer, so I play Minecraft from the library; sadly, they have the folder I need to access BLOCKED]

Please... someone, if anyone... can you either help me figure this out, or edit my program for me; that way I can finally play the freaking thing with my mods, texture packs and more.s

[Minecraft 1.6.2]

A:How do you change the .minecraft directory?

Welcome to TSG!

I do see the batch file in the video, are they blocked completely like from all sources or just from the library computer harddrive?
If you can run one off a USB then http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1519526-running-minecraft-from-a-usb-drive/
That looks like the entire game runs off USB.
So if you had all your mods and things on it you would have them on any computer you plug into.
Now without access to the library files, you would need to ask a friend to use their computer in order to copy the files you need. Sadly you would lose anything saved on the library computer, but once you have your USB, you can take it anywhere.

From what I can tell that is the only way. Unless someone can change the code in a custom .exe for you. Sadly I don't know how to do that.

It's akin to paddling upstream to try to get programs to install and run from a drive other than the system drive.
Windows has been around enough years that if anyone seriously wanted you to have that capability they'd have made sure it was both easily configurable and that applications responded to it properly.
Practically speaking, it's simply much better to get a large system drive (e.g., that high performance 512 GB SSD you've always secretly wanted) and just
install things under the default folder on the system drive.  You'll find they'll work best that way after having been installed too.  Why?  Because most product testing is done with default installations.

I would advise against trying to change these system folders they are there for a reason

Program Files is for native 64 Bit applications
Program Files(X86) is for 32 Bit applications running in emulation mode

Hello,

I would like to change the default directory (Librairies\Documents) which shows up when opening a file browser from a third party software (most 3d party softwares at least).
It also show up when opening a new explorer from C:\Windows\explorer.exe directly. So I think there is some option to change in the registry or in an .ini file but I can find no info on it.

NB:
I am well aware that similar posts exist (all over the web) and that the "solution" is to change the target directory in the Start Menu or launch bar shortcut: this is not what I want. I tried it (out of curiosity mostly) and, predictably, it has no effect on the explorer.exe executable and therefore none on the third party softwares.

Hi I just bought a new computer for my mother in law. I created the first account..that is an administrator for my mother in law. Then I used her account to create another admin account for myself. This is for Windows 10. I logged in with my microsoft ID and everything looked fine. Then I started discovering things weren't working properly in the account so I contacted support for my computer.

They thought that maybe I should create a new user account and see if that fixes the bugs. The support person created an account called "Test." Once I examined "Test" to see if everything was functional, and it was, I deleted my old/original account and logged in with my microsoft ID on the "test" account. From the main screen it shows my picture, and when I log in, my walpaper and other settings are there. It even shows my proper name in the account.

I thought everything was ok, but then I went into the user directory from CMD and noticed that my user directory was still called test and that the account I deleted was still showing up.

This is a simple registry hack to change the default directory you see when opening command prompt. I like to have it set to the OS root drive, but you can change it to whatever you like. This will keep you from having to use the "change directory" switch every time you open command prompt, which can be more than a little annoying.

1.) Open up registry editor by typing "regedit" [without the quotes] in the search box, and then clicking on the link up top.

2.) Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Command Processor and search for the string "Autorun" in the left window. If that string is not existing yet, create it. Double-click it afterwards and add the new directory path in the following way: CD /d C:\

3.) If you would like the command prompt to open in the system32 folder, use this string instead:
CD /d C:\windows\system32

4.) Close the registry editor, and then open the command prompt to check your work.

As you can see, you can easily change the default directory to whatever you like. Hope this helps you from being annoyed at the command prompt.

Right click and select properties... You will see this....

In the "Start in" box type the path where you want the command prompt to open.
You can even make multiple copies of the shortcut and have them available to open in any convenient place you like...

In addition there are a number of variables that can be used...

%HOMEDRIVE% = the root folder of your system partition
%APPDATA% = the application data folder for each user
%HOMEPATH% = your user folder
%PUBLIC% = your public folder
%SYSTEMROOT% = windows folder
%PROGRAMFILES% = program files folder
%TEMP% = user's temp folder

and I'm sure there are more...

Hey, i recently made a newmachine with a SSD drive, so i will be using another hard drive for document storage. I have moved all the locations for things like music, videos, etc to a new directory.

However wen i go to start menu, and i see my user account (ghost3h) wen i click on it it goes to the ssd drive location.

So basicaly wat i want to do is change the directory of that button on the start menu so wen i click Ghost3h on the start menu, it will go to my D drive not my C drive.

I know it will be somewere in my regeditory but cnt find it.

Anyone please?

A:Start menu User directory change

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

I would not mess with that, you could make a short cut to your desired folder or drag the folder to the start menu and it will pin in there, on the top, please try not to mess with that directory,

Regards,

Marco.P

Hello. I want to have File Explorer open pointing to C: and not libraries.

I got as far as putting a new "target" in the Properties tab... or as far as wanting to, but I can't write anything there.

Can someone help me get that area writeable? Does the question make sense?

Thanks!

Bob

I want to set up a guest account which cannot access c: (or d:, e: or any drive directly), in fact the user should not be able to access anything above his own profile directory %USERPROFILE% (e.g. c:/documents and settings/<USERNAME>/* is allowed, c:/documents and settings/ or c:/ is forbidden)
The problem of course is that programmes started by that user must be able to access their own programme folders, but calling a file selector dialogue within the programme may only allow access to objects inside user's %USERPROFILE%. Even typing e.g. "c:\" must not work.

Anyone can help?

A:How do you change the default directory when you type cmd from the run menu

Why do you need to do that? I would say, just copy cmd.exe into the directory where you want it to start, then issue the command with the path. For example. c:\temp\run.

Hi everybody. About 2 days ago I noticed that all of a sudden my scroll and progress bars, and all of the prompt windows (save, open file, etc.) changed to a Windows 98 style! I didn't think anything of it until I tried to save an image through Firefox and it wouldn't bring up the prompt to choose a location. Initially I thought it to be exclusive to Firefox, but later I had worked on an Word document and when I tried to Save As... the exact same thing, a flash indicating that it tried to open the location window and that's it. Every program does the exact same thing, no way to bring up a location menu or change directory.

Does anybody have any idea as to what can cause this?

Thanks.

A:Unable to change or save file to any directory!

Run a full antivirus scan
Download and run malwarebytes full scan
If both are negative

Make a system restore from before the problem.
