T470 Power Bridge & Boot Hang Issue

Q: T470 Power Bridge & Boot Hang Issue

Received a new T470 a couple of weeks ago, but having issues when running off battery (internal + 3 cell): 1. Power Bridge failure: sometimes if I unplug machine and run off batteries, then remove the external battery, the machine shuts off immediately rather than switching to the internal battery. This occurs 1/2 or 1/3 of the time. 2. When booting machine (if machine is unplugged, running on battery): sometimes it hangs indefinitely at Lenovo splash screen (i.e. with endlessly spinning icon). Only way out is to reset machine by punching reset button on the back. (Note: #2 occurs always after #1 occurs, and 1/2 or 1/3 of the time on a regular reboot). 3. However: boot hang never occurs if booting while machine is plugged in OR if external battery is removed (i.e. running with the internal battery only). Boot hang only occurs if booting off batteries and external battery is installed. I called Tech Support, they sent a new internal battery, but that makes no difference. They also said it might be a faulty system board, but I ran full Lenovo HW diagnostics and all tests passed successfully including mother board test. Also tried a complete factory reset (Windows 10 x64), loaded all latest updates & drivers incl. latet BIOS (1.30), which I reset to default values (F9). Problem still persists. Anybody else experiencing these issues?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hoping this problem will be noticed by more people, the original post on this issue came from:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/T470-Linux-Power-Bridge-wrong-discharge-order/td-p/365...https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/63odjr/t470_battery_order_question_internal_discharges/ Brief description: same problem with OS including Win 10, Ubuntu 16.04, Gentoo etc. The internal battery always gets discharged first regardless its remaining power, which is generally harmless but seems not so good for the internal battery life. With my own T470 machine, updated with the latest 1.29 BIOS, this problem remains. According to searching results online, this little bug came with early versions of X's and T' including T460. PS: this issue had been successfully fixed with T460 via BIOS update 1.26, hoping it would be fixed with T470 sooner or later. Best regards.

Hello,

I have an ASUS M51V which has boot issues. When it boots it takes around 5 minutes to load and then enters a system recovery telling me to select my Windows Vista drivers.

During the boot it hangs on 'Auto-detecting AHCI Port 1..'

What would be on port one? The CD drive?

OS: Windows Vista
ASUS laptop, boots fine all other times, just started occuring

Any ideas? I'm fairly lost.

A:Boot Issue: AHCI Port 1 Hang?

its a bios issue not the operating system so to start with has bios reset? did you flash bios?

suggest entering bios usually press delete on start up or it will flash up for a second on boot like press f2 to enter set up, anyhow when in bios look for the port 1 which very likely is the hard drive, usually a feature is there to auto detect the drives so if so the try that, re boot if no good back to bios again to go to option set fail safe defaults re boot if that no good back again to other defaukts like optimised defaults, if all that does not work then possible isssue with the restore method on your lappy>? does it have a partition with an image on it?

Hi there, I have a toshiba A75 laptop that does not boot when on ac power without a battery beyond bios. It shows the splash screen but then dies on normal boot.

When I have the battery in and the unit is powered off It does charge the battery.
When the battery is fully charged, it will run and boot into windows but does not recognize the ac power at all. It just drains the battery, then when the battery is at 0 it shuts off and this is while connected to AC power and the LED see's the AC power.

When on AC power I can boot into bios and it will sit there for days without a battery, but when I try to get to the OS it just shuts down. I have replaced the mobo twice. I have replaced the hard drive as well. The odd part is that with the hard drive out of the laptop, I can get the laptop to run with out any power failures. It just recycles the media device failure message but does not crash.

I have tested the power supply on other laptops and it seems to work just fine.

Any one have any ideas?

A:Toshiba Satellite A75 boot/power issue with AC power

Since you have replaced the system board twice, this probably does not apply to you... but we have seen a number of Toshibas with the same or similar motherboard where the power jack on the board became loose or disconnected. A new jack had to be obtained and soldered back into position.
If you bought used boards or refurbished boards, this difficult jack problem could have been the cause. It requires a special cold solder technique and is awkward to access, but when done properly by an experienced tech, it can save a laptop.
There are several Dell Inspirons and Sony laptops with the similar problem.
We have seen costs in a shop as high as $160 for this repair... but the part is only $6.00 so I don't know how they justify the high cost.

Hello,I have a T470s that will not power up. I have had the laptop for 6+ months and it was working Friday with out any issues. I come in on Monday and go to power it on and all i get is a bunch of tones/sounds out of it. If i hit the FN key it will make a different set of sounds when then when i power it up. I have tried the reset button on the bottom of the laptop, which has not helped. It currently is running Windows . Any help would be appreciated.  UPDATE: I did further research on this and the error code is a 0001 and it is showing as a System Board Error.

Hi,I have Thinkpad T470 I've been using for 1.5 years. I installed new SSD a year ago and didn't have any issues. Today I tried to install one more memory into an empty slot. I disabled internal battery in BIOS, turned it off, dissembled and put a new memory in. But after that the laptop doesn't start up. Power green button doesn't blink. Tried to remove that added memory - no luck. Tried to reset CMOS - no luck. What else can I do? I think it's still under warranty but I'd like to try everything myself before that. No sure how fast support is in Lenovo though. Thanks

hello there,

I have got a strange problem since i run seven 64 bit Rc ( didn't tried older version nor Rtm ). I think a got the same Pb with Vista 64 bits, but a it was more random.

When i start my computer from scratch, it boots and when i got the 4 colors of the windows logo that go together, it hangs.
then i reboot the comp , i got the message to run the troobleshooter or start windows manually.
I choose the second option, it boots normaly.

I dont have this problem if i put on standby , it wake up OK.
-------
If i boot With F8 , in safe mode , the computer hang on the ClassPNP.sys.
-------
So googled a bit, it seems to be a trouble caused by windows having pb with handling APIC or AHCI.

I dont know what to change .... moreover i dont use the integrated SATA. i use a 3 ware raid card ( see my profil ) . So ACHI is not pb ?

Some one has already got this bug ?

So I just recieved my T470 today, and I eagerly wanted to at least boot it up, but much to my surprise, when I plugged the cable in, I recieved no indication that it was plugged in or charging whatsoever. No green light anywhere, no heat, no nothing. I've tried various outlets, a different cord for the brick to the outlet itself, I checked out the battery on the inside and out to make sure it was all connected, etc. To say it's disatisfying is an understatement. Unless I can quickly get a cable before classes start (in one week), planning on a full refund because this is beyond disappointing to not be able to even using the dang thing.Edit: I have no proof it could be the power brick either, considering since there's no real way I could tell whether it's something with the motherboard or something like that.Edit 2: Tried another Thinkpad's power cord and brick, didn't charge or even show an indicator that it was charging (no green lights). Probably just gonna RMA it and hope for the best.

I bought a Lenovo T470 a couple years back with Win 10 for school and its been working great with absolutley no problems. Then last night i get home from work and go on to do school work and a message pops up saying battery not charging. It has the icon showing it recognizes that the charger is plugged in. Also the light on the lenovo logo is blinking 3 times red and repeating. When i unplug the charger it stops blinking. So I thought it was the charger, got out my multimeter and check it and it reads normal on both sides of the charger. Then I thought i needed a new battery but it wont even stay powered on with the power cord plugged in. So now it is dead and even with the charger plugged in will not turn on. Not even the power button light will illuminate. This laptop has been great to me and this happened out of the blue im hoping there is a way to fix this problem. And I also tried taking battery, unplugging it, hold power button for a reset. Nothing changed. Anybody have any ideas?

The bottom of the laptop wasn't hot either, neither was the surface it was on.I did a BIOS update (was already up to date as far as I know) and a power management update.Problem however still persists. It start immediately when the laptop is switched on (before windows loads). I don't know what to do. Hi everyone,
I've just had an issue with my PC where i left it a while as i got engrossed in the TV, came back and monitor was in standby mode as you would expect, i moved the mouse around and nothing, it had all frozen. It's done this before and after resetting it's been fine, this time however it was failing to initialise any peripherals and the monitor. The fans were not kicking in properly and the red light was flashing in a particular rhythm. I know the mouse and keyboard werent initiliased as they both light up when on and the lights hadn't come on.

I tried switching it off completely, switched back on and same again, so i tried unplugging at the wall and unplugged the keyboard and mouse for good measure, still the same. I left it about half hour switched off at the wall and switched it back on. This time it ran and gave me a POST error stating that boot had failed and to check my settings in the BIOS. I did so, everything looked fine, so i continued. When prompted i selected start windows normally, and it booted fine, just perhaps a little slower than normal.

I have power going to the mobo, there is a green light showing that the board is hot. I ended up replacing the mobo on it but am still having the issue. I am thinking that maybe it's the power switch. Is there any other piece of hardware, besides the power supply, that would prevent the mobo from turning on?

1. The power button light did not come on (normally it glows blue).
2. The CPU fan did come on
3. There were some familiar clicks (perhaps the hard drive starting?) but then only the CPU fan appeared to be working.
4. Nothing appeared on the monitor.
5. No power to the keyboard (no caps lock or num lock LEDs)
6. CPU fan continued to operate.

I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Hello. I've been trying to change boot order in the lenovo thinkpad t470 but from the bios start-up utility, this boot order has been presented as inaccessible and is inactive. The cursor is inactive here. I have not been able to change the UEFI to both UEFI and Legacy. I have tried unchecking the safe boot from the system configuration in the light that safe boot was similar to secure boot to no avail. Still after doing this, secure boot from the bios start-up showed that secure boot was still on. I am trying to install Ubuntu 18.04 anyways. If anyone has a solution to the first issues or generally how to install Ubuntu in the thinkpad t470, please feel free to assist. Thanks.

So I buy a new psu (another 800 watt). I unplug all but bare essentials on board. same issue. I then take out the 8 pin adapter (so only the 24 pin is connected) and leds remains on and boot up starts (yipee). I then put the 8 pin in again and it fails in the same manner as before.

Hi,

Ive been having an issue with my PC for a while now and i thought id finally try to get some help

Basically whenever I Hibernate, Pull the plug or hold down power button or Sleep
(pretty much anything that is not a windows shut down)
My PC will not boot up again properly after the forced shutdown or hibernate, my PC will turn on but I will get no lights on mouse keyboard and for some reason every other fan apart the front one will come on.

When I hibernate/sleep my PC will go into that state straight away (no power to mouse etc..) causing me to force shutdown.

When this issue occurs i can leave the computer off for about an hour or so (completely off/unplugged) and it will start to boot normally again.

If anyone could help with this issue that would be great.

Thanks

Hi, I read this blog post regarding Power Bridge.  I have the X250 with an internal 3-cell battery and an external 6-cell battery.  Windows 10 recognises both batteries.  The Lenovo Settings application recognises both batteries as well and indicates that both are in good condition.  When I take out the external battery, the laptop switches off.  The internal battery definitely works, because I tried the laptop on the internal battery only.  The thing is that one of the battery latches (not the one where you have to keep holding it to release the battery but the other one) broke, so the battery is not secured correctly.  It still works and mostly stays in but sometimes some movement might disloge the battery just slightly from the connector which results in the laptop switching off.  So if power bridge worked, this would't be a problem I think. Updated the bios to version 1.17 from 1.15. Thanks The X250 Specs:Core i7-5600U1920x1080 display8GB RAM256GB SSD

I have looked high and low and I cannot definitively find whether or not my late 2016 T460p does/does not or is/is not supposed to have an internal battery. I bought this laptop in late December 2016, and I am rather confident I read somewhere it is supposed to have it. However, everytime I remove the swappable battery, the laptop shuts off, and I have been receiving awful battery life. Anyway, with no external battery put in, the laptop thinks there is no battery; clearly my machine does not have an internal battery (or at least not one that works). I'm simply wondering if I am even supposed to have one and if so how I can get it fixed. Thanks!

I have a T470 laptop.  2 fingers scrolling using the touchpad is very erratic.  Sometime the scrolling seems to work very well.  All of a sudden, it will be very unresponsive.  Sometime, it thought 2 finger scrolling as right clicking or highlighting text.  I tried all the different sensitivity levels, turn off pinch to zoom and disable the trackpoint.  Nothing works.  This is very frustrating. Also, the touchpad just seems like it does not handle very fine pointer movement.  Most other laptop I used, you can move the pointer with a little bit of finger movement to place the pointer precisely where you want.  The pointer just does not do anything on the T470.  This is especially true the when you try to move the pointer up or to the left (right handed user).  Could be a texture thing. I have the latest synaptics driver 19.3.4.99.  Is this the norm for thinkpad or this could be a hardware or driver issue?  Coming from a Microsoft surface pro 4, this touchpad is basically unusable even for the most basic task.  I would not have thought this could still be a problem for a 2017 laptop that cost $1200 and up.

A:Recommended power adapter/charger for Lenovo Thinkpad T470

I would buy the USB-C, thinking if or when I replace the laptop, the USB-C charger is more likely to work as a spare.  As far as wattage, the 45W will be lighter, but 65W may charge some devices faster and is more likely to be compatible with any replacement.  (I am not suggesting that you are going to replace the laptop soon, but things happen and situations change.)

Including BIOS, Intel Management Engine, etc. And then surprise! From the OFF state, when I press Power ON button, the system waits with a black screen for about 1 minute before starting the boot sequence. Probably one of the updates did it again. I say this, because I was among the first people having discovered last year that an update to Intel Management Engine causes boot problems; cf. this thread. Any of you guys facing similar issues? I end my message with the classic "being disappointed" stuff. I had an incredible amount of issues w/ my P52. And browsing through the forums shows me that P53 seems to have most of them and maybe even more. Why did Lenovo + Intel mess at this point this product line. Why? Best regards,Cristian.

The only thing it shows is black background with blinking ( - ) symbol and after while it returns back to the error above.

Yes, I bought this laptop without OS (it has MS-DOS I guess).

But I managed to boot Windows Installation disc from USB drive. Everything's going fine, it loads up the insta... Read more

From the UK Lenovo's system has let me order the above battery twice, then a few days later sent me an email cancelling the order.  Now the item has vanished from the website, as if it never existed. I'm annoyed with myself that I chose the flush fitting 61 3cell battery when ordering the machine, adding the 61++ as an additional item.   One of the reasons for choosing T470 was its long run-time on battery. Anyine know what's going on with this battery?  I've asked Lenovo without anything more illuminating that "it's not available".  Yet it's on Lenovo's US website - delivery 1-3 days!

Hello,  I purchased this T470 less than a year ago, and yesterday I encountered a bizarre keyboard and mouse issue. First thing that happened was my keyboard stopped working. And then it began beeping continuously. I suspected sticky keys, but it was disabled. I restarted the laptop to be greeted with more beeping and the ease of access narrator informing me of how to make my computer easier to use. At this point I attached an external keyboard and it worked fine. I had work to do, so I just disabled the speakers and went about my day. I could find no solutions online so last night I reset the computer to factory settings. This solved my beeping issue, and the narrator, and now the letters on the keyboard are functioning, but most other keys such as Enter, backspace, and most of the function keys are, ironically, non-functioning. And let out a single beep when pressed. Furthermore my mouse pointer has gone up in size, and while I can make it bigger it will not return to the default size even when selected from the Ease of Access menu.  At this point I have removed the keyboard, and am assuming something may have gotten spilled on it, or it shorted somehow. I have no explanation for the ease of access narrator, or the pointer size issue, unless some combination of keys were resulting in these being changed.  At this point it seems I'll need to purchase a new keyboard, but I figured I'd check here before that in case anyone had an alternative solut... PC1;
I have a Windows 7 desktop, the cable modem/router (superhub) feeds directly into this desktop.
PC2;
In another room, I have a Windows 7 desktop, used as a media centre, this also has its own lan connection to a separate netgear router (that doesn't have internet), the only reason it has its own modem is so i can use WOL, a NAS DNS 323 with 4TB of bluray movie feeds into this modem also.

I have a wifi dongle, i plugged it into PC2, and connected it to the superhub, the problem is, i either get access to internet and not the nas server, or the other way round. I have even tried bridging the LAN and WIFI, which works, but still only get access to either the web or the server.

What am i doing wrong?

Hi all,

I've been doing some research on my new build and started looking into power phases. After reading some articles, it seems like the less power phases you have, the more susceptible your motherboard is to failing, especially if you're overclocking. Plus you also have to worry about components on your motherboard overheating such as the mosfets. Is all of this something I should be worried about?

The motherboard I want to get has 8+2 power phases (Asrock P67 Extreme4 Gen3). So if I plan on overclocking, should I step up to a 12+2 or 16+2 motherboard or will I be safe at 8+2?

Thanks in advance

A:New Sandy Bridge build - power phases

The ASrock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 is an excellent board. It overclocks impressively. People have managed to hit the 5 GHz mark at around 1.45V with a good aftermarket HSF.

More power phases do not guarantee better performance. Generally, more phases should make for smoother voltage output, but it is only one of several factors in the design of the CPU voltage regulator.

My new X260 uses the internal battery before the external, hot-swappable battery. How can I change this? I'm on the newest BIOS (1.19?) and Ubuntu Xenial.

Hi, I have a thinkpad L430 with windows 10 installed. I have a black screen after the thinkpad logo appears. I have tried various workarounds posted on this site with no such luck.  I?m wondering if I need to install this update posted here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-L-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-... Although I?m already using version 2.74 with the last update done in June 2018. I?m not very computer savvy and if I do need to update it, I do not have a CD drive so can I save the download on a USB and then install on my computer?  TIA

I've spent hours researching this annoying feature. If I leave the machine in sleep/hibernate state for more than about an hour and then open the lid, only the Lenovo logo is shown. CAD combo restarts but again only the logo is shown. I need to press the power button once, wait a few seconds then press the power button again. Then the laptop starts normally. The attached file shows my power settings. I appreciate any assistance. I have this problem whether I have my Wacom Pro S tablet attached or not. The laptop is brand new.

So I have a network bridge set between my Wireless connection and a LAN Connection that runs into my xbox but randomly my internet will just stop working, and the only way it seems to fix it is if I disable and then re enable the network bridge manually on my computer. I was wondering if I could create a batch file that would do this automatically once the internet dropped out? It makes the internet stop working on my computer as well. Thank you.

Hello Everyone,My sister asked me to help her increase the available storage space on her T470. SInce I help manage  fleet over 500 T470s at work I said sure it can't be that hard. But now I'm stumped. We ordered a Crucial CT2000MX500SSD1(Z)We also ordered FRU 00UR495 since the machine was origonally shipped with a 256 NVMe drive.I cloned the drive using "Acronis TrueImage for Crucial" which is something I've done in the past, but it didn't work. When I boot the machine gets stuck at the "Press Enter to Interrupt Startup" screen. I was able to unplug the drive, get into the BIOS, and switch the boot setting from Quick to Diagnostic, and then I could see that the sreen would freeze on a single "_" character.Figuring that something was wrong with the drive structure, I connected it back to another machine and used DISKPART to remove all partitions. Now the machine will boot to the boot device selection screen. The boot screen will identify a USB drive plugged in, but not the SSD. If I go into the Diganostics utility it does not let me run diagnostics on any drive, so I'm reasonably sure that It's not being detecred.I have updated the computer bios to version 1.59. It was on version 1.44 before. Safe Boot is off.Converting the disk to MBR has allowed the machine to boot temporarily, but the Windows 10 installer on a bootable USB stick won't install to MBR disks.Switching it back to GPT causes the computer to freeze at "_" again. If anyone has any suggestions I'm all open. I'm... Read more
