Accessing xp share drops both wifi connections

Q: Accessing xp share drops both wifi connections

Here's a weird one for you experts.

Background: I have an XP pro x32 machine on wireless with shared folders, a 7 Ultimate x64 machine (fresh install) on wireless, and Linksys Wireless/wired router (I'll get the model number later, can't remember). I've had the shares on xp set up for a long time and never had an issue with them on XP or Vista machines. The two machines are on the same router, same subnet, same workgroup (home), individually assigned IPs, and can access the outside fine. 7 does not have a "share group" set up.

Issue: Whenever I access a shared folder from the 7 machine it connects fine until I start to transfer files. It will make it anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes before the wireless connections on both machines are dropped. The connection problems only happen when copying shared files; I can browse shared folders or internet all I want.

I've been through the How-to-share tutorials but no change. Any ideas what to try next?

Side note that may or may not have any bearing: I had been having an issue where the wireless adapter didn't exist (device manager or anywhere else) after coming back from sleep. That required me to reboot to see it again. I fixed it by disabling the save power feature on the driver and disabling sleep mode.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Accessing xp share drops both wifi connections

might be worth a look at a small program called "Net Stumbler" it will show if there is another network using the same frequency and channel number
In the share make sure "everyone' is in the share group and your permissions are set up on each share

I'm working on a fairly new HP laptop. When connecting to a network with the LAN card everything works fine except windows update. While trying to search for updates it eventually says it cannot find the page.

When using the wirelessLAN card the connection drops after a couple of minutes and says it failed to connect to a server that is appearently named after the computer's owner.

Both will allow me to browse the internet, if only for a while.
All is set to auto detect and I cannot find anything the says why its trying to connect to that server or why it drops connection.
Also, the wireless card is had trouble in the past with accepting a lease from new routers.

Some information on the wireless card as to make and model would be good.

The wireless card where is the other wireless connection that it is trying to connect to?

Also have you done a repair-installation of windows lately?

You can connect to the printer fine but as soon as you restart or shut down the 2000 machine it drops the printer when it comes back up. The account on the 2000 is a power user but I also tried it from Admin and samething. The firewall on the XP machine is turned off.
Thanks for any help/info.

I have ran online virus scanners, adaware and spybot, cwshredder, Winfix. I have even tryed to reinstall Windows ME (not a reformat install). about 1 to 2 times a day I have to power cycle my WRT54G v6 router because it randomly drops both the LAN and Internet connection on the wireless laptop and wired desktop. when this happens, I can't even access the router admin page (192.168.1.1) via the wired desktop.

i've tried playing with different wireless settings, but nothing helped. I tried with both the desktop and router's MAC address, but the problem exists either way. i've factory/hard reset and re-flashed the firmware, but it didn't help.

the ISP is Comcast (Seattle, WA) and it's a cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB5100) and the router has the latest firmware (1.02.0)

it's definitely the router that's the problem, because the router seems to disappear

any ideas on why it's doing this and how to possibly resolve it?

TIA

Hi

I am getting mad... any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a laptop acer 4810TZ with an intel 1000 BGN wireless adaptor. Every now & then, specially when I am using VNCViewer to connect to a remote host, the connection hangs, and the session is interrupted. Immediately after, it can be restarteD.

When I connect via wire ethernet, or via a USB wireless stick (RT73), no issues. The remote host is connected to my lan (via the ISP router).

I've tried quite some tweaks (no dhcp, no ipv6, google dns, security type from wpa tkip to aes, etc...), no joy. I've even installed in dual boot ubuntu, no issues with the adater then.

Acer does not supply any newer drivers....

A ping -t shows that once in a while, the connection goes bad, then restarts

Any clues as how to diagnose this ?

Rgds,

J.

A:Wireless connections drops a few seconds every now & then

Some possible causes are large distances between the laptop and the router, multiple walls and other obstacles between the laptop and the router, and other devices(cordless phone, microwave oven, etc.) using the same frequency(2.4 GHz) as the router.
The 1st 2 may be solved by installing an external antenna on the router(assuming it will accept an antenna).
The 3rd may be solved by switching the router to a 5 GHz frequency(assuming it has this capability).

I just purchased a D-Link DGE 530T PCI adapter tonight. It is listed as W-7 compatible. It did not work and there is no driver available according to the phone help. Any help would be appreciated before I chuck W-7 to go back to XP-64.

A:Random Drops of Wired connections

Post the harware id strings. Right click in device manager, on the adapter. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results to here. That's how we can find a driver if it does indeed exist.

My trusty linksys wireless router got fried in a recent electrical storm. While waiting for a new d-link "airplus extreme g" to come in, I've been relying on old wireless routers lying around, like a netgear WGR614 v6.

I connect to the router via ethernet because a) I have a desktop and b) no wireless router I've ever used has allowed me to work in sshell without dropping me after a few minutes. I do a lot of work in shell and after the linksys fried, if I wanted to run a program that takes a while, I had to take everyone off the wireless router and connect to the modem directly. I was hoping my new d-link would solve the problem, but so far things are actually much worse.

I'm still connected via ethernet only but now I get "a network cable connection is unplugged" about every 15 seconds (or less). Again, I never had this problem with the linksys but the other modems I've tried since have been pretty problematic, dropping all the ethernet-connected computers on the network. Any ideas?
EDITED: updated the firmware, that seems to help ... please ignore this message until I know I'm stuck again! I would delete it, but that doesn't seem possible.

Ok so I have had this problem for months, I really have tried everything I can think of but just don't get what is happening.

Set Up:
Speedtouch ADSL modem - DHCP server - 192.168.1.254
Linksys wireless router - connected to modem - 192.168.1.253
A PC is conncted to the wireless router via ethernet, and I use a laptop via wireless.
The Problem:

Mostly the laptop works fine over wireless. But whenever I do something over the local network (view files on the pc, try to back up laptop files to the pc, or even access laptop files from the pc) the laptop's wireless connection drops out within 30 sec. By 'drop out', the laptop still says it is connected but has no internet access. I cannot access the wireless router by IP address when this happens either.

The worst bit is that when I disconnect and try reconnecting to the wireless router, I can't - the only solution is to restart the
ADSL modem (rebooting the linksys router doesn't help..). Also, I do get disconnected and can't reconnect very occasionally when I'm just using internet (once a day max).

What I've Tried:
ipconfig/all - didn't see anything unusual
changing DHCP to the wireless router. Now this was weird - I couldn't get DNS working when I did this. Tried using openDNS but no luck, and when I decided to copy the modem's DNS settings, they were all set as 0.0.0.0. (???)
tried hours of googling for the problem, turning off all antivirus programs etc, lots... Read more

A:Wireless drops out when accessing local files on the network

my initaill reaction was to see if there are firmware updates avaible for the modem/router/ and a driver update for the pc network adapter
BUT when you said
When the laptop is close to the wireless router (i.e 5 bars instead of the normal 3), the problem doesn't seem to occur. Click to expand...

wasnt so sure - BUT it would be worth looking at the firmware and see what updates are available
If we could have makes and exact models of all devices - we should be able to post the information here

This only ever happens on wireless - the ethernet connected PC still works fine on the internet when the "drop out" occurs
correct ?

Lets try a few things -
When its working normally - make a note of all the status light on the router and modem
then when it "drops out" check those light and post any difference here

again when its working correclty lets see an ipconfig /all and various ping tests and post results here- see below
Now when it drops out repeat all the tests and save to something like notepad and when you have internet access post back here - make sure we know which is which

Also lets see what the wireless landscape looks like - post and image of the xirrus wireless tool - see details below
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access... Read more

I have been trying for some time to accomplish the title result. I'm not techie enough to do it.

What I want is to be able to use a Tablet to read in the rear of my home (which is out of range for incoming wifi signal.)

If I can set up the computer to do this, I will cable connect to a router in that area.
I have two computers and could use either.

1.a PC running XP (should update to windows 8.1, but have never bothered to do that, since XP works just fine. (I had this computer sharing to the router, when I had DSL internet connection, using Windows wizard to set it up) Couldn't get it to work when I switched to WIFI internet access) I could switch to win 7 or 8.1 if that would help.

2. a Lap Top running WIN 8.1,

Any help is appreciated.

A:Internet access via WIFI and share WIFI via second router

Due to the age of XP this is not the best option for what you want to do

Either windows 7 or 8.1 have access to Internet connection sharing (ICS) built in

To use ICS you need at least two connections to the local LAN, these can be any mix of wifi or Ethernet.

As you have a laptop you likely already have a system to use for this

There is a tutorial explaining the basics ... and more on this site

Check it out and post back if you have any issues

I have a new Windows 10 Home computer and I've selected a folder and shared it. I've added Everyone to the Share Permissions list with Full Control.

I've selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the Advance Sharing Center.

When I try to access the share with a Windows 7 laptop in the home it connects right away without a prompt for credentials. When I try to access the share from another Windows 10 device (Surface) there is a prompt for credentials and I am unable to access the shared folder. There are no common account names between machines on my home network.

On the Windows 10 machine which is trying to connect I have run Net use * /DELETE and removed all Windows Credentials using the Credentials Manager then rebooted both machines a few times. Still though the Windows 7 machine can access the share with no credentials and the Windows 10 machine can't access it at all.

My goal is to get the share working for the Windows 10 machine as it works for the Windows 7. Full access, no prompt for credentials. I've workaround steps that will provide access so that type of information isn't needed.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and any help would be most appreciated.

A:Win 10 PC accessing a Win 10 Everyone share prompted for credentials

I've got this working although I'm not entirely certain as to why. The Windows 10 machine that was trying to connect had been logged on to with a Microsoft account which was created on purchase. I created a new local account on that machine and then tried accessing the share with complete success. I'm sure there is some kind of reason for this behavior but I am unable to provided it.

So we a share drive that is located on computer A. 5 other computers all share and access that folder. There are no restrictions on anybody. The 5th computer that I just set up is having problems though. When I connected to the network via wifi, I found the shared folder. I opened the share folder and was asked to enter the user name and password. (username and password from the computer the share drive is located on.) I typed it in, and now I can see everything on the share drive. However I am not able to create new files, open - edit - save any files, create new folders. I can't figure out what I am missing here, any advice?

One note I'll make, this new 5th computer was purchased from the UK. Everything else is from USA. Could there be any problems because of this?

Thanks.

What kind of router are you using?

You'll probably need to set up a static route on the router from the 192.168.1.x subnet to the 192.168.2.x subnet. From the Windows PC, can you ping anything on the 192.168.2.x network?

What I'd like to achieve is the automatic sending of a magic packet whenever I try to open any media on the server using my HTPC (mediaportal frontend running on Win7 Pro). I currently have it set up so that I can just run a batch file to send the packet before trying to access the media, however this means having to minimise MP and execute a batch file manually before going back into MP and opening the media. I'd like to automate this in some way, so that the batch file is automatically executed (or the packet send is initiated in some other way) whenever the system tries to access any files on the SAMBA share (mapped as a network drive).

I'm sure that it will be possible, but my brain really isn't engaging today...think that half bottle of Southern Comfort last night may have something to do with it, lol.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Marc

I'm working on setting up a VPN server on my home Windows 8 PC, and I'm *finally* able to log in, but once I've logged in I have no internet access. I've been all over the place trying to figure out how to share my ethernet adapter's internet with my VPN connection, and am mostly finding out how to do the opposite. Is this even possible?

I want to prevent users from accessing share folders after typing the IP Address and press Enter it should popup an error message not after the users be able to see all those shared folders and when they click on the shared folder it receive an error message like access denied.

So far I have set NTFS and Share folder permission but doesn't work for the URL bar with IP Address, however it works fine when users click on the shared folder.

Hi,

I have a laptop (with win 7 home premium) connected wirelessly to the router. I have a server connected (wired) with some shared folders on it.

Now, when I try to open the networkshare on my laptop (when I'm connected wireless to the network), it won't work 3/4 of the times I try. But to let it work, I just do a ping to the IP of the server and when I try again the networkshare will open. Very strange.

When I'm connected to the network with a wired connection, the networkshare will always open up directly.

Is something wrong with my wireless connection? I have an excellent signal and installed the latest drivers for the network card.

My network is setup as followed:

Wireless router -> switch (downstairs) -> switch (upstairs)
My laptop is wirelessly connected to the router. The server is connected to the switch that's upstairs.

Hope I explained it well.

Thanks,
Mathew

I asked this question recently, then realized I may have asked in the wrong forum. Here is my problem : trying to access folders shared on a win 7 machine from a win xp machine is causing windows explorer to crash. The issue is intermittent and I can't figure out at all what is causing it. So far I haven't gotten an answer from anyone that has helped resolve the problem. Please help, I'm getting frantically desperate to fix it at this point

Hello all,

Over the weekend it seems that one of my Windows 7 computers here where I work lost connectivity with our file server.

Workstation:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Pentium Dual Core
3GB RAM

Server:
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64
Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB RAM

It never had issues connecting with the share before now. Now every time I try to connect it to the share, it tells me that the password for the account is invalid. As the account for the workstation had no encrypted or protected files on the server, I just went and reset the password to make sure it hadnt gotten changed some how. This however did not fix the issue. The computer is able to access the internet and see that the server indeed exists on the network, but for what ever reason is not able to access the share any longer.

Any ideas?

Why is sharing so hard on windoze???

I have tried everything I could find to get this to work. Seems like renaming the user in 7 has caused the problem. Sharing works fine on a new user that I created but will not work on the renamed account. I even tried this

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistanetworking/thread/cc1d74af-f739-4070-84fb-86319d103cc9

with no joy.

I would like to keep all the settings in the non sharing renamed account. Can it be copied into a new account then deleted or fixed?

TIA

I have four systems; three are win7 and one is win2k. All of the win7 systems can see each other fine and all systems are in the same workgroup. Win2k has a shared drive and folders with permissions set to "Everyone"

I have put this key into the registry on my win7 system
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters DhcpNodeType value set to 1

I can always ping the win2k machine from a cmd prompt and get a good response. I can sometimes access the shared items however other times a get a box asking for a user/password. When I input what I know to be the pw, it says bad user name pw.

Here is what really perplexes me. When I logoff of the win7 machine and log right back on, I can access the win2k machine without any problem. This lasts for a while and then reverts to the login problem.

One other item. When I logoff of the win7 machine then log back in, the view of the win2k share is changed from "List" to tiles. I can change it back without problems however the next time I do this, it is back to tiles.

Hi all,

Got a bit of a weird issue here. I've owned my WAG54GX2 for about... 2 years maybe, and I've got no complaints all round. My usage hasnt changed nor any settings within this period.

However... Over the last week, for some reason the WiFi Connection gets destroyed. I've only seen it once at the point where the Wifi Light goes out (something i've never seen before) - but generally the 2 WiFi conencted PC's fail to keep the connection, they drop out, and fail to get an IP, and when they do manage to get 'on' the connection is terrible. In the mean time, I run wired on 2 boxes that have no noticeable issues at all. Its like the WiFi just gets totally jammed up.

I've tried my hardest to establish what has changed, what is new, whats different at night, and theres just nothing.

Turning off the router and back on seems to have no effect either.

I've attached some logs, I dont know what 99% of it means. But thought maybe someone here could shed some info by translating them.

the Anisdktool seems to be started a lot? normal?

and wns msg tcvd: no idea what thats all about?

ring full looks a bit "** alerting***" but no idea what this is telling me either.

This is super frustrating any insight would be great.

This is a very weird problem. Starting from three days ago my laptop's wifi capabilities dropped suddenly. I hadn't dropped it or installed anything that could have caused it. I could get no WiFi unless I was in the same room as the router. Meanwhile my phone could get WiFi same as before all around the house.

I tried a system restore, updating everything and things like that. Today I noticed that the WiFi icon would show two bars just as the lid is opened but quickly changes to no signal. I figured out that if I angle the lid below 45 degrees and just before the display turns off, I get great signal strength just as I used to!

Now it is very inconvenient to use the laptop like that which is why I am typing this from my phone. Can you guys help me please I really needed to fill out lots of forms from that machine. Thanks in advance.

My wifi driver disappears from my HP Envy laptop. The driver is a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adaptor. Prior to and after upgrading the operating system to Windws 10, the computer would not display the Qualcommm upon startup. Rather, the computer would not detect any wifi capaility and any troubleshooting information provided was to plug in a cable for internet. Searching for the Qualcomm doesn't help. For the last 4 startups the Qualcom has not reappeared. We ethen removed the Windows 10 operating system and reverted back to Windows 8.1, Th e qualcomm and wifi appeared briefly, but the computer froze and now, following 4 start-ups it does not reappear. In rder to post this question, I've had t plug the computer in. Please advise.

Hi

I Have had this problem since upgrading to windows 7 /64

When i type using keyboard for whatever reason the internet wifi drops. I am using a TP link unit. It is more apparent when i am typing emails in windows live mail.

Is this a problem that anyone has experienced. I have switched from wireless keyboard to wired. What actually happens is even offline the keyboard itself drops out, i start receiving a note/tone each time i press the keyboard buttons when it has dropped out. When online if the keyboard drops out the wireless drops with it.

I have to kick in the keyboard again by using the mouse to click the screen. The mouse also drops out when scrolling using the
wheel. again i have to click the screen to reinstate

It has dropped six times typing this note.

thanks

I assume there is a little USB connected radio ("dongle") that communicates with the wireless keyboard. When you switched keyboards did you also disconnect the "dongle"?

So yeah, silly me Installed windows 10 anniversary update (i could have chose not to) and now i keep getting disconnecting from my wifi every 2-10 mins. It was working perfectly before it. And I tried everything, believe me. Rolling back to previous build (this had to work :/), turning off power saving mode on my network adapter, reinstalling it, downloading new drivers from Asus website, I've also tried winsock reset, dns flush, ip config release etc. Also turning off my firewall, disabling realtek ethernet adapter, antivirus haven't helped me at all. And yeah I can access my internet with ethernet cable and other devices are working without problems. I also tried an external wifi adapter and had the same problem.
Funny thing is I can still access ipv6 websites after it gets disconnected, it has something to do with DNS. (Yes I also tried putting Google DNS servers). The only thing that I haven't tried is installing wifi drivers that I have on my asus disk that came with loptop (will do it later today)
If you're interested here's my network adapter: mediatek mt7630e
Help will be appreciated, thank you in advance.

My WIFI will just randomly drop, and has that yellow triangle. The internet will be slow, or sometimes no internet at all. It just randomly drops there is no specific times it turns off. I have tried a bunch of ways to fix it, and no luck. I have downgraded drivers and nothing works. I have updated drivers and nothing works. I did hear something about the Windows 10 update that messed up the internet, but I've had it updated and nothing is working. I appreciate the help. Thank you.

I recently purchased a LG Optimus P500h with Android 2.2. I have a problem with its wifi. At home I have Dlink router DIR-825. My laptop and desktop are working good on this network. But this phone keeps dropping the connection, and starts scaning again and again for no reason. The phone can see the wifi, and is able to connect to it, but drops it after a few seconds. In order to pinpoint the problem, I tried connecting my phone to the public library's wifi, and it worked.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hey guys in the last day or so, my Technicolor TG587n v3 modem's wifi disconnects and then restarts whenever I reboot my galaxy S4, wired internet stays connected but wifi turns off, any ideas?

A:Modem drops wifi

Okay. Who is your ISP. There has been known issues for that model. That is why most go with their own equipment for Internet. Too many issues with the all-in-one gateways.

You could just turn off the onboard wifi, and use a Wireless Access Point instead. I use the Engenius ECB-350 for my network. Never have had any issues with it. I can pick it up to 75' from my house.

Hey All, new to the forum, thanks for the replies in advance, and I'm sorry if I'm not explaining it in the correct terms.

My issue seems to be with my computer. Often, when I am connected to my WiFi router, my internet service, and subsequent connection to the network, drops inexplicably. My computer will claim it is no longer connected. When I attempt to reconnect, the computer claims it cannot. The troubleshooter also cannot find an issue. All the while, other devices and computers on the network will be perfectly connected without interruption. The only way to fix this is to actually go to the router, reset it, and wait. This can happen within 5 minute of being reset, 20 minute, an hour, or sometimes, days go by without it being an issue. No rhyme. No reason. (That I can find)

Other times, my network, will just...slow down. I'll see the connection drop from full signal to 4 bars. If I catch it then, I can run the troubleshooter and everything will be restored (although the message the computer returns is that there was no problem found). Either this, or if I turn off my wifi, then turn it back on, reconnect to my network, boom, speed restored!

This is driving me insane. I can't seem to fix it. Any help is appreciated, as I am quite tired of having to march across the room 3-6 times every day to reset this. Thanks!

Hey,Ever since I've had my laptop (6 months) I've had this persistent problem with wifi connectivity. I rarely use my laptop but more recently have come into need of it, so it is getting increasingly frustrating. What happens is, every two minutes the wifi drops. I have to drop into network settings and disable the dual processor I think it is (AC 165)?? Anyway, I was hoping I can be given some guidance as I am on the verge of returning and getting money back for a faulty product. Seems this is a common problem and not sure if I ever trust myself to go with HP again.
