Terminal Server Manager - Remote Control Option

Q: Terminal Server Manager - Remote Control Option

I connect to my terminal server, no problems at all (Windows 2003 (SP2) Server platform).

I then use Terminal Services Manager 5.2 to connect to my users devices using the "Remote Control" option from within.

My issue is that over the last week or so (this feature has been running with no problems for 2 years +) this feature returns the following error:

"Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again".

Then proceeds to disconnect me from the terminal server entirely.

Can anyone advise why this has suddenly started occuring and more importantly, advise a solutiion.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm having a similar probelm.

I'm running XP SP3 and can remote into my TS fine (Server 2003) but I get the same message when I then try to remote control a user using the Terminal Services Manager on the TS.

The thing is I think this has only started since I updated my Remote Desktop Connection to version 7. (May show up as KB969084) I'm not able to un-install KB969084 though as it doesn't show up in my list of installed updates in the Add Remove Programs.

Do you know if you're PC was updated with the RDC v7 or have you found a fix for your issue?
Update: I've found this
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rdesktop/+bug/494948

which describes my problem exactly. Doesn't seem however to be a fix listed there.

I have this application where I want a new hire to fill out an Access record for their application. I want the HR receptionist to be able to control that new hire's use of the computer. I thought I would have the NH (New Hire) go to a computer logged into the terminal server and enter their data. I would have the receptionist create the record and get them started and the rest would just be a fill in the blanks and click the next button. A former network administrator set me up so when I click on the Remote Control to a terminal server user, I can connect without them having to give me permission. I want to set the receptionist up the same way, but I don't neccesarily want to give her admin rights. is that possible?

When we try to use RDP to connect to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition Terminal Server we get a message that pops up saying One Note cannot open a file we selected to print out. We never setup One Note to do this and have no idea what file it is referring to .
It appears that it is the One Note on our Windows 7 Pro remote computers that is creating the message windows not on the Terminal Server.
It happens from multiple remote Windows 7 Pro computers. It does not happen from these same computers when we RDP to other Terminal Servers.
Also we never use One Note on any computers.
Any ideas what to look for on the problem TS?

I have a Windows 2003 domain with 2 sites and planning a third with site configuration to make the users go to their local windows DC for authentication etc.

I was wondering how I should do the Terminal Server Licensing server since this if there is only one in the Enterprise or Domain (same thing here) then how will people in the remote offices get their licenses. Over slow WAN links?

Is it possible to have a terminal server licensing server at each location, so if the vpn going down as sometimes happens then they are still able to use their local Terminal Servers (ie the local Terminal Servers can still contact the Licensing server needed to run the remote sessions because it is local)?
Has anybody had to face this issue? What have you done about it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

We have about 8 computers on a LAN that conncet to a local netowrk printer. We can all each individually carry that printer to our terminal server (using remote desktop), so we can each print from the server to our local machine.

We purchased two new computers which came installed with Vista, insuring all local resources are enabled within Remote Desktop, the printer does not show on the Windows 2003 Terminal Server as it does on all the XP machines.

Printing from the Vista machines to the printer works fine, although we do have some issues locally printing different types of PDF's (sometimes changing "Document Type" to "Document" in our print driver prints the PDF, most times it does not).

Our local network pritner is a Konica-Minolta C352.

Thanks again,
Justin

A:typeperf command with remote server option fails

Hi Sam,

I would like to know what your Windows 7 model is. 32-bit or 64-bit? What is your remote server model?

If you are running 32-bit OS on locally, please make sure your remote server is the same model. If your remote server is 64-bit OS, you may need 64-bit version of
typerperf at C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Also, try the double '%%', for example:

typeperf "\\<remote-IP>\Process(*)\%%
Processor Time" -sc 1

One site is running SERVER 2003
Few other site run WINXP Pro(have full admin privileges to all )
I have been trying for the last few days to no avail
I can log on and control the server PC on local network using it’s local IP (192.168.x.x) using Windows remote control facility. NO PROB
Now if I go to another site ,(we are going to call it WORKING SITE) try to log onto my home network NO GO.
Try VNC same NO GO
Go back home and try to log on to WORKING SITE , after setting all the correct bits, again NO GO
Have run “netstat” and port 3389 is listening
Am I missing something?

I would like to serve the database for BCM 2010 from an internet accessible server. This server also happens to be on my LAN.

First, I installed and configured the database on the server.

Using the server's LAN name and LAN IP:
I was able to successfully connect to the database when I used sqlcmd from my client machine. I was also able to successfully connect to the database when I used the BCM connection wizard from my client machine.

Using the server's internet name and internet IP:
I was able to successfully connect to the database when I used sqlcmd from my client machine. I was unable to connect to the database when I used the BCM connection wizard from my client machine. The error message is this, "The computer, <name>, is not available or does not contain any shared Business Contact Manager databases..." Using a packet sniffer on the server, I observed that no requests showed up on port 5356 when the connection request came from BCM.

These tests strongly suggest that
The firewall is properly configured
The database is properly configured
The BCM database is properly shared
So, my question is this: Is there some way to twist BCM's 'arm' such that it will connect to a database server not located on the same LAN as the client?

Thank you!

I have a Toshiba Desktop on our 3-computer LAN that I bought used 2 or 3 years ago that has 2000 Server OS. No major problems until last Friday when my wife was online cleaning the webmail on her insightbb.com email account and her computer locked up. I did not know she had some earlier incidents of locking up in either Outlook or the accounting software on this PC. Previously she had a Win98 OS and was used to rebooting if there was a lockup. so this is what she did 2 or 3 times before letting me know there was a problem.

I had been getting error message: Service Control Manger At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use event manager to examine the event log details. I found the error was 7000, looked on the Microsoft tech support under Q316500 and used the Rms.inf file to install the Removable Storage Manger in the WINNT\system32 folder.

However the machine will NOT startup normally. After restarting from safe mode it reaches LOG ON TO WINDOWS where you enter user and password.

When she tries to just open the Excel program, she gets this error:

We're using Windows 2000 Server in Terminal Server/Application Server mode. the Clients are Win98 boxes. I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

2. Also, I know that Windows XP has an RDP client, I've used before on many occasions, but what about all the Windows 2000 clients that I still have out there. What should I do for them to access the new Terminal Servers?

A:Terminal Server license server(s)? RDP client for Windows2K?

I'm not 100% sure on #1, but I believe that the TS licensing becomes integrated into the AD, so if one DC goes down, the other one will be able to check licensing. On another note, if you are using the TS for administration only, I don't believe you needs the TS Licensing to be installed.

For #2, you can download the latest version of the RDP client from MS's website. It should also be available through Windows Updates, although I think Win2K isn't supported any longer, other than Critical Updates.

Here's my situation:

I've got a decent setup (Vista, 6GB RAM) that I use for web browsing, browser games, and the occasional MMO. My wife has something that works for her for browsing / browser games (Win7, 2GB RAM). Naturally, the kids are always on my machine, and whoever comes second is fine with Mom's. BUT, sometimes that ol' butthead Daddy wants to use his own computer! No problem - Junior got a netbook for Christmas. OH, but... it's not what he's used to... actually, it's slow enough in comparison (Win7, 1G RAM) that he gets frustrated and wanders off.

Now, my grand idea:

I know Windows has such a thing as remote access - Verizon used it to help me out once. And I've heard old stories of sharing access to the only good computer on campus through "remote terminals." Each user connected to their own, isolated, centrally-hosted session, right? Hey, Windows has that "user accounts" feature I never use! I've been messing around with network file access settings before and noticed the option to set up specific access privileges for specific accounts across the network. Hmm... wonder if I could serve a desktop session that way?

A little research reveals:

Hosting this does not appear to be a native capability of my OS - the closest I could come would be remote adminning (wherein I will need to share control of my desktop with the netbook - unacceptable). There are a few application solutions available for bus... Read more

Help? Sort of a new one to me... On my network...All workstations are Windows XP (mostly running SP2), and a few Windows 2000 workstaions. All Servers are Windows 2003, with 1 or 2 remaining Windows 2000 Servers still being used... I have been experiencing a problem lately with a few computers, in that they cannot connect to a remote computer using remote desktop or Terminal Services...When I shadow one of the workstations I can see that there is an issue, and when I try to log into the remote computer as the user, as myself (domain admin) or as the administrator I get the same error message (cannot connect, verify the username and password are correct, etc). This troubles me as I can connect to the same remote computer from my workstation... Using my account or the users account. If I look in terminal services manager on the server that cannot be logged into, I see there are active sessions (not all licenses are being used), so that is not an issue. I was able to fix one of the computers last week with this issue by formatting and reloading the os and all related applications, but clearly, there has to be another way. help!

Hi guys,

i have a question about remote connection, but i don't know exactly what kind of solution i'm looking for...

i have a desktop with quad-cpu and much bigger memory, and i have another laptop which is old and slow. My thinking is to make a server on the desktop, so that the laptop could share the cpu time and memory from desktop.

That is to say: there could be two persons in front of both computers, they log in using own username and they should not interrupt each others work, but all the programs should run on the desktop computer.

So Remote Desktop, VNC or TeamViewer etc. don't really match my needs...

I don't really know what we call this technology, but i know that citrix have this kind of business solution, what i wanna know is if there are any usable free or inexpensive solutions for personal/non-commercial use?

Thanks a lot!

Btw., my desktop is running Windows 7 Pro 64bit and Laptop is running Windows XP Pro 32bit.

A:Which Solution: Remote Desktop? Virtual Desktop? Remote Terminal?

There may be alternatives to Citrix, but the concept is basically to access a remote desktop on server where you run applications installed on server. If the performance is adequate you will gain in bandwidth and licensing costs, but the scenario you describe implies that the laptop should somehow share the resources of the server, physically(?)...

I am currently unaware of any inexpensive "citrix" solutions but I would think that is what you are after. Logging on the server, starting an app on server, but managing it on the laptop.

Have you looked in to a HDD and RAM upgrade of the Laptop?

Hello everyone

im running win xp sp2 on three home pcs
for ease, i will use three names: MainPC, Laptop, Spare

im trying to connect to each of them through remote desktop.
all three are connected through router

when i forward port 3389 to Laptop ip in router settings, i can connect to it using the other two
also the case when i forward port 3389 to Spare ip.
when testing these ports on canyouseeme.org, there is no problems.
also no problems with testing telnet [ip] 3389 in command prompt
terminal services is started on Laptop and on Spare

however, when i forward port 3389 to MainPC, i cannot connect to it through the other two computers using remote desktop.
the error message is

"The client could not connect to the remote computer.
Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that networs problems are preventing your connection. Please try again later."

when testing canyouseeme.org for port 3389 on MainPC, i get Error: Connection Refused.

When checking is terminal services is started using services.msc, it IS NOT started, and when i do start it, i get this message:
"The terminal services service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance logs and alerts services."

i have checked dependencies of this service, and all dependencies are started.
netstat -a has shown 3389 IS NOT listenin... Read more

Hello,

I have a Windows 7 network set up and whenever I connect remotely to another computer and lock their input such as their keyboard and mouse, the remote user still has the ability to press ctrl alt del, which then allows them to use their keyboard and mouse. My question is, is it possible to disable the ctrl alt del functionality in Windows 7 so that that Blue security screen does not appear? I have tried lots of remote desktop controlling software which has the option to lock the remote computer input, but they still can press ctrl alt del and unlock their keyboard and mouse. How do I stop this? Thanks!

Best regards,

Jerry

Can I add terminal server role to my domain controller? The domain contoller only holds the files of the folks in the active directory. No databases run on this computer.
As of now the DC will only allow just the two administrative log ins and I have setup the terminal services licenses for 150 users on another computer in the domain.

Thanks.

Hi all,
My task is to allow my accountant access to my MYOB files. He tells me his clients usually do it through Windows Terminal Services (which I guess is the Terminal Server software). A few questions to start: How do I find out if its been installed; how do I enable it? and how do I get into the configuration of it? I'm new to this one but Ive got Logmein and XPUnlimited to work in the (distant) past ....
The other totally newbie question I have is .... Once its setup, what does the person that wants to connect to my machine do to connect?
Thanks
T.

A:XP and Terminal Server

XP does not have Terminal Services; TS is available on Windows Server versions only. Instead, XP has a part of it called Remote Desktop. Certain versions of XP can act as a Remote Desktop server.

What are MYOB files, and what type of access does he need? (Meaning, what is he doing with them?)

BTW, which version of XP do you have?

Hi all hope someone has an idea because I am clueless.
helping out a Real estate office, they have Windows 2000 server which shares files and has a few apps, and runs terminal server for about 25 on and off users. The server is bogging a bit at the terminal database program, so i figured adding a second 2000 server to ease the terminal services load made sense. Also thought why not make it a bdc as well, good backup, but use the bdc for terminal services, double duty. My 30 or so accounts with settings already created so makes sense.

I installed the second machine, added it and promoted it to 'seconday server'. Within 10 minutes my users are populated from the pdc in user manager, beautiful. Except I can't log in to the bdc at all with anything but 'administrator". Whether through terminal services, or right at the console, any account other that administrator fails. "The system could not log you on, be sure username and password are correct" etc.

Am I missing something? Can I do what I'm trying to do?

Any help or clues would be appreciated!

Thanks all

Think I probably know the answer to this, but worth a shot.

I've got a bit of software that I've loaded onto our server and would like to be able to be accessed by people logging in.

When I run the application, it comes up saying that it can't be run on Windows Terminal Server.

Is there any options that I can adjust to enable this or will it simply not run?

A:Terminal Server

Probably not.... it usually helps to mention the software name though.

If it expressly says it won't run on terminal server then I highly doubt it will.

I have a NT 4.0 terminal server with the citrix server installed as well. The problem I am having is that when youre logged in and idle after a certain time you gett disconnected. Your processes still run on the server. When you log back in you're supposed to be right where you left off, however Word 2000 is coming back screwy where pages out of a document get scrambled. I want to bame this on word and temp files but not sure. Anyone else have any ideas? It only shows up in word so far adn only after a disconnect and reconnect.

On a shared printer from a NT Server I keep receiving an Event error 8775 Out of Disk space. I can print from NT server with any user I give permission to print with this printer. But when I install it on terminal server I can only print from administrator account even though the users have permission. This printer is a Deskjet 895C and connected to a Dlink printserver. I have a NT member server managing the que and is shared. I can't understand why it is not working! I just got done connecting a LJ4 with the exact print server and also connecting to terminal server and that is working fine.

A:{Resolved} - Terminal Server

I will answer my own question. I read on a website about the incompatability between HP printer drivers and NT Terminal Server. I used a Deskjet 660 driver in the place of the Deskjet 895 driver and worked and is currently printer for users on TS. Just wanted to share that in case anybody else runs into it.

Hi guys,

We have recently upgraded all of our clients machines from XP to Win7 pro. and left all our servers on Win2003 st. edition. While on XP, users were able to connect and print on our terminal server which is running Win2003 but we have been having problems after the clients were upgraded to win7. User's printers are not being redirected now. Im not too sure if this is windows7 with win2003 issue or just HP drivers issue because all the printers are HP. I did try and find most of the HP win7 drivers to isolate the problem and I even downloaded HP univ. drivers but still the printer were not being redirected. What could be the issue here, I'm really confused.

Please help. Thanks
