easy manual connect/disconnect toggle shortcut

Q: easy manual connect/disconnect toggle shortcut

The only built-in way to manually disconnect and reconnect in Windows 7 that I've been able to find, requires a lot of mouse clicks and even on my Core-i7 steel nerves when it starts "troubleshooting" to reconnect very slowly.

I found a better way and because lots of people in several forums have been asking for it I hope it's going to be a Sticky.

Download http://itsamples.com/downloads/network-activity-indicator.zip (always scan downloads for viruses)
Activate it, it will show up as the Windows XP network activity monitor in the tray.
Right click it and click Network Connections.
You've now opened an explorer Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network Connections.
(I'm sorry, I found no other decent way to get to here)

Lets say you want a connect/disconnect Local Area Connection toggle on your desktop. You simply right-drag Local Area Connection from this control panel to your desktop, once you release your mouse button click on Create Shortcut. You can create such toggle shortcuts for every network connection that shows up in the list.. A simple double-click on the freshly made desktop item connects or disconnects whenever you like.

If you don't like the XP style network activity indicator, feel free to remove it now. But remember, once you close the Network Connections window, there is no decent way in Windows 7 to reopen it. As far as I know only the Network Activity Monitor knows how to do that. By the way, I do like the visual indicator of network activity.

Why is Microsoft constantly overpaying nerds for shaving off perfectly healthy logical features from their operating systems?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I like to toggle Conservation mode in Vantage onwhen I game quite often to make sure the battery doesn't charge always to 100% but still preserve battery life by not gaming while on battery. Is there a way to easily toggle this without having to open up Vantage every single time I want to toggle it? My only interest is to use it while gaming exclusively, so having open Vantage everytime just for that occasion is a bit annoying to do. Any help is appreciated.

Running Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1.

Problem:

I am hearing the Device Connect, Device Disconnect, and Failed to Connect sounds at random times, sometimes 2 minutes to 10 hours apart. No error window pops up when this event occurs, nor do any event logs record anything out of the usual when these events occur. It does not appear to be connected to any specific program or application that I run.

I have scanned my computer with multiple virus scans and malware scans. I have observed firewall connectivity and it appears that whatever is causing it is not trying to connect to the internet. I have full confidence that it is not an infection. I have also reinstalled the OS and applied the updates, but the problem is still there. I have done a driver check on all the hardware and all drivers seem to be in order.

To me, this is truly a phantom problem that has driven me to wits end. I apologize if the information seems lacking, but to be honest it's pretty much all I konw about this problem. I would be greatful for any comments or suggestions.

What do you have connected to your USB ports?
What are the settings in your Control Panel to control the activity of the USB ports (in particular, any settings that sleep/disable that device when it's not being used).

The easiest thing to do is to disconnect all your USB devices and only connect them when using them. Also, follow the Safely Eject Hardware protocol when removing them from the computer.

Hello,
I have posted a related question some time ago, which was eventually resolved. However, after some time a problem with Easy Connect (used for MSRA) came back:
Whenever I arrive at the point in setting up a MSRA session where Easy Connect is needed, I get the reply: "Easy Connect is not Available". Here is an example of the problem:

Start MSRA
--> as expected, a window with "invite someone to help you" and " Help some who has invited you" appearsSelect "invite someone to help you"
--> as expected, a window with "Who do you want to get help from" appears Select "Invite someone to help you"
--> as expected, a windows with "How do you want to invite your trusted helper?" appearsSelect "Use Easy Connect"
--> as expected, the temporary "Create invitation window / checking network capabilities" window appearsNext, I would expect this windows to close a new window to provide me with the Easy Connect password. However, instead I get the window "Easy Connect is not available".
I cannot continue. (I have screenshots so can repost with them if that would clarity my question)
Any suggestion how to resolve would be appreciated.

A:Windows "Easy Connect" does not reply with the password / "Easy Connect is not Available"

The "Easy Connect" feature of "Windows Remote Assistance" requires IPv6.  It is probably not installed on your PC... but, even if you installed it on your PC there is a reasonable chance that IPv6 is not working on your network router.  Even if
your router and PC both support IPv6, it is unlikely the PC and router you are trying to remotely reach support IPv6... and so forth and so on...

Microsoft disabled the IPv6 tunneling server that supported "Easy Connect" in the middle of 2013 and this disabled the functionality of "Easy Connect".  I assume the reason Microsoft did this is because it looks like the network-world is finally getting
ready to start using IPv6.  Microsoft and many other IT corporations seem to be "clearing the decks" and preparing for this event.  Just a guess on my part.
I have heard of individuals getting a point-to-point IPv6 Peer Name Resolution Protocol session going, but not in an over-the-internet environment.

1) When I open my browser, I no longer get my ISP login screen (earthlink)
2) When I close my browser, I no longer get the auto-detect option (disconnect/stay connected)

After searching this forum and finding several fixes for this problem, I did the following......
start>settings>control panel>internet options>connections>settings>the dial up settings area no longer has my name and password.... i can click on properties but the advanced button is greyed out.
When I go thru My computer to the dial up networking area, if I double click my earthlink connection, my login and password are there, but this seems to be the only way I can now connect and disconnect.
I checked the Microsoft website and found Q153965 -- it doesn't give the info for win 98/ie 6, but it doesn't matter since i can't seem to get to the advanced button.
I read about the registry hack in an earlier post... should I try this?? If it works though I still have the prob with connecting.
Thanks in advance for any help and let me know if you need any more info.

Is it like USB or does it need special procedures to use.

I am being troubled by repeated occurrences of the Disconnect and Connected sounds.
I am trying to identify what is causing these and thought there might be a clue in the event logs.
Does anyone know if these events are logged and where which might give me a clue as to what is happening?

A:Disconnect and Connect events

These Admin events are likely to be logged in DeviceSetupManager via the Information level.

Right click on the Start button and select Event Viewer. View all instances of the Information events and look for a time when you know it has happened. You might get a clue from the references to any devices being connected/disconnected or serviced.

I connect a device, oh let's say an ext hdd or flash to my pc, do my thing (normally xfr files) and when done do the required safe-disconnect procedure. A short while later I may need it again, but I always have to physically disconnect the cable/device and re-connect to get my pc to 'see' the device again. Is there away to do this w/o physically disconnecting the external device?

(I went from Windows ME straight to 7 and seem to recall that there was a 'detect hardware' button that would re-establish the device's presence on the pc w/o the hassle of removing and replacing/unplugging/plugging the cable/device)

The possible method is to safely remove the drive and then force Windows to re-scan for hardware changes;

Would this program be suitable for your purposes?

Silly question probably, but what is the best routine for going offline and then to reconnect when appropriate. I'm going all round the houses at the minute...

A:connect/disconnect from internet

You can go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Centre > Change Adapter Settings, then right click the network you want to disconnect and select enable/disable to turn it on or off.

If it's something you want to do regularly, it's possible to create a shortcut here using a CLSID key (it sounds more complicated than it actually is).

Go to C:\Users\[Your Username]Right click an empty area and select New > ShortcutWhere it says 'Type the location of the item', paste the following: explorer shell:::{7007ACC7-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E}Click 'Next' and give it a name such as Network. Then click finish. Now that you have a shortcut, you can right click on it and pin it to Start, or pin it to Taskbar. If you want, you can change the icon like you can with other shortcutsOn clicking the shortcut it will take you directly to the adapter settings, where you can then right click on the network you want to disconnect and select enable/disable to turn it on or off.

Another way would be to create a shortcut to C:\Windows\System32\ncpa.cpl. The only problem with this method is that it won't give you the option to right click on it and pin it to Start or Taskbar, therefore the above method is probably more flexible.

For more information on creating CLSID Key (GUID) Shortcuts, see the following link:

I've been experiencing problems with USB on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. If I connect or disconnect a USB device, there is quite often a delay (30 seconds to 5 minutes) before Windows acknowledges the connection.

It doesn't seem to matter what USB port I am using. it happens with USB HDD Enclosures, External drives, wireless keyboard/mouse, microphone EVERYTHING!

BOTH connecting and disconnecting USB devices have this delay problem, if I am disconnecting a device, it will stay in My Computer for 30 seconds to 5 minutes AFTER I disconnected it.

How do I fix??

A:USB connect/disconnect delay

Go to the Dell website and under Support enter your product information. Look for your service tag on your machine and enter that.

Then you should be presented with a list of drivers. If not click on Drives and Downloads to the left.

If the USB drivers are not listed in the menu, then they are bundled with the chipset driver.

Hi

I had been using Windows 8 till last week. It was very easy to connect or disconnect the internet in that OS. I simply clicked on the network icon in the system tray and the clicked on connect or disconnect and done. My username and password were stored so I didn't have to retype each time.

Now in Windows 10, when I click on this system tray icon, I get the option of my ISP and when I click on that, it takes me to settings, network sharing etc and there I must again click on my ISP link which then prompts me for my username and password. It's very very cumbersome to do this again and again(I don't keep my connection on all the time). Windows 10 has my username and password stored which I can see but it still prompts me every time. And for disconnecting too it take me to settings etc .

Can it not be made simple and easy like it was in Win7 or 8?

Thanks.

I suddenly started having problems connecting my "upstairs" computer to my wireless network. My downstairs computer is the one wired into the router, and my upstairs computer is receiving through a Linksys wireless card. I had the connection yesterday, then problems started. (Both computers run WinXP) When I boot, the connection is not there, and no connections are found. Then I go into "change the order of connections", remove them all, and the computer sees the connection. I click connect, it prompts me to enter the network key, which I do. Then the screen showing my connection starts to shift between showing my network waiting to be connected, then showing my network as connected and waiting to be disconnected, and back and forth, etc., etc. If I try to repair the connection it just tries and tries, to no avail. Eventually the screen no longer sees my network. Then I go back into the "change order of connections" and the whole thing starts all over. When I look in the order of connection screen properties for my network, the info is correct except for the network key, which is the default 8 character key, whatever it is. Entering the correct key does nothing, and the next time I look it is back to default again. As soon as I post this I will try it with security disabled, but I am not optimistic. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The closest thing I know of is to create a shortcut on the desktop for the Local Area Connection and then click on disable to disconnect from it. Once you want to connect again, you would just enable it. To do this, you would right click on your network icon on the lower right on your screen, click on open network and sharing center, then click on change adapter settings, then click and drag your LAN connection to your desktop. Again, there might be a better way to do this, but this is the easiest way, and simplest too.

Hello, tonight I installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1. After the installation I see there's a cross over my network connection. But it keeps trying to connect. It's like you plug in cable, disconnect cable, every 5 seconds or so. But it never manages to fully connect. It gets to the state "identifying" then cross comes back.

I have tried 2 other network cables, none of them worked either. So I've tried reinstalling network drivers but didn't work either. Though Im not sure if I fully uninstalled drivers, cause network icon stayed in taskbar even when I thought they were gone. I really can't get my fingers on what's wrong here. sounds like you have a duplicate IP address on one the the boxes

get a connection and make sure you can browse the Internet using google
and search for anything you like (we'll use this as a test)

Connect a device and make the browser search again (even on the same words).
If you get disconnected, then the last device connected has the conflict.

Go to that device and REMOVE any static IP address and make sure you have
Automatic DHCP for the IP and DNS addresses on that device.

It does this all the time.

I think this started after I return a logitech mx100 mouse that was defective, although it didn't do that with that mouse, it started when I pluged in my old mouse (microsoft intelliMouse optical) but I'm not sure this was the cause.

All my drivers are up to date.

Any ideas?

Been running my PC pretty hard this past week running photoshop - large and multiple files. Not sure if that has anything to do with the current situation, though.

Dell XPS710
Running Win XP SP3 (32-bit)
4GB RAM

Was working in photoshop again tonight and all of a sudden, I get the windows sound that you get when you connect new hardware and then disconnect hardware. I'll be moving my mouse and it will just stall and then the sounds come. In the span of 30-45 min while working, it has happened about 2 dozen times and I just had to stop as it was happening too frequently.

I only have a few things connected (via USB) to the PC - Mouse/keyboard/printer/external HDD/Bluetooth dongle adapter. I've unplugged all except for the mouse and the keyboard trying to diagnose it and it still happens.
Internally, I've got 3 hard drives installed - Primary HDD and 2 data HDDs (All SATA)

Any ideas on how I can find out what is causing this? Not sure how to diagnose the problem.

BTW, I recently just reinstalled the entire OS from scratch 3 weeks ago. I've been running the same configuration since I got the machine a couple years ago and this is the first time I'm getting the rapid connect/disconnect sounds.

i have a toshiba laptop with 802.11G. when i click on the i-net icon on the laptop it goes to my homepage but disconnects in about 5 minutes. i click on my wireless network connection applet in the system tray and shows an incorrect IP address:169.254.18.18 and subnet mask as 255.255.0.0. the correct ones are 192.168.1.100 and 255.255.255.0. It does this 3 or 4 times after i reboot it. a little while later it connects online and stays online for an hour or so then disconnects again and reconnects all by itself? how can it switch to an incorrect IP address and subnet mask a few times then have the correct ones and stay online and networking with the other pc's?
thanks, Jim

I run Win XP. I am having no problems.

But two or three times a day I get the Microsoft Sound that is made when you disconnect a device, and then a few seconds later I get the sound that is made when you reconnect it. (As though, for instance, you disconnect a mouse from one USB port and plug it into a different port.)

Can anybody explain this? Or suggest where in Administrative Tools I might go to try to figure it out? Thanks.

I was just wondering if anyoen could help me with this problem. Every now and then I can't connect to any servers. The second it says connected to server it then changes that to disconnected and shoves me back to server screen saying something like the connection could not be made. I had it working for a few joins a little while ago but it stopped letting me join again. I am on a lan using a linksys router, and never had a problem for years using it. Except a new computer was jsut added to the LAN fro ma 2 comp to a 3 comp LAN now. And it seems to me that whenever someone else uses the other new comp on the LAN my cstrike has this problem but that could jsut be coincidence for now. Please tell me what to do I ca'nt connect to any servers right now(I've tried 4, and the only main diference lately was that I got custom spraypain images, but I joined earlier today and the servers had no beef with it and other peple have customs on it allthe time, my frined uses the ame application and such for sprays and he has been on for years). PLEASE HELP ME!! THANKYOU!

Hi all

I have several network connections configured.

There is one wifi connection which automatically connects to my WLAN,another cable based LAN connection to a NAS which is used for backupsand some L2TP connection connections (used for VPN if needed).

Is there a way to connect to these VPNs via the command line (so that I can have a "Batch" File which starts or stops this connection)? I already tried to find something but havent found a solution.

A:How to connect/disconnect to a VPN using the command line?

it might be that i need to install some additional windows features now i upgraded to 10 but previously this rasdial command line worked for me to do this

C:\Windows\System32\rasdial.exe "VPNname"

I am on a Vista home premium system and have a resource monitor running as a gadget. I keep getting a cpu usage of around 30% off and on and hear the system sound of connection of a usb device every few seconds. I can't seem to nail down the culprit. I am monitoring processes in device mgr. and see windows media player.exe show up on list and then disappears about the same time frame. The program is not running. Anybody got a clue???

I use to work with 2 monitor, and I found that the win 10 managing of the connection is quite bad, and sometimes it appens that it mixed up icons and font dimension. I can admit that. Now something stranger happens: (working only with the laptop monitor)When I connect or when I disconnect the charger, the font dimension change! And I have to move to Advance font settings and re-set the good ones... Any idea to solve this annoying truble?
