Main Problem: Cannot update windows or connect to download.microsoft.com

Q: Main Problem: Cannot update windows or connect to download.microsoft.com

have been having a long running problem with not being able to connect to Microsoft downloads, and I cannot update my computer. It been going on for about 6 months now, and I have tried many many trouble shooting steps, and cannot resolve the problem. I think there many be a virus or trojan that my avast cannot get rid of. I have some problems with redirecting on firefox, this problem used to be worse, but has gotten better since I got avast. But nothing I have tried has fixed my inability to update or connect to microsoft downloads.

Preferred Solution: Main Problem: Cannot update windows or connect to download.microsoft.com

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Main Problem: Cannot update windows or connect to download.microsoft.com

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

You can read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper at this forum.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Name it ComFx, and Save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

You can get help on disabling your protection programs here

Double click on ComFx.exe & follow the prompts.
Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.

I keep getting the yellow shied w/the exclamation point in it on my icon tray. It tells me that new security updates are available, but no matter how many times I download it, it keeps popping back up. It's as if it it not detecting that I have downloaded it. I've checked ot see what is dling and it appears to be the same string of numbers (Microsoft Net Framework KB928366). Any advice would be SOOOOO appreciated! Thanks!

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

Hello,My computer appears to be infected w/ some sort of malware; I think it's a Trojan.DNSChanger. Symptoms include: 1. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and http://update.microsoft.com redirect to Google. My AV software, Windows LiveOneCare, isn't able to update from Microsoft either. 2. Attempts to download Windows Defender or Windows Malicious Software Removal tool from Microsoft.com would always time out. It appears I can't download anything from Microsoft.com. (I can, however, download from other sites, e.g., http://download.cnet.com.) 3. When I try going to http://www.malwarebytes.org, Firefox says, "Firefox can't find the server at www.malwarebytes.org."I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware a couple of times. First time MBAM found (and cleaned) 7 infected registry keys, 1 infected registry value, 6 infected registry data items, & 3 infected folders. Restarted my computer per MBAM's cleanup instructions, and problems #1-3 were still present. Ran MBAM again; this time it found & cleaned 4 infected registry data items. However, problems #1-3 are still present. I've attached the MBAM logs in case they might be helpful. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have a desktop with Windows 7 32-bit that I have my Netgear28 wifi router plugged into. I've never had problems connecting to my desktop with any of my 4 other laptops or accessing the printer through it. However, I just bought a pawnshop 64-bit Win 7 laptop with all kinds of bloatware on it, including Norton. Can access the internet through the router, and the homegroup says it is connected. I see my main computer fine, but if I try to connect to it or EVEN THE LAPTOP I'M ON through "Network," I get the following:

"Workgroup is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

Cannot access printers attached to the desktop.

However, I can access the laptop from the desktop without any problems, though.

All network settings that I can see on both computers are the same. Firewall is off.

At my wits end. Any more info you want? Thanks in advance.

Note: I have searched the error message and have seen lots of answers, but can't seem to fix it.

Hello and welcome Venture mate probably the best thing to do is a clean install to get rid of all the bloat and crapware especially if you do not have a lot of data on it.Otherwise save the data then do that.

I do not have a Windows Update problem, but I do have a Microsoft Update problem. The latter is a tool to check for updates for Microsoft products other than Windows.

I finally installed Office 2016 Professional X64 this week and I should be able to configure Windows Update to check for updates for it, but I can't, as the link at the bottom of "Windows Update" home page ("Get updates for other Microsoft products. Find out more") to do so, points to this meaningless MS web page as shown on right side of image, below:
Microsoft Windows Update

Currently, system is set to receive updates for Windows only, and doesn't offer an option to configure it for other Microsoft product updates.

Anyone have a resolution for this, as it's essential to be able to update this product.

I've Office 2010 Professional installed on my other Win 7 Ultimate laptop, and updates for it have never been a problem. It's set to receive updates for Windows and other Microsoft products, unlike this machine.

This machine is less than a year old, but I chose to "downgrade" the OS from Win 8.1 Pro to Win 7 Pro when purchased. Could that be the issue here?

Sorted!

This works quite well, especially the last paragraph:

Two days ago I received a windows update/download. Then at 3am which is the time I have set for it-it automatically shut down my computer. I've never had that happen. Is that normal? Then on the shutdown screened something happened because it didn't go away. After about 20 minutes (it was like it was frozen, but the mouse cursor still moved) I hit the power button on the computer and still nothing happened. I then hit the power button on my surge protecter, waited 30 seconds and then turned everything back on. When the computer tried to come up (before the screen that showed all the icons) the screen turned black for 5-7 seconds and then everything came up. This could be normal though. Usually I just hit the power button on it in the morning to turn it on while I'm doing other things. When everything came back on there was a green check mark on the bottom right of the screen saying that the computer had installed the windows update. XP has a system restore function on it. Should I do this just in case and then download the update manually?

A:problem with windows update/download xp sp3

Hi -
You can try a system restore and see what is the last restore date / time in the panel -
This Should be the download that came through - If not check at M/soft updates to see if there are any items to install -
Then do this as you would normally do (download and install when ready) -
The items may be already in , but it never hurts to check -

Thank You -

Ever since the most recent Windows 10 update, I have been unable to connect to my apartment complex's secured internet connection (Reserve 802.1x). Whenever I attempt to connect, I get a Windows Security sign in prompt box that prevents me from connecting (I am not sure what information would even go in here to make the sign in box go away.. I tried my computer username/pw and that did not work, so I am not sure what else it would be).
The connection is there, and my roommates are able to connect. However, I am able to connect to the slower, unsecured internet connection (Reserve Wireless).

Note:
I called Microsoft and spoke with the Windows support specialist. He said it would cost $99 for a one-time conversation with tech support, or $140 for a year-long subscription. I do not believe this is a technical issue, as connecting was not an issue prior to this forced update. I also do not have $99 or $140 to spend on something like this.

Hello all. I've had to disable automatic updates as this one and KB2518870 don't install and the PC keeps trying to download them every day! When I go into control panel it tells me that I have MS.NET Framework 4 Client Profile. But cannot uninstall it. When I go to the "turn windows feature on/off" option it says I have MS.NET Framework 3.5.1

I've tried reloading version 4 from the MS website but it tells me I already have version 4 (or the download is being blocked). I've tried a clean boot - doesn't help. I've tried turning off Norton - doesn't help. Error code is 66A (unknown error).

I'm running Windows 7 Home premium on a Dell Studio One. Problems with these downloads seem to be quite common.

I've tried downloading them individually - doesn't help.

A:(another) cannot download update KB2478663 for Microsoft.NET 4

All fixed. First the 2 updates disappeared from the important list without being installed and a MS.NET Framework 4 Client Profile update appeared in the recommended list. After installing this the other 2 reappeared in the important list and installed without any problem! It's a mystery to me.

Help! I am completely unable to update Win7 Home Premium 64, or download any content related to or recieved via any Microsoft portal.

Using Windows Update I receive the error code 80072EE2. After searching every forum i could find the only solution offered was deactivate any third party firewalls and retry. I completely shut down all firewalls and anti-virus software including Microsoft Defender. This made no difference. I can't update Windows, Xbox Live, Windows Live or receive content from any of these. Also couldn't activate Win7 online.

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

Your best option may be to open device manager (with device connected) and uninstall any related device, making sure the 'Delete driver software for this device' is checked.Once you have done this, unplug your device, uninstall WMDC 6.1 and reboot your machine. Then follow the instruction on my first reply, this should sort it for you.If anyone is helpfull, please click the 'Vote as helpfull' icon.

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

I am attempting to install the following updates through the Microsoft Update Web site:

KB911927 ("Security Update for Windows XP")
KB912945 ("Update for Windows XP")

Upon selecting the updates and clicking the "Install Updates" button, the "Installing Updates" dialog box then indicates that it is downloading each update, and that the download fails. According to the update history, each download fails with the following status:

I checked for updates in the Microsoft Store, and I got a few updates. I updated all of them. But Groove Music won't update, giving me an error. So I decided to uninstall it (right click and uninstall - I did not use any kind of scripts). But now Microsoft Store won't download or update any app. Whenever I try download to any app, the store just hangs until I close it.
Here is the event for it in Event Viewer:

I also checked the readability report for this in Security and Readability and it was also the same:

I have searched a lot for a fix for this and also tried the common fixes (re-registering the store app, resetting the store, resetting windows update components, wsreset.exe). None of them worked for me. I'm hoping that maybe there is something in the event details about the error that might pinpoint the cause of the error.
Thank you so much in advance.

Hi and welcome to TSF

1: This looks like a net connection issue to me or a infectious one if your connection is OK from the ISP and your config.

2: I would advise/look at your logs but I'm not authorized to do so on this board. There is a special froum made here for that with Security Analysts for this task, specifically who handle all the parasite shooting.

Hello,

My computer worked great the day before yesterday. All of a sudden I cannot connect to the internet except in Safe mode with networking. I suspected a Trojan or Virus and have scaned with NOD 32 Antivirus 4, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware and all three report no threats. What happends is that Internet Explorer opens and then gets caught in a loop continually trying to resolve the web page.

Any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have recently managed to get a virus/spyware/malware (im afraid my computer knowledge is really useless, I will try my best to be technical) which I first recognised because when I started internet explorer a bunch of pop-ups came up saying I had to download 'Anti-Virus 2009'. It looked similar to a Microsoft notice but it was slightly different in colour and not very detailed so I knew it was a fake, and each time I start Internet Explorer the pop-ups come up again.

At the time I had a SpyBot installed and Semantic anti-virus, the Semantic anti-virus found nothing, the SpyBot found a lot of things (probably not all related to the main issue) all of which I deleted because I didn't know what else to do . But the pop-ups came back the next time I started internet explorer So I ran SpyBot a few more times, each time it found a few more things which I deleted, but kept coming back. The main thing that SpyBot kept finding again was microsoft.windows.securitycentre.firewallbypass and when I gave up with SpyBot the last search also showed a Virtumonde.prx and virtumonde.dll

Running in a panic to my mum she told me I should get the anti virus and spyware that she has, which we get free through our BT Broadband called BT NetProtect Plus, which when I phoned the company they installed for me, and it comes up on my computer as McAfee, although I don't know if it is a complete version of McAfee because it is through BT?

After running this scan it found a f... Read more

Hi and welcome. We need to know a couple of things.. Are you running XP?Do you now have both Symantec and McCaffee running as you can only have one. They will cause conflicts with each other. Now for the time being Disable or turn off Spybot for this scan..Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" opti... Second, on my laptop with Vista (SP1) when I restart/turn on the computer and windows starts, it doesnt load windows explorer and just opens my my documents folder. I have to start the task manager and run windows explorer from there each time I restart my computer.

Help is appreciated, thankyou in advance =)

Windows 2000-KB23980-X86-ENU[1].EX> file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtShutdownSystem.
I have read several threads and followed the following instructions:
I have already run the symantic fix http://securityresponse.symantec.co...er/FixBlast.exe and it told me that I do not have the worm virus.
I have also dowloaded and run 'Adware 6.0' and 'Spybot Search and destroy'. I have run these programs and quarenteed/deleted the red files....I didn't have any green ones.
I used Hijack but, still I dont know enough about computers to have a clue as to what to do about that program or what it does.

This is one of my end users computers. His surfing habits are questionable but he's the the VP so there isn't much I can do there. He informed me his browser (IE) will redirect to random websites (this I have confirmed). It happens both in Google and sometimes when I type the address in.

I attempted to navigate to update.microsoft.com to check for updates but I just get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" page.

I am at a loss.

Thank you!
