System Restore doesn't work: "rstrui.exe - application error"

Q: System Restore doesn't work: "rstrui.exe - application error"

My Win 7x64 desktop was off for several days, with the console unplugged. Upon first start up today, I was prompted to update the AMD driver to Catalyist 12.10, which I did. It seemed to have an effect on another app that I wanted to reverse, so I ran System Restore to right before the computer was last shut down. It returned an error message, and again after a normal reboot: It read that System Restore didn't complete running. "The data is invalid (0x8007000D)." Running System Restore to later time points got the same result.

Later, I tried a cold boot into System Repair, F8 (nothing found). The System Restore error message now was as follows:

"rstrui.exe - Application error
The instruction at 0xfb30584d referenced memory at
0x00000008. The memory could not be read."

I did a google search on rstrui.exe error, but didn't find a lot and so far none of it has worked. The last system image backup before today was two weeks ago, so that's not a welcome option. Any ideas what the problem might be and how to get Sys Restore going again? Thanks,

Preferred Solution: System Restore doesn't work: "rstrui.exe - application error"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

By chance, do you have Agnitum Outpost firewall on your machine? Other forum threads indicate this could cause problems for system restore. The recommended solution was to disable a function called Self Protection.

You could also see if there are any damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from and elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Hey all,

First, let me say how glad I am to have found this website. You guys are so generous to give your time to help us non-tech savvy folks out.

Earlier today, my laptop was hit with a virus (I think it may be something to the effect of Win 32/Nuqel.E, if that is a virus.) I kept getting the error message "Application cannot be executed. The file rstrui.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"" The .exe file that was infected would change, but rstrui is one that popped up a lot. If I pressed yes, it would automatically open up this virus software in my Internet Explorer (AVS, I think), and it would block all other webpages, saying "This site may cause harm to your computer."

I haven't gotten the "Application cannot be executed..." error message for a while now (probably due to the scans I performed listed below), but am still having issues with my computer:

-Internet Explorer and Google Chrome are both not functioning properly, although Mozilla seems to be doing OK (knock on wood).
-If I go to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, I get a message that says "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog." and "Failure - security options.
-Randomly, my printer's, HP Deskjet All-in-One Series, installation series will pop up and say "Fatal error during installation" though I wasn't trying to install anything related to my printer - it actually isn't even hooked up. The t... Read more

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
Notes....
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!

This is a question for information about why my networking problem finally was resolved.
I have four PC?s on my network; one Windows 7 and three Windows XP. The Windows 7 PC always sees all three of the other computers. However the Windows XP computers sometimes don?t see the other XP computers when I press ?My Network Places.? Quite by accident I discovered that if I press ?View Workgroup Computers? then ALL the other PC?s in the network DO show up. Furthermore, if I click through "View Workgroup Computers" and access/edit a file on one of the other computers, then this computer will ALSO show up in ?My Network Places.? This behavior seems to be quite consistent and works every time I have tried it. Apparently, this is a workaround to the long vexing problem of why my networked PC?s sometimes don?t show up under ?My Network Places.?

My question: why does ?View Workgroup Computers? apparently always show all the networked PC?s, when ?My Network Places? does so only intermittently or sometimes not at all?

Thanks for any response.

Whenever I plug in my USB device it wants to "scan and fix" but works if I just continue. On the other hand the G drive which is for my SD card gives me errors of corruption even before I took it out for the first time. Something is up with the drives and they are updated and all that. Also, with the SD card it doesn't let me delete and when I do add it is just the folder without the contents which then I can't delete. Help me fix this problem. I have a LX series Gateway computer with the pop up drive if that gives you any idea what I am dealing with.

I've got a weird problem here to report. I'm on a Lenovo N200 laptop running Windows 7 x64. Around half the time, the computer will boot up with the trackpad not responding. During times when this happens, I can look into the device manager and see a "code 10" ("device cannot start") for the trackpad. Restarting the computer fixes the problem.

I've had the problem once or twice over the last few years, but just a few weeks ago, it started happening very regularly (+/- 50% of all startup attempts). I can't recall making any notable changes to the system lately that could cause something like this. When the problem first started, it also affected the display adapter (Windows would start with an extremely low resolution and the graphic card would show a similar fault in the device manager, in addition to the trackpad problem described here), but this has since stopped.

I have tried updating the driver for the trackpad to a newer version, but the problem persists.

Hardware faults were considered, but I was able to successfully boot the computer from a WinPE CD five times in a row with no issues, so it would seem like this is less likely to be a hardware bug.

Any ideas as to where to go from here? I don't want to have to reinstall an otherwise clean and functional operating system for something this trivial.

Hi, try using this to check the temps HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

On a friends PC I updated Windows XP to SP2 also did about 60 other Windows Updates.
When I try to open System Restore the program starts to load, the Window opens but stops and a runtime script error appears that says "Do you wish to debug?"

I went to C:\Windows\System32\Restore\ and it had 2 rstrui.exe files there both were the same size of 371 KB. One was installed today along with SP2 Update and the other was installed a few years ago. Perhaps tomorrow when I go back to my friend's PC, I'll try to deleted one of files and see if that may be the cause.

Any ideas on how to work around this issue?

Hey there,

Recently in the past week ive been randomly having the internet "stop working" after 30-40mins of being on it, and all websites coming up with Connection Refused, with Sky Tech Support saying its all working fine and there showing activity.

So I assumed it may have been something I recently downloaded, so I uninstalled them all and it still kept happening, so I then tried a system restore, only to be met with "System Restore failed - Unexpected Error". Tried restoring around 3 times now and the same thing everytime.

The internet seems to be working still and active, but websites either come up as "Connection Refused" or just don't load up at all with a blank white screen.

Im posting asking for help with both the system restore and internet problem hoping that I can kill two birds with one stone by restoring it to before it started doing all this.

Help?

Vista system restore attempt throwing "not enough space" status
Hi!

I'm unable to boot into the Windows GUI. When I power up the computer, the "Startup Repair" window stating "Your computer was unable to start" appears and attempts to correct the problem. After a few minutes, it reports that it cannot repair the computer automatically and presents me with a "System Recovery Options" window. Since the initial Startup Repair was unsuccessful, I'm choosing not to select that option again...so I thought the "System Restore" option would be the next best approach. When I try to perform the System Restore, I run into the following scenario . . . after I select my restore point and the restoring files activity is complete I recieve and error 0x80070070 and a message citing not enough space. My C: drive has 19Gb free so is the lack of space in a partition and if so how can I change it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I'm more than happy to post additional information as required.

Thanks!

I have searched everywhere on the internet for hours trying to find a solution to this, but no one seems to know exactly what causes this error when doing a system restore. Here is what it looks like on my computer after I try to do a system restore:

It could be that the "registration" folder is missing from C:\Windows or from C:\Windows\System32.

I wonder if someone might be able to check and see if you have a folder called "Registration" in either of these 2 directories. I have a valid OEM copy of Windows7 that I paid for and registered online about 6 months ago. I have enabled "View all hidden folders and files". Does anyone have any experience with this particular problem? I have the 32-bit version of Windows 7 with SP1.

I tried Uninstalling and Re-Installing the NIC, no luck. Updating the Driver didn't help either as it says it's up-to-date.

I've tried manually assigning the IP address, but I don't think I did it correctly, as I am quite new with Networking problems and especially with all the IP addresses', DNS, DHCP. etc. So I need support with that and try it out whether that fix will work, although I doubt at this point since I tried everything.

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

How do I get rid of the Word file association and go back to 'unknown application'?

Hi there,

I got here by following threads on the same topic as far as they would take me... but not seeing the answer.

Vista 64 Home Premium, well-maintained laptop, I have used system restore successfully before.

Yesterday, my system crashed a few times. When I tried a "system restore", I saw that there were no restore points anymore.
Apart from system restore, the system runs fine now after these steps:
- defrag
- disk check
- virus scan
- windows update
- sfc/scannow

But System Restore still has no restore points, and will not create any!
Wondering if one service is stopped that should be running (in addition to Windows Backup and Volume Shadow Copy).

Many thanks for any insights you can offer.
Here are the symptoms.

Code:
System Restore Symptoms:
- Vista 64 SP2 Home Premium, no dual boot
- 136 GB free on system hard drive (C).
- vssadmin list shadowstorage => Used 0 / Allocated 0 / Maximum 40GB
- vssadmin list providers => no errors (see bottom)
- vssadmin list writers => no errors (see bottom)
- vssadmin list volumes => C and D (see bottom)
- Services: Windows Backup service and Volume Shadow Copy are on automatic. Windows Backup shows "started", but VSS does seem not start by itself. I tried starting it to create a restore point. It starts, but later on I see that it has stopped again.
- System Restore is enabled on my system drive (just in case something was corrupted, in System Protection I unchecked C (system), ap... Read more

A:Vista doesn't "want to" create restore points anymore

This might be a clue?
In my post from yesterday, I noticed that even though the "vssadmin list writers" command does not trigger errors, it shows "Waiting for Completion" for several of the writers.
Does anyone know what that means, and whether that is relevant to the issue?

Thanks.

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

Well, I've been having this problem for quite a while now, although I never really the true extent of it until just now, but I get the following message from Windows ANY TIME I try to make use of System Restore and would like to know what might be causing it and how to address it.

===========================================
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore.

You might want to try System Restore again and choose a different restore point.
===========================================

Frankly I'm sick to death of it --I don't think it's ever worked one time on this machine now that I think about it, or if it did, it was quite some time ago. But this has been an issue for me in months past, and I never tried to address it until now. Where to start and what can I do to get it to function properly? And please note that I have tried using other earlier restore points, but it always comes back with the very same message you see above.

Thanks in avance.

Hi,
I'm trying to associate files with a program by right clicking on the file choosing "open with..."
I choose "select the program from a list"

The program I want is not in the list, So I choose browse, I locate the program and click open.
It waits a second then returns to the list, but my program has not been added to the list.

Also if it try and add the extension manually to the Tools > Folder Options > File types section,
This fails too, The extension appears but clicking "Advanced" and adding the open command saves until I close the folder options window, then its gone again.

My program is on a different hard drive to the windows installation, surely that should not cause a problem?

Any one have any ideas how I could solve this issue? Its quite annoying.

Thanks for your time.
Rob

,,,,different ways that W7 is backing up my files?

what is the proper/best way to use either?

thx

A:is "backup and restore" and "system restore" different,,,

Backup and Restore backs up by default system files, the registry and documents, pictures, videos, and music. System Restore makes a backup of application files and system files and the registry. A system restore point should be made before installing programs in case anything goes wrong. A backup through backup and restore should be done in a monthly or weekly schedule since a drive can fail at any tine. Backup and Restore needs another drive to backup files to or else you will be filling up your system drive. There are better alternatives for it such as Macrium Reflect, but this is the simplest way of backing up in my opinion.

Sorry for posting this in the driver section, I decided to post another in the wireless section. If you want to close one, that's fine just please close the one in the driver section. Thank you.
Before you answer this question, I've already done the following:
1.) Download and install the latest driver for the adapter. I've also tried reinstalling the adapter.
2.) I've already tried ipconfig /renew or release or whatever you want to call it.
3.) I've tried changing the ip address to static and rather automatic or automatic to static...Didn't do anything.

I have absolutely no idea what to do. I've tried EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING on the internet.
When I run the troubleshooter I get this message:

My dad was recently doing some work on this computer and he REALLY changed the settings in Word around. I was able to get most of them back to how I like it, except one.

When I highlight text and click "delete" to erase it or highlight it and start typing to replace it... it doesn't work. It's like some "text protector" where it doesn't delete it.

How do I fix it back to the original way? (I remember this happening once before).

I am new here. At first a happy new year to everybody.

Yesterday I bought the boxed version of True Image 7.0 and installed it. During the installing I also made boot disks as well as as a boot cd, both in the "complete" version. After that I tried to boot from the disks and also from the cd (of course changed the bios to boot from cdrom). Both didn't work ! My computer booted and I did get the start screen from Acronis but after that it said: "Loading Acronis, please wait" , with the disks as well as with the cd. After that nothing happened anymore, even after 10 minutes.
I made a new boot cd but this time a "safe" version and that DID work. I assume however that, because there are no usb drivers etc. included, you can't use it with an external usb drive or so.
Does anyone here have the same experience or a clue to solve it ? I already emailed Acronis, but didn't get a reply yet (probably because it's New Year ?)
Thanks in advance.

Regarding Augie65's solution to red X in place of pictures, it does not work. The block images box in Outlook Express is already unchecked. Any other ideas?

A:Unchecking "block" images to solve red X doesn't work

Check out this:
Open Outlook Express, Tools> Options> Send tab> check HTML radio button under Mail Sending Format then click HTML Settings button and check Send pictures with messages box. If the picture is linked to a web page, you will have to be connected to the internet to view the picture. You might check with the sender whose pictures you can't see and make sure that they have the Send pictures with messages checked on their program.

Just recently I had re-formatted, this being one of the problems. It was fixed, and halleluja! I could restart! w00tzor!

I started installing my software and games, and continued restarting.

The last things I installed:

Soundblaster Live! Value Drivers
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Drivers

While installing both of them (From CD, I have two drives), I went into MSconfig and dis-abled the AudioHQ that auto starts, and when both of them finished installing (Well SBLive drivers finished a little early) I hit restart, as prompted by my msconfig.

I was greeted by "Primary Hard Disk 0 not found"

"Strike F1 to retry, F2 to enter setup utility"

I hit retry 3 times, and it didn't work. I went into my BIOS Setup, and it said my Primary Hard Disk is an "unknown" device. When I bootup and go into the menu again, It says its my 60 GB drive, as its supposed to.

What happened?

A little info that may help:

Primary HD with OS and programs installed:

Drive C: 60 GB Drive, 7200 RPM, manufactured by Western Digital

Drive D: 20 GB Drive, I THINK its 7200 RPM, manufactured by Maxtor

Both are formatted as NTFS. My computer was booting just fine before I did the previous actions, is there anything I Can do?

[Edit] I checked the other post with a guy having the same problem, and i just remembered:

The 60 GB WD drive is set as "Master"

And 20 GB Maxtor drive is set as "Slave/Cable select" (One or the other)

A:Help! "Restart" Doesn't work (Hard to explain), WinXP

MSCONFIG would not cause your HD to not be recognised by the BIOS. If your Bios is not seeing the HD there may be a loose wire. Bad cable of the HD may be going bad. Someone made a good point about spinup time in another thread. Myabe the BIOS is not giving the drive ample time to get to speed. If its a newer drive it may be having a problem with the motor. Try downloading Maxtor's HD check utility.

Hi all,

I noticed a really annoying issue on my machine.

When installing various software, when it asks me if I want to customise location, when I click on the "browse" button, it either doesn't do anything or in some cases it will open "Browser For Folder" window, but it will only show my Desktop>Usename folder, nothing else.

Software like K-Lite Codec pack will work fine as in I can change the installation location, but other software wont work :/

I do have mapped network drives if it makes any difference.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hello
I have an HP pavillion desktop (s5360f) with Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Module and D-Link router DIR-615. My numerous Laptops and iPhons / iPads work fine, but this desktop which is further away from the router (in another room, about 20 meters) only shows 1-2 bars of wifi. First I bought a big additional D-Link antenna (7Ghz) but it didn't really help - sometimes connction shows 3 bars. I was told this antenna should help a lot. Then I checked with my router settings and saw that the HP uses "g" connection when everything else uses "n". I even set it to only use "n" but still it shows the HP using "g". I updated the driver (Atheros 9.2.0.113 for AR5B91), but it didn't help. I have "n" enabled in Atheros in Device manager.
Now I'm lost and can't think of anything else that can be a problem and / or how to fix it... I don't have any thick walls between the router and the HP, my iPhone seems to work in this room just fine...
Please help!
THANK YOU!

Whenever I try to open a file with a program such as Winamp, the programs now "arranges the icons" in some funky random arrangement instead of arranging them by name (or by type, or modified) or whichever order I had preset. When I tell it to "arrange icons by" name or whatever other options, it arranges them....until I try to open something else. Then it's back to the funky random arrangement.

This only happens when trying to access a file from a different program. When I access the folder through Windows, it remembers the arrangement perfectly. Any clue as to what's going on here?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I had an issue with the general user folder name, which was shown as "Alex_000".
Although this was a cosmetic issue only, I wanted to change this to "Alex".
I successfully managed this by changing about 50 entries in the registry (via regedit).

So fine so good.

Now I found out that there are still some leftovers with "Alex_000" in the Windows system, although I have tried to find every bit and peace, where possible:

When I try to open "Add or Remove Programs" in the Metro surface, I get an error message:

Windows cannot find

'C:\Users\alex_000...\Classic_{a lot of weird numbers and chars}.settingscontent-ms'.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

From another forum topic, i also tried this command via Metro and RUN to see, if the Remove service has a general problem:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Windows\System32\appwiz.cpl",Add or Remove Programs
--> With this, i can open the Remove service without a problem.

Somewhere in the system, there must still be the Alex_000 info hidden.

How can i find this? (Tried the registry, tried a simple search on C: disc, but without success)

How can I solve this?

Thanks a lot!

Alex

A:"Add or Remove Programs" doesn´t work anymore (in Metro)

The obvious answer is to change it all back to Alex_000. Renaming a system folder doesn't usually go well.

We've having problems getting the "Out of the Office" function to work. Well, it works just fine internally, but if someone outside our company sends any of our users that has "out of the office" function enabled an email he/she won't recieve the OOTO message.. It works just fine internally (ie I send a mail to another colleague that is away).

Could it be some setting on the Exchange server I've not discovered/I've overlooked?
