Preferred Solution: portable external HD work as good as non-portable?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My wife needs an mp3 player so that she can listen to Nursing teachings all day. Each file is about 40 minutes long which is a problem when the mp3 player I bought doesn't remember where it left off.

The player I bought was by Craig from Toys R Us. My advice: don't buy Craig devices! They're junk!

There are three things I absolutely need when buying this mp3 player:
1. Good price.

2. MUST remember where it left off, even when battery removed.
The Craig player didn't even remember where it left off when it was stopped! And if you didn't stop it, just leaving it paused, it killed the battery in 1 day!

3. Good battery life.

The Craig player didn't have any of those things. Please help me buy a good mp3 player.

Some software publishers or authors offer both portable and installable versions of their products. (Kee Pass is one of them.)

Is it advisable to systematically prefer the portable version, when running it from a fixed drive and not a thumb drive, according to the logic that if it's possible not to write into the registry, it's better not to ?

I often try new software, and I'm concerned about long-term stability. I install and uninstall a lot, using Revo Uninstaller Pro. But I've come accross people advising not to use Revo or other fancy uninstallers, just to stick to the product's own uninstaller or the Windows function.

Also, I have set C-Cleaner to a daily auto-run. In the past, I used its registry cleaner quite regularly. But some people say it's better not to clean the registry at all.

So I figured the more applications could stay away from the registry, the better. Is this a correct assumption ? Are there any drawbacks to portable apps ?

A:Are portable apps preferable, even for non-portable use ?

HI
I have been using a lot of cleaning softwares too . Registry as well as junk cleaners.
Registry cleaner to me is a good thing as it removes the useless leftovers of programs that are left by their regular un-installer or some deleted files.

ANS1 > I recommended to clean registry as it improves performance and reduce junk in resgitry . So if portables apps dnt have or create these junks in registry then ur assumption is right and i m at your side too because " u dont need to re-install every software when u replace OS as it will work as it is if its PORTABLE "

ANS2 > Portable softwares are better then installed ones .

Above are the answer given as a user , i have used many portable softwares never had any issue just benefits

Hi, I recently bought a Lenovo Y700-15ISK. I'm really satisfied with the product, until I started bringing it to school. Since the laptop is pretty heavy itself, I assume that it probably takes a lot of heat/pressure while walking around on campus. I bought this laptop at the end of March 2016 (still under 1-year warranty), and I didn't see this defect until school started in August. I noticed that the screen started developing yellow-ish tinted spots near the edges of the screen. So I did some research on the internet and found out that its a form of LED damage caused either by heat or pressure. The spots don't appear in the beginning of each usage but comes back once the laptop starts heating up. Whenever I massage the area, the spots seem to fade but only for a short amount of time. The yellow spots are particularly very noticeable in a black and white image as the yellow tint is the only source of color. I stopped bringing my laptop to school hoping the stains would go away to no avail. Questions: Is this a valid reason for me to use my warranty and return the product? If so... I bought this laptop brand new off Amazon. Would Lenovo's 1-year warranty still hold? How would the process work? (where to send, who to contact) If you've had this problem and know how to solve it feel free to tell me! Thanks

I'd like to buy a second backup drive, since our Seagate is nearly 3 years old, but I need it to be somewhere around the $30 range. All of the ones I find though seem to have 1TB of storage (I haven't managed to fill our 500GB SeaGate with 3 different computers, and now we only have 2!), and I am not convinced I really need that much room, plus they are out of the budget. I do like the dashboard that came with our old drive, so would prefer one that has some sort of backup software.

Any brand or spec recommendations that would come in at my budget?

Right now there are several good deals for portable harddrives: Western Digital's Passport, Seagate's FreeAgent Go, and Maxtor's One Touch Mini.

I don't have a clue as to reliability and dependability of these portables. I have also read that external HDs can run hot and that Seagate offerings are more solidly built, but as with anything hardware there are bias' galore.

Objective advice and suggestions please. Thanks.

A:Need Advice on Portable External HDs

If you get one with a notebook drive (those smaller ones, USB powered), then it will not run hot.

As for reliability and dependability.. It is as bad as with any other hard drive. Always consider that the thing can fail tomorrow and take all your data with it - make backups of your precious data.

Hi all

I have got an external 80 GB drive that connects to my computer via usb, it currently has 2 cables comming from it, one usb cable and then a power cable which plugs in to another usb socket on the computer to provide more power.

is the power cable needed? usb ports on my laptop are in short supply so freeing a port up would be great but i don't want to damage the HDD.

Cheers

Anyway i had an idea to plug this portable hd into my XP desktop, the hd opened and i could play all the movies with no problems, this is baffling me, can anybody explain why this happened.....thanks.

The USB port on your laptop may not be providing enough power to the disk for it to power up properly. See if you have a mains supply or a second USB power for the disk. Running your laptop from the mains might work

I have a couple different portable external Hdd's. I have a kill-a-watt device which is a meter you plug into an outlet and into which you plug an electrical device to see what the device's power usage is. I'd like to see how much energy these hard drives are using while they spin. These drives have a single port that you plug into the computer. They are powered through the same USB connection which transfers data. Can I plug the drives directly into a USB "wall wart" power supply (such as the one that charges my phone) , which is plugged into the kill-a-watt, without harming the drive? Thanks!!

I am considering purchasing a WD 1 terabyte USB 3.0 portable hard drive - $60.00. My computer has two USB 3.0 ports so this should work fine for my use and I should get about 5 Gbps transfere rates. But my question is this, if I take this portable USB 3.0 hard drive and plug it into some other PC that only has USB 2.0 ports will it work? I realize the transfer rate would revert to the speed of the 2.0 port but will it work at all?

Now I do it manually, the other usb disk, in a way which is quite useful, but quite inefficient and laborious. Mainly because data size of about 400GB. These are photos, xls files, documents, drawings. Simply files that I am continuously working on them. I tried more online or other backup solutions, not suit me. After some time they wasn't updated and controllable as multiple versions of the same file. It can be done differently? Is there any sw which when run can compare two different usb hdds on the base of existing database and update the second hdd by the first one? This means only the changed files updated by more recent data (differential or incremental backup). Parameters: no resident program, ease of use. I would be grateful to receive advice from Forum members with regards to a portable external USB drive for a Laptop. Capacity needs to be 250GB.

My research to date has revealed the following: -

1. Western Digital My Passport. Most popular external HDD but has received many bad reviews for the Sync Software that installs itself automatically when you connect the drive for the first time. The Sync Software was written by a 3rd-party vendor and is not supported by Western Digital.

2. Buffalo Mini Station. Good reviews on the hardware but terrible reviews on the software and support. Expensive per GB.

3. Seagate Free Agent. Reviews say that it is reliable but very slow.

4. Western Digital Elements. Very expensive per GB. Slow.

5. Freecom Mobile Drive. Best reviews of any product but very, very expensive per GB.

6. Freecom ToughDrive. Good reviews but has a history of failing.

Thanks for your feedback.

Not sure if I goofed during purchase or if the just arrived Dell Inspiron 7000 normally comes without a CD/DVD drive. Nonetheless, I need to purchase a USB/external unit for those instances when needed.

I don't know which manufacturers are best and which to stay away from and what should be considered an acceptable transfer speed. The device will be used 99% for program install, infrequent archiving, reading other's data. Blu-ray is unnecessary.

It'd be great (I know my wife would appreciate it) if the device was available in aluminum to match the laptop.

A:Portable external hardrive backup

You can use the external just to back up files and folders by dragging and dropping, but by just backing up your files and folders you are not getting the best benefits of having an external hard drive. You may want to read this "sticky" regarding making backups.

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/827327-making-backups.html

I use Acronis True Image and make a weekly backup of my complete system when I know the machine is operating well with no problems. If I have a hard drive failure, I can install a new drive, recover my complete system to the new drive in just a matter of minutes rather than hours. I always keep the last 2 images I made on the external so if there is a problem with an image, I have a backup image that may be a little older, but I would lose very little data. On thing I do that I consider very important is after I make the image with Acronis I then validate and verify that the image is good.

There is a shorter method you can use with Acronis to make backups, just by making an incremental backup of the data that has changed since the previous backup. This works well, but since I am not in a big rush to make a backup (I let Acronis make the backup while I am doing things on another machine) I just opt to make a new, fresh backup.

Since most of the files and folders that I consider really important are in "My Documents" I also make a backup of just the "My Documents" folder to another external hard drive. This gives me 3 copies... Read more

Anyone thats owned a portable external Hard drive knows that the first component to go out...is ALWAYS the enclosure-side cable receptacle. First it gets finicky, then you start needing the wriggle it, then you have to hold the connector to one side or the connection drops... and soon it doesn't work at all.

I've had 20+ different enclosures, and I know of at least 3 that don't have an enclosure-side connector receptacle.... The EAGLE ET-CS2PESU2-BK (which has a cloth covered built in cable that wraps around the enclosure and tucks into a small hole), TheEAGLE ET-CS2BSU2-BK (which has a strap-like cable that snaps into a holster like a buckle when not in use... very good enclosure btw)... and the StarTech.com 2.5in
which has a built in cable, but nothing special.. never used that one.
Im looking for an external enclosure (preferably) with a Flip-Out USB port Like This, like a Sony Bloggie Camera.... that, or any other recommended enclosures with built in cables,....

A:external hard drive desktop vs portable

For general information,a desktop external 3.5" type drive
is bigger and requires the use of external AC power.
A portable 2.5" external drive is smaller and uses a second
USB port to power the drive.
It doesn't need AC power.
Drive letter assignments can change when plugging drives
into different USB ports.
That can cause programs on the drive to malfunction.
It would be better to install the programs on the laptop
and keep the files they generate on the external as you
can usually change the location in the program preferences
as needed.
If it is a standalone program that runs without having to be
installed, then it could be put on the drive.
There are a lot of portable applications out there made
specifically for portable drives and flash drives.

Hi,
what is the "best" solution for a "portable" win7 work environment?

problem:
i need to do some work on my home and my office pc and use of some professional highend graphics applications (not just checking emails or transferring docs)

- I guess using a VM would probably be a problem because of the GPU
- some time ago i read about some remote access solutions... are those usable in a way so that it really feels like you are on the remote machine or is there still a bad lag and other issues involved?
- is there already a REAL portable solution available? for example installing everything on a fast portable drive and boot directly from this drive on different hardware?
- any other ideas?

thanks for any suggestions.... and like i mentioned before, the challange is that i need to use some highend applications and do fast and precise mouse movements. so if it's a remote solution it's got to be very accurate.

A:Portable Work Environment

Have a look at Team Viewer. I use it on Video Editing HD videos but you probably mean higher end than that. I find the mouse to be as fast and as accurate when remote working as normal working. The program is free for personal use. You need a licence for commercial use but I think the definition of "commercial use" is when you give remote support to others for a fee!
Worth having a look at though, you can download it from here:
TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet

I keep most on my user data on an external USB (IDE) drive, currently with a FAT32 partition.

I plan to convert it to NTFS, and my main concern is with the ACL. I move the drive between 2-3 different XP machines with different user accounts, and I want to make sure that all files are always accessible to everyone, regardless of what computer I connect it to. On my own computer, I want them to appear under My Documents. Also, if my system crashes, I want to avoid the hazard of not being able to access My Documents if the user accounts crash.

How do I set the ACL in Win7 and XP Pro SP3 to achieve the maximum portability as per above?

Don't want to buy an expensive external optical drive so am trying to think of how to make a SATA or IDE internal optical drive into an external one for emergencies.

Anyone know if I can get adaptors for the power and data connections?

Have Googled but no luck.

Oops found some build ideas on Youtube - should have looked there first I suppose

I had a WD external power drive fail on my about a month ago. I bought a new hard drive and wanted to transfer some file to it from the EasyStore WD hard drive. When i plugged it in I cannot access it. The same is true for another EasyStore drive i have. So I have been unable to use the main external, and now both EasyStore drives. All Western Digital.
See pic for image:
Also I ran a WD Drive Utilities, full test, and it gave me a green light. So it says the drive is OK.
Another thing, I plugged one of the EasyStores into my Netgear R6100 router, it acts as a DNLA if you do that. Through this interface I was able to read some files on one of the disks.

Do you think the problem may be with my computer being able to read the drive, instead of with the drive itself.

The External, cord powered drive, that went bad, would not spin the disk. I am pretty sure it was broken, it was also old, well over 2 years, probably more like 5 years.
The EasyStore drives however are powered by USB ports, they are not plugged in all the time. The most heavily used drive may have been used for 2 weeks straight and then also plugged into create images of my computer. So it is nowhere near being worn out. The other EasyStore was only used for backups. So it may have 100 hours on it.
It seems unlikely that the EasyStores should be malfunctioning.

What do you think?

Another thing:
I just upgraded my computer to the 8350 chip. I have accessed the EasyStore since that happened, so atleast one of the ... Read more

Hi There,

I have to work with high mobility in different locations. Instead of carrying my laptop with me, I am now experimenting to use the portable applications like firefox. My solution is to put those portable applications and other frequently use files in an external 40G hard disk. And I plug in the external HDD to the computer facility I have access to.

Still there are many window applications like Dreamweaver and other window version applications I would like to use wherever I want.

Is there any solution outside there I can access to these window applications in my external HDD? Any OS I can install on my external HDD such that I can install my window applications on it and I can carry it with me all the time?

And I have difficulty to keep update my data in my home computer and my external HDD unless I sync the data on a daily basis. If I centralize the data in my home computer, how can I access them via internet seamlessly?

I am getting crazy, pls help!

Cheers
Frank

While I was backing up Window's Vista the other night to my external hard drive, my flatmate disconnected the hard drive accidentally. Now I can't access the hard drive.

When I plug the hard drive into the USB port on any computer, I hear the USB device connected sound windows plays, the installing your hardware bubble pops up and then says the hard drive is installed properly but I can't see the hard drive under Windows Explorer. When connected the Hard drive makes an odd noise like it's trying to read the hard disk but it can't.

All my University work, songs, and personal work are on this hard drive and I have no way of accessing it.

Can anyone help me/walk me through how to recover all this information?

If you need anymore info, please ask and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Cheers,

Rob

I recently upgraded to windows 7 from vista about 2 months ago. Everthing was working fine, apart from a few compatabilty issues with my printer and speakers. Both my portable hardrives, the one mentioned about and another 160 gig HD totaly in working order.

However when I moved house and did not have the internet for a few weeks they both stopped working on windows 7. When I got the internet back I tried installing new drivers/looking for help online but in the end put it down to windows 7 teething issues.

I then installed my old OS (Vista 64) dual boot with 7 so I could use them untill windows 7 caught up with updates. I managed to get the newer 160gig harddrive working with little problems however the older segate failed to work.

Its difficult to get it to recognize, I uninstalled an reisntalled the drivers many times. It comes up in Device manager under the USB controller and as a disk drive. It also appears in Disk Management, however it comes up as unallocated space and an unknown drive. And seems to need to be intialised (seen below), but it alredy was.

I really do not want to loose the data on this drive, any ideas how I can get it working again? Would rather not go down the remove it from the casing and install it in the PC route unless I really have too.

Can you tell me - seeing your picture is too small to expand and read - does it say the drive is offline in the left column, and could you please post back a viewable picture, so we can see for ourselves, and please fill out your system specs. You can use paint to save it as a jpeg.
I'll upload one to see if it works

Would any of you please tell me exactly how to manage Flashgot (it's a firefox add-on/extension for download managers) so it will properly detect my portable download-manager applications?

In Flshgot-Options window:
I've tried to manually select & add the location of my portable download manager to the list of executables (list of available Download Managers on my machine) to detect when I want to download files:

When I add a portable download managers-program to that list, Flashgot brings up a window with a box that has "[URL]" in it. I don't know what I should do with that. So I just click OK, and move on.

Flashgot will detect my portable download managers, but whenever I click on a download-link, Flashgot has some sort of problem transferring the download-job to my portable application.

Please try Flashgot with a portable-download manager & tell me if it works well for you. I know it works with non-portable download manager-programs.

Code:
