Display Brightness key stopped working

Q: Display Brightness key stopped working

Hi everyone,
About a week ago, my laptop's brightness key stopped working.
It's not a hardware problem because if I try changing it from control panel I fail. Brightness icon disappeared into windows 10 home x64 1151 as well as control center.
I tried reinstalling both Intel and Nvidia drivers.
the machine is an Acer E5-571G-50NS upgraded to Windows 10 about a year ago.
Thanks in advance,
cheers!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When you say you 'fail' changing brightness in the control panel do you get an error message, what do you mean?

Is your PC fully up to date with Windows Update?

The dispaly brightness buttons on my Elitebook 1040 G2 (F9, F10) stopped working, perhaps with an update but not sure.  I have installed the latest Windows updates and graphics driver, run scannow, DISM, to no avail.  Anybody have a suggestion? OK, I solved it.  I installed the latest HotKey support drivers, which I saw suggested in a recent thread for a different model, and that fixed the issue.

The brightness control keys (f2 & f3) on my pavillion dm4 stopped working all of a sudden. I'm operating windows 7 64bit. I've tried reverting to previous system restore points. I've also installed the BIOS, Intel chipset, and graphics drivers. All the other function keys are working properly, just can't change the brightness. Right now it's stuck on the brightest setting.I hope someone can point me in the right direction to solve this issue, I'm getting terrible eye strain from the screen. Thanks

Hi, Try the following. Download the Intel HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp68001-68500/sp68117.exe When done, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the link below. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp73501-74000/sp73543.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, do not restart as prompted, instead open your Downloads folder, right click the Intel Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hey guys, so I upgraded to Windows 10 which caused the computer to automatically update my drivers and what not on July 29th, and here I am with a brightness adjustment that does not work whatsoever. Pretty much, whenever I press the less/more brightness buttons on my keyboard, the display will show the brightness gauge going up/down but the actual screen brightness remains constant. Yet, when I roll back the driver it manages to allow my brightness adjustment to function again, but my second monitor will not connect even though it is plugged in via HDMI. Obviously attempting to get my old Windows 8 driver will do me no good since this laptop is no longer a Windows 8. I'm pretty stumped here, especially since I'm not the best with the complex side of computers, I'd just like my brightness adjustment to work again while maintaining/keeping everything else Thank you in advance for your help

I'm going to ask a few questions to help get acquainted with the issue and your hardware;

1: What OS are you running?
2: Do you know what make/model video card you have?
3: Does your video card have a DVI (White, rectangular connector) output?
4: How many outputs does your video card have in total?

Ive been using an external monitor along side my winxp HP laptop for months via a VGA cord. I decided to connect my tv to my laptop using the same VGA cable and it didnt work. so i plugged it back into my laptop and that no longer worked as well!
took 30 seconds for my monitor to become useless.
Ive bought two other VGA cables thinking maybe my tv fried the cable, but still nothing works.

i don't think its drivers because it worked fine one minute and didn't the next. No signal is going to the monitor at all. no sign of the monitor even being connected.
anything i can do? Thanksssss.

A:2nd display monitor stopped working?

It sounds that more than likely the VGA port going out from the laptop was switched off during one of the changes. Most laptops now have a shortcut to turn this port on (since I believe it is off by default to save power) For example, mine is Fn+F5. What kind of laptop you have will determine this shortcut key. What is the model of the HP laptop are you using?

There might also be something wrong with the monitor though that is very unlikely. Does the monitor power on still and simply go into standby due to no signal? If the monitor has multiple inputs, it could be trying to find a signal from one of the other inputs. There should be a menu option to make sure the monitor is on VGA.

This is likely what was wrong with the TV as well, either it was looking at the wrong input or your laptop wasn't giving the proper output.

Hope this helps.

After 2-3 seconds it will resume and in the bottom right it displays something along the lines of "AMD display card stopped working and has recovered". A few times I've even got the VIDEO_SCHEDUALER_INTERNAL_ERROR on the BSOD.

I checked and the drivers are up to date. Any suggestions?

A:AMD Display Driver Has Stopped Working

Hi there,

have you had these issues all the time? Or did they just start happening after a driver update from AMD? It's not always wise to update the videocard drivers. Sometimes newer versions introduce new issues.

I for instance also have an AMD videocard. All drivers newer then 13.1 result in a crash in 40% of the time I close Internet Explorer.

So, what I'm trying to say is. Try to downgrade your AMD drivers to the latest version where you didn't have this issue.

Good luck with it!

Firstly, my Nvidia GTX560 got this problem since my friend made my PC. It used to get the error (NVIDIA windows kernel modedriver <driver version> has stopped working but recovered). I tried updating drivers and it didn't work. I then changed to windows 8 and still got the error but also getting the error 'dxgi error device removed/hung' (see my other posts). I then swapped my graphics card with my friend if it solved the problem. He had an amd radeon and I still got the error 'amd display driver has stopped working but successfully recovered' but this time when crashing, sometimes my display goes off as if it is disconnected (but it is connected). When crashing it has a buzzing noise and sometimes has a distorted blue screen. Could anyone please help as I have been getting so many errors on my PC constantly? Thanks a lot! So there seems to be at least some issues with the videocard driver. Have you tried installing the latest drivers for you motherboard aswell as the videocard?

You might also want to check for any updates for Photoshop.

Please try this and post back the results if the error still continues to bug you.

Hello guys. I'm having the error on the title randomly when running any game... It was somewhat constant on Titan Quest, happened once on MOH: Airborne and never happened on bioshock or ET:QW

Today I was playing Counter Strike: Source with Bots. all running normally. I would start a server with 30 bots, but by the time the bots would appear on the map, I had the error again. The screen goes black, returns to the game with rendering failures, goes black again and I need to close the game.

But last night it went really bad. It started showing strange colours in the screen and sometimes it was all over the screen and i had to wait for it to go. And then it suddenly went all blurry. So I quit the game and went onto my desktop. And it still was blurry (It's not my eyes) But it wasn't the usual blur. The computer had taken a small square and swapped it with the one next to it. and in the corner the usual "Display driver has stopped working and recovered.". I recently had to re-instal Windows (Vista) because of a startup failure. so when I had re-insalled it I re-installed all of the drivers. But I've obviously left something out. Go to AMD/ATI's support website and download and install the latest video driver for your video card. Make sure that you have all the current Vista updates from Microsoft, including Service Pack 1

At random times my screen will go black then it will come back on soon after and I will get a little bubble coming from the taskbar saying "Display driver igfx has stopped working but has recovered" or something like that.

I google'd it but most of the results seem to relate to World of Warcraft. I do not play or have World of Warcraft installed.

perfmon report attached.

A:Display driver igfx stopped working

"igfx" is your Intel video driver. Update the Intel chipset drivers.

However, PERFMON reports that you are experiencing excessive paging, because only 78 MB RAM is available. You have 1 GB installed physical RAM; Vista really needs 2 GB minimum. I would suspect that the video is going out because there is not enough RAM for your video to function. Paging can only do so much.

I wonder if I can post this here, but I've been having problems with the ATI drivers for my HD Radeon 5770, 1GB, XFX XXX version. I had just recently wiped the computer due to the problems in an effort to locate the issue, reinstalling Win 7 and prior programs, then making a system image and repair disc just before putting two things back on it: MS Office 2007--an update that never seems to update for it I thought was the problem, but it wasn't, and the new ATI drivers (10.2 to 10.4 were messing up my display).

I keep getting the "(AMD) Display driver has stopped working and has recovered", after the monitor getting random flecks of whatever color, then the screen going entirely (insert solid color here) before giving that message. Sometimes it even freezes my computer and I'm forced to reset computer.

On the standard, generic drivers, everything was absolutely fine, but not on any of the ATI ones (even from the installation disc). I can't roll back the drivers to some previous version either.

The catch is that it only really does this when I'm doing anything else (writing an essay, watching youtube, watching House MD/some other video, chatting on AIM, surfing the web, just idle, etc.) other than gaming (Aion, WoW, Spore). It never does this when the game is running. In fact, it's absolutely fine.

Help please? D:

A:AMD - Display driver stopped working and has recovered

Having installed 7 fresh on an entirely new build with an MSI Radeon HD 5750 1gb model I never put the software disk in at all but went for the 10.4 right off the bat! There are no bugs with this latest Catalyst.

For simply removing the present version you have on now you simply run the setup all over but choose the uninstall option instead. Besides having drivers and the catalyst on things like Java, Adobe Flash Player, and other things haven't been installed on the fresh copy of Windows you have on now.
