"Recent Places" icon appears in desktop

Q: "Recent Places" icon appears in desktop

I was trying the "recent places" option in Windows Explorer when a "recent places" icon suddenly appears in the desktop. There's no delete option for it, even when I try to drop it in the recycle bin. However, when I personalize the desktop and disable and re-enable recycle bin icon, the "recent places" icon suddenly disappears.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Windows 7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan
Safe mode
Essentially, it seems that documents opened are recorded but not folders. I'm stumped at this point. Anyone know what's up with this?

Hello all,
I hope you can help me with my problem, I searched to no avail.
I use 'Recent Places' a lot in my work, you know when opening and saving files in photoshop or other apps, I use Recent Places to go to the folders I'm working on quickly.
Recently I noticed that Recent Places is not being updated with those folders anymore so I cleared the list hoping it will start working again, unfortunately it hasn't. It's still empty.
I have the two options enabled under Privacy in the Start Menu properties.
It's weird.
Please someone help.

I am frustrated that when using windows explorer, "recent places" is always empty--meaning that I have to always re-navigate through the entire file structure in order to find the folder I want. In spite of other problems I had when using Vista, this was one thing that always worked and that I found extremely helpful and efficient. Why does it not work in Windows 7, even though the tool is included in the options list? It's _always_ empty. I have tried looking through various fora for a fix for this, but without success. Help! Tried everything I can think of... cancelling and resetting the folder to share, adding another folder..., nothing.
Why doesn't my the shared folder appear in the "My Network Places" folder? Any suggestions?

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

This is a question for information about why my networking problem finally was resolved.
I have four PC?s on my network; one Windows 7 and three Windows XP. The Windows 7 PC always sees all three of the other computers. However the Windows XP computers sometimes don?t see the other XP computers when I press ?My Network Places.? Quite by accident I discovered that if I press ?View Workgroup Computers? then ALL the other PC?s in the network DO show up. Furthermore, if I click through "View Workgroup Computers" and access/edit a file on one of the other computers, then this computer will ALSO show up in ?My Network Places.? This behavior seems to be quite consistent and works every time I have tried it. Apparently, this is a workaround to the long vexing problem of why my networked PC?s sometimes don?t show up under ?My Network Places.?

My question: why does ?View Workgroup Computers? apparently always show all the networked PC?s, when ?My Network Places? does so only intermittently or sometimes not at all?

Thanks for any response.

This has been happening for the longest time, and is annoying if I need to get on the computer right away. The PC only has 1 user, so I never get a choice at the blue menu of a choice of users, which is fine. I searched all over the forums for anything, to no avail.

Hi all

Exactly the above. After doing work in a spreadsheet in Excel and closing it down i'll notice a file has been created on the desktop called "~".

I've attached the file. NB: it isn't usually a .txt file but i had to change it to upload it.

On opening it it opens in Notepad and looks like scrambled up data from this excel spreadsheet aforementioned (I can tell by the email addresses in it). What is this does anyone know?

Cheers

If not, then post a screenshot of regedit at these locations with all of the right pane showing. I'll see if something is in there that may be responsible.

The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

My OS is Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium.

Recently, via Windows updates, I accidentally DLed IE 9. After realizing the error, I went to Programs and Uninstalled IE 9. and now a back to IE 8.

Now, whenever I click on a Desktop shortcut icon to open any of the programs I ordinarily use, instead of the program opening, I get a screen that says: Open With, and then there follows a brief list of programs I have recently used.

This is driving me crazy!!! How do I get rid of the problem, and go back to opening programs in the usual manner [simply double clicking on the icon]?????

Thanks so much if you can help with this. This is so frustrating, and I will go completely mad if I can't get this fixed!

A:[SOLVED] "Open With" screen opens when I click on a desktop shortcut icon????

I had this aswell, my file association list was messed up and so i ended up having the hardest time of my life, the simple answer to this is a file association changing reg.edit file which i ll start work on for you unless some1 else can get it done faster
so dont worry also it may be possible that most of your program's standard openers have been forgotten so next time it says open with then you should choose browse, or set the real program as default

Hope you can help me with this issue that im having. Im using Aspire 3610 portable. Ive recently noticed this weird looking icon that is in my program files that has "no name" but it only point outs to "Desktop" so I tried removing it suspecting that I might have just added it by mistake but it keeps coming back. that happened just when I installed Adobe photoshop CS from my backup disc so tried uninstalling the program thinking that it might be corrupted or something still no go the icon still present. so format the NB using the recovery console from the NB itself reinstalled all security including my AV Nod32(updated), Ad-Aware, Spybot SD and Hijackthis which did not detect anything so everything seems working fine since I installed Cyberlink power DVD. So went looking for the shortcut in the prog files but to no avail the "icon" still there... so back to the same issue all over tried deleting it still doing the same stuff which comes back after. tried uninstalling the program still the same. Ive read a thread here which basically is the same but he was having problems with Real player. Since I dont have real player in my system I guess its not the SW itself whose having the issues...I guess?? Any help would be appreciated...

I just uninstalled language packs for Office 2007
After uninstalling I have this icon on my desktop: "Microsoft OneNote Namespace Extension for Windows Desktop Search" Right clicking the icon I only have the options to Cut, Create Shortcut, and Delete.
When I delete the file it isn't actually removed (refreshing the desktop it comes right back).
It's really bothering me!
Please help me.
Thanks

For some reason a desktop icon keeps appearing on my desktop (with only a title of "blank")....sometimes on startup, sometimes on reboots, sometimes after recovery from standby status.....in other words, I can't detect any regular pattern as to when this icon will appear. I delete it each time it appears, but it's starting to get annoying...hah !

If anyone knows why this is icon incident is occurring and how I can eliminate it, I would deeply appreciate it.

Thanks muchly,

H.W. Dick Hannam

A:Remove system "Favorites" desktop icon

I'm not really sure what this means.
How to: Remove system "Favorites" icon from Windows 7 desktop. What is a system Favorites icon? When you left click on this icon what opens?
If you have installed a icon on your desktop and no longer want it just drag and drop to recycle bin. This works most of the time. You can also right click on it and go to delete, this also works most of the time. Get back and let us know how thing are going.

Hi -- I'm running Windows XP/2nd SP with IE Explorer 6 (updated to 2nd SP). Somehow, my "show desktop" shortcut got corrupted and wouldn't work, and I now have a two-fold problem.

First, I can't figure out how to recreate it (it's also not in my START line-up). I tried to follow directions in Microsoft Article ID: 190355, and created the text file okay, but when I went to save it as: WINDOWS\System32\Config\Systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch couldn't find that within System Profile (where the article told me to save it), couldn't find or get past the portion highlighted in red above.

Second, when i tried to drag the icon I had successfully created onto the taskbar, it became a cyan colored word on the cobalt blue background of the Taskbar, and I can't get rid of it/nor does it seem to serve any function.

How can I resolve these issues, please.

TIA for your help,

Iris

Is it possible to install on my Desktop an Icon to launch Tech Support Guy?
I have been accessing it by going to my "Saved Items" folder where I placed the original E-mail from you. I'm sure there must be an easier way to do this.
