T460 scrolling issues with trackpoint and ultranav...

Q: T460 scrolling issues with trackpoint and ultranav...

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button. Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat. In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page. Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines. Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello there, I have an issue with UltraNav TrackPoint while trying to scroll using the middle button. It seems Windows 10 are ignoring the middle button completely. Ive tryied the solution I found here with the registry, but with no luck. I  remember the scrolling worked only for like two days after I purchased this repassed X230 tablet. After all the automatic Windows updates it stopped working. I tried uninstalling the driver and downloading fresh lenovo new one, but nothing... can someone here please help me? This issue is really annoying, otherwise I love the X230 tablet!

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

This topic has been an ongoing problem with the Driver, etc., etc., etc. for 10 years + or -. I have four X120e Thinkpads with Windows 10 v1909 installed on each one. They appear to have almost exactly the same Synaptics software installed. They definitely show exactly the same devices in Device Manager and yet two of the Thinkpads have the UltraNav tab  on the Control Panel/Mouse control and two of them do not have the tab. I have been chasing old posts (such as 2011, 2015, etc. for more than two days now with no working solution. Can anyone please help me out?

Dear all, My TrackPoint/UltraNav's sensitivity is reduced after rebooting and jumps back to maximum (what I set it to) whenever I access the additional mouse options - don't need to switch to the ThinkPad tab, just opening the menu suddenly increases the sensitivity back to normal. Hi all, I'm running into any issue with my Lenovo T470 20HD where the 3 Trackpoint buttons (Left, Middle, Right) are all performing the same action (Scroll and Right-Click). As one can imagine, this is very frustrating! I simply want the Left button to function like a left-click and the Right to function like a right-click; normal behavior.  The picture below shows the buttons I am referring to:           I have checked my UltraNav settings under the mouse properties, however I only have 2 options: Right-Click and Scroll. I have tried uninstalling and removing the driver. Reinstalling from Lenovo's website, with no luck. I have also update the BIOS to the latest version. I tried disabling and re-enabling TrackPoint in the BIOS with no luck.             I am running the latest version of Windows:    Any help would be apprecaited!

I wasted a frustrating 40 minutes with Lenovo tech support trying to elicit answers to these simple questions. Trackpoint Historically, Linux support for Trackpoints has been hit or miss. Consider these two FRU IDs: 40K9400 is pre-Lenovo IBM USB keyboard with Ultranav (pad and Trackpoint). It is essentially impossible to change the Trackpoint sensitivity in Linux. It just shows up as a (very stiff) PS2 mouse. 55Y9003 (using it now) is a Lenovo USB keyboard with only Trackpoint. When plugged in, shows a "sensitivity" file on sysfs, where you can write 255 to get a good pliable mouse. On my current keyboard the path is /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/usb2/2-2/2-2:1.1/0003:17EF:6009.0056/sensitivity (will change after each USB plugin). Without the sensitivity tweak, Trackpoints are terrible in Linux, as bad as the pathetic lookalikes on HP and Dell and Toshiba laptops. A lot of people buy Thinkpads for Trackpoint and Linux. Lenovo should publish details of Trackpoint chipset and how to reliably control sensitivity from Linux. I tested the first Trackpoint before it was released to market, and contributed code to a Linux trackpoint driver, so I feel strongly about this. Take away the Trackpoint in Linux and there's no good reason for me to choose T460 over MBP15.  Storage options Apparently T460s has a full-length mSATA connector on the motherboard, but no 2.5 inch HDD/SSD bay. I just want to report that the newest touchpad driver brakes native windows middle-click scrolling. What I'm talking is this:1. Swich off all advanced features in the TouchPoint setting to get back a middle button. BTW, how on earth it is possible that the default setting "steals" the middle button. Going for the Nr. 1. PC maker and forgetting a stupid default settings in a Synaptics driver is a joke.  2. Now, try scrolling in any native windows application like Chrome, Firefox, etc. The quick way of scrolling is to push the middle button while scrolling. It had always worked before.Now this way is broken.Now, the only way for scrolling is to the:1. push middle button to enter scolling mode2. move mouse3. push again to exit scrolling mode This scolling mode has never been a good way to scroll, but the quick way is broken with the latest driver. I'm using a W520 with Windows 7, 64-bit. Broken driver: Version 16.2.5.0

I have a similar problem as the OP: after today's update, my Touchpad is not functioning properly anymore. Scrolling of any sort on the Touchpad seems to have been disabled. As I do not have a mouse attached, I am forced to use the Trackpoint set's middle button and then move my cursor around to scroll. I checked my Control Panel settings and both two-finger and single-finger Touchpad scrolling are enabled via the settings. Also I don't know if this is relevant, but it seems like the option to double-tap to bring up Lenovo SimpleTap has also randomly been disabled... W530, Windows 7 x64.

Hi guys,my X250 laptop just got a factory repair, in wich they reset the whole system. Now I have a problem: When I try to scroll using my trackpoint and the scrolling button, it only works in some instances. I can scroll on websites in Firefox, but in lists it doesn't work anymore. Lists like my settings or the file explorer. That is pretty annoying. I guess it has something to do with the mouse being on a linked item. As the problem also appears in Firefox as long as my curser is over a clickable item wich contains a link. On items that are clickable, but don't "contain a link" in the sense that by right clicking it gives me options like "open link in another tab", scrolling still seems to work. That theory kind of contradicts that, in the file explorer, it doesn't seem to make any difference wether or not the curser is over something clickable or not. I think I have another clue: I am not sure about this, but I think the symbol that appears by the curser while using the scrolling key also changed. Advice would be greatly appreciated,David

One of the more persistent (of several) problems plaguing my P50 (20EN) is the spastic, herky-jerky scrolling when using the TrackPoint with middle button. This is far and away the worst trackpoint I have ever used, and I've used a lot of trackpoints over the last 20 years. There are only two TrackPoint settings on this machine, and neither is relevant to this issue:? The 'ThinkPad' tab in the Windows 10 'Mouse Properties' panel has a checkbox to enable and disable TrackPoint globally and radio buttons to select the middle button function.? The Synaptics Control Panel has a slider for controlling the TrackPoint scrolling speed. TrackPoint has always stood out on my list of reasons for buying ThinkPads in the first place, so this is issue particularly poignant for me, and, frankly, I'm close to my wit's end on this one. Please, someone tell me there exists a solution.

The settings for the Microsoft Precision Touchpad on my T470s include the option to reverse the normalling scrolling direction, called "natural scrolling".However, I do not see a similar option to do so for scrolling using the Trackpoint: I have gotten used to reverse-scrolling or "natural scrolling" thanks to my iOS devices, the option to reverse in Windows, and it messes with me when I have to think about it when using the Trackpoint. Is there a way to reverse the scrolling, perhaps via a registry key? Before Windows 10 introduced the feature for trackpads and mice, there was a way to enable reverse scrolling via scripting. I may have to try that for this. Should we ask Lenovo to include this optionin a driver update for Trackpoint devices?

A:Reverse scrolling direction when using Trackpoint

I can report that installing AutoHotkey and then using the following script: WheelUp::Send {WheelDown}ReturnWheelDown::Send {WheelUp}Return You can effectively reverse the scrolling direction on the Trackpoint. Install AutoHotkey and save the above as AutoHotkey.ahk in your Documents folder or where you install AutoHotkey. I would still prefer to have the option in the driver though.

When scrolling with the trackpoint, I find that the pages don't roll as smooth as the older Thinkpads did. My T410 scrolls much more smoothly than my X250, and I'm thinking that it is a driver issue. I have the latest Synaptics driver, which would be 18.1.27.14. I've tried rolling back the drivers, and it still doesn't improve the scrolling issue. Did anyone else experience this problem? Has anyone fixed it? Also, as an aside, I've found that I could not play FPS games with trackpoint. The left and right buttons don't click immediately after typing. I always get killed right after sprinting because I'm standing there, unable to shoot. Other than that, the trackpoint is suprisingly easy to use for games.

My question concerns middle-button-scrolling for the Trackpoint on the Yoga 260, which seems to use an Elantech device and driver. Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. Hi Lenovo, Currently the Trackpoint's middle button can only do either scrolling or middle mouse button click in Windows. This behavior can be set in lenovo vantage or mouse settings. Could you provide option to enable both scrolling and middle mouse click functions at same time? In linux this is already supported out of the box for a long time. The only workaround in windows is by using third party software called TPMiddle, but this software only works with Synaptics trackpoint, it doesn't work with Elan or ALPS trackpoint.

Yes, there was a post several years ago describing this same issue which was supposedly fixed with an update of the Synaptics driver.  However, I am seeing this issue again on my X270 Windows 10 x64 Pro with latest driver version 19.3.4.219. If I set the mouse pointer size to something larger than default "1" it stays at the larger size until I use the trackpoint middle button to scroll.  the pointer then shrinks back down to size "1".  Just as with the previous report of this issue if I set the middle button function to "click" rather than "scroll" the pointer retains its larger size.  I constantly use trackpoint scrolling so that is not really a fix for me. Has anyone else seen this issue recently and perhaps found a fix that allows continued use of trackpoint scrolling with a larger pointer? Thanks.

Thus far I failed to identify the circumstances in which the touchpad stops working. It seems to sometimes happen when it checks for an update. What is also curious that the cursor will sometimes mess up such that the text cursor will be displayed as the context menu cursor. Not sure if this is related. The touchpad works again after restart. Everything is up-to-date, running Windows 10 (1909). The TrackPoint is unaffected by this.

So the trackpoint on my T480s is having this really annoying drift. When I use it heavily and release my finger it drifts for a few seconds in one direction and then it stops. During these 5 seconds or so I'm completely unable to use the touchpad so it can get really annoying sometimes. Other issue I'm having is the middle trackpoint button (the one to scroll) requires more activation pressure than it should. Even after it "clicks" I still have to press it harder for it to actually register. Latest one is poor dim backlit. My T450s and my Macbook Pro have much, much brighter keyboard lightning.  My keyboard manufacturer is Chicony. I already requested a replacement from Lenovo, this new unit is also manufactured by Chicony and its experiencing the exact same issues.

I recently oredred a T460, and was immediately disapointed to see I had virical lines / grid going through my LCD when I first powered it on.   Over time the lines fade away.  Is this normal behavior is this a known defect in the display?   It is a really bad blemish on what is overall a top of the line computer. When I googled the issue I had several results from /r/thinkpad stating people had the same problems.   One example is this thread. In this thread two videos are post one with lines  and another one after some time when the lines fade away. Is this every T460?  Can someone confirm that they do not have the issue?   I recently called support and they consider my laptop DOA and I am going to get a replacment.  My worry is I will get stuck with the exact same issue on a replacment unit.  If that happens I will end up returning my unit completely, which is a heart breaker because the T460 is exactly what I want in a laptop computer.

I'm a big fan of Lenovo's/IBM's trackpoint, but on my new X1Y3 I'm struggling a bit.  Right after switching from presentation mode I can use the trackpoint just fine, but letting go after a short motion, the cursor often drifts in the opposite direction for six or seven very long seconds. In the end it stops, after which it usually works OK. Sometimes this happens twice in a row.  I an familiar with the built-in offset/drift correction. If you move the pointer in the same direction for a long time and let go, the pointer drifts in the opposite direction. That's normal, and a result of some auto-calibration going on, and it stops moving pretty quickly.  In this case though, the drift appears after very short motion, as if the initial drift offset is misinterpreted/miscalibrated, and it keeps going for way longer than I remember from prior ThinkPads. I hope this can be fixed, because I'm a perennial laptop/tablet mode switcher.

Hello, I have a T460 laptop with the FHD IPS (1920 x 1080) display that has windows 10 preinstalled. If I change the resolution lower then 1920x1080 the screen gets completely blurry. I'm also encountering scaling issues, As default it was set on 150%, The problem is that certain applications are blurry . The solution I found so far to fix that is to check the checkbox 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings' but that makes fonts, ... just way too small making the application very unpleasant to work with Changing the scaling to 100% fixes everything, but that makes everything too small I wonder if anyone else using tesame display is encountering these issues and what your solution is to this?

A:T460 Blurry display and scaling issues

I've got the same dpi (14" FHD screen). And I am developer by trade. The problem is the way Windows programs had been written. Programmers for years didn't have to worry about different dpi, most displays were about 96. So many of them used pixels and not logical units, so many Windows programs to this day have screen organized around fixed number of pixels. There's no quick fix other than look for programs developed with different dpi-s in mind. I.e. I used in the past Crimson Editor which was really nice but it didn't support higher dpi so found Notepad++. Unfortunately there are more complex programs with steep learning curve wich are not easy to switch (video editors, bloody Lightworks which was such a pain to learn, is still in 96 dpi world).

1. It doesnt like going into sleep or hybernate, 9-10 times it will jam and i have to hold the power button to turn it off then restart it. this happens if i let it reach the time its set to sleep aswell.
2. Whenever the first problem happens and it jams, it wipes all of the passwords and usernames from forums and login pages etc ?
3. Today the scroll part of the touchpad has stopped allowing it to scroll, it just moves the mouse around but wont scroll at all. ? i did a bit of research into it and some people say you can change the sensativity with the button that should be in the taskbar, but my button isnt there even when i tell it to show all the time ?

Sorry again if this is in the wrong section. just so much problems i havent a clue where to start. Maybe somone could shed some light on it. Hopfully its something i can do myself.
I have read about driver updates etc but i was a bit cautious to do that as i havent done it before.
Thanks in advance
Kimberly

Hi, My Trackpointer completely stops working afer the computer is turned on for about 20 minutes. The first 20-30 minutes it functions fine then it suddenly freezs and I have to reboot to get it working again. My Trackpad and any connected mouse works fine without any issues, it's only the pointer that freezes. All my drivers, Bios and Windows (10 Pro 64) are up to date. I have also tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling...nothing...still the same issue. Does anybody have the same problem and is there a solution? My Config is 4k Touch, 64GB RAM, 1Tb+ 512 SSD, Intel vpro  8750 Processor. Thanks.

Hi

In an ASP frame page, I currently use the following Javascript to use buttons to scroll up/down my main frame in another frame:

<FORM>
<INPUT TYPE="button" Value="Down"
onClick="parent.frames[1].scrollBy(0,100);">
</FORM>
<FORM>
<INPUT TYPE="button" Value=" Up "
onClick="parent.frames[1].scrollBy(0,-100);">
</FORM>
--
This seems to work, but on some of the pages I have that as the Main Frame, i have included IFRAMES (for example, to display a word doc, etc, but still maintain some colour scheme).
I need some way for these buttons to scroll down items in the iframe's scrollbar if there is one, but still be able to scroll the main window if there aren't (any page with an iframe does not have it's own scrollbar so the browser hasn't got 2 to contend with)

That's as clear as mud, isn't it!!

I would appreciate any help/suggestions, please!!!

The only way I can scroll is to hold the right button down on the vert slider and drag the curser. Release the button and scrolling stops. The right hand space on the touch pad doesn't scroll. Tried to change settings for the mouse but any attempt to change settings causes the window to stop responding. Message via task manager sez "windows common shell DII not responding". Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks. BTW I did search but didn't find anything applicable.

Did you you try uninstalling/reinstalling mice in device manager?

Make a system restore point first.

I too, am having scrolling issues - probably just after the recent update! Using Windows 7 home edition, and I have a wired old trackman trackball by Logitech and at first scrolling was affected in Firefox, but now scrolling is not working even in installed apps along with IOS functions (using win explorer to search for files, etc.)  I want to know HOW to fix this issue!!!

Hello there,

Initially let’s put the computer in clean boot and check.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Follow the steps below:

1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
2. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.
6. Check if you still have the issue.

Refer the link below for more details:

Well, I don't know what my brother did but after he used the computer I'm now having problems scrolling when I browse web pages.

The screen appears to lag as I bring it down instead of it being smooth. The page seems to be refreshing itself or something like that. I had this problem before & I remembered it was something to do with installing some graphic card programme or something like that but I forgot.

Help appreciated.

is your graphics card installed?
