Unable to access Task Manager - Error: Access is denied

Q: Unable to access Task Manager - Error: Access is denied

Hello I am unable to access my task manager on Windows 7 as administrator. Whenever I try to access it a Command window flashes on the screen quickly and that's it. Same thing happens when taskmgr.exe is clicked.

I was able to capture the command window error as the following:

C;\Users\<name>\Documents>REG and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System  /v  DisableTaskMgr  /t  REG_DWORD  /d  /0  /f
ERROR: Access is denied.

Any help with this would be appreciated. I have checked that TaskMgr is enabled in the registry, and have ran AVG and Malwarebytes and they didn't come up with anything.

Thanks again for any help on this one.

Preferred Solution: Unable to access Task Manager - Error: Access is denied

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to access Task Manager - Error: Access is denied

blue gravity,

Please confirm that the command that is attempting to execute is the following:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
This command is trying to enable task manager but the command prompt that is trying to enable task manager does not have the permissions to do that.

Please try the following:

Click Start
Type cmd
Right click cmd.exe
Select Run as administrator
type "REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f"
Press enter
Close cmd.exe
Log out
Log in
Try to open task manager

If this does not work, or you believe your computer might be infected, please follow the instructions found at Am I Infected, as I am not authorized to assist with the removal of malware.

Thank you,

I am experiencing a number of Reliability and Performance Logs, and Task Scheduling issues and difficulties.

In trying to troubleshoot the problems, I have started with the Task Manager, as it is clearly not performing at all.

First, before starting this process, I created a new Restore Point.

Then, at Start>Help and Support>Select, ?Troubleshooting>in Search Help box type, Troubleshoot Task Manager>Select, How do I enable Task Manager if it has been disabled. ....I end up with this set of troubleshooting instructions;

Using Administrator Rights, I am able to navigate down to Step 3 of the instructions,[see string in bottom panel] here;

Before going further, per the instructions, I saved a copy of the Registry Key to a hard-drive.

With that done, I tried to double click on System, but nothing happens! Disable TaskMgr does not come up to allow me to continue with the troubleshooting process.

So where to now? What are my options?

Hi Sassofalco,

I really hope that I can help, since you have given so much help to others. Based upon your description, do you think that you may have better results using the built in Hidden Administrator?

or even better

Try going to Control panel folder folders>view>uncheck hide hidden folders>uncheck hide protected system folders.

Try the second selection first
Then try hidden administrator

The try both together.

I really hope this works. I enjoyed reading your posts and learning from them.

If this doesn't work do not be too disappointed, I have only a 75% hunch that this will work and I rather not go to my registry to try it.

Hello:

When I start my computer McAfee opens with this message "The file c:\windows\system32\drivers\spools.exe is infected by the New Malware.j trojan and cannot be cleaned". I deleted the trojan, quarantined than deleted it, but nothing works. I've been getting this message along with an abundance of pop-ups since Sunday. Some days the desktop icons do not show up and now I am denied access to Task manager by the system administrator. I also keep getting pop-ups to clean "Malware" along with porn & everything website I would never want to visit. Can you please help me.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I did a quick search and didn't see any posts related to this issue. Apologizes if there is one and I missed it.

I have a problem that has just started. I cannot change the priority or end process using Task Manager or Process Explorer for Firefox and any Flash plugins that are running. I can end Firefox by using the Applications tab of Task Manager and there is no problem just quitting Firefox normally. I also have access to other processes (or the ones that I've checked). It's like Firefox and the Flash plugin are being locked by some other process. I have occasionally had a Flash process hang and have been able to kill it in Task Manager, as well or change priority for Firefox. Not now.

I am logged in as Administrator. I have a number of unneeded services stopped using msconfig, but I have not changed anything recently that I'm aware of.

I have tried:
Showing all users in Task Manager before trying to change the processes
Turning off the UAC in Control Panel.
I have run scans using the full version of MalwareBytes, as well as Spybot, MB AntiRootkit, and RogueKiller.
Running CCleaner including the registry function, and running AdwCleaner.
Checking for any Windows updates.
Checking for any Firefox updates.
I removed a couple of Firefox add-ons. I've currently have NoScript, AdBlock Plus, Cookie Culler.
I attempted to use Restore using a fairly recent restore point, but it failed. I hesitated to use an older restore point.

Heres my story, I'll try to keep it short and detailed as possible as to what is wrong with my computer.

Ok, I was surfing the web when all of the sudden a page wouldnt load, i ctrl+alt+delete to see what was going on. I instantly noticed several processes occuring that ive never seen before. I ended them all. Then my computer's background was changed to a blue screen saying, Warning your computer has been infected with spyware, please install an antispyware or have your computer scanned now!.... I restarted my computer, and thats when problems started occuring. I would load my account (administrator), the computer would be running very slow, (the background was still the same, with the warning you have spyware), i tried to ctrl+alt+delete, and then a warning sign came up ( and still comes up everytime I try this) , The administrator has locked you out of this function. So things just got worse, i instantly disconnected my internet connection to prevent the virus from downloading more.... Now i will just list symptoms of my computer, and things that i have done.

- Task Manager is denying me access
- The background is permently changed ( i can not change it)
- The screen saver was changed to bugs... yeah weird, but I was able to find and remove this screen savers file... it was called blackster
- I am only able to successfuly start my computer in safe mode. ( when i try to normally run my computer it will start up, but then after loading the main screen it will ... Read more

Please help I just installed Kaspersky and had a tought time removing McAfee site advisor. When install finished I was about to fix a regedit error, because jpg images were not showing up with IE 6. Now the task manager problem has arose where before i could at least access task bar when trying to fix my TCP/IP problem along with regedit not being found. I believe this has all stemmed from a torrent download of Microsoft office and the pc was not protected because it was just purchased used last week. I would appreciate any help.

A:unable to access the task manager

Hello rcg1078,

That is a good reason to stay away from torrents.

If you can only boot the system in Safe Mode try running a system restore back to

a point before the problem this may allow you to temporarily access the system.

At this point since the system is fairly new maybe you don't have tons of stuff loaded

I recommended that you do a clean install on the system As far as the system not

being protrected this is the first thing that you should do before adding programs on the

system.

I am very frustrated. My girlfriends laptop has a virus and I can't find any solution to it. It comes with a yellow triangle down in the right corner and every once in a while it comes up saying either your comp is infected or being attacked...blah blah. it frequently says the computer is infected with trojandownloader.xs. it has changed the background to a blue screen with a warning that spyware has been detected...blah blah. and when i try to access the task manager to end processes it says the task manger has been disabled by the admin. ive tried various things to get that working, all to no avail. ive tried running smitfraud, but it never gets to the point where it checks if wininet.dll is infected (like many instructions say it should) or asks to replace it. when its doing its "clean" it gets to the point where its deleting temp files and it says the process cannot access the file backup because it is being used by another process, but everythign else is closed. please help!!

Press
Ctrl +Shift +Esc combine key to open Task Manager, and click the
Processes tab.
2.
Click

When you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. (Task Manager now runs with
administrative privileges.)

4.
Switch to the
Users tab and log off the user account.

Method 2: Switch from Command Prompt

1.
Click the
Start button, click All Programs , click
Accessories , right-click Command Prompt , and then click
Run as
administrator .

2.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click
Continue .
3.
At the command prompt, type
taskmgr.exe , and then press ENTER.
(Task Manager starts with administrative privileges.)
Switch to the
Users tab and log off the user account.

Recently whenever I have attempted to install virtually any program, I've been constantly receiving this error message "unable to execute file in the temporary directory error 5 access is denied". From several google searches I have understood that the general cause of this error message is a lack of privileges regarding the temp folder. However this has not helped me since I have the permissions required so I cannot give myself them. I've found a few suggestions to use the "hidden" administrator account or make another administrator account and install via those, this does not work either. This has only begun happening recently and I would prefer to fix the issue instead of restoring/formatting.

All help is appreciated, thank you!

Hello,

A System Restore is your best bet. Choose a restore point before the error message started.

Good morning,I have a system that has had numerous issues, mainly virus related. I have cleaned the system, and show no virus activity... but I'm still having issues.Late last week the system was stuck in a loop, it wouldn't boot to Windows at all (no safe mode, no normal mode). I resorted to a Windows repair from the install disk. It worked... to a certain degree. I am now able to get into Windows, but can not open IE and I can not install a display driver.I am unable to access Windows Update, but was able to set automatic updates to install lots of updates including SP3, but I am still unable to make any changes.Initially when I attempted to open IE I would get a window saying that IE had to close instantly. I attempted to reinstall IE, and I attempted to install a newer version of IE. Neither worked. If I chose to install the updates with the install I would get an access denied error, if I chose not to install the updates with the install it would look like it worked, but now when I click on IE I get "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetcpl.cpl. The operating system cannot run %1"In device manager, I have no drivers installed on my display adapter. If I try to update it, it looks like it's going to install... but then I get "Cannot install the hardware. Access is Denied".Any assistance or insight into this would be appreciated.

A:Unable to access IE, access denied when updating display drivers, no windows update

On any system with a number of issues...it's often better to do a clean install to wipe the slate clean, rather than hope that you have patched all known and unknown issues, IMO.

I have a serious problem with my home PC - infected with something
Here are my problems -
At startup last night a bunch of "virus alerts" came up and I noticed
I have missing programs on my desktop. If I go into
"Start" - I can't even see or go into "all programs" or "find" or "search" or "run" etc...
I can't go into or even see my control box either. Everything is missing on the lower
right "box" when hitting "start".
If I hit control/alt/delete to access my taskbar manager - it says
something like "administrator has disabled task manager"
Windows Automatic update is screwed up also -won't let me change settings.
I rebooted in safe mode and I had to pick between two users -
administrator and M ( I assumed that was for mike/me) and under
the M user in safe mode I still have missing programs (like c.cleaner etc..)
and I can't do much. Not sure if this "safe mode" is really safe.
So, I rebooted in safe mode to administrator and that
seemed normal -but I couldn't access the internet.

I am running Windows XP and use Internet Explorer.
I have Spygate (firewall) and AVG antivirus - both free versions.
I can get on the internet (IE), but I get extra pop ups and websites along with
what I request.
I ran the AVG scan last night- and after 2+ hours and finding some
trojans, tracking cookies etc... and getting rid or quarantining them, I still have serious issue... Read more

I am operating xp home edition and everytime I try to install any program I get this error message as the title states.

"Unable to create a temporary file. Setup aborted. Error 5: Access is denied"

I am able to access %TEMP% but cannot touch add or delete anything in that folder. It says Cannot delete "name of file". Access is denied. Make sure the drive is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
What is causing this error?

explore to the temporary directory,  right click and select security, check that you have permissions to write to that directory.

Hello!

Sometimes a process will hang for apparently no reason. The usual practice is to open Task Manager and terminate the process (select it and click End task). But there are a couple of applications that hang for good and cannot terminate them. I get an Access Denied error when I click End task. If I wait for VERY long time (maybe half an hour or more) maybe this process will eventually quit and close. But this is not always the case. Most practically I have to reset the computer (trying to restart or shutdown the whole computer hangs and never completes the action). This usually happens in Nero Video and Windows Explorer. In Nero Video, if I try to click to select project or to import media on the project, it might hang. This is really annoying as I have several videos waiting editing to free my hard disk space. Other times when I click on the start button, Windows Explorer hangs (I have Classic Shell installed, but I don't think this causes any issues). Has anybody any idea what's going on and how can I solve it? I have already searched for malware, but didn't find anything serious, just some privacy warnings which I have removed.

Thank you in advance.

PS: What means that a process is "suspended"? How can I resume it?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 Intel Pentium running Windows XP  sp3 and have been getting tons of junk mail. I ran Avast, malware bytes &spybot. Nothing found. So I started looking through the Dell help on my computer. I'm not as savvy as I'd like to be and while trying to fix the issue myself I did something that I shouldn't have. First, I tried system restore to go back to a later date but it wouldn't let me no mater which date I tried. Then,I followed a suggestion regarding the registries. HUGE mistake! Now my computer is stuck in a boot loop. I obviously need to repopulate my hives but have no idea how. When the computer starts the Windows XP logo pops up. Then a box pops up saying lsass.exe access denied a proccess has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights. When I click ok It restarts. The Dell logo pops up then the Windows XP logo and then the access denied again. Ive tried to start in last known good configuration. Safe mode. System restore. But, i keep ending back in the loop. So, I tried ordering some disks that I thought may be able to help while I've been reading through threads for information. I don't have any of the original software for this cop, I purchased it used a few years ago. But, I purchased a Knoppix 7.6.1., and system rescue from same CO, & 2 CDs off eBay Windows XP 64 bit & 32 bit as I wasn't sure which was the one I might need. A:lsass.exe Access Denied a process has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights

Windows XP has reached end of life 2 years ago... It is an insecure Operating System and should no longer be used especially online.
The Dimension 2400 is weak hardware (Pentium 4 Processor, IDE hard drive, DDR RAM) from 2003! so 13 years old! Its not worthwhile running a modern Operating System on it and below minimum system requirements.
If on a budget you are best to buy a second hand OptiPlex 780 with a Windows 7 OEM license (which can be used for a free Windows 10 upgrade).

Error assigning ownership "Unable to set new owner on.. Access denied" Hi,

I've a question about assigning ownership.
I'm logged in as user "Steph".
As Steph, I made a new folder "Documents_Steph".
Because she made the folder, she's owner of this folder.

Then I tried as Steph to assign ownership to a different user "User01".
But then I got the message "Unable to set new owner on.. Access denied"?
Though I thought that when you're owner of a file or folder, you can assign ownership to everyone?
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!!

Kind regards,

A:Error assigning ownership "Unable to set new owner on.. Access denied"

Well, you have to run as administrator in order to do that. Make sure the account you're using is an administrator account. Even if it is, run the explorer "as administrator". It will as you for permission, but not for the password - since you're already an administrator. After that it should work. Let us know if it does not.

Taking ownership of a file is a multi step process unless you use the "take ownership" shortcut which does all the work for you.

Hi There,

I've been trying to help my father-in-law with this problem, but its gone above my experience, so I am hoping someone here can help.

Dell Computer
Windows XP

When the computer loads, we get to the main screen, but the wall paper has changed to a screen with boxes of color that makes a maze (lol)

All icons are gone, and so is the task bar

When attempting to access to the Task Manager, using Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Task Manger comes up with an error stating "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator",which gives you only 'ok' to click on, and then of course you're not able to work within Task Manager.

I attempting to get him to use the Run but using CTRL+R but when he hit it, all you could hear was the computer beeping and nothing appeared.

When talking to him, he says he remembers seeing a screen before this all happened that said something about a trogjan, and he thought he hit okay to get rid of it. After talking to him more today he told me there was a few different windows that he kept following along and hitting, so I assume it is the Antivirus 2008 trojan family that may have his computer hostage.

Where do we go from here?

Hey

A few days ago I found out that I couldn't access my task manager, it seems to be grayed out wherever I try to select it, I went to run and ran the taskmgr.exe and it came up with an error saying it has been disabled by the administrator though this account is the administrator account. I made a new account and from there I was able to access it but still can't from my main account.
I uploaded a Hijackthis log, so maybe someone could help me out because I don't understand it.

Thanks

A:Can't Access my Task Manager

hmmm

seems to me you got a nasty virus that disabled your task manager. Personally i would reformat because sometimes viruses like this disables more than just the taskmanger , but the run command and other important windows features.

To enable task manager do the following:

Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Navigate to this branch:
User Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options / Remove Task Manager

Double-click the Remove Task Manager option.
Set the policy to Not Configured.

hope this helps.

Hi! I need help figuring out what happened to my ability to access the Task Manager for my computer. I am using Windows XP. For years I have been accessing it by hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL.
I recently returned from a week vacation to see that my husband had recently used a program called NEW CONNECTION WIZARD and I believe the two problems may somehow be connected. He claims not to have used any such program, nonetheless it is showing up as a recently accessed program.
Is there some way I can restore access to my task manager?

I don't log on as a user, and always am the administrator of this machine.

I see that there is a logoff button. In the start menu there is also a logoff gary rabbitt button.

I wanted to check here first beofe doing anything.
Ran Spybot, and Ad Aware, no probs found.
Ran Trend MIcro spyware program, no probs.
I have not run Norton yet but will.

I can still access Regedit and msconfig, so I figure it is not a virus.

Could I have loggedn on somehow as Gary rabbitt? and the task manager is not accessable?
Should I log off gary rabbitt?
I am lost on this, and I do need to have the Manager come up.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Okay! Where to start... I think I ran an activex control I shouldn't've, and that was about a week ago. Ever since, my computer has been acting semi weird, though nothing big. About two hours ago, something popped up about a virus being there and a worm. I tried scanning with Norton and it stopped aroudn the 7600th file. I know that's not all the files on my computer. I used Avast! to delete the file (it was in Windows folder) so I assume the worm is gone, but I can't access task manager. I'm very bad with computers so I don't want to risk re-installing Windows and messing everything up, so I was hoping there was a way I could re-allow access to Task Manager without doing so?

Things I think are relevent:
On a network
Somewhat shared computer
I used Avast! (I deleted something in windows folder during bootup)
I used Norton (no results)
When I try to run task manager, I get a line saying "Task manager has been disabled by your administrator."
I am the administrator of this computer.

A:i cant access task manager

If you press CTRL - SHIFT - ESC does task manager appear or do you get the "Disabled by your Administrator" message?

The advise below should only be followed if you are not in a corporate environment where you may have an administrator who disabled access to the task manager. I mention this because most typical home installations of XP do not have the "Windows Security" dialogue enabled. If you are not in a managed corporate network, follow the advise below.

If you get the "Disabled By Your Administrator" message when pressing CTRL - SHIFT - ESC please:

1. Download this file to re-enable your access to Task Manager. Download and double click to run. Then click "Yes" at the prompt. This will restore your access to task manager but will not fix the spyware that caused task manager to be disabled in the first place.

2. Task manager being disabled is almost always a sign of spyware or viruses. Please click on, read and follow the 5 steps link in my signature below. This will help you determine if there is any spyware / viruses on the PC as well as help you post a HijackThis log which will allow the malware removal team here at TSF to help you remove what caused task manager to be disabled.

Hope it helps,
