Alt+ characters on Lenovo T430 keyboard

Q: Alt+ characters on Lenovo T430 keyboard

Hello everyone, How can I insert alt+ characters on T430 keyboard? For example, if I wanted to insert en dash on my regular desktop keyboard, I would press alt+0150 (on numeric keyboard). However, I cannot find the right combo on my thinkpad keyboard. Thanks for your help, Srdjan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Alt+ characters on Lenovo T430 keyboard

In order to execute those ASCII/ANSI codes, you must have NumLock on. The involves the Fn (blue) key. With it on, you then use alt = the small numbers located on the lower right coner of keys to the right of the Trackpoint head. This is not easy. I prefer to run charmap.exe, minimize it to the task bar, and copy/paste the characters I need. I don't know if the old standard way (Num Lock On, ALT+nnn) would work with an external full keyboard.

OK, Windows key on external keypad works OK.  Windows key plus shortcut keys (for example, Windows +T in Chrome for opening a new tab) does NOT work.  Normal alpha keys work AOK.   Device manager shows the 3rd party external keyboard as installed without issue.  The keyboard works on another computer (MacBook Pro 13") without issue.  Keyboard in question is a steelseries 6gv2. Interestingly, the issue is also occuring with the Lenovo thinkpad's very own keyboard (Windows + T not working!).   what gives?   O/S is Windows 7 - have just acquired the T430 2nd hand, so trying to test everything is AOK, etc.   I had an issue with sound not working via the lenovo's speakers too, but solved that (uninstalling realtek device drivers and letting Windows auto-install new drivers).   I hate Windows with a passion, but sadly, this laptop is designated to be used as my astro laptop for working in the field (PHD2, ascom drivers, mount control, acquisition software, etc).  There's pretty much nothing that runs native in OS X/MacOS sadly, so I'm being forced to run Windows crap.   I've owned several laptops in my life, and never had an issue with an external keyboard working out of the box, so this is very frustrating.  15 years in IT, experience in many different operating systems (mostly UNIX or GNU/Linux to be bluntly honest).   I haven't had a chance to RTFM yet for the T430, so I... For the past few days, every once and a while (and increasingly more often..) my T430 randomly types characters, spcecifically in the following order: \;lkjfdaaaaa It ends on this "a," so if I don't interrupt it (e.g., start pressing backspace), it would go on "\;lkjfdaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...." etc.  Simultaneously, the volume goes on and off randomly (including the volume light in the upper left of the keyboard). I have very bare-bones software on the computer, and haven't downloaded anything recently. I also ran malwarebytes and another scanner and no issues as usual. It seems like it may be a hardware issue, but I'm not even sure where to start. I bought the laptop refurbished about a year and a half ago, so it could be that it's worth it to just get a new one, but I wanted to check here first on any ideas.

Hello all, The keyboard for my T430 ThinkPad has been acting up. It's really my own fault, because I spilt water on it. However, it was only on the magnitude of a tablespoon's worth, and I'm aware that the keyboard has a drain underneath to help prevent the kind of issues I'm experiencing. Basically, the issue does not occur in any sort of regularity. Sometimes the light on the Fn key turns on  for no reason, sometimes my mouse freezes up or glitches around the screen, sometimes the number keys do nothing, sometimes none of the keys do anything. The only consistentcy is that the spacebar never works, but sometimes if I'm browsing the web hitting the spacebar will act as a backspace. The left alt key also now dims my screen whenever I hit it, which doesn't make sense to me. As I said, I'm sure this has to do with the fact I got a bit of water in the keyboard and that's entirely my fault, but I'm dissapointed that such a minor spill has basically ruined my keyboard even with the drain underneath. I guess I'm just holding out hope that maybe something in the menus got messed up...

I'm using a t430 for work.  I "kinda" like the new keyboard except for one painful thing. Lenovo changed the Back/Forward keys to Page Up/Page Down.   Does anyone know if there is a way to revert or change it to Back/Forward? NOTE:  I LOVE the backlight option.  Miss the original F Keys and was more than frustrated that the lenvo help docs didn't include instructions on where the BREAK key went (it's now F-B).  JIM

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T430.It runs Windows 10 Pro x64. The problem is that the keyboard stops working in some programs. The program fails by not responding, the hourglass is displayed and can be made no interaction with the program. The only solution is to use the Task Manager and kill the program. The keyboard works for example in Microsoft Outlook and Excel. It does NOT work in for example Microsoft Internet Explore / Edge, Explorer, Notepadd++. The problem is the same for both the build-in keyboard and an external keyboard connected via USB cabel. I can not figure out which Windows and/or driver update caused the problem. It has been going on for many months, and I "solved" the problem by reverting all the updates. I've tried updating all drivers and BIOS - but no luck.I've tried using the Lenovo Solution Center.

Greetings,  my T430 Laptop is not working properly. Suddenly the screen went black and then after a while the Laptop continued working but the screen didn´t come back to life. After I connected it to an external Screen via the vga output and using an USB Keyboard I learned that: 1. The Power Button and the Touchpad and Touchbutton work properly, everything else INcluding the FN functions dont work. 2. In the Screen Settings the LAptop screen is switchend off and if switched on the brightness is fixed to 0 and can´t be raised even with console commands What I did: Switching it off, disconnecting from AC and taking out the Batterie, Pressing the Power BUtton for 20 seconds1. I was able to work with the system via external screen and keyboard2. I disconnected the keyboard and looked for damage inside the device3. I dried it in a bag of rice (the problem first occured in a high humidity room) Any more advices you could give me? OS: Linux Mint 18

Hi folks -I recently bought a T430 intending to give it to my girlfriend who lives in Brazil.  I found, bought, and installed a Portuguese keyboard for the T430, and haven't had any luck getting the system to recognize the new mapping.  I have selected the Portuguese (Brazilian ABNT) keyboard in Windows (Region and Language -> Keyboards and Languages -> Change Keyboard -> Text Services and Input Languages - Photo Here), but the mapping is still incorrect for most of the Shift+Number keys ("[email protected]#$%&, for example) as well as some of the particular Portuguese characters as well as some of the universal symbols.  I'm tying this now with help from the On-Screen Keyboard.(Sidenote:  I loaded Windows 7 Ultimate on this PC simply to unlock the ability to add a Language Pack, but that's for the Display Language, not the Input Language, and shouldn't be a factor here). Looking at the Portuguese keyboard mapping in WIndows, even that keyboard layout doesn't match how my T430 keyboard is laid out physically, so I think this issue needs to come back to the manufacturer for an answer at some point.  The physical keyboard layout is particular to this model, so I'm not sure how the Windows Portuguese mapping would respond to that anyway. Here's the Windows Portuguese layout preview (note that it doesn't even show any of the special characters on the number keys, but beyond that, what it does show is different than the physical layout of my T430 k... Hi Wes,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that external keyboard is not working in your Lenovo ThinkPad T430 when plugged into dock.

Could you try the below mentioned steps?

Go to control panel, Open Device Manager.

Scroll down to the bottom of the Device Manager Window, and click on ?Universal Serial Bus Controllers? to expand it.

Right-click on the first entry in the expanded list named ?USB Root Hub,? and select Disable from the context menu.

Right-click once again on that same ?USB Root Hub? entry, and select Enable from the context menu.

If it works, the list of items under ?Universal Serial Bus controllers? should refresh, and you should see some additional items in the list.  The USB ports on the docking station and devices connected to them should be working once again.

If the above said didn?t help resolve your concern, try uninstalling all the drivers listed under USB Root hub. Restart the system and click on scan hardware changes in device manager. System will auto detect all the new hardware and will install the drivers appropriately.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I originally bought this off eBay about 2 years ago. The only issue it has had is that the battery seemed to drain quickly as whenever I had the laptop on without the AC adaptor plugged in, the computer would shut off on its own within 10 seconds or so. As long as I plugged in the AC adaptor to the laptop, it ran with no problems However, when I tried to power on the laptop yesterday, even with the AC adaptor, it would no longer power on. I did just come back home from the airport, so maybe that had something to do with it? I followed all the steps here: https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001127.htm After following some of the steps, when I hit the power button on the laptop, it would flash for a second or so, and then stop flashing. Nothing ever appeared on the screen What is the next step for troubleshooting? Do I just have to remove the hard drive and/or RAM and place them back in and try powering it on again? Or take it to a repair shop?

Hey Lenovo Forum:

I'm having a battery charging problem that seems slightly different from any on this forum so far. I just acquired a T430 running Windows 7 (64-bit) like a charm. After a few issues with the audio drivers, everything has been running smoothly.

Abruptly, yesterday, when I plugged it into the wall socket (the same socket that it had sucessfully charged on earlier) it failed to charge. Thinking it was the outlet, I tested it. The outlet and adapter are both working fine (the adapter powers the computer no problem with the battery removed from the system). The lock switch on the battery is in the propper position (i've tried both). The battery is not overheated (it's cool to the touch). I tried removing everything and holding the power button (apparently that discharges some built up charge in the system) then reconnecting the battery and AC adapter, nothing.

I just downloaded the power manager which (when the laptop is, in fact, running off of AC power (the battery charge indicator hasn't draining in hours of continuous use) reads:

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad T430 is not powering on.
Check if it's something to do with your AC adapter or battery. Insufficient power might cause some of those issues as well. Take the battery out and try to power on your laptop with the charger only. Make sure your laptop power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Try starting the laptop using good known AC adapter and battery.

Try connecting the device to an external monitor and check if it displays properly.

Please do let me know the happenings!

Hi, My computer, a 2012 T430, is running at 16W according to power manager at idle, with no program running, in airplane mode and brightness at minimum. My consumption when I got the PC was perhaps at 8W when doing some light work (such as using word) as it could last for about 12 hours with a 90kWh battery. Now, with my battery (granted not new, it has 45kWh remaining), my computer lasts no more than 2 to 3 hours in the same conditions.  I tried disabling the nVidia graphics card, and deleting its driver. I replaced the fan and cleaned up the computer as much as I could and installed an SSD (samsung 850 evo) rather than the original HDD, which means that I also did a clean install of windows 7. Anyone facing the same problem or have any solution? Thanks in advance !Cheers,Florian

When using an office program, certain characters do not show up correctly. For instance the '@' symbol (shift+2) shows up as quotes.

Here's the strange part. I can type normally in notepad. This suggests that there's a setting in Office??

In either case, I tried changing Vista's language settings by right clicking the taskbar -> toolbars but the 'languages' toolbar does not appear. In other words, i don't have any other languages installed.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, this is my first post to this forum. I am The Excel Addict. I have a website http://www.TheExcelAddict.com where I share tips and tricks for using Microsoft Excel. But sometimes, outside of Excel I need to go looking for HELP.For the past couple of months my computer has been acting strange. When I am typing away, it can happen in any program (Outlook, Excel, Word, TextPad, etc...), everything is working fine, but then my keyboard starts producing odd characters. For example, when I try to type a " (double quote), I get a blank, when I type a greater than sign (>) I get an apostrophe (') and most other non-alphanumeric characters result in the same behavior. If I close the program and reopen it, everything works OK for a while (maybe 10-15 minutes) and then the strange characters start appearing again when I type. I restart the program, and everything will work fine for another little while. It is very difficult to get anything done on my computer that requires typing. Updating my website is a nightmare. So far I've resisted smashing my computer to bits. Has any one else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?I am using WinXP Professional and have McAffe antivirus running. The Excel Addict

A closed friend of mine brought a Win8 laptop (Acer) last week. She ran into 2 problems which I have some problems helping her to resolve.

1/ The laptop (Win8) was setup using her Microsoft account which used her email account... She has an existing skype account using her gmail address. When she tried to access skype on the new computer, preinstall skype wants her to merge the existing skype (with gmail) account with her Microsoft account (which uses her ISP email address). She does not want to do that and wants her existing gmail skype account. Is the only way out is to uninstall the preinstalled skype in the new laptop and reinstall skype again? This way, she can use the existing skype account associated with her gmail.

2/ On the new laptop, the special characters like ~, !, @, #. $. %. ^ (i.e. those keys with dual characters) are stuck at some strange characters which she cannot get out of. These keys when strike display those funny European characters. (My friend is in Canada and when she setup her laptop, she chose English Canada). Is the keyboard defective or the language chosen during setup was incorrect? Note, when I remote in, the control panel clearly stated the language used is English Canada.

Thanks in advance.

A:Skype and keyboard characters

1. Reinstall and Install Skype but use the desktop version.

2. Is the PC fully updated to Windows 8.1 Update 1 + All windows updates?

See if installing the newest keyboard driver helps.

Whenever I type certain characters another character will pop up with it. For example, I try to type "L" and when I'm not using the onscreen keyboard it types as ";L". There are several different keys this is happening to but it is not happening with every key. This just started about 30 minutes ago. I cleaned my keyboard and it started malfunctioning about 10 minutes after Happens to thw following characters I've found l =;lp=poo=poa= select all and several more
