Issue with brightness self-adjusting

Q: Issue with brightness self-adjusting

I have a HP dv6 laptop, intel core I3, 4 GB, running windows 7 sp1.

The issue is the brightness will rapidly adjust itself intermittently. This is a new problem, Im not sure if there is any settings I can adjust or whatnot before taking it in for repair. Any help is appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there a hotkey button to adjust the brightness on the laptop? If so maybe it is stuck or sticking.
EDIT: My sister has the same laptop try holding the Fn button and tapping the F7 and F8 buttons to adjust the brightness. Those buttons might be sticking causing the issue.

A:Adjusting Monitor Brightness

I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.

Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.

I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?

And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?

A:Adjusting Windows 7 brightness - what's the best way?

If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.

A:Screen Brightness adjusting help

First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.

Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

Hi all,

Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter

Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.

I'd appreciate any input from you guys

Cheers

A:New laptop not adjusting brightness

Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers

I had a look at the specs and it says "Integrated Intel? HD Graphics" which isn't helpful as there are different models of the Integrated Intel? HD Graphics

I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?

A:Adjusting Brightness in Display Driver

Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.

Then, install the most recent driver:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.

What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.

I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.

Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

Hi All,

I have an ASUS S400CA running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) and I am having a major issue. When I click Fn + F5/F6 to increase or decrease the brightness, nothing is happening. The slider is stuck beyond a point and the brightness does not change regardless (it is stuck at the highest setting). I have tried to fix this issue by changing brightness settings in the Control Panel, Battery Options, etc. but nothing is working.

How do I fix this issue? Is this is a driver issue? I have tried to find previous versions of the Intel HD Graphics 4000 Driver on the Asus website but only find the one I am using. What should I do? This is urgent!

I just got the HP Pavilion 27xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor at work, working on a computer running Windows 10. I'm pretty tech-saavy, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness! I've tried the F9/F10 function; doesn't work. I then thought it might be an issue with the driver, so I went to Settings -> Displays -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display Adaptor Properties -> Monitor (tab) -> Properties -> Driver (tab) -> Update Driver but got the "The best driver software for your device is already installed" message. Under the Settings -> Displays screen, there's no option for adapting the brightness and I've scoured the forums, but none of the solutions presented are working. Should I manually install an older version of the driver software? Any other potential solutions?

A small, probably a silly issue. But I cannot resolve this.

My computer time is off by 1hr - obviously the DST changes have caused this issue.

In my date/time settings:
Timezone: Eastern (-5)
Automatically adjust for daylight saving time: Checked

In Internet Time:
Automatically synchronize with Internet time server: Checked
Dropdown selection on: time.microsoft.com

I just did an update of internet time synchronization and it changed the computer time to 8:55am when the correct time is 9:55am.

I tried downloading the DST update from Microsoft, but when I try to install it, it tells me that this update is already installed.

This is messing up my Outlook, which is in turn messing up my sync with my Smartphone.

Hi all.

I have a Dell Inspiron 24-3455 aio. The issue is that the brightness reduction button on the lower right hand side is stuck (not physically it seems)  and the brightness is always stuck on 0 and the upper left brightness prompt is always present because of it. Any attempt to adjust it in the OS results in the brightness quickly going back down to 0. I've ruled out the keyboard and driver issues.

The solution I would most prefer (I'm out of warranty anyway) is to disable the hardware brightness buttons altogether and just rely on the OS to change it. I do not want to go through hardware servicing if it can be avoided. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

please help on this

A:toshiba brightness issue

To get the function keys working you can go to Desktop Assist (Toshiba) > Tools & Utilities > System Settings > Keyboard > Special function mode.
Even if it looks right do an Apply > OK that will probably start the service up again. Or you can reboot.

However you can simply use FN+F to access the functions anyway.

Other ways to the Brightness are Charms Menu > Settings > Brightness (Windows 8.1).
Or Control Panel > Display > Adjust Brightness.

You can go to Toshiba support and download the Function Key utility, and System Settings utility from them.

I have a new Lenovo Ideapad 310-15abr, Windows 10, 64 bit, AMD with a Radeon 7 graphics card, with a display problem. When I unplug the power (so it's on battery), the screen dims. So I went to Power Options and changed the power plan both on and off battery so the screen is at 100 percent brightness. Didn't work. Tried a Custom Plan and then went back to a High Performance plan. I turned off Adaptive brightness; disabled the Sensor Monitoring service; updated the Graphic Card driver;disabled and then enabled the Graphic Card again. Turned off Lenovo's Power Options called Power Stretch and Conservation mode.  Also updated the AMD VGA driver.  Nothing works. Still dim when on battery. One thing that I have NOT triedit is changing the registry value by using Regedit command and changing the Feature Test Control. I didn't try it for two reasons. One is that I'm not sure what to reset it to (I've seen "ffff" as the setting and something else longer and more complicated). The other reason is that I am too much of a dumbie to be messing with registry values, basically. I've seen this question asked a couple of times, but no very definitive answers. People usually just tell you to change the Power and Sleep settings so the brightness is on 100% when On Battery.  So that answer is not necessary, but ANY OTHER ANSWERS would be welcome!  Thanks -- Ken

My screen brightness keeps defaulting to extremely dim when I unplug my laptop or don't touch anything for a minute or two. The brightness buttons on the keyboard do nothing, and the slider on the settings section of the left-hand pop-up menu only makes the screen go really dim if the screen is already bright and it will not let it be bright again.

The only way I have found to make the screen bright is...
1. Go to Device Manager
2. Under Display Adapters, right-click Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and select update driver software
3. Select Browse My Computer for Driver Software
4. Select Let Me Pick from a List of Device Drivers on My Computer
5. Select Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
6. The screen adjusts and the issue is resolved

This correction only lasts until I unplug my laptop or leave it idle for a couple minutes. So currently I need to do the above process a few times a day and my laptop is almost useless if not plugged in.
***On the device manager window under display adapters, there was a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it next to my AMD Radeon HD 8600/8700M. Then, I updated the driver and it went away. The update did not fix this problem.

It's completely fine to uninstall Acer Power Management, I personally consider it bloatware. As per: When I open Intel(R) HD graphics pannel go to power and then disable the 'power saving technology and click apply then ok' this works for awhile however when ever i remove the power supply and re connect it re enables it does not stay unticked. That would be the power settings changing as the power state changes (plugged in or not). I usually fix this by creating a custom power plan and defaulting to that. If you have a hard time let me know and I'll see if I can come up with anything.

My battery is draining a little fast not because it's defective but because of whatever is using my CPU, even when I turn on battery saver mode it doesn't help. And I tried booting into safe mode to see if the CPU usage would still be at 100% and it only goes down to 99%. I did another in place upgrade afterwards and it still didn't fix it.

A:Aspire E5-574g Brightness Issue

This is not something we've come across before.  To eliminate a software issue, make sure the brightness settings are not changing when you switch from a dark to light screen. When you are on a dark screen press the FN key + arrow right or left key and note where the brightness setting is. Then go to a light screen and do the same thing and if the brightness setting is the same no matter what screen you are on, then the brightness setting is not changing and causing this. It would be hard to determine the cause but if you are running the Acer OEM operating system it could be a hardware issue with the LCD.

OK, let me preface this by saying that I repair computers as a hobby, I do know that I'm doing usually.

Given that, I have an issue with screen brightness...

Using FN and F10 does not increase brightness (swap FN with CTRL is disabled in my bios - FN is FN)
The screen brightness indicator when I use the FN F10 key indicates the screen is at max brightness, yet at minimum there is no change in brightness.
My ambient light sensor is disabled so I COULD use the FN key to adjust brightness
I have reinstalled my chipset drivers, flashed my bios and tried damn near everything to get my brightness up.

Currently, my brightness is at minimum, despite my power options saying its full and the onscreen indicator when FN is used telling me the same.

At bootup and in the BIOS I am able to adjust the brightness and it DOES get significantly brighter (and dimmer) when I use the FN keys.

I have scoured the internet and have found nothing relating to my issue as of yet, hopefully someone here can help me out

Side note: I have a Compaq 8710w with Vista Ultimate x64 on it (yes, a legit copy)

All windows updates are done, I have even done what I normally refrain from doing - installing all of the HP / Compaq base software garbage that they like to preload in hopes of remedying my issues with the screen brightness level....

Anyone have any idea what I should do next?

I just installed a new monitor in my computer and when i turn the computer on the screen brightness and picture is perfect for about 5 to 10 seconds. After that time it turns really bright and its hard to see anything. I am guessing it has to do with auto adjust and I was wondering how to turn that off on a hp dv5000 laptop running windows xp sp 2. Adjusting the brightness and stuff does not help much. Thanks
