I want to install Avast on my mom's pc but not sure if I should. My problem is what do I not install

Q: I want to install Avast on my mom's pc but not sure if I should. My problem is what do I not install

She already has Emsisoft Anti-Malware but I am guessing that is not enough and runs as a limited user on Windows 10.

My problem is all the options in Avast. Like the web shield, etc. Does she need all of that? If not can anyone post a screenshot of what to check off and install and what not to please? Thanks. It would really help.

Preferred Solution: I want to install Avast on my mom's pc but not sure if I should. My problem is what do I not install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: I want to install Avast on my mom's pc but not sure if I should. My problem is what do I not install

If she runs Emsisoft Anti-Malware (paid version of course, not on demand), I think she is already safe without switching to Avast.

I recently uninstalled ESET Smart Security to switch to Avast, and Online Armor for firewall protection. After installing either one of these my PC won't boot properly - when logging in the, desktop doesn't even load - so I've had to boot in Safe Mode and do a recovery.

Anyone know what could be the issue? I don't believe I have any other security applications installed, so I don't really know what the problem is. I've been told that a HijackThis log might be able to help, so I'll attach one.

Thanks,
Dennis.

So I downloaded Avast today and I keep getting this error message

"Fatal error: current avast! installer is not trusted by avast! Self Defense module. Try to launch the installer again."

I called avast and they said sounds like an infection but I had just done a fresh install, nothing pirated on this computer. I had done a scan with malewarebytes pro and defender and nothing found.

I also disabled both for the installation and still same error, any suggestions?

A:Avast won't install

Temporarily uninstall MBAM using the removal tool, reboot. Then install your AV, and get it updated, configured, activated, etc.

I've been trying to install Avast Free 5.0.677 on Windows 7 x64 and keep getting :

"error 82 (00000052) has occured. Last performed operation was extracting main exe"

Windows Error 0x00000052 - 82

I wondered if this had anything to do with moving the TEMP and TMP folders off my SSD Drive C:\ and onto the Hard Drive F:\

I've not had problems like this installing any other software.

Anyone have any ideas?

Avast hast notified me that my registration has expired.  I don't think I'm in any immediate danger because my virus definitions are still being updated.

My problems are that -

1. Since my registration has expired I can't update the program.  A new version came our a few days ago but I can't manually update.  The "update" box is greyed out and inactive.

2. I can't register.  Every button for registration brings up the message, "The online content is unavailable.  Please check your internet connection and try again."  The only solution seems to be to download and install the updated version.

Can I install the new version over the old one or should I completely remove the old version first?

A:Avast repair install

For avast I would recommend you uninstall the old version and install the new version. If you use the stub installer you may wind up with Dropbox. That happened to be once. You can get the full download of the free version here. You can also use their uninstaller to remove any remnants left behind. Watch out for any optional software download requests. Also, with the new version avast includes their optimizer called Grimefighter. I would use the custom install method and uncheck that so it does not install.

Avast Free/Pro/IS/AP?

What modules you install?

I use Avast Free & IS.

Free
File Shield
Web Shield

IS
File Shield
Web Shield
Firewall
Safe Zone
Sandbox

I use default settings.
PUP enabled & HTTPS under WebShield disabled.

A:Avast Custom Install

File Shield is enough, do not install webshield also you do not need many of bundled tools with it. They use those tool to advertise their products.
In IS installation, you again do not need webshield. Webshields are useless in my opinion. You can make some research about it on google.
Other features I never tried.

Well I have Avast on the Vista laptop and my WinXP desktop and they always install after a rebuild.Because its saying external installer has failed is because it probably needs an internet connection to download additional files, is it connected?

Ok, not exactly sure if I should post this here, or in the XP forum? Anyways, I just built a new computer, and I use XP 64bit, which I have for years. Before I formatted and all that, Avast worked fine on XP 64bit, but now, I can't get it to work. It will usually install, and will want a restart, then after the Windows screen, the screen will be black, and a window will pop up saying something about Avast is changed, or something, and do I want to allow it, and whether I pick yes or no, the screen will just stay black. Restarting just brings it right back to the same black screen, and I have to go into safe mode and do a system restore to before I installed it. I have tried the latest version, and old versions I had from backing up my files before formatting, all resulting in the same problem.

Also, not sure if anyone could help with this other problem. I use Firefox, with adblock, and for some reason, the easylist filter causes my Yahoo search autocomplete to disappear when I mouse over it. It doesn't happen on the home page, only once I start a search, for example, I type in "bleeping" and hit enter, and it brings me to the list of searches it found. Then I put my cursor in the search bar, and it brings down a list of stuff related to "bleeping", and I go to click on one of them, the whole list just disappears. If I turn adblock off, or the easylist off, it doesn't happen, but with easylist off, it doesn't really block any ads. Is there any way around this?

I have checked other forums about the problems trying to install avast and the ones ive found aren't working for me...

I am cleaning up a computer it was pretty badly infected...here are the steps I took...

I took out harddrive and ran it as secondary on another computer.. scanned with MBAM Pro, Superantispyware, AVAST, MSE

Put harddrive back in computer started in safemode did a clean up to startup. rebooted. didn't have internet access so fired up D7 and cleaned out all temp files, proxy and system restore, Then did repair to network option. got back on internet. Ran Combofix (which ive done hundreds of times  ) after that was done I installed MBAM, Superantispyware & Hitman and cleaned up more stuff..

after that I ran adwcleaner, fix tdss, tdskiller, JRT, MBAM rootkit, Roguekiller (which detected a cryptolocker) luckily the cryptolocker didn't lock the files down...maybe I over killed on scans I don't know but that's how I rolled this time...dealing with someone else comp not mine...wanted to make sure was clean...

everything appears to be working just fine including windows updates. I just cant install avast. It "the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more details."

Ive also run sfc /scannow 3 times...reboot after each time
and that's where im at now...thanks

I am doing a custom install because I don't want it installing things I don't need and I want to keep things simple

I don't know what all the options mean so I don't know what to un-tick in some cases. Here is where I am up to...

Web rep - unticked

Avast gadget - unticked

File shield - not sure what it is?

Mail shield - unticked - I use Gmail only

web shield - firewall? Don't want it if it is.

P2P shield - don't need

IM shield - I use Yahoo messenger sometimes but don't really feel I need a shield, how does it work anyway?

Network shield - sounds like something I need, as long as that is not a firewall

Script Shield - javascript? good idea to have?

behaviour shield - no idea what this is

Can anyone help me understand what these shields are and if it is a good idea to use them please? The ones I have done in red font are the ones I really don't understand/need to decide whether to use them.

A:Avast custom install - what are the shields?

So this is what I am currently thinking sounds like a good install for me, without unnecessary stuff. But some of it is guess work.

Hi, I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 755. I performed a clean install of Windows 7 professional, 64-bit, for my parents to use. I tried to install Avast, and at a point in the installation, the computer restarted. The computer turned back on, and running the setup again, it installed correctly, without rebooting. BUT, when I put it to sleep, and tried to wake it up, and it just restarted.

I was having the restart from sleep problem before, but after making a few tweeks to the power options, I fixed that problem. I am at wits end on this; I've never had a computer fight me this hard! Thanks for any help.

Hello,
I just formatted my laptop with Windows XP SP2, and since I've misplaced my drivers CD, I downloaded the Ethernet drivers for my laptop, from my PC and transferred it using a CD-RW.
Having installed the ethernet drivers, I activated Windows, and downloaded avast 4.8 Home. I did not do anything else online.

After downloading the installer, when I double clicked it, it showed me the certificate and all, and then the installer started. I clicked Next once... the next screen appeared.. and it vanished before I could even read it. Same thing happens everytime.
I even tried running it as administrator, but it doesn't help.

Please help me. Thanks a lot in advance.

You seem to not have the correct Windows Installer for the application. The first thing you should do is to run Internet Explorer and type in the address bar: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate and make sure that you click Express to scan for the highest priority updates. It will also look for hardware updates for you. It could take quite a while to download all the updates and install them. After you have everything installed, then try the install for Avast! again.

Hey all...

Was running AVAST 7.x fine for years, then just updated W7 with SP1 (and all subsequent updates and patches) and afterward AVAST was causing lagged boot time up to 4 min. (Verified it was AVAST doing it by selective boot using MSCONFIG and by looking at diagnostics / event viewer.)

Have not wanted to update AVAST as I don't like the newer versions.

Uninstalled AVAST v7x and reinstalled with same result.

Uninstalled again and reluctantly installed newest AVAST, 2015 beta 10.something. (File & Web shields only, no cloud services, no participation, no streaming updates and no auto-program update.) Boot time about 1:08 but the computer is unusable for a couple minutes while AVAST hogs resources.

REALLY disliking the new AVAST, I used their uninstall tool in SafeMode to remove it, then used a reg program to seek out all instances of AVAST and ALWIL in the reg and deleted all those keys. Also cleared all left over folders, including in user/appdata. Rebooted.

Downloaded AVAST v6.01367 (last version of 6), got offline, then tried to install that. But it pops up a notice that I am trying to install an old version and it will download the newest one. It gives me no choice in the matter.

When I previously had reinstalled v7 a popup says I am trying to install an old version, but gives me the option to continue. But v6 has no option to continue.

Anyone know if a different older version won't do this, or how I can get around it? Thanks!

A:How to force install of old version of AVAST?

I downloaded the oldest 6 version (6.0.1270) which installed without a hitch, unlike v6.0.1367. Weird. Only thing I did different before trying to install this version was cleaning my browser cache, which I don't see how that would have made a diff since I was offline anyway. IAC this is solved. Now just hoping it doesn't cause a 4min boot problem like v7!

EDIT: Argh..... 2min boot. Back to the drawing board.

Installed Avast a couple months ago... changed from AVG Free.  Noticed my Lenovo Y550 Win7 laptop running slower.  We also had just hooked up a new smart tv plus another tablet to the network, so I didn't think too much about the issue.

Last week we upgraded to AT&T Uverse 18Mbps.  Laptop is still slow.
Went to the tutorial "4 Simple Steps for Removing Spyware, etc"  and downloaded Trend Micro Housecall... after 4 hours, I cancelled.
Today, I was doing a search and saw there are lots of AVG files still around, even though the program is no longer installed.
Went to "Uninstall Programs Database" and downloaded Revo Uninstaller, but AVG does not appear and there is not an exe.

Now I have decided to not touch anything else until I get help.  Not sure if the Avast is really working also.

Hi, My niece just got a refurbed Acer desktop with Vista Home Premium 32bit. I uninstalled all of the crapware on it and installed Avast 5.0.418.

The problem is that at boot Vista blocks Avast from loading. Before I installed Avast I went into services and disabled Windows defender. Opened Windows Defender and unchecked everything so it isn't loaded or scanning anything.

Why would Vista stop my Avast from loading at startup, what good is it to have it not loading at start up when the computer is online at all time? UAC should not stop it from loading and the only way I could get it to load is by turning UAC off which I didn't want to do.

Windows 7 does not do this. Oh and I also have all of the windows updates installed.

How do I keep UAC from blocking my antivirus from loading at start up without having to click on "run this program" or whatever to get it running. I would like to keep UAC on but it's unexceptable to have to tell Vista to let run at every start up.

If she or one of her kids misses that ignores it then the computer is online with no antivirus running.

Thanks for any help, I don't remember this happening when I had Vista on my pc.

Hallo kbz1960, this should not be happening and i would suspect malware is blocking it. If you try this first & set up Avast to run as Admin. just right click on avast in the start menu select properties & then compatibility tab and select run this program as admim. then apply/ok

Hello.

I recently installed Planescape: Torment, which is an older game, and had no problems.
About 10 minutes into the game, my computer restarted without warning for security updates(the game was on fullscreen mode, so I just didn't see the warning).
After this restart, the game no longer worked, the .exe file no longer had an image for its icon, just a generic symbol. So I did the first thing I could think of, I uninstalled it. This went just fine.
Then I reinstalled it, or tried to do so. That's when I got this odd error about ikernel.exe. "iKernel.exe Could Not Be Installed (0x5)" see image here:
(Sorry for the large white space in the image, I copy-pasted the error into paint)
I googled this InstallShield issue, and found out that the associated file is ikernel.exe. I didn't find anyone with this EXACT issue (I saw a few with 0x20 but not 0x5). The closest solution suggested I download IKernelUpdate.exe, which tries to update InstallShield. When I ran this update file, it didnt install, giving me the same error as in the image above.
The next solution I found suggested I log in as an administrator to fix the problem. I am the only user of this computer, and have admin privileges, but I figured it was worth a try. After finding out how to enable the administrator profile through the command prompt, I logged off my normal account, got on the admin account, downloaded the IKernelUpdate.exe and tried running it. The same error popped up again. ... Read more

A:Install Shield ikernel.exe problem-can't update or install

Sorry to double post here- but this could be a registry problem, the more that I look into the issue. Could I get some help figuring out how to check my registry to see if that is the issue?

Installing Windows 7 64 bit home premium on a machine. This is the second machine of an identical pair. Computer One of the pair of machines works fine, no BSOD's. The second machine has had blue screens almost since the very beginning.

I installed windows 7 64 bit home premium on a SSD. Install went fine as far as I could tell.

I used double driver to copy all of non Microsoft drivers from the working computer to the second computer. This appeared to go fine except the Atheros Valkyrie BootROM driver won't install correctly using doubleDriver. The working The device driver installation Wizard says that the Atheros Valkyrie BootRom is ready to use but when looking at the hardware list there is a yellow warning sign next to the Atheros Valkyrie BootROM entry.

I'm having BSOD upon booting up and logging in to Windows. It seems like I will get a BSOD, then power cycle the machine and then I won't have a BSOD until I reboot and login again. It seems like there is a pattern of login, BSOD, then reboot and login with no BSOD, then reboot, login and get a BSOD again.

I spent a long time just rebooting , loging in, getting a BSOD then rebooting, then loging in, etc to try and see if I could find any patterns.

I have tried a few things to try and isolate the problem which I think might be associated with AVAST (note: computer One (working comuter) has the same version of AVAST internet security with no problems at all). On reason I suspect Avast is that a few ... Read more

Okahe here's the problem. I used yumi multiboot usb creator to put my windows 7 disk and ultimate boot cd onto my usb. I created a avast rescue disk with my avast and I found that this disk has a bootmgr and windows 7 install disk also has a bootmgr so I cant put them both on the flash drive. I've tried grub chainloading the windows 7 iso but when I try tp install it says "Load Driver" and when I grub chainload the avast iso it doesnt complete. I have tried making a partition and puting the windows files on the one partition and the avast files on the other and then grub chainloading the hiden partitions which does the same. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe Ive skipped something

A:Build multiboot USB to boot both windows 7 install disk and avast

I would use a backup image of your completed install with Avast (and anything else) already installed. This is the modern way to replace slipstreamed installers, although you can try slipstreaming Avast into the Win7 ISO using 7Lite.

To apply image to different hardware then you'd either first SysPrep to move HD to another computer before applying the image to new hardware, or once you've applied it if it won't then Adjust Win7 to boot on new hardware with Paragon Adaptive Restore CD

You can also create and apply the image with Acronis with Universal Restore. This is not the free version provided with any WD or Seagate HD which is also recommended.

Or you can use Win7 backup imaging or the preferred alternative here: Macrium - Image your system

A:Avira refused to update, so I uninstalled and attempted to install Avast! but it failed...

If you uninstalled Avira via Add/Remove Programs only, you might still want to run Avira's uninstall tool to be sure it has 100% uninstalled all tidbits scattered on your drive and in the registry to avoid possible future issues. Here's a link to the uninstall tool download site:http://www.avira.com/en/support/av7_upgrade_tools.htmlAfter running the uninstall tool, Avast probably would have installed OK for you. I run Avast and it sure is quick to notice those remnants of previous antivirus programs during installation. It just thought you might have two AV's on your system------a definite no-no. The AVG, if you're happy with it, could yet encounter problems if there are bits of Avira still in your registry or lurking elsewhere on your pc. I'd definitely run that Avira uninstall tool just to be sure. You might even want to do a search on keyword AVIRA and see if you have any files/folders Avira left, too, and delete them.

Old (2004) Compaq Presario, Win XP Home SP3, MSIE 8, Avast! Internet Security.  WinPatrol, SpywareBlaster, MVPS Hosts file, frequent scans with Malwarebytes AntiMalware.

Some days ago I ran an offered "emergency" update of Avast! Internet Security and forgot to uncheck the Google Chrome installation.  It took a couple of tries before the update would go to completion.  Immediate result was inability to access the Internet via MSIE 8.  Temporary fix was to "Repair" the AIS install.  That worked a few times, but now it does not (after what appeared to be an unnecessary Adobe Flash Player install).  I've removed AFP altogether for the time being, but that did not fix the problem.  Google Chrome does not appear among my installed programs, so I cannot remove it - but bing.com is now at the top of the R1 section of the HijackThis log.  Could that be blocking MSIE?  I do not use Bing.

When I try to go online with MSIE the program opens, then indicates "this tab has been recovered" (only the first tab, of three) and then closes immediately.  When I try to click on any link, for example in an e-mail message, MSIE opens and immediately closes again (with the usual invitation to report the problem to Microsoft).

I can post the HJT log if desired.

I am posting this from one of the office computers, since I cannot get online at home (e-mail continues to function normally on the home computer).

A:Solved: XP Install-loops back to install from CD-during setup/install

If you're doing a clean reinstall Windows XP and booting from the disc, the setup/install process will involve 2 restarts.

If you press a key when the
Press any key to boot from CD
command appears during each restart, the setup/install process will start all over again.

Keep your hands off the keyboard during each restart.

Do NOT remove the disc until Windows completely loads after the second restart.

Here is a good pictorial and instructional guide to follow.

Hello everyone, this is my first build and everything went fine until I try installing windows 7. So for me it gets past the starting windows screen and then it freezes on the setting your language and country screen. There is also no way out of this and I had to turn the computer off. Then I tried installing the CD that came with the mother board. It then say saying generate serial ATA driver Diskette? [Y/N]. At first I said yes and what came up was a screen that said the supported drive was not found: Floppy 1.44mb and USB drive! If I press no it just asks me to reboot. I have looked for solutions to this and haven't come across any that worked.

A:Problem with windows 7 install and Asrock drivers install on Asrock z77 extreme 4

hi there:

complete specs on your system would help. troubleshooting a custom-build computer system that has thousands of different makes/models of components can be tricky to say the least.

You should download and run SPECCY, and post the report here.

Check your cables that they are in place and secure, and all your connections to the hard drive and your RAM modules are seated correctly.

Are you using a Microsoft Windows7 licensed cd or a copy you borrowed from a friend?

Have you tested your hard drive? Is it new in anti-static bag when you got it? Or is it used from an older system you had?

If you have a spare SATA hard drive, you can swap out with your existing SATA drive and try your Win7 load again. If it fails, you could have a Motherboard, RAM, or cable connection problem.

Answering some of these questions and posting your specs will help us to help you!
