Q: Monitor Problems, Response Problems, Lots of Problems

Hi This is my first time posting, and I have a lot of things causing problems with my computer, but to start off, here are my specs.

Windows 10 Pro
Intel Core i7-4770s CPU @ 3.10GHz
8 Gb Ram Corsaire Vengence 4x2
64 Bit
AMD Radeon HD 7700 GDDR5 1Gb (two of them w/ crossfire)
2 Tb 7200 Rpm Seagate HDD
z87-g45 Gaming Motherboard
Case: r5 Gaming Full size case
Power Supply: Corsair AX860
Fans: Rosewill Hyper Silence CPU fan, 2 stock front fans, 1 stock in back

So, to start off, I built this computer myself 2 years ago, and it has been running steadily without too many problems along the way, but earlier last year it began to have some much bigger problems.

Issue 1. Monitor Issues
I say this is a monitor issue, but i really doubt it has anything to do with the monitors them selves. What is happening every once in a while (about 3 times a week) the screens of my monitors will cut to black (it doesn't matter what I'm doing) and stay black for a few seconds before revealing the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and then the rest of my desktop slowly reveals itself. I've tried updating my video card drivers, but that hasn't helped.

Issue 2. Keyboard and Mouse Become unresponsive (System isn't frozen however)
Sometimes if I leave my pc idling in the lock screen, the keyboard will stop working, and when I come back, I can't log in. I can tell my computer is not frozen because the slideshow in the lock screen keeps moving and I can move my mouse (but not click with it.)What I found interesting in these occasions was that the Caps Lock key still lit up when I pressed it. I have tried unplugging and plugging back in the mouse and keyboard, but all that does is make the keyboard unusable (I can't press the caps lock) and the mouse doesn't show up anymore. Both Issue 1 and 2 are only fixed with a system reboot.

Issue 3. System Freezes
This problem happens the least out of the 3, and happens out of nowhere (like the other two.) I might be working on something, and when I look back to my computer, it is completely frozen. I can't move the mouse or press any buttons, and the task manager has stopped updating its processes (I keep it open at all times.) This issue is also only fixed with a reboot.

These are some of the issues that are most prominent with my system, I hope someone will be able to help me with this. I can provide more clarity if need be.
Thank You

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

They installed McAfee Professional, but the rest is free stuff: SpyBot Search and Destroy, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SUPERAntispyware, Defraggler ( at least once a month ), No Script, Abine, and similar - all freeware. Oh yes, CCleaner. They do not seem to interfere with each other.

The problems are this. I have several Firefox Extensions and I think some of these are causing trouble. I ran Firefox in safe mode after disabling all extensions. This helped, but I think there may be Profile problems, too. I've had trouble getting good directions for fixing that. Mozilla is crashing a lot. Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

Hi, my name's Katie and I'm having major virus/spyware,adware,malware removal issues! I

have a lot of different things going on here, and can't make any sense of it. I tried

following other people's solved threads, but they didn't solve my issues, so I guess I need

personalized help. I have Windows security running (well, I usually do when it's working

properly,) and I run Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly, but it appears that they cannot solve

my issue. Anyway, here's a list of things that have been happening to my computer since the

virus happened...

1. I KNOW the virus was contracted in AIM. An IM came in from a friend with only a link. It

didn't look suspicious to me, so I clicked it, and all of a sudden I had IMEd everyone in

my buddy list the link, and received about a million IMs back (didn't have time to read

them before My Computer's virtual memory ran out and crashed AIM on me.

2.When the computer starts up, sometimes a default background appears before the logon

screen with the user accounts appears.

3.After logon, the same thing in general happens every time. Spybot comes up with a bunch

of messages saying that there is a registry change to my homepage or something else

happening. I deny it, and it denies it over and over again to seemingly no avail. A .txt

file appears on the desktop. I have never opened this file, don't know what it is, and

On another subject, too lazy to make a new thread, it seems that my new monitor, the Dell 19" widescreen, it looks like most of the graphics are pizelated, any ideas.

Just tell me if you need any more information on either of these problems.

Hey man i dont know anything about your first query, but with second query, i bought a new 19" moniter for my PC and everything was pixelated and looked like there was gaps in the text and so on, this might sound simple and stupid and you may have already tried it...but I adjusted the screen resolution in properties menu, again you probably have tried that though.

I sure need help  --- I do not know how to deal with viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.
My husband and I were traveling. We had to use public Wifi places to check our email on our laptop. when we got home and checked our email accounts on our laptops, we found some really weird looking email messages. I 'think' my husband opened one that had his name in the Subject line, but we deleted all he other ones that looked strange. We did not open those emails, just deleted them.
Now all 3 of our computers are doing really weird things. I have run scan after scan after scan, both downloaded one and online ones. Sometimes they find problems and fix them. sometimes the scans find nothing. Yet our problems just seem to be getting worse and worse. I DESPERATELY need a lot of help.
I know it would be very confusing to try to work on all 3 of our computers at once so maybe we can start with my husband's desktop computer.
I am currently running Avast on it and it has been running for hours. It is find TONS of things like these ----

"...is infected by JS: ScriptIP-inf [Trj}
etc, etc, etc.

Ok, I have lots of XP problems:

Can't open My computer from the desktop, the computer just locks up whilst attempting to open it, showing me the animated torch, saying it is looking for files.

The computer is running really slow, locking up and crashing programs for no apparent reason.

Cant access the drop down box (shortcut key F4) in windows explorer/applications/anywhere.

Internet explorer refuses to do anything if I type a web address without the http:// into the address box. It worked before, but now it isn't for some reason.

Finally, when I restart windows, it locks up for anything up to 5 minutes when it comes back up. The windows bar with the start button on, when I pass my mouse over it, the pointer turns to an hourglass and I am unable to do anything unti it sorts itself out.

I have tried running several anti virus programs, including AVG, Mcafee and Norton. Only AVG came up with a virus, 'Dialler'. I cleared this and it didn't make any difference. I alos tried system restore from several points, but each time it told me that it was unable to restore.

If ANYONE can give me any help at all, I would be extremely grateful.

I have a friend who has a new Gateway with XP who complains that recently everything has been sluggish, there have been slowdowns and freezes, etc. I know win98 but not XP. Are there diagnostics and such that he can run on XP to check for anything that might be causing his problems? Things like SFC, scandisk, etc? Are there basic things he can be checking before calling Gateway? I will have him defrag just in case that might be a factor.

I am running a desktop HP Pavilion 500-123ea, 8 GB memory running Windows 10 (originally Windows 8). The computer frequently freezes/crashes.

The sfc/scannow fails to complete.

I have been getting conflicting results from DISM. When I run 'CheckHealth' it says 'The component source is repairable.'

When I run 'Restorehealth' in DISM it says there is an error 0x800f081f and that 'The source files could not be found'. I am referred to the link 'go microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=243077' which doesn't seem to go anywhere.

I realise I've posted before, and appreciate all received advice, but has anyone encountered this sort of problem before?

A:Problems with Response from DISM

This is from the tutorial forum. DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums . Try using Option 1 part six of the tutorial.

I have had repeated problems with my computer freezing/crashing. It?s a HP Pavilion 500-123ea, 8GB memory. sfc/scannow does not complete. Dism ?CheckHealth? is OK.

I have referred to the tenforums tutorial 7808 on Dism repair (last title I had was ?Repair Windows Update?). This has instructions to download a ISO file.

I have been struggling with this. On first attempt, the word I got was ?can not open file as archive?, ie that?s the install.wim file.

Second attempt I got ?source files could not be found?.

Thirdly, I tried another download attempt and after 20 minutes nothing had happened.

The download seemed to want to default to the C drive, although I had preferably been trying to get it to a removable F drive USB disk. No particular success either way.

I have tried to be careful with the install:wim syntax.

I suppose the diagnosis would seem to be that I have somehow ended up with some corrupted files.

Is this DISM RestoreHealth tool usable? Am I likely to get anywhere with it? Anyway, as before I much appreciate previous advice on this forum and I just don?t know if there?s anything else I can try.

A:Problems with Response from DISM

Hello jdcallison,
Actually RestoreHealth from DISM is somewhat complex. You cannot repair a 10586 build with 10240 ISO, which I hope isn't a case here.
The best option in your case would be to do a repair upgrade, which keeps everything and reinstall windows.

Okay, so I've been getting this problem while connecting to my college dorm's network. Whenever I plug in an ethernet without modifying some settings, my computer doesn't even respond to the cable being plugged in. Going into my LAN adapter settings, I tested if a cable was even being recognized, and it was not.

The first thing I did was install a new driver for my LAN adapter, which at first did nothing. Then I started fiddling around with something called Link Speed and Duplex Settings, because it's description said matching these settings to the network's can sometimes invoke a response. Originally set at 'auto configuration', I changed these settings to 100 mbps and got a response, but didn't connect to the network. All sorts of problems come up like "Didn't recognize a DHCP server, Windows obtained automatic IP address settings". It will try to connect to the network, but ultimately takes 2 minutes or so to come up with these errors.

So next I tried the 10 mbps setting, and for some reason, this makes everything work completely fine without issues. Except I can now only get extremely slow internet speeds in exchange for internet actually working. I also tried buying a $15 NIC card to go into my unused PCI slot, but my computer won't even accept the new NIC. Booting up my computer will make it go through this continuous power restart cycles without actually displaying anything on screen.

Currently I'm usi... Read more

Before we get started, I'd just like to say that my computer is really messed up. Just recently i think my router messed up, because the internet is now only accessible on this computer, and not on the other one connected with it. (Yes, I've tried many many ways to fix that.) To add on to that, the internet on this computer is considerably slowed. Also, I am pretty sure that i have a browser hijacker. I can't click a link on google without getting redirected to '101links.com' or something like that.

Other problems include applications disconnecting themselves (exiting without my permission?), greyed out display options, and the inability to access my windows firewall. (The application tells me that I do not have the permission, or that 'due to an unexplainable problem' I can't access it.)

After many virus scans, nothing has been found, besides the everyday deletions and such. There is nothing much else I can think of doing, so I have attached extra.txt. Hopefully you can help.

My computer (Win XP) is giving me all kinds of error messages. When I start it up, four Microsoft windows pop up. One for DAP. McAfee, Quick Time and BackWeb-7288971.exe. Also one from Norton that says it can't start the e-mail (the procedure entry point GeuForeground Window could not be located in the dll User 32.dll) and about thirty seconds later a Windows Explorer error pops up and says it must close. I tried to use the System Restore, but as soon as I click on it, up pops the error page and it, too, has to close.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Hodi

I have been working on my mother-in-law's computer, and it originally was infested with a doozy of viruses, adware, malware, etc. After finally getting AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc. installed and run, and performing chkdsk /r, I have the computer running decently. Unfortunately there are still random and weird problems, such as a RUNDLL startup error claiming it cannot find the specified module "C:\Windows\system32\uhhwihyo.dll" Her Internet Explorer's title bar is also blank and I cannot get the menu bar to come up. (Yes, I know about the alt, and F11, and all the normal fixes for hidden menu bars). Also, I cannot open Internet Options in the Control Panel, instead a windows flashes for less than a second and disappears again. I know these are all random and confusing problems, and she can still use the computer if I can't solve them, I just don't like unanswered questions and unexplained problems. Anyway, this is my last hope to get this computer up and working again! I hope some one can help. I have had problems all week when I switch on the computer it comes up with

unexpected internal c tree (R) error 7716

When I click ok its followed by

The instruction at 0x7c809783 reference memory 0x000343d4 The memory could not be written, That was the first problem. I had a look aroung msconfig start up and saw somthing called point 32 and semanticInsight which I have disabled. Computer went mad shut downs pop up warnings etc.
I have scanned in safe mode with system restore switched off using

adaware ( which would not scan kept going to blue screen with fatal error warning)
spybot (found loads, toolbar 888, media plex, plus others)
CWS shredder ( found CWS misconfig and some thing else forgot name of)
Windows defender ( again toobar 888, C2lop, need to find bar, altnet plus others)
Ewido ( found about 5)

This is the second time I have performed these scan in todays and in the same mode and they keep coming up with the same stuff

Avg has found 9 trojans in two days and still keeps firing warnings at me.

I have look around and delete stuff I think should not be there. I have just rebooted and the same error message internal C tree etc is still there.

I have posted my Hijack this log to see if anyone else can see something I carnt I myself are running out of options what to do next. IE keeps struggling going off to a spyware site wanting me to buy. What ever it is it keeps coming back.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

The last time you asked for help you did not respond to the assistance offered so I hope you will this time.

Please move HijackThis out of the Temporary files and into a separate folder of its own in program files, so that it can function properly and create back-ups which can be restored, if necessary.

It is likely that you have a variant of the Vundo trojan that hides itself from HijackThis.exe so if we rename HijackThis, the entries should become visible.

Go to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder. Right click on the HijackThis.exe file and select "Rename". Rename it puppy.exe. Make sure it has the .exe extension or it will not work.

Then run HijackThis again and post a new log please.

A:Lots of problems

have you tried to boot up in safe mode and running these?
Get CWshredder and run it too. found here
Also, another Antivirus to try is TrendMicro's housecall. found Here.
It's a free one-time scan, but is good. When it finds a virus, you can click on the name and it will bring up a page on it which usually contains additional removal instructions.

As for hijackthis, once you start it, select scan. (doesn't take but a few seconds) Then select save log. save it where you can find it again. it opens with textpad. copy whats in that log and post it in the hijackthis section on this site. Those guys (and gals..lol) are good there.

I'm having problems with both my cdrom and cd burner. The cdrom is a 32x Mitsumi and the burner is a 2x Memorex(so slow). I'm running Win 98 sec ed. I have 128 megs of ram and a Pentium II 300mhz processor.

First, when I put a cd into the cdrom it takes forever before the disc is accessible and it may lock the rest of the computer up until it's done spinning up. However, it may never finish spinning up at which time you have to eject the disc to unlock the rest of the system. Also, when playing media files from it after a while it's starts playing back choppy. This only just started about a week ago.

Then there is the cd burner. Somewhat more stable then the cdrom when playing back but won't successfully burn a disc for anything. It will either burn the whole thing right up until the end and then blow out the disc while writing the table of contents or it will blow the disc within the first couple of minutes or lastly, the software will just lock. I've tried both Nti and Adaptec with no luck. I get maybe one out of twelve cds burned successfully.

I spent all last night doing scandisks and defrags to make sure the problem wasn't any rogue proggies running in background. I shut off all background tasks. Used Tweak All to free up 3/4 of my memory(I think I have a bit of a memory leak on that system) and still blew out the disc. Like the cdrom, this is a fairly new problem. I've been using both drives for over a year with no trouble ... Read more

ok well first my explorer.exe stopped working, im not quite sure when... it seems like somethings closing it a few moments after opening it. the taskbar appears for a split second if i try to run it in taskmgr and then dissapears... system restore didnt help at all. i also read a guide on here about using regedit to fix it but the specified files didnt exist. but well, i kinda just dealt with this problem for a while, ran everything through task manager and it got the job done. but now ive encountered a problem... theres absolutely no space left on my HD and i cant empty the recycling bin. i read a few things about how you can do it in DOS but none of them worked. so i guess what im asking is a fix to either problem and id assume itd be easy to work from there. oh and a CD blew up in my disc drive a few years ago so i cant even reformat or do anything else that requires that...

okay, i did all of that, but im really not sure on how to use those programs, so on the first one, i checked everything, then next and delete. the spybot came up with a couple of errors: the first one-dll c:WINDOWS/wt/webdriver.dll is not a valid windows image
then the second one is: unable to start-wdengine.dll not found
then it would not let me exit, so i had to go to end now.
i also did the hijack thing, and here the resutls:

In the last few months I've been having alot of trouble with my computer.

First I started noticing slow loading times. For example, windows would load really slowly (it would be on the loading screen at startup for 5 minutes), installing programs would take at least five times as long as usual and it would take ages for my games to load. I scanned for viruses but there weren't any. I reformatted my PC and it seemed to fix the problem. However, after installing and playing a game (Call of Duty 4) for a few hours it started playing up again. Same problem; slow loading times. I reformatted once again. I played the same game again, and it froze. I tried restarting but it just blue screened at the windows loading screen...I reformatted once again and haven't installed the game since.

I move my PC around alot. I take it back and forth between houses every few weeks. About 50% of the time I've done this it starts playing up again. For example, last week when I moved my PC to another house I tried starting it up but I would get an error saying something about a missing DLL, and it told me to contact the system administrator or replace the DLL. I formatted my C drive partition (I created another partition last time I reformatted because I was sick of losing all my important files) to get it working again. Most problems I've had when I've moved my computer have prevented me from starting it up, but I didn't always get this DLL error. Another one I ... Read more

Start by testing memory:

MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)

If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.

If you are running Vista and can boot up, go to Start > Search and type:

Choose to run a memory diagnostic on next boot. Or, you can boot from the DVD and run it from there.

A:Lots of little problems (HJT log)

did i do that right?>first time.===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded... I have a laptop with XP Pro SP3 and up until last night its been running fine. Last night I turned on a movie and I got blue screened. So I turned it back on and started the movie again. Fifteen minutes into it I heard the windows error sound and my computer restarted on its own. Again I turned it on and played the movie. It finally finished and I went to sleep. When I woke up this morning I had a windows bubble that said my computer was infected with spyware. It said to click to fix it, so I did. Nothing happened. So I go to do a virus scan and find out my anti-virus software (McAfee) is disabled and won't enable. So I do a scan with adaware and it find nothing. I do a scan with McAfee and my computer restarts in the middle. When it turns back on, it takes about 5 or 6 mins to boot (it normally takes one or two at most). I download HJT to try to post a log but it won't open, even in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore but apparently it deleted all my restore points up to about an hour ago, so I can't even do that. I have no idea what do do, please help.

Also, occuring towards online activity, online games will drop and simple web browsing will freeze.

Ok well firstly I am running xp pro service pack 2 and my network setup is it runs through my Netgear DG834 into my wireless belkin Wireless G router which my 2 computers are linked to (1 is a desktop computer connected to it by a cable and the other is a laptop connected wireless)

The problem is I wanted to port foward as I have tryed to do before and failed because my modems IP is and the wireless router is so they were on different subsets and I couldnt figure out how to poward accross the 2. So today I decided to set my 2 computers to static ip's (1 was the other was then I changed the wireless routers IP to so they were all on the same subnet. That didnt work cause as soon as I done that the modem stoped communicating to the router therefore it was just the router and the 2 computers conencted.

So I was stuffing around in the settings and after awhile I decided to make a post here cause I couldnt work it out so I then changed the router IP back to but stupidly I relised to late that I disabled DHCP. So I then changed both computers IP's back to automatic etc but now seeing as I dissabled DHCP I cant connect to the router to ennable it again so I cant connect to the internet or anything with my laptop.

The only way I am on the internet now is because I have connected my computer straight to the modem but cant do that with laptop cause it is wireless so if anyone can help I would great... Read more

You can do a manual reset of your router by finding the little reset hole and using an unbent paperclip to hold down the switch in there for approximately 30 seconds while the router is powered on. This will reset everything back to the factory default.

Hello Samstone and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. First let's move HijackThis into its own folder and then get a log file that we can read.ImportantYour copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it is run from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted. Please open My ComputerDouble-click on Local Disk (C:)Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.Next, we need a complete HijackThis (HJT) log file to be able to analyze what is happening on your computer. Boot normally, start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, click on the Format menu item. Click on the WordWrap item to remove the checkmark there. Now press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.I will review your log when it comes in.DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CL... Read more

A:Hjt Log: Lots Of Problems Help!

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum. My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today. It is a good idea to print off these instructions:This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above. A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost. Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.I would recommend that you uninstall some programs off your PC; they are rouge antispyware tools. You can uninstall it from add/remove in the control panel if you wish. You can also read more infomation on the following link, where it is listed:http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htmI would recommend you uninstall the following rogues:Antivirus-Golden, MalwareWipe, SystemDoctor 2006 and WinAntiVirus Pro 2006.Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Now reboot into Safe Mode. This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode. Hi there. I'm trying to get my dad's laptop back to "normal" working condition. It's less than a year old - Dell studio 1737 running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. Processor reads: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53 GHz with 4GB Ram and 64-bit OS.

Dad is a "clicker" - meaning he clicks on anything and everything. I'm trying to break him of that, but so far...well...he's having a lot of issues. I have no idea what he's downloaded. My brother *thinks* he fixed it by downloading other junk that didn't work, and now it's worse than before. It's running quite slow, IE closes on itself nearly every time you open it, random pop-ups when you navigate away from the homepage, etc. We use Dell Remote Access when he's away from home in case we run into something I can't talk him through - but we've had a ton of trouble with it and now we can't uninstall it - it gets hung up. I've tried to repair it with no luck, either. Last night I ran AdAware...and now I'm here. You've been so helpful in the past. Any ideas?!

There is also a dell backup thing I don't know what is for. It asks every day if he wants to backup - sometimes he says yes, sometimes no. Is it necessary?? Seems like a lot of wasted space. I have a large iomega external drive I back up his machine on every 3 months...

Oh - I also moved 90GB of movies he shot for his business last night to free up some space - but he has a... Read more

Good evening.

Unfortunately I don't have good news for you. Operating Systems have a useful life that is affected by installations/uninstallations and updates - the more of them you do, the quicker the OS deteriorates. This issue is made worse by the involvement of malware which can corrupt system files to the point that the OS "breaks" in places.

In these cases there is little to be done except to back up important files and then reformat and reinstall Windows. It is something that I tend to do every six months or so to keep the PC fresh and according to one of your logs was last done on 11/20/2006 - nearly five years ago.

In your case you have to add in the problem that you have no knowledge of how the PC was used and hence no way of knowing what files may have got onto the system and what PC settings may have been changed before you bought it. This makes it very difficult to guarantee a successful outcome to any attempt to clean the system and make it secure for the future, and any attempt could in the worst of cases actually see the operating system "break" and your PC rendered useless.

Ok, heres the list of problems ive been having since trying to install windows 7 beta.

-No start menu or task bar

-Cant copy files. Tried to copy explorer file because i thought that might be the problem but cant copy and paste even in same folder. When I tried to copy my saved games and other files so I could just wipe my hard drive they wouldnt copy as well.

-Cant back up anything

-Over half of my processes wont come up. Usually windows task manager has 50+ processes and only 36-38 load on start up

-Cant open up Norton to scan for viruses

I can open internet explorer and view files only because of hot keys on my keyboard

A:Lots of problems... again

Are these problems you are facing in windows 7 or in windows XP because of a failed windows 7 install? If the latter, have you tried a repair install of windows XP using the windows CD?
