Sims 2 suddenly gives white box with white X in red box

Q: Sims 2 suddenly gives white box with white X in red box

I have a new laptop with a gig of Ram and very few programs on it. It runs Vista. I've been building a huge mansion in Sims 2 (basic prog only) and it's run just fine. I have about 17,000 items of CC and it still ran fine.

Yesterday I discovered I could change some settings and make the picture more detailed so I did so. Things looked so much better but as I began having a display driver error message I figured I would see if mine needed updating. I had trouble finding the right one but finally did on the Gateway site. It said my driver is up to date.

Today I was testing out some new CC files and the game began crashing so I worked and found the bad files. The game was working ok.

I began slowly putting some of the files I had removed back in to be tested. I was trying to make it easier by renaming the downloads dir to downloads2 and making a new downloads dir.

At some point, and I can't recall exactly when, I began not even being able to load the game at all. I'd start it and before it even reaches the first screen I began getting this white box with a red box with a white X in it. Nothing else will happen.

1. First I removed the files I'd put into the new downloads dir. No change.
2. Then I deleted the dl dir and renamed the downloads2 dir back to downloads in case there was a conflict, though I couldn't imagine why there would be except they were in the same main directory. No change

This means that the problem has nothing at all to do with the downloads, as the game crashes whether there is any CC in the downloads dir or not.

Now I can only assume there's something wrong with the increased detail settings and the display driver. If this is the problem, then Im really in a quandary as I can't get into the program to change the settings back.

Preferred Solution: Sims 2 suddenly gives white box with white X in red box

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've had the sims 2 game and two expansions, sims 2 pets and nightlife, for about half a year. Everything worked fine until recently I started playing and my sims' skin is all white and covered in codes. Some of the clothes and pets have this problem too. This does not change when I make a new family, change their clothes/appearance, or play a family that came with the game such as the Goths. They've all turned white and coded too. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game and the problem was still there. There are no damages to the discs. I've even tried only installing the Sims 2, in the case that it may be the extensions causing the problem, but with no luck. Any suggestions to my dilemma? Thank you.

My Hp pavilliin g7 series laptop running windows 7 home starts up with white screen and no beeps or sounds . Started freezing on Hp logo screen last week only sometimes. Id turn off and it would work on second try. About a year and a half ago I used laptop to preview windows 8. And after I reinstalled windows 7 it has been acting funny. Ie freezing and louder fan noise. I did recently update the bios and a pci device driver that never installed. But now it has white screen this morning. I shut off and powered up and still white.
I took off battery and pressed power for 10 sec plugged back in and still white. Still no noise.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem. When turning on the laptop screen goes to white, I can hear windows starting but cannot see anything. I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded. I then took the whole laptop apart and discovered the LCD cable was frayed due to a faulty laptop hinge. I replaced the cable and it was the same, just white. The problem I think is with the motherboard and the intergrated video card. Upon taking the whole thing apart I noticed that where the video card plugs in is right where the heat sink is and the cooling fan which gets exceptional hot. I figure it has fried the board to the extend the monitor will not work where it is plugged in, but the external monitor will work but only when windows boots. So sad to say because of the the heat this laptop puts off and if you have it sitting on your lap or bed or anywhere else that it cannot cool properly it has over heated and you will have to get a new motherboard.

A:Laptop screen starts up white and stays white

"I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded"... This is normal behavior because the video signal to the external monitor is not sent until Windows loads. If you can see normal video, the motherboard video chip is good

Computer covers whole screen with either white, or white with black, and blue stripes. Multiple times a day.?
This computer was bought in 2005, (HP Media Center PC). Within the second week this freezing(it freezes, and the screen has a white or white with black and blue stipes) occured( yes second week, my brother was uninformed and thought it was normal and didnt return it. It happened often enough as to save anything you were working on every ten to twenty minutes on a bad day. It settled and slowly became less of a problem, then stoped. One day he got a virus and had to restore the computer, the freezing started up again. same as last time, it settled then stoped, a month later, i recieved this computer as a hand me down, as my brother went to college and got a MAC. That was in mid summer of 2008, a week and a half ago, i got a huge virus, i restored my computer, and the freezing started up again, after not doing it once for over a year. It has gotten as bad as freezing every 30 minutes some nights. And earlier today it froze, i turned off and on my computer, went down stairs, and when i came back it was frozen again. I had not even used and program. Please help if you have any idea whats wrong!
Things to keep in mind...
-It only happened after the computer was restored, or bought(ish)
-Its not a normal freeze where you see the programs on the screen still, the screen goes completely white, or white with black and blue stripes.
-4 years old

A:Screen Freezes and turns white or white with stripes

Then maybe it isn't freezing at all. Maybe there's a problem with your monitor, vga cable, or video card.

Try a different monitor/cable and see if that changes anything. If it doesn't, then try reseating the video card--if any--and if that doesn't work I suggest getting a cheap one from someone's old pc at least to test with.

Installing a new video card can be complicated, but google search for a guide or follow the setup instructions for the video card to the letter and you'll have no problems.

I have Windows Vista SP1, Home premium, 32 bit on my laptop and lately it has been doing a very strange thing. All of a sudden my screen goes completely white, and the only way to get rid of it is to hit the "show desktop" button on my keyboard, then right click the button that has appeared on my taskbar that says "blank page-Internet Explorer", and click "close" from the menu. Why is it doing this? Can anybody help me?

I was talking with people on bleepingcomputer.com about this but we never found an answer. I have ran several recommended scans, and one scan found a trojan and deleted it, however, the blank page is still happening, and with even more frequency than before.

Oh, I also tried updating my video driver (at their instruction) and I'm not positive that I did this correctly, as nothing on the list was actually called a "video" driver, and I'm not completely literate with computers..lol, so I updated something like..NVDIA...or something like that.
Thank you, Karen

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately from looking at your photo, it looks like the LCD screen is cracked and will have to be replaced.    Luckily they are not too expensive (about $39.00 USD), can be fairly easily sourced, and are not too hard to replace.   The site below sells the screens, and has videos showing how to replace the screens for most models. https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/series/IBM-Lenovo/IDEAPAD/ Take Care,

Ever since I got this notebook, all I've had are problems, and HP has never been able to resolve a single problem. It's like the warranty is completely meaningless. They didn't even replace defective parts, let alone replace the entire notebook.I've had problems with the hard disk, and was told we can't solve this problem as this is a problem with every envy notebook.I've had a problem where dust is building up inside the screen (between the screen and the external glass cover), and I was told I need to send the notebook to the service centre (even though I have an "on-site, at home service warranty? for 3 effing years). This one time, one HP tech even told me "ENVY NOTEBOOKS DON'T SUPPORT VLC PLAYER, YOU MUST PLAY MULTIMEDIA USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER ALONE". NOW, I have a white line appearing on the top corner of the screen, and HP said I need to take a picture of the problem in the BIOS. The BIOS itself has a white background. How can I click a picture of a white line on a white background? If I write with white ink on a white paper, can anyone read it? I explained this precisely, and was told "Since the issue is not present in BIOS, we need to check if this can be covered in the warranty". WELL, THE ISSUE IS PRESENT IN THE BIOS, IT?S JUST THAT IT CANNOT BE SEEN AS IT?S WHITE ON WHITE, AND YOU WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS AND NOT REPLACE MY LCD? The issue is present in live linux USB sticks as well! All you need to reproduce it is a DARK BACKGROUND. ... Read more

When I watched something on my PC last night, sound was working fine.
Didn't turn computer off (was left running another 15 or so ours, roughly 22 hours total) when I went to bed, woke up to find that my computer won't play sound but rather white noise / static whenever a sound should be played.

I've checked my headphones, they also output static, so I'm sure that it's the PC that has a problem. I've tried plugging the speakers into different jacks with no success. I've formatted my drive, (with the exception of my backup partition, could there be a virus causing this on there?), re-installed XP as well as trying an install of Windows 7 and nothing has changed.

Wondering if anybody can help, or is my sound card broken and if so, can you recommend a cheap one?

Hi, as per my Topic Title, my computer Monitor has been randomly going to a black backround with a white box for mouse cursor, for no apparent reason.I'm running Windows XP SP3 and my Custom Computer's Hardware/Security Software information can be found on my Profile - if i should post it here as well, i'd be happy to - just ask.The odd thing is that the box still moves when i move my mouse, so it's clearly not a hard-lock of the system - i can ctrl-alt-del alt-u r to restart the system when it happens, rather than being forced to resort to the reset button on the case.In the past, i have also had a pink checkered backround, as well as a green backround, both with the same white box for the mouse cursor - unfortunately, however, i did not get a video of them, and those backround colors have not happened since.I'm inclined to believe the root cause *may* be hardware or software settings related, but as i am far more concerned about it being caused by an infection, i felt i would post here, first.Hopefully that's ok.I have looked over Windows' Event Viewer, Norton's Security History, run EVGA's OC Scanner (even tho i do not overclock), run Memtest86+ (just one pass), and run MemtestG80-1.1 all to no avail - nothing in Windows' Event Viewer, Norton's Security History, no Artifacts/errors in EVGA's OC Scanner, Memtest86+ came back fine, as did MemtestG80-1.1 .Here is a video i took of the issue with a digital camera and uploaded, in... I have read and tried many different suggestions, but I have no idea what is going on. The white on my dad's laptop is showing up with thin aqua vertical stripes in it. I have tried many different things (system restore, updating drivers, etc) and nothing has worked. I canít find any reference to your camera. Iím guessing it might be a Mavica, but I think they all have FD designations and I see no FD 63 either. A 3.5 inch floppy holds 1.44Mb total. That makes for some pretty small images. If you just want to display images online it is sufficient.

What you need is some lighting from the side to make some shadows. A movie light might work if you move it back a way and also maybe use the camera flash. A small halogen work light would work as well if you have one of those. They have remote flash units that arenít pricey that are triggered by the camera flash. You could put one of those to the side, but you might have to lower the EV if the camera doesnít have TTL metering.

You might want to lower the EV a little in any case if your camera allows that. It is easy to burn out the highlights and not be able to recover them in software. You might want to bracket the EV as it might want to lower it on its own with all that white in the picture.

Digital pictures are cheap. Take lots of pictures with different settings and whatever lighting you have at different angles and distances. But you need to get some lighting other than the camera flash.

It sounds to me like the dropping the keyboard is a red herring.

It is more likely that the colour temperature of one of your monitors has shifted with age. Get yourself a monitor calibration tool, I use the Huey pro relatively cheap or you could go for something more expensive like a Spyder or similar. You need one that copes with two monitors, then use the device to adjust your monitors properly.

Hi. And thanks for reading this post.
Description: Windows 7 Starter (netbook) loads , desktop is visible for about 30 seconds, then is taken over by a white screen with a submit box on the right bottom portion of the screen. Other than a one-line warning that says "You have 30 seconds to connect to the internet," there are no other messages or directions. I suspect it is some type of flawed ransomware, with an intelligent, very well-hidden code.
From a USB, using command prompt, I've tried several dozen malware scanners including HitmanPro and MalwareBytes without success.
The computer was infected on 11/18/15 and the virus seems to have deleted any previous restore point(s).
The white screen virus locks up Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. The white screen also launches when trying to use explorer.exe or opening up notepad to save a file to the desktop. Tried to use a new user account to bypass the virus, but the white screen locks up the new user account in the same way.
Safe Mode with Command Prompt works.
I am thankful to be here for some professional help and look forward to the learning experience.
I followed Bleeping Computer's directions and uploaded the relevant logs from a recently run Farbar scan.

I have had 3 different people now tell me conflicting things about wiring cat 5 2 of which are qualified networking people, (I'm not, I'm just dabbliung and trying to sort out my home)

When wiring up a patch cable, 1 person said it has to be in the following order due to the green and greenwhite white being transmit wires or something..?
(not sure about the order of then greens and blues but it was roughly that)

The other person said he does it like this purely for convention, and the 2nd netwoking guy said it doesnt matter as long as they are the same at either end. and for crossover you just reverse the sequence.
I'd be enclined to o with the it doesnt matter which order, as they are only wires the colour of a wire doesnt meen jack surely. its just to help you get the order correct... no? its like people who say you shouldnt do 123456 in the lotto as thatll never come up... well newsflash its statistically the same as getting 6 randomly ordered numbers.

I'm getting a White Box on the upper left hand corner of my desktop I shut off the moniter and that clears it for awhile, then it pops back on....

A:white box

Hi there,

Take a print screen and paste it into paint and see if the box remains, if it does save the image and post it as an attachement in your next reply.

This will help to diagnose your problem.

If it doesnt remain when you take a print screen, then can you take a photo of your monitor with a camera and upload the photo.

Either way it will help to see what the issue is in first hand.

I have this strange little white box in the top left my my screen, it's basically a dead spot on my desktop.

My windows cover it normally like it was a part of my desktop, but I can't right click on it as if it were my desktop.

I'm not sure if this is a Vista problem, a glitch or what. I don't even think its harmful... just annoying. I've changed monitors, wallpapers, and done the SP1 upgrade for vista. It does not go away when the PC is restarted, its a factory made HP tower with an upgraded video card. I don't know if it started before or after I installed the video card. The card is an ATI 1650 series.

(Box is covered normally by windows, as you can see in the second image)

Thats the top left corner of my desktop with the box. It's always in the same spot.

Its been there at least 6months and I regularly virus/ad-ware scans so I believe its nothing major. Any info is much appreciated.

its probably just a pixel thats gone, i dont think its anything to worry about.

Is there a way I can get rid of the white box around the icon's text in the desktop. I have Windows 2000, and I just want the text with nothing behind it but the wallpaper I have chosen, not these annoying white boxes underneath each icon. I'm wondering if it's a setting that somehow got changed because even when I go on the internet, every page has a white background but the text still has color. Are these problems related somehow and if so, how can I fix them? Any help at all regarding this big-*** posting would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

If you have taken anything out of startups via msconfig please go to Start Ė Run Ė type in msconfig Ė click OK and click on the Startup tab. Click on Enable All then Apply and OK. Then please do the following:

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I was playing Sims 2 and everything was fine, then suddenly everything went very slow, I mean unbearably slow. The thing is, it's only confined to one household, and it had been working fine before. I tried restarting the game and the computer and that didn't help.

Good evening. OK, the situation you find yourself in is as follows - your hard drive has an area on it that is known as the Master Boot Record. The nasty that you have picked up looks like it has altered the MBR and ideally we would undo the changes to solve the problem.Unfortunately it isn't quite as easy as typing this and the usual option we go with is to replace your infected Master Boot Record with a standard one, which doesn't guarantee to put everything right. Some computer manufacturers use custom MBRs which allow boot access to options such as Factory Restore and this infection will render these unavailable until the custom MBR is written back to the hard drive - an issue which a standard MBR won't solve. If the custom MBR problem affects you, and your only recovery option is Factory Restore as the PC manufacturer didn't supply you with a Windows Recovery Disc, you should contact them and see if they are willing to supply you with this disc. Without it you will be unable to repair/reinstall Windows in the future should the need arise. There is a method of repairing the Dell MBR that is available, once we get the nasty removed, but it is still better to have an installation disc to fall back on.The worst-case scenario with overwriting the MBR to clean the infection is that the PC becomes unbootable and you have what is in effect an expensive paperweight, which, although unlikely, needs to be mentioned. While this won't actually physically break anyth... Read more

I was looking up things on the internet and then I got this pop up about some antivirus. I tried to close it, but it started down loading things. Now I am being directed to other web sites. I have Malwarebytes instaled. When I did the scan it came up that I had trojan and malware virus. I thought I removed them, but I am still having issues with pop ups and blue screens. I also tried to restore my computer and it is not allowing me to restore it.

Since nobody else has come forward I would sugget you try this. You didn't mention system restore. Have you tried that?

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature

To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:

Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Hey, I was just infected with a whole bunch of fake antispyware programs (ave.exe, usrprot.exe, and other duplicating ones). After managing to clear them (as far as I know they seem to be all gone), I'm left with this white box in the corner of my screen and am wondering how to get rid of it.There doesn't appear to be a process for it.Thanks in advance, if you need a HiJack this log or my list of processes I'll get them here asap.

I would like you to start a new thread and post a DDS log HERE and include a link to this thread. Please make sure that you read the information about getting started before you start your thread. It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!
