Hi all, I recently purchased a T460s with some upgrades on the specifications (RAM 16 GB, GPU GeForce 930M and etc.). The initial operating system was set to Windows 7, so I upgraded to Windows 10 64 bit. I manually downloaded all the drivers required for this laptop and windows 10. While everything else runs pretty well, the keyboard backlight does not seem to work. I haven't checked if the backlight works on the previous operating system, so I am unsure if the problem is actually from the hardwares or if the OS was updated wrong. I am pretty sure that this model supports the keyboard backlit function since the space bar has that little image on the left side that (I'm guessing) indicates the function of backlit keyboards. I'm wondering if there are actual drivers that I must intall prior to pressing the (Fn+Spacebar) keys to turn on the backlight, or if there is a problem with my computer. If it's the case of the latter, I am thinking about resetting my laptop (reinstalling windows 10). Being aware of how long it takes to download and install all the necessary components, once I do, is there any method of backing up the computer and after the reset just using that backup to go back to the original state where I have all my programs and data? Thanks.Read other answers
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
I have recently bought a T460s ThinkPad and I would like to know if its keyboard is backlit. I tried to turn it on using Fn+Space Bar but it did not work. The user guide merely says that backlit keyboards are present on selected models. My model number is 20fa000qbr. Thanks!
Does your space bar have a small white cartoon of a lamp on its left edge? That would indicate an illuminated keyboard. If not it probably is not.Read other 1 answers

Hi there. I need the part no. of a T460s backlit keyboard for use in Chile. Anyone know where I can find it?
Welcome to the forum!
You can find the part list in this document: click me!
Keyboard list starts on page 5, although the backlit models start on page 6. I'm not so sure which one will be the Chilean one, I guess "ES" is for Spanish layouts, like this example: "TH-KBD,ES,CHY,BL"
I hope this helps!
Hello, I bought the Thinkpad P50 about a month ago and I got all that I needed on it, except I forgot to check the box to get it with the backlit keyboard. I have already bought the backlit keyboard from an online store (part #: 00PA288), but I just want to make sure that there is no issue with me installing it on my Thinkpad P50. That is, the hardware/software is fully compatible with the backlit keyboard even if it did not originally come with it? Thanks,Tony.Read other answers
I recently purchased a Lenovo X230 tablet PC (3435-24U) and I love it.
After MUCH debate with Lenovo, however, I think I have determined this: While the unit has a symbol for a light (either backlight on keyboard or thinklight on screen) on the spacebar, this particular model does not have that feature.
1. It's a shame because it's a great feature, and I hope my diagnosis is wrong, but when I press the function key and space bar together, I get no light, and get a symbol on the screen of a light with a circle/slash through it. Seems like no light to me, yes?
2. As a fallback, I see that X230 BACKLIT replacement keyboards are available for under $50 on the internet and wondered if any of you had any luck switching out a non-lit keyboard for a lit one, either by yourself or with professional help.
Any insight on either issue would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the same boat. Recently bought an X230T and thought I was getting a backlit keyboard only to find it is not.I found a vendor on Amazon that has the keyboard, and am considering the $35 gamble on buying it and trying it.I've tried decoding the FRU numbers that Lenovo uses to verify I am getting the keyboard I need/want, but those things have about the worst description ever.Otherwise I'm loving the machine.Read other 6 answers
Hi all, I've read a couple of postings but have not found a solution for my problem regarding an upgraded backlit keyboard for my E531 which shows no backlight. I installed the keyboard an connected the two flat cables to the mainboard. Other notebook seems to use additional cables for backlighting, but this one seems not to. Unfortunately there is no backlight turning on. When I press Fn + Space instead a space character is typed. There is a lighting key marked on the left side of the space bar model type is KM BL-106D0, FRU is 04Y2399. Any ideas? DoI need to make some settings or adjustments? I bought the keyboard on Ebay, it was marked as compatible with my E531. Kind regardsKlaus
I am also having this problem, did you get an answer?I upgraded my non-backlit keyboard to the backlit style, and it is working perfectly except for the back light. Is this keyboard part number incompatible with this motherboard?Read other 1 answers
Hello everybody, just purchased a Z50-70 and am pleased so far. However, the A**zon product specifications stated it would have a backlit keyboard (bought the 59424714). Up to now I have not been able to switch it on (Fn+space doesn't work) and/ or find any settings for it. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!
Make sure all drivers are installed and up to date, also check bios settings just to double check everything is ok in there.

After installing an ssd recently, the backlighting on my keyboard no longer works. Every other button on the keyboard works normally, including the other built in function keys like mute, brightness, etc. I might have messed up some connection, but I didn't take the keyboard off at all to install the ssd, which was installed without issue itself. Another thought is that it might be a driver, since its a fresh drive and windows install. I don't really know what to look for though, so any thoughts you might have to help would be appreciated.Read other answers
I have recently replaced my laptop's bezel. Since then backlit is not working even though the settings are correct. Could this issue be due to bezel replacement. If yes, please suggest how to resolve it
I assume that removed both the keyboard and palm rest first to remove the LCD assembly and finally the LCD bezel. I would go back and check the keyboard and make sure that both the keyboard data and back lite cables are connected correctly. The manual doesn't show a back lit keyboard, but on back lit keyboards there are two cables that will need to be connected.
Hello I am having issues with my HP ENVY x2 - 13-j000na (ENERGY STAR). The keyboard will only work when attached to the screen in a very specific position. Changing the angle of the screen results ini it disconnecting and being unable to reconnect. When not attached to the screen it will not work at all.I still have warranty and would really like this sorted ASAP as it is incredibly annoying. I've tried all the recommendations of updating BIOS and drivers etc and still nothing. Can anyone help? Thanks.
It's a hardware issue and is going to have to be addressed by making a warranty claim. There is no adjustment or quick setting fix we can provide.Read other 3 answers
I have the S50-B-15P model with Windows 10 installed. I never checked if the backlit keyboard worked on Windows 8.1, as soon as I got it I upgraded to Windows 10.
I have installed all the drivers from the Toshiba Windows 10 upgrade page however as before the keyboard works just not backlit!
I opened the eco utility software and checked for the keyboard backlit settings under eco mode however it does not exist and no setting exists in the BIOS either. The keyboard does have the symbol to enable the backlit function on the Z key however pressing FN + Z does nothing.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this? Does the keyboard even have this function or is it faulty?
I have the same problem as its with you
my laptop is Satellite S50T-B1391 which is new just 4 days I check every thing like you Fn+Z is not working the bios is new version and nothing is there also nothing about backlit in eco utility app
I check it in win 8.1 before upgrading and win 10 all have the same problem
I have a new Dell XPS 13 Linux edition (this one) and immediately installed Linux Mint 18 on it, wiping the Ubuntu 14.04 which was shipped with the it.
I am really confident with it, only the backlight for the keyboard is not working. I have a keyboard light symbol on my F10 key but when I press it, nothing happens. All other features and all other media controls/media keys/screen brightness keys work. When clicking the battery icon in the Linux Mint taskbar, I see 2 controls, one for the keyboard lights brightness and one for the screen brightness. When I drag those bars, only the screen brightness is working again.
I also see the settings in /sys/class/leds/dell\:\:kbd_backlight/ (I think that's the config folder for it). The brightness file in this directory contains "1", so as I understand this correctly, this should theoretically work.
As I noted before I immediately installed Linux Mint on it, so I can't say whether it worked before. And this is really the only thing which is not working on the laptop.
I have obviously checked that my ultrabook has backlights with the product number on its back.
Do you have some tips so I can get this to work? Thanks in advance!
I just received my new XPS 13 9350 and the backlit keyboard never worked.. the only light i can see is from the caps lock...
I've no idea whether this is a hardware problem or just some driver problem...
I've tried the BIOS setting but nothing changed. And the Windows Mobility Center didn't show anything about keyboard backlight..
Thank you for writing to us! You can use the F6 key combination to enable or disable backlight.
Hoping this helps!
I am a new user and I am really desperate to get the backlit keyboard working on my Satellite P850, normally it wouldn't be a problem but I spend a lot of time in low light situations and it would be so very helpful to me, it was also a feature that swayed me to purchase a model laptop with the ability to have a backlit keyboard.
If anyone could help me,I would be forever grateful
After updating to windows 10 I noticed that the keyboard backlit didn't turn on no matter if I was pressing FN+Space bar. After several months of trying to solve this problem I came in contact with Microsoft tech support and I was told that my system doesn't seem to be compatibe with Windows 10 and I should downgrade back to Windows 8 in order to solve this problem. After doing that and installing many updates and drivers it still doesn't work. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can help.Read other answers
For some reason, I cannot get the backlit keyboard to work on my new X1 Carbon Touch. It lights up upon powering up and then will not turn on no matter how many times I hit the space bar. I don't see an option to enable/disable anywhere either. Am I missing a driver? Thanks in advance.
Go to Solution.
Be sure to hold the Fn key while pressing the Spacebar to turn on the backlit keyboard. If you have already tried this to no avail, then I would recommend checking some BIOS settings. To enter BIOS, reboot the machine. When it is powering back up and you see the Lenovo splash screen, tap the Enter key repeatedly. A menu should appear. When it does, press F1 to enter BIOS. Once here, navigate to Config ? Keyboard/Mouse and check the settings of Fn and Ctrl Key swap and Fn Key Lock. For purposes of this test, make sure they are both set to Disabled. Once done, press F10 to save and exit. The machine should now boot normally. Log in to Windows and try to activate the backlight again and see if that works.
Best of luck,

First of all the support section on Lenovos website must be the most confusing I've ever experienced. I can't find anywhere to send a simple email asking a question. When I enter my product serial at http://support.lenovo.com/ I cant use either email or chat because for some reason those options are not available for my product!I did try to call them, but they don't understand anything. No technical knowledge. So my last option was to register for this forum and hope someone can help me. (Even the forum didn't seem to be updated as there was no section for my model, ideapad 700, only up to 500) Anyway my question is that my backlit keyboard is not working for my Lenovo 700 15ISKYes I fully understand I have to activate it by Fn + Spacebar. But nothing happens. My spacebar has the symbol for backlit keyboard. I was confused at first because I've read that some configurations of Ideapad 700 15ISK does not have backlit keyboard. Sadly, I do not remember if the backlit keyboard worked on 8.1 with the SSD. Hello!I've been using my Latitude E6410 for a few years now and it's by far the best laptop I've ever had.Recently, my backlit keyboard stopped working. It's something that you don't appreciate enough until you lose it... :) So I got a new backlit keyboard for it and installed it, but it still doesn't work.I wonder if it could be a problem that's unrelated to the keyboard itself - maybe some motherboard issue / bios bug / whatever. Or maybe the new keyboard I got has its backlit feature broken.Any ideas? Please note it's been my computer for a while now, so I know all about how to activate it (alt+right arrow / bios setting). also note that it doesn't work even before the OS loads, where it used to work perfectly earlier.Thank you very much!Read other answers
This morning my HP Omen arrived in the mail, fully functional with everything in tact. After I left my laptop to install the updates from the HP Support Assistant (One of those updates being a BIOS update), I came back to find my computer restarted and my backlit keyboard not working. After trying to use the HP OMEN Control to fix the keyboard, I found that the keyboard will flash briefly when I click "Apply To All Zones", but then immediately turns off again. Is there any way to fix this Backlit Keyboard issue ir can we see an update in the near future that fixes this issue?

I've tried downloading the latest bios and resetting the keyboard options in OMEN CONTROL as well as pressing the F5 button but nothing works. The speaker lights are working fine and can still be customized through CONTROL however the rest of the keyboard won't light up regardless of whatever color or zones I choose through OMEN. I've read in the forum that other users have had this problem after a bios update and clicking th F5 has worked for some users but it still has not for me. My laptop just fell out of the one year warranty and it would be disheartening to lose the ability of a backlit keyboard for a $2000 laptop just because of a bios update. Any advice is appreciated! Hello everyone,I'm new on here and I'm in the process of upgrading my laptop. Ram, ssd etc. I've seen backlit keyboards for sale claiming to be compatible and I am wondering is this a possible upgrade?Any help is welcome.Thanks.
OK here is the Service Manual: Manual The keyboards are not sold by HP as a separate part: only sold with the whole top cover. See p. 20 The Manual does not list any keyboard/top cover as having a backlight. However, the keyboard map on p. 15 shows the f5 action key as activating a backlight on "select models". From this I gather that there is a place on the motherboard to connect a backlight cable if the keyboard has one. However, extracting the old keyboard from the top cover and replacing it with just the replacement keyboard is not easy and there are no directions in the Manual for that procedure. I would want to see one of these alleged backlit keyboards. Bottom line, it is possible, but I would be leery. Do you have an f5 action key with the backlight symbol on it? Have you tried it to see if maybe your keyboard is backlit? If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.Read other 2 answers

If your computer is a "desktop" computer, it should be a "no-brainer".The USB port on your computer would supply power to the keyboard to run the back-lights. But, since you have a notebook, you'll have to find a keyboard that physically matches the size of your current keyboard, and then hope that the notebook's motherboard will supply electrical power to the back-lights.This sounds like a tough task!
