Xp Pro Load......copying Files......missing Some Files...

Q: Xp Pro Load......copying Files......missing Some Files...

I'm trying to load xp pro on a machine using two seperate, brand new hard drives and each time it had failed at the very beginning during the "copying files" phase.

I have also tried two seperate xp pro disks...................

I wrote the files it is missing down....and sure as heck cant find it now......

is this a hardware issue?

Preferred Solution: Xp Pro Load......copying Files......missing Some Files...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've just installed the Win7 RC on my lab-pc. It's a 2,4GHz Celeron, 1GB DDR-RAM, everything installend on some old 160GB PATA-HDD. Two hi-speed USB Keys are used for ReadyBoost (love that feature).

Everything works like a charm, except the file transfer from my WXP machine.

I mount the SMB share (which is on my WXP) from the W7 machine and start to copy some big files. Transfer speed is ~1MB/sec on 10MBit, ~5MB/sec on 100MBit and ~11MB/sec on 1GBit. When I start file transfer the CPU load pops up to 50% while 10MBit is active, for 100 and 1000MBit it jumps to 100% and stays there until the transfer is over.

Since I read about IRQ issues I tried some NICs. An onboard SiS-900, an RTL8139 based PCI card and an Intel Pro 1000/MT Desktop adapter. I thought that - at last - the Intel NIC should stop my problems as it comes with IRQ moderation and TCP/UDP checksum offload.

None of these 3 NICs solved my problem.

All these NICs run on the driver W7 has found for them. None of the vendors had a special driver for me.

What I tried to do in addition:

- disable W7 firewall
- disable IPv6
- disable QoS
- tried another CAT5e cable
- restart the switch (Netgear GS108)
- hit the whole machine

Note of the above worked.

I just hope you just have an idea left for me. Just ask if I missed out some details.

I went into an image folder, right clicked on a image, and selected copy. I then left the folder to paste the image in another spot. Well for some reason when I went back into the folder I copied the image from everything in it was gone.
I first checked the recycle bin but there wasn't anything there. I'm assuming it is due to the file being large sized. It was full of photoshop images my husband had worked on. That is the main reason I'm worried they are gone. We did have some files I backed up but haven't done it in a while.
I tried doing the Previous Versions tab but there wasn't nothing. I checked hidden files and nothing. I then tried a system restore and then undid it since it didn't help.
I'm out of ideas to try. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Hi everyone,

I am running into an issue I have never seen. I had a friends laptop that i was upgrading from windows 7. I took out his hard drive and plugged it into my windows 8 machine and backed up the files to my pc and then formatted and installed windows 8.

Once I got it all back up i setup the user profile Matt and then took the hard drive back out the laptop and plugged it into my machine to copy the (my docs, my music, my photos, etc.) back to the laptop drive. So i sat and waited for 2 hours while it copied 100GB back to the laptop drive. Once it finished i plugged the drive back into the laptop and when i booted into windows 8, non of the files appear... Nothing!

The computer doesnt even register that i copied 100GB onto the hard drive. It shows only that i am using 30GB of the 500GB drive which is not the case. When i took the drive out and plugged it into my machine to test, everything showed up as it was. So I confirmed i did copy the 100GB to the laptop drive. But when i put it back into the laptop, nothing shows up...

What could be causing this to happen? Is is because when i had it hooked to my desktop (windows 8) it was using my profile and hid the files? I am stumped... any help would be great.

on a side note... when i goto the bottom left start square that pops up.. and i right click on it. None of the (computer management, device manager, event viewer, etc.) options don't appear. Could the profile be corrupt?

A:files missing after copying to computer

Hi there, i know this is frustrating but I have a few questions first..

Can you verify that his data is in your backup folder and is complete?

Where did you copy his backed up data to?

Did you use windows explorer or another program to copy the files?

Copying files to system folders like MY DOCUMENTS, MY PICTURES, etc.. can be tricky

Its possible you may have copied them to the shortcut of MY DOCUMENTS which will actually copy it to YOUR MY DOCUMENTS because the system sees those shortcuts as %USERPROFILE%\My Documents instead of D:\user\my documents for example.

The difference being one is on the system's drive and the other on a different drive.

Check your folders to see if they have been copied there instead.

To see his actual drive from your computer, the path will be (drive\Users\Matt\My Documents..... etc..

If you go to his drive from your computer and just click MY DOCUMENTS, you will be looking at yours..

Let us know what youve found, and well get his data back where it belongs..

Hello all,

I'm running a genuine copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I just completed a fresh install (with MS's help) and now I'm reinstalling all my files and programs. I have copied the "My Documents" folder from a backup drive to another drive. However, I noticed that in the source drive there are "214 items" but in the destination drive there are only "144 items". This is my second attempt at trying to move the files from one drive to another. The first time I copied the times, only 114 items copied over.

This doesn't make sense. Maybe because there are too many files or it's too large of data for the clipboard? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

So, I've had this 2TB external hard drive for a while. I'd say about 3 years, maybe a little more at the most. It started when I was downloading some mods for one of my favorite games. I was making backups of the files just in case anything didn't work and I needed the original. So, after about 2 or 3 days of modding. I noticed my game would stop at the loading screen, music stopped too and the game did absolutely nothing but just sit there. Wasn't frozen, just waiting. I thought this was quite odd, but I didn't think much of it considering I was modding and changing files all the time (even if I did keep them straight and knew what I was doing).

So I re-installed the game without any mods, tried to load the game and play. Same thing and I thought it was related to the game itself until I noticed.. Windows 7 was checking the drive (and fixing, every time) errors on that hard drive every single boot when something on the drive had been changed. Windows must be detecting issues when writing files and thus, checking the drive. But it's weird, there's always just a few files missing. I've tried other games (installed them) and got the same result.

I haven't used this drive much. In fact, it used to be used for data storage. I know there aren't any issues with installing games to external hard drives. I've done it many times. The drive also runs off of a external SATA (eSATA).

Anyone have any ideas? The drive doesn't c... Read more

hi... got a used dell inspiron 2400(dimension) for $65 off of craigslist. it has a wd drive (150-200gb?) and xp and it works.
my old computer is an hp pavilion, with a wd caviar 320gb hd with xp pro sp2. i want to use the larger drive on the dell as master.

what i was thinking, is that i can put the small drive as slave on the hp, copy my files to it, see if they work on the dell, then format the large drive, put it as master on the dell, and reinstall xp. then, slave the small drive to copy over the files again.

if there's a better way, please let me know. i'm using the large drive on hp pavilion until i can find a reliable way to transfer files.

btw, i would also like to know if there's a trick to get the copied files working smoothly with a fresh xp.

A:copying files to another drive, format 1st, then replace files

If the goal is simply to use the larger drive as a boot drive on the other system...seems to me that simply deleting everything on the larger drive...then cloning the smaller drive to it...then replacing smaller with larger...accomplishes that.

Once convinced that the clone waas successful and boots, then I would delete everything on the smaller drive and re-partition it, using it for storage capacity.

There are various programs to do this sort of cloning, including EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition freeware. - http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm . As with any program...read the instructions for use before attempting to use.

okay this is probably going to be long, but hopefully someone can help me. I had mega computer problems and a very good computer tech got me to this point, but he is at "Bikefest" and hate to keep him tied up on the phone. Here goes.

First of all run w2000

Computer crashed and w2000 was in a constant reboot with the "kiss of death blue screen" right before it was to load the desktop. With friend's help finally got into safe mode, local machine,... crash control etc and finally got the desktop to come up but i had to taskbar at the bottom, no start, time, etc. finally got that back, but a problem that still persists is i have no icons when i open my computer. w2000 help will not load, control panel gives script errors.

I have already re-install ie6 and updated W2000 for service pack 4. He suggested i uninstall zone alarm and Mcafee due to corruption when loading. i was able to uninstall zone alarm, but cannot do McAfee because control panel will not work. no icon, i can get into it through start and can see the icon but when click to remove program get script error various ones such as gtimer undefined, controlp.htt

Not sure if fully explained everything but hopefully have given enough information. Oh yeah, on task bar, where the icon for desktop is there is just the basic windows icon and the shortcut does not work either

I tried doing this. Example.... game files/data from my XPdocs on C: to my win7 docs on D:.... couldnt do it, just gave me a chime, no dialogue box or anything. Also tried to move a file from my desktop to either mydocs or to program files folder, same thing. After that, even took ownership of all affected folders/files, ones being moved and destination folder. Still the same.

Question: is there some type of security setting i am missing? anyone else test this? I have moved files to mydocs before, and now i cant move anything to there.... has me confused now. Nothing special about a file or folder i am trying to move, permissions ect.

Tried both cut and paste, and copy, same problem either way. No protected files/folders involved

A:copying files to mydocs or program files

I can extract a zip/rar to mydocs or program files, but not manually just cut/paste or copy files to there... not just mydocs, but music folder, pictures... anywhere now it seems.... am able to save a downloaded file to those locations. confused

[edit] only recent app installations include powerISO, cod2 and Qtracker (game browser) since this problem has started. Dont think any of those should have affected or caused this problem. Also, yes, i am admin

I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection.    It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues.  Does the original file (.doc for example)  get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2.  If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

I have been trying to encrypt a folder using PGP 9.0.6 and Cryptainer Secure It 3.1.7.

What's weird is that the folder and the files within it will not encrypt and I don't know why? Further more the folder will actually be missing files. Can anybody explain to me? No, I am not setting the applications to erase files after completion.

PGP Conventional Encryption has worked finally. I tried all the obvious stuff first like closing all non-essential volumes (virtual disk that are created and encrypted by PGP), transferring the files to another drive, etc.

On a slightly separate issue. I did have some data corruption involving an older and separate group of files. However I deemed that to a hardware failure or a OS/Software failure. Figured it might provide valid insight.

Update: Now my PGP conventional encryption, non .exe file generation worked. I don't understand why it wouldn't work? Going to rename the source folder and try again. MY encrypted .exe file generation with PGP should work.

I tried again. PGP conventional encryption and PGP Zip both encrypted fine. I tried creating a PGP .exe file and again it failed and files are missing; why?

I've done a full virus scan and spyware scan. No known threats detected that would cause this. I've done two system wipes in the past months. I've also removed, reinstalled, and or repaired the installation of both a... Read more

I've had this computer (HP Pavilion dv2000)for about 4 years and despite my best efforts it's started to get a little bogged down.. SO a while ago I used some free registry cleaning software (Eusing Registry Cleaner, Window Registry Repair & Registry Repair Wizard 2011) to try to get rid of clutter on my lap top in hopes that it would run a little better. I know, I know, let me save everyone the time of telling how stupid it was to do this when I don't know that much about computers! SO as you can imagine after my little cleaning spree I started having some weird problems but mostly related to Internet Explorer. I tried to undo whatever I did but nothing worked. I actually had to stop using IE all together because I kept getting errors and couldn't get to some websites at all. It seemed to be a security setting issue but no matter what changes I made nothing would fix it. So I switched to Firefox which has been a lot better but not perfect. So now its pretty obvious that my computer is missing some files? .... drivers? ....something because I am basically unable to execute most setup files that I download and my Norton anti-virus seems to not be able to run its periodic scans correctly. Lately the computer seems to be worse, buggy, slow, freezes up and I suspect that there is a virus somewhere but no virus scan, adware scan, etc. that I've been able to run (Spy Bot, Bit Defender) finds anything and I'm to afraid to even look at the registry now... Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

A:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by

I have some mp3 files on my pc, which I wanted on my phone. There are about 52 of them, all in the same folder. I connected my phone to my pc, and opened source, and destination folders. I selected all 52 files on my pc, and dragged them to the destination folder. The pc made a 'clicking' sort of noise, as thought it was going through each file, similar to when you are scrolling through a long list, then 'pinged' as it got to the end of the list, but no files were copied over. I tried with one single file, and got the 'ping' again, but no copied file. Also, the speaker/volume icon, sometimes does nothing when I click on it, so I can't control the volume. I have to re-boot for it to work again. I know this is two different problems, but I think they are both Windows 10 related.

Thank you so much for reading, any replies greatly appreciated

A:Copying Files Log?

check date accessed.

open explorer and right click on Name. Click More, then check "Date Accessed".

obviously if you've accessed those files since you think they were copied, this won't help.

I am not sure if this is a bug or if I have to "turn something on" or what. I didn't see it in the lists of things that are missing:

I was moving some files from one drive to another. Identical files. What I discovered is Windows 7 defaults to making a copy (adding -copy at the end of the file name) instead of asking you whether you want to "copy and replace" (overwrite) the other file as was done in Vista. This also occurs if I move a file from one folder to another within the same drive.

I looked in file/folder options but I don't see anything to change this.

A:Copying Files Bug?

Strange I have not had that problem, you should send Microsoft some feedback on the problem.

Look into updating your chipset drivers to latest possible.

Open an elevated command prompt and copy/paste this, hit enter:

chkdsk /r C:

Run that for each partition on the system, changing C to match the letter.

You could try to install TeraCopy. It may do something better for you.

If you have AVG uninstall that from the system and do not just disable. Uninstall any other antivirus you may have, as a test if needed.

Lately when trying to copy, move, delete, or open multiple files they just start copying themselves. For example, if I try moving say a dozen photos to another folder by holding down ctrl and clicking multiple photos, (or ctrl+a to select all) I will end up with several copies of each photo in the orginal folder. If I only highlight 4 or fewer this doesn't happen.

This is on an XP home SP2 box, 2.5 ghz p4, 512mb ram, 80 gb and 60 gb hds. I have checked several times for viruses and spyware using diffrent scanners and everything comes up clean.

This even happens when trying to import photos from a camera, unless I just click and drag the whole folder in to my photo folder.

What can be causing this and what can I do to fix it?

A:Self Copying Files

This commonly happens when you get in a hurry and become a bit sloppy with the mouse. Be sure you are holding the mouse *perfectly* still when you select the items. If you move it between the left click down and release, windows interprets that as a desire to make a copy of the file - and does so.

Running xp pro. I want to copy files to an external hard drive and would like the files to be checked for errors. Is there a program that does this? Windows backup does that but to access the files you have to reinstall them in the original folder and drive? I also have heard that jpeg files lose bits of data each time there used or transferred and changing them to avi or something similar would be better? Is this true or what would be best and how would one do that? Thanks Geo.

I'm pretty new to Windows 7. I have an external hard drive, and I can't seem to copy files from the C drive to the external. Is there something in the settings that I need to change?

A:Copying Files

Copying files to an external hard drive is no different than copying to any other folder. Copy and paste. Drag and drop. If it's not working, be more specific as to what's happening.

I was wondering if someone could help me. What is the easiest way to copy files or even the entire hard drive that has Win 98 to a harddrive that has Win XP? I am not sure what what type of files need to be copied. Can you set up one as a master and one as a slave and copy the files, or should I just copy the files to a floppy disk?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you very much,
Kelly Whitehead

It will take you forever doing it by floppy if it is 20MB or more. I suggest you set up a USB connection between each computer, then copy the files across

Is it posible to add more mp3 files to a cd-r disk that already has 1 mp3 file burned to it.

The file that is burned to it is only about 4 mb and the disk is a 700 mb cd-r......so there is plenty of space, but when I try to burn more mp3 it says "this medium is not writable".

So can anyone give me some advice please?

A:copying mp3 files

When you burn onto a CD, in the software there should be an option to leave the CD open (I think that's what it's called) so you can start burning file onto it and then come back and put more on later, but I don't think you can listen to the CD until it's been closed. If you do a normal burn it closes the CD so you can listen to it but you then can't add anything to it. So I don't think you can add any files to it. At least this is what I've learned from friends and my own use, and I could be wrong.

April seems to be my month for problems. I'm trying to copy a group of files onto my cd located in my E:\ drive, when I select the files to be copied a window opens up telling me to put a disk in drive E:\, which I do, the problem is that the window has but one button on it and its says cancel. There is no button that says ok. So I can't copy my files and have to close the window.

What am I doing wrong? I would appreciate any advice concerning this.

Hi there all.
Is there a way to collectively copy and paste files from one to another directory, but fianally copy only those which do not already exist in the destination directory? For instance, I want to copy a large number of files from a hdd directory to a flash memory card. The destination directory already exists with a number of files from the source directory. Obviously I cannot sort out which files exist and which don't. Therefore I copy all source files and try to paste then in the flash card, but there is not enought room. If I could give a command to copy only the new files there surely be no problem of space, since the space of the flash card is larger than the space required for all the copy files. Otherwise I have to erase the files in the flash card and copy all the files anew.
Anticipated thanks.

A friend of mine deleted photos but they copied themselves 100s of times. She was able to delete the duplicates by putting the copies into new folders. She also got a message someone else was in the same file. I don't have access to her computer. She has Windows XP. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Files copying Themselves

I have a feeling I know what's happening. Happened to me alot until I caught on. I was making copies, then when trying to delete THOSE ones, I was making even MORE copies.

When your friend is highlighting several photos, she's probably clicking on them too quickly. For some reason unknown to me, that creates copies. Tell her to pause a little longer in between clicks.

Not sure if you know this, but you can also click and drag a box around a group of several items, and that will highlight them. Then they can be deleted. Tell your friend to try that.

I'm trying to copy my hard drive over my WiFi network from my current computer running XP to my new Windows 8, however certain files, especially my Sony Vegas project files refuse to go over.
"You Need Permission to Perform this Action"
EDIT: I access another computer on my network that's running Windows 7 and was able to copy a Sony Vegas Project file fine. So it seems to be an issue with XP

A:Copying files from XP to 8

You should be able to copy any folders over on your Network apart from Windows and Program Files I can if you set access to that folder in its properties and add a Guest user that can Read and Write.
