Solved: Old Linksys WRT54GS firmware CAUSING SLOW Download with Vista!!!!

Q: Solved: Old Linksys WRT54GS firmware CAUSING SLOW Download with Vista!!!!

Well..... I was just about ready to throw my new laptop out of my window today after trying EVERYTHING I found on-line about the slow download speeds with Vista. My XP works fine but put my Vista next to it and watch the grass grow for accessing sites or downloading.... I also have VoiP and when I was on the support line with HP today, I noticed that my Vista worked lightning fast when I was on the phone... After the tech checked my system and could find no issues and we ended the call, S L O W speed again... I made another phone call and WOW.. FAST speed while conencted on the phone. After checking with my VoiP provider they suggested I contact Linksys to inquire about a possible router problem. When I went on-line to Linksys, I found a firmware update for my 2-3 year old router... I decided to download the firmware and IT FIXED THE PROBLEM... YEAH!!!! I know this is a very popular wireless router and imagine many who purchased this while using XP and now upgraded to Vista....... I can get some sleep tonight!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Ok, I am an advanced user that is boggled. I have several applications forwarded on my computer and the associated ports. Usually it works fine, but today it's been acting up. Using uTorrent's built-in port checker, while the application is open, the site, and similar port checkers, report that traffic is open, but when it's closed, it's shows that it times out. This is also true for another one of my applications. While it's open, the associated port for it is open, if it's forwarded on my router, and when the program isn't running, it doesn't allow traffic through. I have tried shutting off Windows Firewall entirely, and the result of that is that it refuses the connections instead of timing them out. I do not know whether or not it's Vista or my router, I don't think a tracert would work too well, but I may be wrong. I'm trying to play Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday Armageddon, which has a staggering port range, 2800-2900 and 28000-29999 TCP.

Can anyone help me, this is really irking me.

Maybe someone can give me advice on how to set my router so my gf will always get enough speed to surf the net - she is always so very mad at me when I download whatever and she can not use normaly net with her laptop. Sometimes she can not use it although I limit bitlord on 150 kilobyte ps. My cable internet has maximum 192 kilo byte ps download and 32 kilo byte ps upload (1,5Mb/256 kbps cable). I was thinking that 20 kilo byte ps download would be more than enough for her, but I can not see no such setting? There is an option for transmision rate - but it is not good when I chose auto or 1 or 54 MB..
Today I upgraded firmware of router to the latest. Maybe this will help a little.
Is there any setting that would force router to give always the laptop enough speed no matter what I am doing on my stationary pc?

thank you for your help

My Linksys WRT54GS has been running happily for years, nothing has changed but recently my wireless connections has been week or dropped completely.

I'm on the latest firmware release v1.50.9.

I'm at a complete loss as to explain what's going on here. Perhaps the router is starting to expire?

Anyone got any ideas?

I recently (July 07) purchased a wireless Linksys router wrt54gs, with speed boost.
I have used Linksys in the past; but only wired routers, i.e. befsr81, befsr41, etc.
and never had this problem.

After installation of the wireless, I chose to get into the router control and setup port forwarding (applications & gaming section). When i got to the Basic setup screen, I saw a screen with missing text, links, and tabs, i.e. Administration, Applications, Setup, etc.
None of the controls or description text is displayed on my desktop.
I began to wonder if the firmware upgrade was required, so I called their tech support.
The short story is they were of No help whatsoever. They tried to tell me to upgrade the firmware; but I couldn't do that if the tab links to that page were not visible or available to me. Anyway, I was able to figure out what page the Upgrade was on by looking at the HTML code source from the front page of the router sw. (There was a link to the port forwarding section.. all it was, was an '&' that was displayed on the screen.
I had to guess what the names of the fields were, to forward the ports when I got to that page.)

I upgraded and it made no difference. Still couldn't see the tabs or any links on the screen.
I even looked through all the .js files and html files associated with the router pages.
Nothing that could tell me about the display requirements or anything.

Hey there folks...
I have a wireless home network with a Netgear WPN824 v2. I also have an old extra Linksys WRT54GS laying around. I want to connect my Linksys router to my Netgear router and use it as a repeater to increase the signal strength in the rooms near the other end of my house. I need it to be seamless so I disabled DHCP and changed the SSID to the exact same name. I tried connecting and found ONE network with my chosen name. I connected to it however it only resulted in "Limited Access" and no internet access.

Can someone help me figure out how I can make this work please?

My system:
Windows 7
Atheros AR5B93 Wireless Network Adapter
Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller

Thank in advance...

Everything's been fine since August of 2009, but now suddenly none of my wireless computers can connect to my router. They generally see the network, but they are unable to connect. the repair function does not fix the problem.

Router is Linksys WRT54GS
Computers that can't connect to network wirelessly are running current version of XP

The router is out of Warranty. On the phone, Linksys tech support mainly just tries to hard-sell me a Wireless N-draft. If the problem is with the router, I'll replace it with a true Wireless-N of some kind.

But can I first get some help in diagnosing my problem? I feel VERY STUPID when it comes to this networking stuff. Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED.

I checked router settings using the Linksys software:

Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Router Name AL-ROUTER1
MTU: Auto
Size: 1500
Local IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
DHCP Server: Enable
Starting IP Address:

Channel: 11
Wireless SSID Broadcast: Enable

WPA Personal
WPA Algorithms: TKIP
WPA Shared Key: a 10-digit number I know well
Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds

I have a lan with a DHCP Server and Firewall etc (Basically all the goodies) but the CEO wanted to setup a wireless access for his office. So they have purchased this router and they can surf the internet and the security works just fine but when they go to browse the local workgroup, they can only see the computers connected to the wireless router.

Is there a way to allow them to see the rest of the LAN? If not, we can scrap it and just purchase a WAP.

Any thoughts on this. I would really like to make this current router work but so far it's been an exercise in futility. Linksys tech support is absolutely no help!

Using firmware version 1.50.9
Router usually works fine, but very occasionally (once ever month or two, longer sometime) loses the ISPs IP address.
I suspect there may be a glitch with the ISP, maybe the internet dropping our.
To remedy the situation, I have to log in to the router and DHCP Release then DHCP Renew to get the address.
Maybe I could set up the router to expire and renew the link say every hour?
Any suggestions?

This is a long multistep message. Sorry, but I don't know any other way to get all pertinent information to you.

I'm trying to help my sister out in getting her second computer to connect to the Internet. It used to be connected wirelessly and worked fine with a Wireless - G USB Adapter. Her router is a Linksys WRT54GS.

She moved the second computer (Compaq Presario SR5113WM) and her 1st computer (Gateway GT4022) into the same room. She now has the second computer connected with an Ethernet wire to her router, but we can't connect to the Internet.

I tried to go into her router settings (through the Gateway) to see if something there was blocking the connection of the Compaq computer. I wasn't able to get into the settings because it wouldn't accept the user name and password we had set up. I'm sure we are using the correct information because we created a file with this information and are using copy paste to enter the name and password. When I couldn't get in, I tried doing what I think is called a hard reset. I followed the steps in the Linksys support area, but still can't get into her settings. I have tried re-installing the Linksys software, but keep getting the following message:

I got a Linksys WRT54GS v.6 router in October. In the beginning, it would occasionally (every couple of days) lose its wireless connection, and for a while DHCP did not work with my iBook. Then I upgraded last month to firmware version 1.52.0, which solved the DHCP problem, but did terrible things to the connectivity.

Soon thereafter the connection, both wired and wireless, started dropping every 5 minutes, and could be recovered only by power-cycling the router (the wired computer is a PC running XP, and the wireless is, as stated above, an iBook G4 with OS 10.4.8). I should note that I tried the DSL connection directly through the modem with the wired computer and it stayed up for the entire time I used it, which was close to an hour. I spent many, many hours on the phone with tech support and changed wireless channels, MTU sizes, fragmentation and RTS thresholds, and beacon intervals, along with several hard resets of the router, but continued to have the same problem, so they deemed the hardware defective and sent me a replacement.

When I got the replacement, I went about installing it and immediately upgraded again to version 1.52.0, and everything worked great for about a week, when I started having exactly the same problem with the connection dropping every 5 minutes like clockwork. Again, I called technical support and suggested it was a software issue, but they insisted it was hardware and are sending me a new router again.

Is it just the wireless connection or also the wired connection?

maybe its DNS, i have hard coded my DNS servers into my D-Link router as it keep dropping, after that its been fine.

not sure of the commands on a MAC - but I'll gice you the windows version perhaps you can convert to MAC

try all the following information and post results for when its working and then when it drops out, see if you connect to the router gateway IP, see if you can ping a name, see if you can ping an IP address - you may want to try putting an IP address into a webbrowser and see f it works OK wth the IP - this would indicate a DNS issue

windows version
ipconfig /all

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.
NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

try ping the name and then the IP see below

A:Setting up Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Router

Yes. You may also want to connect the WAN port to your (cable/dsl) modem at the same time.

You need this wired connection to configure the router and enable the wireless features and such. Many routers do not allow configuration over the wireless connection.... So your neighbors can't reconfig your router.

I live in a two story, 2300 sq. ft condo and my two upstairs computers do not get good wireless up there. I have also noticed falloff at the back of the house. Router is currently placed on top of my computer system at the front of the house.

My problem is: what is the best wireless extender solution so I can extend my signal throughout the unit?

Reviews I am reading do not rate Linksys extenders too highly, so it's hard to know what to use.

I want to use the lowest cost solution that I can and would rather not have to replace omnidirectional with directional antennas, which is one solution I have read.

I have tried digging through web sites for information, but I read conflicting reviews. Also do not know whether this extender needs to be hooked up through a computer or it can be plugged in and connected like any trusted endpoint.

Please note that I would rather work with existing infrastructure and add to that instead of replacing my router with a newer one. Configuring end points for our work computers can be a real hassle, even though it should be dead simple.

Any help is appreciated.

I just moved to Verizon FIOS area and the guy installed Actiontec MI424WR wireless broadband router/modem. Upgraded with firmware Anyway I'm subscribed to Residential plan 5/2mbps.

In my previous apartment I was using Linksys WRT54GS with firmware DD-WRT v23 SP2 with no additional modem since it's a university housing, I love the features of DD-WRT firmware and all my servers, port forwarding etc are set quite easily IMO.

After a few weeks tweaking the Actiontec, I can't figure out how to make http port 80 to work, so I thought I better switch to WRT54GS and stop wasting my time. Btw, port 80 is opened but only accessible via LAN, not internet. Called FIOS tech support and they said since I'm using residential plan, my IP is dynamic and it's a no-no. Well, my internet IP hasn't change since day 1. I also read some posts that port 80 is blocked but the tech guy said otherwise. hmm... Btw, opening other ports are fine.

Anyway, is the MI424WR a better wireless router compared to WRT54GS/DD-WRT? Should I try harder tweaking the MI424WR or try to bridge both? I prefer using the linksys since all settings (wireless wep, client mac list, port forwarding etc) are still there.

I had a Linksys WRT54G that worked flawlessly in our home with 3 laptops until the power supply quit and I replaced it with a WRT54GS.

It works flawlessly until my wife logs on with her Sony Viao. Most of the time her logging on disconnects me and my Dell ends up going into search mode and reconnects after 10 seconds or so. Some of the time when she logs on, she knocks my connection out and shuts down the wireless from broadcasting to the point I have to reboot it by unplugging it and plugging it back in. When it stops broadcasting, all the lights on the front panel look normal, but the broadcast power bar chart in my tray is pure blue meaning it is dead.

It also affects our wireless printer connection as well. I was printing a long report and it caused the print job to fail and start over from the beginning. The print server runs through the 54GS.

I've loaded down their latest firmware update, but it still does the above every time she fires up her laptop. Our son's HP can come on line with no ill affect to me or her. Only her Sony seems to knock out the router.

Lastly, I'd like to mention I initially replaced the dead 54G with a new one and it did the same thing I mentioned above that the 54GS is now doing. I thought it was bad out of the box and exchanged it for this 54GS I am now using.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, you have two routers, and if you're connecting the Linksys to the 1800HW, you don't configure a secondary router to PPPoE. You might want to try this configuration.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

I am interested in changing from my wired Linksys Cable/DSL router to the new Linksys WRT54GS with speedbooster technology router. I have two PC's that I would connect to the router via cat5 cable and two via wireless cards.

Has anyone purchased/installed this new router yet?/ How about online review of this router??

Thanks in advance

The title pretty much sums my problems to the best of my ability, but here's the basic setup:

-I'm typing this on my wireless Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with Windows Vista
-I receive wireless internet access through my Linksys WRT54GS Router which in turn...
-Gets DSL internet from AT&T through my Speedstream 5360 modem
-The only thing connected by wire to my Router is an Xbox 360

Simply put, my internet connection across all platforms is far from stable, and it's extremely frustrating. The speed itself isn't the problem, or at least it doesn't seem to be, it's the stability of the connection itself. I get disconnected frequently when playing online games over Xbox Live, and my laptop is no stranger to this problem either.

Noticeable signs that I've been disconnected outside of the obvious:

-All Router lights are green and are rapidly flashing (including the ones not in use)
-The DSL light on my Modem is blinking when it should be solid
-Sometimes there's no sign at all, I simply can't connect to the internet or Xbox Live

The disconnections are most obvious when playing over Xbox Live, but they do happen on occasion when my laptop is the only thing connected (wirelessly of course). I just need to know if it's possible to keep my connection from failing, and possibly optimize it for Xbox Live performance, as that's when it's most unstable.

I'm hoping the answer is as simple as changing some things around... Read more

A:Speedstream 5360 Modem and Linksys WRT54GS Router issues

Actually, this screams out ISP issues to me. The possibilities are in order of probability.

ISP line quality issues.
Interior wiring and filter installation issues.
Modem failure.

Connect your machine directly to the router with a wired connection and run the following test a couple of times, post the results links here.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

I recently set up a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and it's been working perfectly up until this morning when my brother accidentally opened the Linksys EasyLink Advisor from the system tray and immediately exited. After that, the WLAN light went out on the router and there's no active internet connection detected coming from the router (currently plugged straight into the modem). (to access the router settings) no longer loads as well.

To note, I'm running Vista on the laptop that's now connected to the internet (not sure if that will make a difference in troubleshooting the problem though).

A:WLAN light and internet connection lost on Linksys WRT54GS

Turn off the modem and the router.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady data light.
Turn on the router, wait two minutes.
Reboot the connected computer.
After the computer boots, please post the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I currently have a Linksys WRT54GL router version 1.1 with Tomato-mlppp_v125-mp3alpha6, but I would like to reflash it to a more updated Tomato firmware.

I see that there are Tomato several mods by Shibby and polarcloud. Can someone recommend a good Tomato firmware for my router?

Please note that I think this model has (16MB RAM, 4MB flash), so the firmware must be able to fit in 4mb of flash.

I just don't know which of Shibby's builds that will work properly without bricking my router as there seems to be an issue getting the correct firmware that will fit in the small 4MB flash of the WRT54GL router ver 1.1

I found Shibby's firmware version tomato-ND-1.28.5x-117-VPN.trx and I reflashed my router with this. The flash stated it was successful, so I'm going to give this a try and see what happens.

I have just gone through a major network insanity which began with me trying to flash firmware to my Linksys WRT54G router. Now, even with it hooked up to my main router, I cannot access What I was attempting to install was DD-WRT through the web admin. Outside, it appears to be functioning like normal, no signs of any bricks. I can even access it through wireless, but haven't tried out internet connectivity.

linksys wusb11 v.2.8 is causing continuous spontaneous rebooting

I had this adapter working fine on my dell p3 machine with xp sp1 newly installed from scratch ( from previous 98 ME).

Windows Automatic Updates brought the machine up to SP2.
Now the machine is spontaneously rebooting unless I remove the WUSB11 adapter. I sometimes make it through booting and get a few seconds on the net where a windows error report said I needed an update which so far I cannot find. If i reboot the machine without the adapter all is well (except no internet of course..which makes it hard to download any fixes (sic) ).
Thanks for any advise..I have access to a functioning laptop for downloading an transferring any updates available.

I checked linksys for any updates on drivers and they have only the ones that came originally with the adapter..no updates there. It seems to be a win sp2 problem so far.
